Sunny Acres Massacre

Rate this book
Things are much worse than they appear when family court forces six-year-old Arrianne Lee-Anne Bailey to spend two weeks at Sunny Acres Mobile Home Park with her drug-addicted mother and violent stepfather.

At first, Sunny Acres seems like your typical trailer hood. But beyond the Camaro graveyard, feral pit bulls, crackhead-engineered trucks, and beer cans littering the ground, children are disappearing.

In a place where nobody snitches, and with Arrianne unable to shake the creepy man who lives in trailer #13, will she be able to save herself before she falls into the hands of a group of elite pedophiles?

Tara Hanson was born and raised deep in the mountains of rural West Virginia, lovingly brought up by her grandparents. A wife and mother, Tara has always found herself drawn to the strange pull of horror—where the eerie, the unspoken, and the downright terrifying can hide in plain sight.

Her love of reading took root during a unplanned vacation at a psych ward, where books offered escape, comfort, and the spark that would one day light her path as a writer. That spark now burns in the pages of her fiction—stories that don’t just seek to scare, but to peel back the skin of human nature and show what festers underneath.

A slice of that americana pie! The one that's been sitting in the sun and drawing in flies!
It's buttery, greasy, melting, a bit bloody and that dollop of brown on top ain't so sweet, nor is it chocolate!
This story throws you straight into the life of our FMC and what it's like to experience life from the eyes of a 6 year old. Having to stay with her loosely titled "mom" for 2 weeks in a mobile home park filled to the brim with questionable characters who live in even more questionable living conditions. It's court ordered, so there's no real choice... or is there? Can she navigate an escape back to the loving arms of her Mee-maw and Pee-paw? Or will the clutches of Sunny Acres never let her go?
I could not put this down till I finished.

Nobody can downplay the excellence in your prose, your verbiage, your storytelling, your ability to understand and embody evil characters down to the most strange and peculiar nuances. The sheer weight of the pain embedded in every word, the kind of understanding that only comes from much more excruciating observations. Not only would I argue you've somehow managed to embody the Splatterpunk genre as a dark beacon of what this genre can look like in the modern day, but you have downright set the bar for absolute perfection within the scene. There is no downplaying what you have accomplished here, regardless of what anyone could say. You're my first and foremost example of what I consider the best in the business. You've crafted something raw, real, visceral, verbose, frankly as an artist, I'm sickened by the thought of this book being skipped by anyone. Brite, Sonnet, White, you are writing on that same level and clearly you will continue to break new bounds for yourself with each new release. This isn't flattery, it's the words of someone floored by one of their peers, not just floored but buried six feet under. Sunny Acres Massacre is a great book, it's a disgusting book, it's a topical book, this is a triumphant victory that deserves the utmost recognition. Bravo? No. Kudos? No. Congratulations? Still not good enough. I'm proud to be writing in the same artistic ecosystem as you, a privilege. Honestly, the best I really can say is wow, I see you Tara Hanson. Never stop because your name will be etched in literary history, in no time. 10/5, no notes.

I received this free from the author for my honest opinion/review.

This short story is gory, very disturbing and honestly awful (in a good way). You are reading it from the 6 year olds Arriannes point and this is only going to be my one negative the things she was saying and her 4 year old sister were saying just doesn't happen it can't happen they are too young. so sometimes it took me away from the story, I know they are/have growing up in a very dark unusual situation so that did help me to carry on. Everything else I very much enjoyed I thought the build up was brilliant and the execution was not disappointing.

Sunny Acres? More like somebody burn this fucking place to the ground.

We took the worst parts of humanity, threw them in a trailer park, and made everything exponentially more disgusting. Tara actually committed to that bit.

This book is nasty. The kind of nasty where you're simultaneously disgusted, horrified, and wondering what the hell is wrong with you for turning the next page. The answer? Nothing. You're more interested in how this shit show ends, in the best way possible though.

But underneath all the filth, depravity, and absolute garbage fire of human behavior is a little girl you can't help but root for. And that's what makes this one hit differently. The horror isn't just about how graphic things get. It's about the cruelty people are capable of, the people who look the other way, and the vulnerable kids caught in the middle of it all.

Sunny Acres is a hard fucking pass as a vacation destination, but a hell of a ride as an extreme horror read.

Would I recommend it to everyone? Absolutely the fuck not. Would I recommend it to my fellow horror degenerates who like their fiction filthy, brutal, and deeply unsettling? You already know.

Read the trigger warnings. Put down your snacks. Maybe reconsider the last part.

The vibes are rancid. The people are worse. Five stars!

I don't even know how to rate this because I don't know what in the ever loving hell I just read. Completely and totally messed up on every level there is. I was horrified and disgusted and horrified some more.

One thing I will say ( and honestly I don't know if this is a compliment or not 🤣) Hanson has a way with words! Like a way of being so descriptive and painting such a disgusting picture! It's really amazing! Like I really am impressed how she can take seemingly normal words and fit them all together in such a vile way! It's such a talent. And probably the reason I read this book after being slightly traumatized by Lovebug! 🤣🤣

So 5 stars and don't judge me, if you see this on my Goodreads, no you don't.

This book is a gut-wrenching story, especially for parents. It’s heartbreaking to learn how the mother came to be the way she is and to see how she now treats her six-year-old. The trailer park where the mother lives leaves much to be desired, adding to the bleak and difficult circumstances of the story. The story contains graphic content, so reading the trigger warnings is essential. This was my first book by Tara Hanson, I read it in a single day because I simply couldn’t put it down!

“Kenzie what took you so long to read this?”

I’M A BUSY MOM OF 3. FUCK OFF ❤️ Life has been SLAMMMMED.

ANYWAY. SUNNY ACRES. WHAT THE FUCK.

This book is fucking VILE. The conditions Claudia and Arrianne were living in??? HEINOUS. I wanted to crawl into the damn book and get those babies OUT.

And the PTA bath/shower descriptions of Crystal’s nasty ass snatch??? FUCKING FOUL. 🤢 I almost threw up in my mouth. WE GET IT. THAT THING IS RANCID. PLEASE GOD STOP DESCRIBING IT.

At first I was sus as FUCK about Eddie 👀 but EDDIE??? MY FUCKING GUY. Minus the drugs, we need more Eddies. I’ll put money on that man’s bail ALL DAY. FREE EDDIE.

Underneath all the depraved nasty shit though, this book sheds light on some VERY real horrors. Child trafficking, drugs, neglect, and kids being failed by the people who should protect them.

We are FUCKED.

Sunny Acres? 0/10 vacation destination.

Extreme horror read? FUCKING RIDE.

Would I recommend it to everyone? Absolutely the fuck not.

My fellow horror degenerates? GET IN LOSER. WE’RE GOING TO SUNNY ACRES.

CHECK YOUR FUCKING TRIGGERS. ❤️

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
WOW!! This is a dark and disturbing horror story!! Sunny Acres is a place that no one should want to live.
This story follows along the life of a 6 year old
and her not so great life. She is forced to stay with her mom in her trailer in Sunny Acres. Her mom is a horrible drug addicted person and provides nothing as a parent.

This story is well written and really tugs at your heart strings. I couldn’t put the book down!! It’s a wild roller coaster of a read that is intense, twisted, and vile.
I was lucky to get an arc of this depraved story!!

**This novella is out now and I highly recommend the read for extreme lovers!**

Review of Advanced Copy received from Author.

This book was intense from the get go. 6 year old Arrianne is court ordered to go and stay with her 'mother' for 2 weeks, in the summer holidays. Said womb donor is a vile narcissistic meth head, who has other ideas!!
Arrianne must navigate this hell if she is to survive.
Yes, this book is gross in it's subject matter, it's also happening right now... in every corner of the world, right under our noses!!
This is my second book by Tara Hanson, this woman tells it straight. As vile, disgusting and despicable as it was, I couldn't look away. There are also moments in this book that I laughed, Tara's humour is spot on!!
Honourable mention goes to Eddie, I loved his character!!
The true hero of this book is Arrianne. A little girl who went through things, no child ever should!!

This was a descriptive, disgusting ride of a read - and i mean that in the best way possible! I felt for Arrianne and her poor story, but fate puts her in the driver’s seat of her 6 year destiny. I laughed, I gagged and I loved this story. I thought the tie in to our world today and how horror ridden it is, was very well played. Well done, Tara! I received a free copy of this book for an honest review.

Did you grow up in a trailer park?
Did you ever feel that pit in your stomach when it was time to go visit your other parent? The one who's house smelled strange and refrigerator contained just a pack of hotdogs and a dream?
Are the words Tina or Crystal more than just names of women to you?
And most importantly, have you or anyone you know ever eaten a Milk Bone dog treat?

If you've answered yes to any of these questions and want to feel that long forgotten creeping, sinking feeling of helplessness from the comfort of your own home and adulthood, read this book.

This book is for the folks who lived with their grandparents, crawled through junk yards, and had unique relationships with adults who had no real business talking to kids your age.

Tara Hanson manages to bring back the most disgusting feelings of nostalgia with this splatterpunk romp through the trailer park. We follow a small child thrust into a horrific world during a court mandated visit with her mother, and that's about all the plot I'm willing to spill. Tara's writing is as sickening and descriptive as ever, you WILL be gagging. You will be cheering, and probably needing to take a shower after you finish.

Do not miss out on this new story from one of splatterpunk's legends in the making, if you can handle every trigger imaginable of course. 🖤

4.5/5 ⭐ | ARC Review

What in the absolute trailer park fever dream did I just read?!

Sunny Acres Massacre by Tara Hanson was disgusting, disturbing, hilarious in the most inappropriate ways, and somehow impossible to put down. I went into this expecting extreme horror, but I was NOT prepared for the bizarre roller coaster this book took me on.

First of all, I don't think I'll ever recover from the nickname "Scratch-and-Sniff." And thanks to one particularly unfortunate description, I may never look at an Arby's Beef 'n Cheddar the same way again. If you know, you know. 😭

The characters are absolutely unhinged, the living conditions made my skin crawl, and there were several moments when I genuinely had to stop reading just to process what I'd witnessed. But underneath all the grotesque imagery and dark humor, there are some genuinely heartbreaking moments. The way Tara balances absurdity with the disturbing realities of neglect and cruelty made certain scenes hit much harder than I expected.

One of my favorite things about this book was how unpredictable it was. I spent a good portion of it completely confused about where the story was going, but I was also fascinated. I needed answers, and the ending was incredibly satisfying.

That said, I did have a few issues. Some of the transitions, particularly early on and in a later chapter, felt abrupt. There were moments when too many things were happening at once, making the narrative feel crowded and difficult to follow. I also wasn't a fan of the repeated use of the literal word "redacted" in place of a character's name. I understand the possible intention, but it interrupted the flow of the story and left me wanting a resolution that never came.

Despite those criticisms, I had a fantastic time reading this. It's bizarre, uncomfortable, surprisingly emotional, and certainly not for the faint of heart.

If you enjoy extreme horror, grotesque imagery, deeply dysfunctional characters, and dark humor that makes you question whether you should be laughing, this one might be for you.

Please check the content warnings before reading. This book deals with extremely disturbing subject matter, particularly involving children.

Thank you to Tara Hanson for providing me with an advance reader copy in exchange for my honest review.

*Review of Advanced Copy Received from Author*

This book was horrifically familiar, tragic, and oddly full of more camp than originally expected. The setting of Sunny Acres is, unfortunately, one that will hit close to home for a lot of folks. While I myself was privileged enough to not grow up with parents who were addicts/abusive, many people in my extended family as well as my community were not so lucky. There are thousands of Sunny Acres across this country, there are thousands of mothers like Crystal, of grandparents like Sheila and Charlie, of little girls caught in the mess of adults who make bad decisions like Arianne.

I think this is where the true horror of this book lies. For all the excessive gore and filth, this is also the reality for too many people. I have watched my grandmother raise so many of my baby cousins because their parents are unfit for childcare, because Dad is in prison and Mom is on drugs. But the system isn't built to protect children let alone help the parents. And so, people like Mike and Brent happen. And it does happen. It may not be Epstein levels of human trafficking in every scenario, but it can be quiet. It can be commonplace. It is still absolutely horrific.

What I loved about this is that there seemed to be two different stories being told. For Arianne, it was nothing short of a horror story. But for Crystal it almost felt like a sitcom. I was less horrified at the excessive gore but rather that there were moments that I laughed! It is truly disarming to be reading about the most despicable humans only for them to do something humorous. Not to mention the pure "Evil Dead" levels of violence that came from the end with Eddie, truly embodying the Camp that can be found in horror.

Hanson managed to create a little glimpse into this world that held so much feeling and emotion. I am really glad I got a chance to read this.

You want an author to read and think to yourself “ what the fuck did j just read” well you found your author! I found Tara on IG and man!!!! I never went back. She is an amazing author with some crazy shit in her head and writes it all down and I am here for it.

This story you have a little girl that wants her mother love so much but just seems like a lost cause at this point but unfortunately the court feels different. I been throw that and I feel sometime the court doesn’t look out for the kids as much as they think they do, if it a bad situation it is just a bad situation! No point ends or butts. But anyways….

Her goes Arrianne Lee-Anne Bailey to spend two weeks at Sunny Acres Mobile Home Park with her drug-addicted mother and violent stepfather. This is going to be fun! This poor little girl goes throw so much it sad at the same time it’s maddening you want to just jump in the book and protect her But with all the craziness she has her eyes on trailer #13. That man is creepy. And he feed her sister dog bones.

I mean I can go on and on and on about this book but if you like this genre you really need to pick it up for yourself, she will make you not eat that snack you want why eating, she will have you rethinking about why you love this stuff so much! And so on . I think this is 1 out of maybe 2 author that can really gross me out with all her details and graphics. But I love it

Did I also mention she has a trivia at the end of the book, Just a cool way to keep people coming back, I have a personal library I only add books I like and she makes the cut forsure.

Just read her!!!!
If I could give more stars I would
6 stars forsure

The story follows 6 year old Arrianne, who lives with her grandparents but is sent to spend two weeks with her mother, Crystal, and Crystal’s boyfriend. Crystal is a drug-addicted, nasty so called mother living in a trailer park surrounded by some seriously disturbing people. Arrianne is neglected, barely fed, and made to feel unwanted by the one person who should be protecting her. The one bright spot during her time there is getting to spend time with her younger sister.

Hanson also goes ALL IN on the gross-out factor. I’m talking graphic descriptions of bodily fluids, bloody discharge, complete lack of hygiene, filthy living conditions, and people who seem to have absolutely no concept of soap and water. The descriptions are so vivid and repulsive that you can practically smell the filth coming off the pages. This isn’t just blood and guts for shock value. Hanson gets down into the nasty, unfiltered details of human depravity, and some of the imagery is downright stomach-churning. I loved it!

Things take a horrifying turn when Crystal and her boyfriend’s intentions toward Arrianne become disgusting. The story ventures into the darkest corners of human depravity, with disturbing implications involving child exploitation and trafficking. I can’t get into details without spoiling anything so I’ll leave it at that.

If you can handle graphic gore, grotesque imagery, and the darkest sides of human depravity, this one will definitely enjoy reading this one.

I received this book as an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review which can be found below.

Well..wow..where do I even start.

Taras writing and wit is exceptional. I love the humour that she weaves through her stories. It was gory, with so much underlying meaning behind each word. The truth in this book is heartbreaking and shocking but unfortunately..it is the truth.

The story did not go down the horrific path I thought it would end up in which I liked, as that subject is a common theme in many splatterpunk books. But the ending was satisfying and dare I say..happy.

Claudia drove me up the wall, I could have skinned Crystal myself, Eddie is an absolute star and I loved the hints of ‘redacted’, ‘McDonalds’ and that least sentence in the epilogue about the ‘politician’. IYKYK.

The only reason I didn’t give it 5 starts was because it took me a minute to get into but one I was in, I WAS IN. I wish some things started happening a little bit earlier in the story. But overall, what a fabulous piece of work! From the story, the message, the trivia, the funny author’s note..exceptional.

What a fucking wild ride this one was. Tara Hanson really knows how to throw readers into a chaotic tale that you just cannot put down. A fantastically disgusting read, that will have you equal parts cackling and repulsed.

Sunny Acres Massacre follows our young protagonist as she quite literally fights for her life visiting her addict mother in a shit show of a trailer park. I laughed, I gagged, I picked my jaw up off the floor, I felt like I was fighting for my own life at times!

What an enjoyable read that had me on the edge of my seat. I'm new to the weird and whacky world of Tara Hanson, but I am obsessed with their work. You will never expect anything, you'll have whiplash from the twists, turns and disgusting moments. I cannot wait to read more!

If you want an extremely enjoyable rollercoaster of a read, which unfortunately pulls from true events, then this one is for you!

Thank you so much to the author for an arc of Sunny Acres Massacre. All opinions and views are mine and have been left voluntarily.

First off thank you so much Tara for trusting and allowing me to Beta read for you.

Seriously, this is great work. This might be my favorite book so far.
It really takes a lot for me feel emotions while reading a book, you hit every one. Not only were you able to make me feel upset, anxious, unwell, queasy and saying WTF about 100x I was able to connect with the characters in this story. It’s very hard to be able to make a reader connect with a child AND the villains, but you did it perfectly.
From the brutal death scenes that had me staring at the wall to the crackhead adventures that had me laughing, there wasn’t one thing I disliked about this book. If I could give you 100 stars I would.
This is what a Splatterpunk book is all about. You really checked all the boxes with this story. I cannot wait to see what else your brain has in store for your future books.

Sunny Acres Massacre by Tara Hanson

This book was one hell of an entertaining read. I finished it in one day because the story flowed so easily, and I wanted to know what would happen next.

The characters are well done and fleshed out, even the ones you absolutely don't want to meet in real life. The story has plenty of gore, gross details, disturbing situations, and some seriously messed-up people. Just the way I like it!

I also loved the use of “Redacted” instead of an actual name. You know exactly who it's supposed to be, and the political connection adds another layer to the madness.

If you like extreme horror with nasty characters, outrageous situations, gore, and a story that keeps moving, give this one a look. I had a great time reading it.

I received an ARC from the author. This is my honest review.

If you want a story which will make you seethe with anger, but absolute comeuppance (for most) at the end, then definitely dive into this nasty lil piece of art!

The story centres on 6 year old Arrianne, who is really not happy about going to her court appointed 2 weeks with her mum (if you can call her that). The absolute dirt and squalor which unfolds made me feel like I needed a shower and just when you think it can’t get any worse, oh it fucking goes there 💀

I love how the book reflects modern day elite cûntş as the nasty pieceş of șhït that they are. The poverty in the book juxtaposed with the elite was so well written!

Just don’t read this if you’re about to eat 😆

Great book. I’m sure someone will absolutely relate to this book due to some childhood trauma. Maybe an outsiders view! But nevertheless a wonderful set of parents have an unruly daughter who takes and takes, lies, over dramatic and is motivated by money. That daughter wants her child back, brings her to the trailer park, and wants to sell her off before she goes back to her parents. It’s a wild ride in that trailer park with its residents, the acceptable behaviors and one way street of favoritism.
My favorite parts in this book is how smart this child is as well as the methods of punishment!!!

Sunny Acres Mobile Home Park is not your everyday little neighborhood. Some sick things are going on there. When Arrianne is forced to stay with her Mother and Stepdad, she finds that things are far worse than anyone could imagine. Children are literally disappearing, but nobody tattles on anyone. It then begins a life or death for survival for Arrianne.
This story has trigger warnings. But, if you don't have a any, this story will grab you from page one. It is dark, vile and absolutely amazing!!! You will truly be immersed in the characters so much, you'll be cheering on our Main character while hoping things will happen to everyone else. Highly recommended reading!!!

Summary: Arrianne is forced to spend two weeks at the holiday park with her neglectful mother and her partner. Once there, Arrianne starts to learn there's things not quite right about Sunny Acres. Children go missing, feral stray dogs are increasing, and there's a man in trailer 13 who is rumoured to have wripped off his ex partner's arm...

Review: This was so good, it was dark and disturbing, utterly horrific. In such a short story it packs a huge punch, with some extremely horrible events that lead to serious concerns for Arrianne. If you're a fan of extreme horror, this is definitely one to read.

All of the bad things that you have ever heard about trailer parks is in this book but times it by 10 because it’s extreme horror! I could not put this book down. I love the way that Tara describes things and her storytelling is so good. This story is honestly really sad because things that happen in this story do happen in real life and they just get swept under the rug. After reading this I feel like if we had more Eddie’s to get methed up and take care of some “problems” then our world would be a better place.

This book was insane. It was kind of nasty but was written well enough to keep me hooked in. It was extremely descriptive, and I felt the characterization was entirely on point. It was grossly hooking. I couldn’t stop reading even when I thought I should. It also kept me hooked, they kept it active and didn’t slow down with filler. The story had an incredibly insane ending as well. I enjoyed every part of it (even though I was grossed out). Beautiful book. (PS…the hook that got me to read was ‘butt worms’.

EEEEEWWWWW! I received this from Tara herself, and after previously reading Love Bug, I knew to expect it to be rank. And boy did she deliver 😂 Aside from all the gross bits, it's a very deep story with real world issues attached. You know that someone, somewhere is or had experienced this and it's horrifying to think so. And Tara is here to let everyone know. The realities, with all the nitty gritty bits included. Her story telling is one of the best in my opinion for this genre of horror. No-one else can have me this hooked while also nearly wretching haha

Now with that being said... I loved it.

This was disgusting, heartbreaking and genuinely hard to read at times. The way everything was described in all its gory detail made me so uncomfortable, which I feel was exactly the point.

This is definitely not for everyone, and honestly I don't even know who I would recommend it to. 😂 But it was brutal, incredibly well done and I couldn't put it down.

Somebody Meth’d Around and is about to Find Out. The story of a little girl who is sent to her momma’s house for two weeks, only to find herself in the middle of a business where she is the product, and those around her care for humans less than the drugs they fill themselves with. Absolutely disgusting, vile descriptions that will churn your stomach as you race to read the next sentence. Tara’s writing style is train crash addicting, so make sure to check your triggers before your next fix!!
