I will probably write more in review of this book that the ones I have loved. I see now this author has actually written several other books. I was surprised because I honestly felt like I was reading a first work from a somewhat promising teenager in Only Dust. While the characters did have some memorable qualities... Shiki anyway... the narrator seemed very immature and all the characters written all wrong for their ages, i.e. they were much too young to be the people they were written to be. There was a lot of missed potential in this book. The "organization" all the characters worked for that had so shaped all of their lives was never expanded on at all; likewise, neither the villains were fleshed out nor their dastardly deeds ever really described so that the reader could feel the terror of the characters or emphathize with their pain or fear. Virtually everything in this book in merely a backdrop for the love story. It was sad, really, because a lot could've been done with the premise.
I generally found the book poorly written and although I'm relatively new to Kindle reading, I think this particular edition was especially annoying due to typos, grammatical errors and misused words perhaps mostly editing flaws in an early Kindle edition?
The weird thing is after I finished this book (and I admit I did want to know how it came out), I found myself wishing that I could read it again in a version rewritten in about 10+ years thinking that by then the author might have grown up and actually written the book she intended to write in the first place.
I thought it was a slow read at first, got a little better towards the end. I was not really into it, stopped and read 3 others books while I put this one on hold.
