Jhaverchand Meghani (Gujarati: ઝવેરચંદ મેઘાણી; August 28, 1896 – March 9, 1947) was a noted poet, litterateur, social reformer and freedom fighter from Gujarat. He is a well known name in the field of Gujarati literature. He was born in Chotila. Mahatma Gandhi spontaneously gave him the title of Raashtreeya Shaayar (National Poet).[1] Besides this he received many awards like Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak and Mahida Paaritoshik in literature. He authored more than 100 books. His first book was a translation work of Rabindranath Tagore's ballad Kathaa-u-Kaahinee titled Kurbani Ni Katha (Stories of martyrdom) which was first published in 1922. He contributed widely to Gujarati folk literature. He went from village to village in search of folk-lores and published them in various volumes of Saurashtra Ni Rasdhar.[2] He was also the Editor of Phoolchhab Newspaper of Janmabhoomi group (which is being published till date from Rajkot). A sample of his collection of folk tales from Saurashtra has recently been published in an English, with the translation done by his son Vinod Meghani. The three volumes published so far are titled A Noble Heritage, A Shade Crimson and The Ruby Shattered.[3]
એક સમયે બહારવટિયાઓ ને ચોર અને લૂંટારા સાથે જ સરખાવવામાં આવતા. પરંતુ રાષ્ટ્રીય શાયર મેઘાણીએ આ પુસ્તક થકી ઘણાં એવા બહારવટિયાઓની હકીકતો સામે લાવી જેના વિશે જગત કદાચિત અજાણ જ હતું. જોગીદાસ ખુમાણ , બાવાવાળો, ચાંપરાજ વાળા એવા અડાભીડ પાત્રો અને તેમની ખુમારી આ પુસ્તક થકી જગત સામે રખાઈ. ગામના પાદરે ખાંભી થઈને ખોડાઈ ગયેલા... સોડ તાણીને સૂઈ ગયેલા કેટલાંય બહારવટિયાઓને મેઘાણીએ આ પુસ્તક થકી જગત સામે ફરી જીવતા કર્યા છે.
A book tells the stories of pure courage, tremendous sacrifice, and high degree of discipline. Author has delicately put forth his thoughts and excruciating gathered information about the characters, which makes them must to explore. A deep insight of a culture prevalent in Saurashtra region of Gujarat state is intriguing to every reader.
Some of the incidents mentioned in the books are hard to believe, yet we can hear about it in the same region of Kathiyawad. Even in today's date people cant get over to these characters mentioned in the book.
For every story lover and seeking motivation through their own homeland, should try reading this book. Additionally, other work from Zaverchand Meghani is equally admired by many.

Every gujarati should read this. It took a while to adopt to the writing style, but reading it twice made me understand the masterful depiction of old traditional culture of gujarat that is now almost lost. Amazing work.
