The saga of Macey Gardella continues in the second volume of award-winning, New York Times bestselling author Colleen Gleason’s Roaring Trilogy...
In the dark underworld of Jazz Age speakeasies and gangsters, Macey Gardella finds herself caught up in a dangerous alliance with Al Capone. The murderous crime boss squires her about Chicago, showing her off as his moll while she struggles to fulfill her duty hunting the undead on the midnight streets.
She’s learned the brutal lesson of loss and betrayal that comes to those who live out the legacy of the Venators, walking away from her friends, co-workers, and even Grady—the intrepid newshawk who seems to dog her every movement.
But when the worst comes to pass, and the powerful Venator alliance of Sebastian Vioget, Chas Woodmore, and Macey herself stumble in the face of the insidious evil of Nicholas Iscariot, even Macey has cause to question her motives and decisions.
And when the ultimate sacrifice must be paid, who will remain to wield the stake—and who will walk away?

I liked this book quite a bit! I didn’t like it quite as much as I liked the first book that featured Macey but it was still an excellent read. This is the third book in the Macey Gardella & Max Denton series which is a spin-off of The Gardella Vampire Hunters Series. I would recommend reading at least the first book featuring Macey, Roaring Midnight, before diving into this one since this story picks up shortly after the events of that book.
Macey is working for Al Capone rather unwillingly. Spending time with him has proven to be worse than imagined but she needs to keep those she cares about safe. I must say that the parts of the book that involved Al Capone were my least favorite of the book. Macey does get back in touch with the other venators, or vampire hunters, which is where the story shined for me.
I would not hesitate to recommend this series to others. I found this installment exciting with enough action to keep things very interesting. There were a few surprises that kept me glued to the pages. I cannot wait to see what will happen next in the series!
I recieved a free advanced copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Roaring Shadows was an engrossing page-turner that I couldn't put down! As Macey has come more fully into her role as a venator she faces a number of difficult decisions. Much like her ancestor Victoria before her, Macey struggles with balancing her duty and the obligations of her personal life --made even more complicated by events revealed in the first book. She also spends much of the book questioning what it means to be a venator and what it could hold for her future. The weight of responsibility is heavier on her. This doesn't slow the pacing, but it focuses the plot in an unexpected direction.
As introspective as the book can be at times, it is well-balanced with plenty of twists, turns and action. I enjoyed the depth of detail in the story and how easy it was for me to slip into the rich, glittering atmosphere of nineteen-twenties Chicago. The characters were just as intriguing as the first book, but since Roaring Shadows focuses on Macey being more independent, we don't see as much of them. While I would've liked to see more of certain characters this decision makes sense given the direction of the plot. Also, through multiple points of view and conversation, many of the questions raised in the previous book were subsequently answered in this one.
A few of Macey's decisions shocked me. Regardless of how I feel about them, you definitely get a sense of her as a character and it distinguished her from Victoria, which I appreciated. (If you haven't read The Gardella Vampire Hunters series yet, you should consider it.) The ending is full of shocks and revelations, making this another can't miss read!
The second part of the story of Macey Gardella-Denton will leave you in suspense from beginning to end, and at the end, you’ll have no more tears to cry and it’ll make you hair stand on your head, the more you're fond of the world Gardella, the more it’ll freak you out. The various relationships and situations evolve often in unexpected directions, always in an absolutely astonishing way. Macey proves the perfect offspring of Victoria and Max Pesaro, revealing part of the character of both sides and also a personality completely autonomous and distinctive. Many of the questions left unanswered in the first book are answered, and believe me, it is not what you think. And for every answer, other questions arise. It will be hard to stop thinking about every detail, and what’s to come. But it will be hard also not to be moved, angry, happy and sad at the same time for all that happens in this book. We can only hope that the third book comes soon ... because we will remain in suspense until then.
This series is just awesome, awesome, awesome, I am loving every single book in it. I think I have two more books..... I don't want it to end. All you vampire lovers this is a must series.
. Maljka - per RFS
Back into the vivid and beautifully created world of vampires and gangsters with Macey Gardella in the Roaring 20s! This book continues to build upon the alternate history and romance the author has created in her Gardella Vampire Hunters books. This one will bring out a full range of emotions. There were moments in this story I was grinning like a fool, and there were times I felt that I'd just been punched in the gut. That's the mark of a great book, in my opinion, one that will make me swell with such varying emotions.
Macey continues to evolve and come into her own while battling her demons. She is fiercely independent, even to a fault. This book shows a bit of a hardened and darker Macey. It's hard to review without giving away spoilers--just know that many questions are answered and there are many new surprises ahead. Grady, Chas, and Sebastian are back, much is learned in this edition about their pasts and their fates.
To really get the full experience of this world, you should definitely check out the earlier Gardella Vampire Hunter books (the Victoria years).
These books aren't just simply read, they are are devoured! These characters leap off the page and become your friends and and your enemies. But really, no character in the Gardella world is quite what they seem, the world is not black and white. I love that this series keeps me guessing and that the author is never afraid to take her characters to dark places.
Loved this second installment of the Macey Denton series. So glad the Gardella series is continuing and there are so many tie ins to other books of Ms. Gleason. So if you haven't read them (I have) they will make you want to read the others. This is a fast paced, roaring 20's with speakeasies, illegal whiskey, Al Capone and a few "gunfights". Loved every minute of it...the ending of this was not what I expected, but I was hoping for the epilogue events. So glad to have gotten the opportunity to read this as an ARC.
WHAT WAS EVEN THE POINT OF HAVING SEBASTIAN IN THESE BOOKS? What was the long promise that was fulfilled??? Basically nothing happened. He didn't make some huge sacrifice. And then the best character in the series just vanishes after having a very minor role in the events of the series. For that reason, and the large Al Capone part of the novel, I did not overly like this book. That being said, it was still entertaining and I will read the final book but the use of Sebastian in these books was such a waste.
At first I was like "this took awhile to write and publish... not sure if worth the wait."
But then I read it and was all like "fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck i want to quit my job to read the Gardella series full-time for the rest of my life because this is yet another kickass installment to the series and I just want to read them from start to finish, AGAIN, and The Vampire Narcise too while I'm at it because fuck yeah why not!"
Seriously, Colleen Gleason can do no wrong in my eyes. It's just not possible. This series, this family, these women - I love it so much I joined a fucking fan club closed group on Facebook. Under my REAL NAME. So you know shit is serious.
I'm not saying it's logical. I'm just saying it IS.
Roaring Midnight was the first installment in Macy's series and I loved it because I love this series, but I didn't love it because Macy was amazing. She had a lot of growing up to do in the first book, and she completed that journey here in Roaring Shadows.
I can't really review this without going spoiler-crazy, because I have no self control to speak of, but if you're into this series, you cannot miss this book.
Okay one little spoiler - hell yes to Macy sleeping with whoever she wants, whenever she wants, because she can. She's a grown ass woman. Go Macy!
Roaring Shadows is an action-packed and emotion-filled continuation of Macey Gardella Denton's part of the Gardella Vampire Hunters saga. Macey has to learn to balance her personal life with that of a vampire hunter in 1920s Chicago ruled by two titans of the underworld--the gangster Al Capone and the leader of the undead Nicholas Iscariot. Suddenly, everyone is coming after Macey for their own nefarious purposes. It doesn't help that she thinks she has to push away everyone who cares about her in order to protect them. As Chas is fond of saying, "The life of a Venator is a lonely one."
Macey's dilemma churns up a lot of emotion, and some parts are so tense, it was gut-wrenching. While I'm not really a fan of the bloody aspects of vampire stories, they do serve to get across the importance of Macey living up to her legacy and continuing to fight evil. The ending of this book was very satisfying, and I'm looking forward to the next installment!
I received an ARC of this book from the author in return for an honest review.
Not much vampire hunting going on in the first two thirds of the story. Macy only kills 2 vampires and gets attacked by the big one. The story, while interesting is more of a 1920’s mobster action story with robberies, illegal booze, counterfeiting and other stuff associated with mobsters. It’s mostly just talk about dealing with vampires. As if Ms. Gleason just took a regular story and threw some vampires in to be able to put in in the genre.
It wasn't until the last third that things got really exciting. hostages are threatened, promises are kept, secrets reveled, dangers are done away with, relationships are changed and Macy’s story takes a new turn.
Don’t get me wrong I enjoyed it, but was expecting something with more vampire action and less Al Capone.
Fave Scenes: Grady’s escape from the warehouse, mark of the silver cross, Mr. Badgley an Wayren’s offer.
A cosa ci aggrappiamo? . Siate coraggiose. Siate Macey Gardella.
Continues to be my favorite paranormal vampire series. This trilogy+ so far has been a quick read. Gleason writes great vampire action scenes and her characters are all both angsty and cool without being completely closed off. A touching finale for a favorite character in this one. I so wish that Gleason would do another series about another Venator in the Gardella line someday.
Macy Denton is struggling to escape the control of Al Capone in prohibition Chicago. She is also afraid that Nicolas Iscariot will target Grady so she is afraid pursue a relationship with him.
Five months later, now under Al Capone's employment, Macey is supposed to be his bodyguard against Iscariot. He has enough leverage to keep her there because of the multiple threats made to harm her loved ones.
But Macey has other things in mind. She needs to keep Grady away from her forever. Even if involves making him hate her in the process. When Macey refuses to hunt with Chas one night, many people pay for it. That's when she figures out that she more control over Big Al then he ever did over her and she quits.
When she encounters Iscariot again, she finds out that her father has been alive all these years. But what Iscariot really wants from Macey is to get the 5 rings of Jubaii from Sebastian then have him feed on her to lose his soul. But she has no plans on doing that.
When Sebastian sees Macey's special rosary he runs to the church she received it from and sees his beloved Guilia waiting for him 105 years later. He saved her soul on that very day a century ago when he became immortal, now she stakes him, saving his soul and they disappear together finally able to rest in peace.
But now Chas, Temple, Macey, and Wayren are left with the task of hiding the rings to protect the world.
When Grady begs to be by her side fighting because he loves her, Macey can't take the same chance her father did with her mother. So she has Wayren do the unthinkable to make him forget about her forever.
I was lucky enough to receive and ARC of in exchange for an honest review.
Writing this review is one of the trickiest ones I have had to do lately as there is so much I want to say but it would have SO many spoilers and I would hate to do that to anyone .... especially with THIS story. These words need to be read with no preconceived ideas in my opinion and thus this review will reflect that.
The wait for book 2 in this series has been unbearable with so many questions unanswered from book 1 but it was worth it.
I laughed, I cried, I held my breath, and I loved it! Colleen does an excellent job of combining providing you with some of the answer wanted from book 1 but at the same time creating new questions that now demand answers.
Theories I am sure will be flying as people get through this one and I am excited to see the fans reactions. I can guarantee some will be rather extreme.
Another wonderful installment in this fantastic legacy. Bring on book 3!
Here we are back with Macey in 1920's Chicago and she's Al Capone's bodyguard now and stuck in this position or else he will hurt her friends - including Grady, the brash Irish reporter that was trained by Houdini to get out of fixes (this comes in handy later on). I was hot and cold over this installment, for I wasn't crazy that Macey jumped into bed with Chas, after sleeping with Grady in the last book. It just seemed kind of "bleh" to me (sorry, but I am a bit of a snob when it comes to heroine's sleeping around). It's obvious she's still in love with Grady, but has to keep him arms length for fear Iscariot will kill him. I understand that and I hope Grady doesn't go the same route as Philip in the first of the Gardella books, for he doesn't seem to have any intention of letting her out of his life. We'll see what happens...
3.5/5

Macey Gardella sinks her stake into you, and twists you through a whirlwind of the Roaring Twenties! Colleen has done herself over and beyond yet again, pulling Macey through the fight of her life. If you want action, adventure, and passion this is the book for you! Macey is the perfect culmination of her predecessors Victoria Gardella, and Max Pesaro, and the perfect rival to Nicholas Iscariot. Macey has to balance her legacy as a Gardella with her yearning to try to stay somewhat normal, in the Roaring Twenties era. She also has the fear that she will turn into other Vampire Hunters before her: cold, hard, and alone, dealing the with the fate they have: that everyone they love will be destroyed. I enjoyed the book immensely, and couldn’t put it down. You won’t regret pulling this book from the shelf
I am so emotionally drained after reading this book. I have been a fan of Colleen's ever since "The Rest Falls Away" was first released, so I have been engrossed in this world for 9 years. Macey continues to grow on me as she accepts her calling and she certainly didn't disappoint in this installment. So many events happened in this book that were adrenaline inducing and gut-wrenching. Max Denton is alive and well and my beloved, tortured Sebastian is finally at rest (which is so depressing). Chas is coming into his own and will soon be fulfilling his destiny, however dark and depressing it may be. I cannot wait for the conclusion of this trilogy and can only hope all of my beloved Gardellas will come out on top and will continue to fill the literary world with their adventures for many years to come!!!

This second book in the story of Macey Gardella does not disappoint. This part of the story line will take you on an emotional voyage through rough seas. I smiled, laughed, felt my heart swell with joy, cried, became angry, and even found afraid at times. Gleason does such an amazing job with character development that I truly feel as if I know them personally, and as if I am going through these trials alongside them. I don't want to go into details and spoil any of it for people who haven't read this yet, but I give you my word that this is definitely worth reading. I can't wait for book 3 now!
Page 200: I've encountered WAY too many occasions where "for" is used to join two independent clauses. OMG. Enough already! It's literally distracting me from the excellent story at this point.
Finished!
I would give this book a solid four stars if it weren't for all the editing errors. Geez. I wish I could've proofread this before it came out. I even spotted Chas's name as "Chase" at one point.
However, the characters were interesting and the story was wonderful. I can't wait for the next book, editor issues or not. ;D
Another GREAT story by Colleen Gleason for the Gardella series. I love this Macey series with the 1920's, Al Capone, Chicago, Prohabition, and much more. Now that Macey knows she is a Venator and its her job to protect humans and kill vampires, things become very real. Nicolas Ischarot is after her. She has personal life highs and lows - some of which are heartbreaking. They did say being a Venator was a lonely life.
Chas and Sebastain make appearances as well...and more of their stories are revealed.
