Or, maybe I'll just skip the crying.

But, this book did put me on an emotional roller coaster. I just don't happen to be a particularly emotional person, so it was more like this:

watch that hill, it's a rough one.

So, we get to go back to our first couple and check in on their relationship. They fell in love after a few days together, so I'm sure there are absolutely no problems or issues facing them.

The growing distance between them, especially since her return to the VCU, had almost taken them back to the start...

You mean the start as in when you wanted to put him in prison and he wanted to kill you? Hmm, maybe things aren't going so well in our young lover's lives after all.

And, so it goes.. The whole book is an emotional clusterfuck as they each go back and forth on whether or not they trust the other one. Every time we get our hopes up that they are going to be okay, something happens that screws it all up again. It is so frustrating! You just want to shake them both and tell them to get over it already.

Can't you see that you're meant to be together?

In the meantime things are really coming to a boiling point in this world. There are those who are trying to get Armageddon to happen, and those who are trying to prevent it. Our heroes are on Team Prevention.

Thank goodness Josh isn't on the team. He totally sucks.

Personally, I'm a little bit on the side of Team Armageddon because I think it would be more fun than Team Prevention's plan of peace and happiness. Peace and happiness is kind of boring in book form. I want chaos, death, and destruction. I know. I'm a sweetheart.

and roast marshmallows over the flames. Bwuahaha!

The best thing about this book, though, was that there were a couple of twists that I really didn't see coming. I love when a book manages to surprise me. And, even better when the surprises are deliciously exposed and I get to do this:

I am shocked! Shocked I tell you!

As usual, the writing is terrific and very enthralling. But, I do need to mention to all of my fellow Americans that these books are written in very British-speak. The words and expressions are so very British that I would maybe struggle with understanding if I wasn't married to my own personal English StudMuffin. Still, it is totally a series worth reading if you like PNR.

5 Who To Trust Stars!

I was shocked that Caitlin and Kane were once again fighting against each other because Caitlin decides to go back to the VCU. She can't let Kane keep her tucked away in his den safe from everyone in Blackthorn. Against Kane's wishes she goes back to work. Even if most of her coworkers are against her. This is nothing new to Caitlin. She's used to being on her own.

Kane has made powerful enemies of his own and is being targeted by the head of the Global Council, Sirius Throme. With the stakes higher than ever before, Kane knows caring for Caitlin makes him vulnerable. Worse, her decision to return to the VCU feels like betrayal. He can't trust her enough to let her in. He defiantly won't trust the VCU and as long as Caitlin's back there he has no choice but to keep things from her. He needs to let her go so he can focus on his enemies and the shit that is going down in Blackthorn.

With a war about to take place and the fourth species popping up all over Blackthorn Kane needs Caitlin's help. Caitlin is feeling used though. She can't keep believing in Kane and him not trusting her.
Will these two finally trust each other? What happens when the VCU shows Caitlin reports about a Kane that she's never witnessed before. Will this make her finally go against Kane and bring him down? Will they figure out how to stop the fourth species from entering Blackthorn? Will they get the needed herbs to give to the Lycans before the full moon comes and they shift?

So much went on in this book. I was up all night reading once again. My feelings were all over the place. I love this series! It is one of my favorite PNR books to read. Vampires, Witches, shifters, Angels the list never ends. These couples are powerful and they love hard when it happens. I seriously can't get enough of any of them!

The action will have you on the edge of your seat.

 photo tXV4SypzCogKs_zpsguqb0pts.gif

The sexy times will have you swooning.

And this one even had me all choked up a few times. The ending defiantly had me looking like this reading.

 photo j1ywOobEJlqQo_zpsvmeid01w.gif

That ending had me a nervous wreck!!

I'm excited to see what's next to come in this series. Lindsey J Pryor left us with a note.

As for what happens next, Jask and Phia will be back in the next installment, Blood Instinct , as we draw ever-closer to the finale.

Wow what a roller coaster ride this was! Wooo ok so this is a continuation of the story left off from book 4. This one follows Caitlin and Kane again - basically to wrap up their relationship (which is from the first book) and the unfolding of the story events.

Caitlin and Kane's relationship can be summoned up as TRUST ISSUES. Holy Shit I needed an aspirin. They did NOT trust each other at all. But good god their attraction and sex was EXPLOSIVE. (I LOVE kane) Every time I thought they would come to trust one another something f'ing happened where their thinking would go right back to using, deceiving, they never really loved them in the first place, secrets, not trusting, etc etc. This goes on for 60 percent of the book, then dammit they basically break up. I was like WTF???

Then the secrets that Kane holds from Caitlin come out because the group (Jask, Phia, Eden, and Jessie) need her. Kane is scared because she chose the VCU instead of him. Hes afraid she doesn't love him and she will run back and tell the secrets to the VCU. Caitlin has tried to prove to him she loves him and he should trust her. But people are on the outside putting fake info on Kane to make her think he doesn't really love her that he is indeed using her. (I wanted to slap the piss out of them both!)

But anyway they have no other chose to take the chance and TRUST. Caitlin comes through and proves that she was trust worthy from the beginning. It was a LONG ass road good god but that ending had me in tears. Yes everything works out, they do get their HEA. I only wish after that point we got more time with them in the post drama. Maybe a little bit of hot sex! Because it was HOT. I did have questions also, is Caitlins life extended now?? Because of Jessie??

Ok unto the story. Lots of stuff happens. I am going to admit that some of the events that happen I was lost. So much stuff. Leila and Caleb?? What the F is going on?! When characters talked to each other it was all cryptic and leaves you hanging. I got most of it but it really was hard to follow. My head was ready to EXPLODE.

I can NOT WAIT till the next book! Maybe things will become more clear. The Author really should write faster. Grrrrrr

This fifth installment in the Blackthorn series tells the story of Kane, a formidable vampire in Blackthorn; and Caitlin Parish, a special agent with the Vampire Control Unit — and a worthy counterpart to Kane. Although these two have struggled with issues of trust, they can’t help being drawn together. But there are obstacles they must overcome, and very real threats that neither one is prepared for.

Surrounded by deceit, the future of Blackthorn is at stake. Other characters play important roles as a sinister plot unfolds, forcing both Kane and Caitlin to question all that they have come to know about the world around them, and each other.

A fascinating and oftentimes brutal world, Blackthorn is filled with vampires, lycans, and other intriguing characters that all have a place in this dark and gritty realm. With intertwining plots, and steamy love scenes, fans of paranormal romance will thoroughly enjoy this series! The author creates stories with depth, fully developed characters, and plenty of imagination!

2022 Reread:

Again the VCU drama is what really gets me. Also the conflict between Kane and Caitlin - ugh both sides had such strong reasons for the distrust and the pain. Angst heaven. Sexy. This is the book where you really hate Rob. Lives up to the first read.

INITIAL THOUGHTS 10/22/21

This one is extra special because we get all the heroes from the previous stories together and interacting with each other! Oof Eden and his cool one liners. Caleb and his unhinged danger. And of course Kane who is actually a really nice guy. That VCU dramaaaa. Cannot wait for Rob to get his comeuppance and omg Meghan 🖤

RTC!! The raving will commence very soon…

FULL REVIEW 10/27/21

To be honest, I was on Kane's side. Caitlin babe, the system is broken, and they will destroy anything good that is left in your life...Run. Run while you still can. Be with Kane, you bunny! But Caitlin goes back to work and you know what. I'm also ok with that. Because we got that spicy VCU drama. And it's so spicy...

I quite like the structure of the Blackthorn series in how we get to revisit each couple, as each couple gets 2 books focused on them. This also makes a lot of sense, because considering the short timelines, this also allows the couples, now that they are an item, to navigate their new relationship together.

In Books 5-8, the couples traverse similar themes, but with higher stakes the second time around. It's almost like an expansion of that lesson they have to learn before they can be with each other. And what's also interesting is that the couple also switches the roles that they serve for one another: if one character was stronger, the beacon in the storm, it is now their turn to be saved. It is their turn for them to be fought for and protected by their partner.

In Blood Dark, the crux of the romance is whether Caitlin can trust Kane or if Kane is just using her. This was also something that Caitlin struggled with in Blood Shadows: How can Kane's version of the past be right if she believes her story of the past is right?

In Blood Dark, they are split on the issue of her return to work. And for both of them, this very action leads them to different interpretations and actions. Kane sees this as a step back in their relationship, so he withdraws from their emotional intimacy, reinforcing boundaries between him and Caitlin. Caitlin, however, sees work as a necessary act of normalcy for her, someone who has had a hard time to open up. It's also an acknowledgement of her mortality, and in connection to this, her need to have her own life, not feel like just someone's girl twiddling her thumbs doing f**k all.

In this universe, vampires cannot turn humans into vampires. Vampires are vampires. They are not immortal but they do live longer than humans and Caitlin, understandably, has questions about their future. Kane and Caitlin have some amazing conversations about worrying about the future versus enjoying what they do have now that feel fresh and new.

In this story, it is really Caitlin's dilemma - does she trust Kane? And there is a lot of agony in how she can't seem to make up her mind, despite knowing she loves Kane and knowing that the VCU is not innocent of corruption. In Blood Shadows, Kane is there for Caitlin as her illusions fall away. But in Blood Dark, there is more of a sense that she is in the dark. She is by herself. Kane can only help her so much, by this point. The vampire's got stuff to do! Saving lives, you know. So, it comes down to Caitlin and if she will fight for her man. And it is a razor-edge margin of error.

But omg… the escape from the Vampire Control Unit was so suspenseful. I was on the edge of my seat. I love reading undercover missions in hard to break in places. And it BURNED to know Caleb and Leila were in the same space - so close yet so far away. Why couldn't they have linked up once. Throw us a bone. 😭😭🥺🥺🥺

And the ending!! It had my jaw dropping and can I just say how much Rob sucks? He literally is the worst. And we've got our pick of vicious, psychotic, power-hungry, selfish, megalomaniacal villains here. Rob is the worst, followed by Homer.

One final thing. I felt like there was a suggestion of people like Caitlin in the Third Species Department, of people who wanted to reform from within. And I was curious to see if this thread would be picked up further in the series. It's not really, although characters like Cameron suggest that there are some center liberals in the Global Council. Recognizing that there are so many threads to expand upon, I also felt like the doctor at the Facility, mentioned in the previous book, Blood Deep, would have also been an interesting character to revisit.

Another fabulous read by Lindsay J. Pryor! Gah, I love this series; and, after this book Kane is providing some competition for Caleb when it comes to being my favorite Blackthorn alpha male. I love Blackthorn's vampiric leaders.

description

But do we care if Kane and Caleb are big bad vampires? Heck to the no. I'm just sitting here going:

description

And speaking of Kane and Caleb in the same sentence, we finally get to see Blackthorn's most powerful vampiric leaders meet face to face; and, if you haven't guessed it yet, neither of them give an inch to each other. Oh, the testosterone in that scene!

description

description

So, this book was the darkest yet of the series I think; and, I feel that the series is only going to get darker from here on out.

The tension and suspense are at killer levels because while Kane, Eden, and Jask have teamed up (as well as their respective love interests), everyone else is out for his/her own agenda; and, it is quite literally every man for himself.

description

While some people are claiming to try to help others, it's obvious that they have their own hidden motives

description

As a result, while you do know which sides some characters fall on, you're left in the dark wondering about exactly what other characters are planning

I love that we got to see more of who Kane is when he's in his element in his own territory; we were really able to connect to Caitlin in this regard as she was able to see sides of him for the first time that she had never seen before.

My heart also really went out to Kane during this book, and we were able to really see his love for Caitlin shine throughout even if he wasn't willing to admit it to her or himself for a while

And those moments, especially for us lady lovers of Kane just make us go…

description

AND

description

AND

description

AND

description

However, while we may have seen a softer side of Kane throughout Blood Dark, he was still his usual badass self; in fact, we got to see Kane in action in Blood Dark more so than we have in any of the other books yet which was awesome.

description

description

He kicks a ton of fourth-species butt which was exhilarating to read and also….hot :P

And these fights were a pretty big deal considering how creepy these new fourth species are that we are introduced to; I don't know which one was worse the stasher or the vyber *shivers*

Lindsay does a great job of really keeping us on our toes with some great twists that she throws throughout the book. While I was suspicious of some characters, I truly did not see it coming for some

description

Pet Peeves (which led to one less star than a 5 star rating)- I'm not spoiler tagging these, so read with caution; it's pretty general, but still...
1) While Kane and Caitlin seem to reach a commitment to each other in the end of Blood Shadows, it feels like they're having to build from the ground up in Blood Dark with how little trust they have in each other which I can understand...to an extent given the situations they are both in.

description

But the back and forth of the angst with them thinking they could trust each other one minute and not the next kind of gave me whiplash; for a long portion of the book, things were looking down and had a doomsday feel to them; the motto of Kane and Caitlin's relationship, for a while, was basically:

description

I really just wanted them to be able to do as they suggest at one point in the book:

description

2) This kind of goes with #1. I also was kind of surprised by Kane's view of Caitlin

3) This may be due to receiving what I think is an ARC, so maybe changes were made to the actual published version- I'm not sure. I feel like the editing of the version I received may have been a bit more rushed. Sometimes, in Lindsay's other books I would catch a grammar mistake here or there but didn't really think anything of it. However, in the version of Blood Dark that I received, there was a high enough frequency of basic errors that I would label it as a noticeable thing that hopefully will not be as noticeable in Blood Instinct.

Questions I have after reading Blood Dark (don't read these if you haven't yet read the book because they reveal major spoilers):

Blood Dark gripped me, broke me, shocked me and then broke me some more.

The pain of the wait for book 5 in the Blackthorn series was more than worth it. Author Lindsay J Pryor delivered more than I could possibly have imagined. With more twists than a loom band - some subtle, some knocking you on your behind with a sledgehammer - the cleverness of the plot can only be applauded. It's stunning!

I can't say which of the books in the Blackthorn series is my favourite, as it always seems to be the one I'm reading at the time. And I've read them all several times over. But I can say that this series is hands down the best series I have ever read. Each book is as strong as the next one and always offer up the unexpected to keep you pinned on the edge of your seat. Simply put - read them all!

It's also debatable which of the Blackthorn heroes is my favourite. But one thing for sure is that master vampire, Kane Malloy, excites me the most (especially when armed with a bow!). In Blood Dark we revisit the relationship between Kane and Vampire Control Unit agent Caitlin Parish, when trust issues are apparent and there are secrets, very important secrets, that will impact massively on the future of Blackthorn. Will Kane risk everything to let Caitlin in? When I said Kane excites me the most, he absolutely does. He also nearly broke me. Yes, I had to line my pillow with tissue last night. There's some unexpected vulnerability shown by Kane, which is sublime and, I have to say, a little cruel to the poor reader. But that bravery is what I love about Lindsay J Pryor's writing.

Though this story revisits Kane and Caitlin, the plot is thickening, timelines have merged and there is an alliance forming between all of the main characters. Well, maybe most! To read Blood Dark is a bit like opening a tin of chocolates. All of your favourites are there and you're keeping a safe eye on them. No-one should touch them. There's also the nasties in the tin, the ones you're secretly willing someone to take them out. Except you need those nasties in there, otherwise you just have a tin of very nice chocolates. You need those nasties to ensure those favourites are longed for and that they shine. And shine those Blackthorn main players do, for there are plenty of nasties in Blackthorn to add the darkness. It's all about survival now.

Oh, and a little question for another Blackthorn boy, Eden Reece. If you're on Team Blackthorn - and I'm on Team Blackthorn, does that mean we're officially bonded?

Be brave and enter the world of Blackthorn. It's dark, ridiculously clever, and incredibly stunning!

Well this book was a welcome return to the couple that started it all human Caitlin and vampire Kane. They were the first couple the author played around with but their turbulent journey was clearly far from over. As this book starts Caitlin is struggling with her work at the agency as few of her coworkers actually trust her anymore. Indeed most of this story does actually impinge on trust issues as the author well and truly hangs her characters out to dry! This couple have huge issues and although as a reader we are privy to their innermost feelings and inadequcies most of this story revolves around the suffering they put each other through.
Now I'd hate anyone to imagine it's just about the tangled relationship and hasten to reassure that the author has one or two more tricks up her sleeve. First there are creatures from the fabled fourth dimension appearing in Blackthorn and then there's the tricky murder investigation that Caitlin is involved in. Kane seems determined to derail her but why? Clearly he is protecting Caleb but what does it all have to do with the much feared prophecy? Then we have the fact that war is pretty much starting to look inevitable as actions by those in power are felt in the world of Blackthorn.
If brutally frank I really did not enjoy the constant back and forth between Caitlin and Kane. Yes I know Kane has his reasons for his evasion but it just felt way to much angst for me and at times I just wanted to bang their heads together! Fear not though as characters from previous books appear here which really opens up the bigger picture and answers are forthcoming. The story isn't quite over though but (hopefully) Caitlin and Kane might just walk away with trust between them. One thing that struck me was just how different this story by a fellow Brit read. Words are used that never seem to appear in bog standard paranormal which made a refreshing change as yes I wear knickers and not the dreaded panties! I mean yuk children are taught doggy not dog to make it seem more cuddly and less threatening , so since when did an item of intimate apparel become scary? Ok rant over but the joy of seeing such words as "mardy" used cannot be downplayed. A good addition to this series but it will leave you wanting more!

I am so glad I gave this series another chance, ladies and gents! What happened is that I loved book one and two, was disappointed in book three and skipped book four... However, when I saw that the main characters in book five are Caitlin and Kane - the couple which made me fall in love with Blackthorn, I HAD to give it another go... and it was darkly delicious!

It's choke full of sensual, sizzling sex, heart-breaking tension and an overall gripping and fascinating storyline. It strongly reminded me of The Maker's Song series by Adrian Phoenix.

Despite their undeniable attraction to each other and love that they won't admit to themselves, Caitlyn and Kane continue to work on the opposite sides of the barricade. He is one of the shadow rulers of Blackthorn - the third species' conclave, which human population would love to destroy once and for all. She is an agent of the enforcement agency VCU, hunting Kane and other criminals alike inside and out of Blackthorn.

There are so many reasons for them to stay apart, and yet despite the evidence piling up, indicating that Caitlyn and Kane will destroy each other, they can not give up their feelings. There is this major conspiracy going on designed to force them to betray each other, and I was figuratively biting my nails and holding my breath, racing through this book.

It's very well written. The tension and urgency is razor-blade sharp. You get sick to your stomach along with Caitlyn when she receives evidence against Kane again and again; you feel bitterness of betrayal, when he sees how Caitlyn might be working to put him behind the bars. The storyline is grand and involves an old prophecy which is supposed to bring in the downfall of the human race, and the rule of the third species. There are a few factions working to make sure that the prophecy will or will not come to life to their benefits.

I am not giving any spoilers, but Blood Dark made me very happy. It's not sappy and it skirts a very fine line between PNR and UF without in your face macho bullshit I am so not fond of.

Kane might be possessive but he is also supremely cold-blooded and rational and keeps his secrets very close to his heart. He asks, not demands, but in a way, where Caitlyn knows - one wrong step, and she will lose him. Same vice versa. The dynamics are similar to Raphael and Cyn (D.B. Reynolds), so if you are a fan, you are very likely to find this series enjoyable. It's dark, violent and genuinely suspenseful. Recommended.

Wow wow and wow again! Lindsay has done it again. Just when you think you are starting to figure things out she goes and blows it out the water!

This book takes us back to the beginning, with the very first characters I fell in love with, Caitlin and Kane. Kane was the first paranormal bad boy Lindsay brought us, and the one which has always remained with me as being the one I would love to meet in real life! And yes, I do know he is purely fictional, I'm not that naive! But I can dream can't I?

This book differs from the others in that it starts to bring together the characters we met in the previous books. Some are coming together to help each other. But there are others who want nothing more than to rid the world of all paranormal beings.

In starting to bring together these characters the author also brings in far more twists and turns to the story, including a few which will surprise and shock fans of the series thus far.

Caitlin really has to dig deep to figure out who she can and can't trust throughout this story. With her own insecurities, with regards to her relationship, coming to the fore, she also has to work through her feelings for Kane. And, indeed, his feelings for her! Can this pair get through intact, or does fate have other plans for them? For fate, read 'the author'!

A brilliant addition to an already brilliant series. And once again, a bit of a cliffhanger right at the end. Something the author is really good at giving us, leaving us breathless and desperate for more.

This is, without question, my favourite series of books ever, and I cannot wait to see what the author brings us next.

With huge thanks to Bookouture and Netgalley for the chance to read this.

It dawned on me while reading Blood Dark - the latest instalment of Lindsay J Pryor's gritty, dystopian paranormal saga Blackthorn - that this series has become the ONLY series that I jump on as soon as it's released. It's the one I count down the days to a new release. It's the one I devour as soon as it's published. It's the one I pimp out to anyone who will listen. In fact, I can't quite remember a time when Blackthorn didn't exist. It's become one of those landmark book discoveries of my life - sitting alongside childhood classics from the likes of Enid Blyton and Judy Blume to my first foray into adult horror from King, Koonzt and Herbert.

It also dawned on me while reading, that Blood Dark is definitely my favourite of the series so far - and yes, I am well aware I say that every time but this time I really mean it. Now, of course, I have a feeling I'll be living my own Groundhog Day after the next release, but right now, it's definitely all about Blood Dark.

Why? Because after four books in which Lindsay has introduced us to the world of Blackthorn, its residents, its dangers, its politics, its uber hot heroes (or anti-heroes if you prefer) and kick-ass heroines, book five is where it really all starts to come together! It's always a mystery to me how Lindsay manages to keep upping the ante each time because quite often sequels (and long-running series in particular) have a tendency to fall a bit flat, failing to recapture that magic of the first book and veering off on a long-winded and slightly disappointing tangent, but there's never been any fear of that with Blackthorn! Each book is more intoxicating than the last and with each book comes more threads expertly woven together until we have an intricate spiders web of intrigue, mystery, excitement and (yes, yes, yes!) super hotness.

Blood Dark takes us back to where it all started, with the irrestibly dark Kane Malloy and everyone's favourite VCU agent Caitlin Parish and I must admit, having falling in love with each of Lindsay's main men in turn, I was pleasantly surprised to discover my love for Malloy was completely rekindled - sorry Jask (I still love you!). As always with Blackthorn, Blood Dark had me trying to second guess every move and word of Kane and Caitlin, as they try to live with the aftermath of all the revelations of Blood Shadows (Book one). I'm not going to go into detail on the story itself because that's just going to lead me down Spoiler Street and let's face it. nobody wants to go there, but suffice to say, as with all the Blackthorn books, I spent the whole time never knowing quite who to trust and rejoicing in the fact that Blackthorn is always so tantalisingly unpredictable. Chuck in the ever present shadow of the sinister Global Council, the ghoulish quality of the chilling fourth species showing up in every nook and cranny and not to mention the chance to get all our Blackthorn boys together, if you haven't shown your allegiance to Team Blackthorn yet, now is definitely the time to don your fan girl t-shirt!

Blood Dark gave me everything I could have wished for and more....excitement, chills, cold-shower moments and YES even tears!

A five star read all the way - in fact, if I could, I'd give it a gazillion more!

Now all I have to do is wait for the next instalment .....*sighs*

Yay! Kane is back. Oh boy…. Is Kane back!

I love the Blackthorn series. For those who haven't yet discovered these books and somehow stumble upon this review, do yourself a huge favour and buy them. The series starts with Blood Shadows and is followed up with Blood Roses, Blood Torn, Blood Deep and now Blood Dark.

Eventually there will be eight books in this wonderful PNR series which, in a sea of fair-to-middling literature, stands head and shoulders above the rest. The stories are wonderfully crafted, and believe me, you will be taken on a rollercoaster of emotions. And not an annoying plot hole in sight!

This particular book takes us back to Kane and Caitlin's story, originally discovered in the first novel in the series, Blood Shadows. And I couldn't be happier. Although all the male and female leads are amazing, strong, and compelling characters, Kane is my favourite so it was wonderful to be back with him once more.

I won’t give away anything with this review, other than to say you really start to figure out just how important our master vampire is to the whole story Blackthorn is crafting. He is so much more than a vampire who is good with a bow. He is the catalyst…..

I'm already looking forward to Blood Instinct, the sixth book in the series. Actually, that's an understatement. I'm literally counting the days!
Buy the books, read them, tell your friends about them and, most of all, enjoy them.

Good god! 5 stars just isn't enough....

He might be a vampire who barely has a heart beat but
'Kane's heart wouldn't stop pounding' well, as a mere mortal I couldn't contain my heart beat - it pounded, it raced and at some points I swear it stopped.

I'm actually speechless this is so so good. I'm also a little hoarse from yelling 'No Caitlin No!'

Thank you netgalley for the ARC in return for an honest review

4.5* wow, that was flippin' intense! So much angst and conflict as our first couple try to navigate this dark world with so much riding on their actions and interactions. The author threw in many twists and turns that focused on the couple and whether they would make it or be caught up in the evil forces surrounding them...on all sides. Highly recommend for those who love romance, pnr, dark world building and political intrigue.

OhMyGoodLord! I write this with tears still streaming down my eyes. The first scene in which Kane, Caleb, and Jask are put in the same room together, I had to read the entire section twice, just cause IT WAS THEM! Then to see these charachers come together, the girls, the guys, the shared understandings and OfCourse, it would Not be Blackthorn WithOut the shared MISUNDERSTANDINGS, made this story in short AMAZING. As a lover of Kane and Caitlin I was so hesitatanat to read this story knowing it was going to pull my heart strings to see their love stretched so thin, to a breaking point. But of course that same love was the reason why I just HAD to know. Their first story, Blood Shadows, made me fall in love with them as individual characters and as a couple, Blood Deep resolidified my love for not just them but my undying support of Blackthorn and my love for Ms Pryor not only as a story teller and writer but as an true interpreter of what real in depth love means. Their is no yin without yang, no love without pain, no trust without sacrificing and no belief without faith. Once again, I'm left with a shaking realization, I HAVE to wait another LONG while for my next Blackthorn fix. This, hands down my absolute favorite story yet. This story, the deception, lies and hidden truths just keeps improving. And most definitely, my favorite book of 2015! Keep the breakables at a distance for those angry moments and the tissues handy for those others. Well, Well worth it all.

Vampires, Lycans, 4th dimension creatures, OH MY! Ok so this was a really good book. You have Powerful Vampires, Human police, love, sex, and action.

This book is about a cop Caitlin who is infatuated with a master vampire Kayne, who in turn wants to let her in but is suppose to be a loner. They had a whirlwind 2 weeks together, but now reality has come back to haunt them. She goes back to work with the police department which he hates, so there is issues with why she would do it. There are so many things that happen in this book, I couldn’t possibly go into them all.

I liked this book a lot. Sometimes the main characters Caitlin and Kane made me want to choke them for their stubbornness. Nevertheless I couldn’t put this book down.

So basically, this book will make you laugh, make you crazy, and make you sad. The characters are well developed and the story is told from different perspectives.

Check it out!

Awesome series!!!!! Lindsay Pryor has nailed this book! Between the explanation of the character's and all that is going on. This book is jam pack full of possibilities of what is to come of Blackthorn....

Blood Dark is a great book!!! Kane and Caitlin both are passionate about their own romance, locals and the people in them. In Blood Dark the character's from the series are starting to merge together to fight all the evil nasties that are about to rain hell down on them. But can Kane and Caitlin set aside their own trust issues to help each other or will they be destroyed along with Blackthorn. Only time will tell!!!

Ok so SHIT. HAS. GOT. REAL!!!

I'm so enthralled with this series it's like I don't know what's real life and what's not.

We focus on Caitlin and Kane again in this book. It's hot. It's dangerous. It's heart stoppingly sexy. I tell you what it's like, it's like B&J's Phish food. This is my all time favourite ice cream and if you've had it you know there's,

• choc ice cream - win,
• marshmallow fluff - win
• and little chocolate fish - win

Now, throw them all together and what have you got? Ding Ding Ding. We have a winner!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love many paranormal romance series. I have about 4 series that are my absolute favourites. This is at No 1.

I received a copy from NetGalley thanks so much! My fav characters Kane & Caitlin back on the page again❤️- Loved the book! Some scenes just tug on the heartstrings- we see a more vulnerable side to Kane which is refreshing and also more kickass!

Love Lindsay's writing and Storytelling- this series gets better and better! As much as I want to see what happens in next 3 books - the more I don't want it to end! Need to know when and who Blood Instinct is about! ☺️

Let’s start with my favorite quote from Blood Dark: “Never a dull moment in Team Blackthorn.”

Oh yes…that quote is perfect for this story. Blood Dark is the 5th in the series of dark PNR books by Lindsay J. Pryor about the dystopian world of Blackthorn. If you haven’t read them yet, well you need to begin with Blood Shadows, so go get it now…go! You will absolutely love this series, but you must start with that one!

Each story is self-contained in a sense, as each focuses on one particular couple. Yet each meld together seamlessly to follow elements of the longer story arc of Blackthorn, so reading them in order is essential for maximum enjoyment of the overall plot. And trust me, you will want to do that!

Blackthorn is a dystopian world where the 3rd species (vampires, lycans, etc.) are separated from the rest of humans by regulations that keep them in the locale of Blackthorn – a dark, degraded environment rife with pollution and danger…with graduating areas of social stratification for regular humans in the nearby locales of Lowtown, Midtown, and Summerton. Blackthorn is gritty and dark, but there are those that are trying to make a difference and change that for the better….and head off the catastrophic ramifications of a vampire prophecy as well as stop the villainous self-serving actions of the head of the Global Council. And did I mention the appearance of elements of the 4th species…eeek! This is worldbuilding and storytelling at its best.

If you love intense psychological drama with action, adventure and romance (including deliciously hot love scenes – get out your fans), this is for you! The plot featuring clever and sexy master vampire Kane Malloy and brave and intelligent Vampire Control Unit agent Caitlin Parish beginning in Blood Shadows and continuing in Blood Dark has been nothing short of exhilarating.

Lindsay’s characters are multi-faceted and complicated. You feel deeply for each of them, as you see the complexity of their relationships as well as events in Blackthorn through Kane’s eyes as well as Caitlin’s. Kane, the navy-eyed, tall, dark and sexy master vampire has an entrancing smile and a wry sense of humor, but his main job is trying to protect Blackthorn. He wants to protect the people from the corruption of the Global Council as well as prevent the vampire uprising from the prophesy all the while battling his own deep feelings for Caitlin – but whether he can truly trust her as a VCU officer remains at the crux of things. Caitlin, while being an agent of the VCU and basically working for the Global Council, on the other hand, opens herself up to Kane, giving him her trust more than once - yet Kane repeatedly keeps her in the dark and is selective with what he tells her…but he has his reasons…so keep reading. I laughed and cried (more than once) and at various times found myself wanting to grab each of them and shake some sense into them…yes, it’s easy to get wrapped up with the characters in this series because their psychology and reactions are written so well. It is very easy to become fully immersed in the story.

As well as introducing new and interesting characters…Meghan and Ziel for example, Blood Dark also brings together the other couples from Blood Roses, Blood Torn, and Blood Deep to join the fight against the corruption of the Global Council as well as the looming disaster of the vampire prophecy…although whether they are all united in this is something I’ll leave for you to read. ;)

Without giving any spoilers, in Blood Dark, the stakes keep getting raised for our protagonists both personally as well as for the greater good of Blackthorn - and just when you think you know what is happening, there is a twist that you never saw coming….one, in fact, made me ‘Shiver’…ahem….and although I’m pretty good at picking up on nuances and hints of things, I was genuinely blown away by some of the twists… Yes…there is more than one….but then, that makes the story even better. ;) This book is a page-turner…there truly is never a dull moment. I could have left my review earlier, but actually read this book twice upon receiving it…it was that good!

Lindsay J. Pryor has done it again…this book is a winner! This series continues to captivate me and the next one in the series – Blood Instinct – can’t come fast enough!!

Quick Review – Turn off your phone, cancel your plans, don’t answer your door, chill the wine. This book is an absolute page turner which will have you hooked from the outset. BUY it and immerse yourself into the intense and wonderful World that is Blackthorn. Don’t delay!

Longer Review –

Blood Dark is the 5th instalment out of a series of 8 books about the World of Blackthorn. The previous books Blood Shadows, Blood Roses, Blood Torn and Blood Deep all introduce pivotal characters, two at a time. Blood Dark is the first of the books where you see interaction between these characters as the plot lines interweave and, as a consequence, the series really picks up pace.

As a backdrop, the World of Blackthorn consists of 4 towns; Blackthorn, Lowtown, Midtown and Summerton. Blackthorn is dangerous, gritty, over populated, polluted and Summerton is a direct contrast, green, full of open spaces and beautiful.

The inhabitants of this world are rated on a sadistic points system (for example how good your bloodline is), and depending on how they fare, this will determine their future potential, employment status, social status, but most importantly, where they are allowed to live. Summerton is for the elite, the affluent and is full of green spaces, great schools and medical care, where as at the opposite end of the spectrum, Blackthorn is full of vampires, lycans, who ever is determined to be social detritus, not forgetting the convicts that have been discarded by the state. In Blackthorn, there is no funding for education, social wellbeing or medical care. It is survival of the fittest. Strangely enough, in this unjust and corrupt system, the suppressed factions within Blackthorn are at breaking point.

Blood Dark is the continuation of the story of Kane and Caitlin (which began in Blood Shadows) and the problems that their ongoing relationship is causing, both individually and together. I thought I had it all worked out, and yet I couldn’t have been more wrong as to where their story would take me. It is full of plot twists and turns and, as well as being an emotional rollercoaster it has an intensity about its content that is addictive and whilst each story does answer some questions, more arise as you progress!

Lindsay J Pryor has managed to create not only a fantastically believable backdrop (Blackthorn is a character in its own right) but her characterisation is well rounded and robust. Each of her anti heroes and heroines are flawed in some way, but they also display loyalty, kindness and determination. Its all about shades of grey – how characters behave in given difficult situations does not always determine who they are. Who is to say that they are the heroes or the villains of the piece? Its all down to perspective. It is a joy to read books with intelligent heroines, and the internal monologues highlighting the characters’ thought processes as they deal with whatever challenging situations they find themselves in, are wonderful.

But, as with any good story, there is also plenty of conflict to keep you on the edge of your seat, as the main characters do tend to suffer from an inability to trust and communicate well with each other, as well as having stubborn streaks. All of which combine to make you turn the page to find out what happens next.

Personally, I think that Lindsay is immensely talented, I love her style of writing and I think that she deserves every success. The only downside is what am I going to do with myself until Blood Instinct comes out and the JASKFEST can begin. Go Team Blackthorn! xx

The latest offering in The Blackthorn Series, Blood Dark by Lindsay J. Pryor is finally out. The fifth installment continues with the story of Kane Malloy and Caitlin Parish, introduced in the first book, Blood Shadows.

I’ve been waiting for the release of Blood Dark for months and most definitely was interested in how the storylines from the previous books would merge with one another. Now, if you’ve not read the series, might I suggest you pick up the first four books, Blood Shadows, Blood Roses, Blood Torn and Blood Deep and read them in order. It will be a fruitful exercise and you’ll come to love this versatile series complete with vampires, lycans, witches, angels and other creatures, creating a paranormal alter-world that is well thought out and entertaining for those who love this genre.

The storylines from each of the books do build on each other and having the background will put Blood Dark in perspective. There are many moving parts and the convergence of these sub-plots is built around a prophecy that is the nucleus putting the whole together.

Let’s talk about the dynamics between Kane and Caitlin. My favorite couple, these two have a love story born out of sheer hatred and deception. Somehow, through all the bad, they formed a bond and it is obvious neither is complete without the other. But trust is a major point of contention between these two and more often than not, I wanted to throw my phone (yes, I read on my phone using my beloved Kindle app) against the wall because despite Caitlin’s faith in Kane, his reluctance to reciprocate was nearly maddening.

Their chemistry is palpable and the anger and mistrust between them cannot contain their feelings for each other. I couldn’t imagine Kane ever letting Caitlin go because despite his own uncertainty about why she returns to her job as a VCU agent, he loves her.

Ah yes, the point of contention, returning to her job and being responsible for hunting Kane creates a chasm between the lovers. Caitlin has drawn sides, at least in Kane’s mind and well, all I can say is, he is a fool. Caitlin has her own insecurities about Kane’s secrets but her faith in him always prevails.

The main players in Blackthorn, Caleb Dehain and Jask Tao make solid appearances and are critical to the prophecy and the survival of Blackthorn. Kane’s nemesis, Sirius Throme delivers blow after blow to the lovers who try to stay a step ahead of his plot to destroy them. Blood Dark is action-packed, thrilling and a great love story all in one.

Pryor is a solid storyteller. Her writing is well composed and fluid. Blood Dark is complex with a number of sub-plots that intertwine beautifully. Using strong internal and external conflict coupled with a good dose of mystery, Pryor keeps the momentum building.

Overall, I am pleased with Blood Dark. An avid reader of paranormal / gothic romance, Pryor is a favorite. If you haven’t had the chance to pick up this series, I encourage you to do so.

My rating: 4 out of 5 stars.

Wow, wow, wow, wow, and wow again!

Release date was earlier this week and I couldn't wait to get started with the 5th installment in this fantastic, incredibly awesome Blackthorn series by Lindsay J. Pryor.

Blood Dark gripped me from the first page to the last.
The story was absolutely stunning!
The best book of the series for me so far.

If you still haven't read the 4 previous books, I greatly encourage you to try it from the beginning!

So what is it about?

Kane Malloy is the East's most powerful vampire in Blackthorn, a polluted and over-populated district where vampires (and the fewer numbered lycans) are forced to live. They’re given the dregs in terms of location, provision, opportunities and rights. It is also used as an overflow system for law-evading humans (cons) extradited from the penitentiary across the border. These humans are tagged and unable to leave Blackthorn.

Caitlin Parish is human and one of the best VCU (Vampire Control Unit) agents. They’re the elite, specialist units involved in tracking and convicting known law-evaders or those with detrimental influential power.

You can read Kane and Caitlin’s turbulent story in Blood Shadows, book 1 in the Blackthorn series.

« Are you perving on me again, Parish? »
She smiled. « That’s what you get for having a lot to perve on. »

Both Malloy and Parish are passionate, loyal, brave, smart, and yes trust-worthy and manipulative in their own way, but the problem is they’re fighting on opposing sides.

« But his need was too great.
His need to have total control.
His need to avoid the compulsion to look in her eyes knowing there was a part of him that, for the greater good of Blackthorn, was using her. »

The big bad villain in the story is Sirius Thorme, the TSCD (Third Species Control Division) leader and Parish’s boss. Thorme wants Kane Malloy and in order to achieve his goal he has threatened an invasion of Blackthorn if the Master vampire doesn't surrender. And if he has to betray Parish, he will without hesitation. Blackthorn is his chessboard and he wants it floundering since Kane's shown him soul transference can happen.

This is the basic plot of the book, but there’s also the intriguing Prophecy behind all the twists and turns:

« She’s not going to make it. »
Kane stopped. Every part of him not to turn back around, not to ask more. Instead, he turned as if his feet were in quick-dying cement. « Who? »
« The one you love. »

Enjoy reading Lindsay J. Pryor’s incredible writing!

So much comes to a head in this fifth installment of the Blackthorn series… and so many possible doors are opened.

When Caitlin returns to the Vampire Control Unit, the very place she was working when she first met Kane, the vampire love of her life – it hits Kane hard. And it will test, to the utmost limit, their love and trust for each other. Yet Kane has held something close to his vest, so to speak. As the ugly threads of betrayal and mistrust weave their way through Caitlin and Kane’s relationship neither will be certain their love for each other will survive.

Kane, Jack and Caleb, the leaders of the third species will meet face to face. And evil will rear its truly ugly face. The characters from previous stories in this series will make appearances. Yet, not everyone is involved to help the overall cause but to hinder it.

If you haven’t read the Blackthorn series from the very beginning, might I strongly suggest that you do that and soon. Yes, you would be able to enjoy and follow Blood Dark without reading them. But you might not get the subtle nuances in phrases or actions or even mannerisms if you haven’t traveled this road with all the characters from the start. And I will admit that before I dive into a new release in this series, I go back and re-read the previous stories so that the entire universe of Blackthorn flows like a movie to me. It’s what I do to immerse myself in this world that is not ours but unique to itself.

I can think of many words to describe Blood Dark – stunning, explosive, riveting, angry, frustrated, sad and joyous are simply a few that adequately describe this world and this particular story. But I think the best words are the ones that you will use as you read Dark Blood and let it take over your imagination and perhaps your heart as well.

And if you couldn’t tell – I would highly recommend this story for anyone who knows the Blackthorn universe, anyone who enjoys a deep down experience of being sucked into another world and left breathless. No, that’s not an extreme thought and you’ll know that once you read Blood Dark.

*I received an e-ARC of Blood Dark from the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. That does not change what I think of this novel.*

**I was provided an ARC in exchange for an honest review, contains spoilers**

I don't even know where to start. I couldn't put this book down but at the same time had to pace myself because I didn't want it to end! The story picks up with Kane and Caitlin, and how they're coping with the aftermath of Caitlin's testimony against the TSCD and her family. We see how their relationship is tested as well as their loyalties to their races. There were a few times where the reader was given insight to other characters, such as Morgan or Throme, but mostly the POV is Kane and Caitlin's.

I won't rehash the book as I know many other reviewers will do so. But the majority of the book is the back and forth between Kane and Caitlin about what their true motives are and if they can trust one another. At times it became tedious: she trusts him despite everything, but then more evidence is presented to her that makes her doubt him again. And again. And again. But in the end, it is evident why the author chose to pursue this angle to the extent she did, and it makes me even more interested to see the lengths Throme and his cronies will go to to get what they want. The chemistry between Caitlin and Kane is even better than Blood Shadows, and the final revelation of their true feelings and motivations was heart-wrenching. And of course, the book leaves you salivating for more! What exactly is the relationship between Caleb and Kane? What will Caleb do now? And you know Rob is going to have to show his face again, so I can't wait for that showdown!

The only cons for me were some obvious editing mistakes and the overuse of the phrase "he tongued his incisor." But the action, love scenes, plot, and characters were so good and so genuine that in the end I could ignore the mistakes. And I loved the use of British lingo!

If you haven't read the series yet, this is not a stand-alone book but I can't urge you enough to pick up a copy of the first book, Blood Shadows, and jump head first into the world of Blackthorn.

Starts between the time when the Lycan children had all been found except the girl, Tuly and when she is returned by Caleb. It’s told from Caitlin and Kane’s POVs making it a continuation of their relationship.

I hesitated reading this as I know how intense it would be and I was right. But even so, I couldn't stop crying for Kane & Caitlin. But I’m glad I did get through it. It was worth it. The thrilling, non-stop story line made it so I couldn't put it down (read almost all night.)

If you haven’t read the previous book recently and/or took good notes, you’re going to be confused as to who’s doing what, how they feel, what they are trying to accomplish and how it all fits in with everything else. Because the different scenes are woven in and out of the previous books scenes. It’s like all the scenes and info from the previous four books was sifted for the important story line stuff, then turned to Kane & Caitlin’s POVs. The new scenes are mostly due to the different POVs until we get halfway through the book. Then the story line continues. This has one of the best and the most infuriating endings

I love how Caitlin & Kane’s relationship is put through the wringer. There could have been less ‘I trust or I don’t’’ stuff, but it did make sense in the ‘what the…?’ ending.

Quick Thoughts: 1)Somehow I thought this was the last book, but I’m glad it continues. There’s definitely more story.

2)I never did figure out what MUG was.

3)I don’t’ like Erica and I don’t trust Meghan.

Fave Scenes: the nilkim, the ring of salt, finding Tamara, Caitlin’s trap and the defib.

Blood Dark, the fifth instalment in Lindsay J Pryor's Blackthorn series and how aptly named. It's a dark and dangerous roller coaster ride that pulls on your heart strings from every direction!
It centres around Kane and Caitlin, the first couple from Blood Shadows, however all the players are coming together and the much anticipated first meeting between the three 3rd species leaders (Kane, Caleb and Jask) did not disappoint! We were allowed to see much deeper inside the soul of the master vampire, Kane and his role and reason for being in Blackthorn (love his choice of weapon). His relationship with Caitlin was stretched to the limit (at times I wanted to knock their heads together), but their chemistry together sizzled even hotter than in Blood Shadows. All the major characters make an appearance (plus a few new ones too), each adding to the tension surrounding the impending prophecy.
This book twisted and turned, just when I thought I had something figured out, I realised I hadn't at all! I laughed, I cried (there are some tear jerkers that made me shiver.....) but I didn't want this book to end. It will be a long wait for the next instalment to this amazing story. Well done Lindsay, can't wait for more Blackthorn :-)
