On Christmas Eve, Diane sits on the floor of the dressing room, counting down the minutes until midnight. She can't wait to open the last letter her husband, Chris, managed to write, without having any idea that his life would be radically upended by a severe accident the very next day. Everything was supposed to be different, but instead of a joyful holiday, Chris now lies in a hospital bed in a coma. Meanwhile, Diane has retreated into the heavy silence of the dressing room, carrying a massive pain in her heart. In the pocket of his coat, she found this year's letter. On the envelope, just like every other year, are the words "to be read on December 25th". She knows she should wait until morning, but the longing overwhelms her; she only promises herself that she will hold out until midnight. To pass the hours and feel close to him again, she takes out of the box the 14 letters he had written to her year after year for Christmas, as a special tradition of theirs, and begins to read them one by one, from the first to the last.
Thank you to the author for allowing me to read this early!
This book follows the story of Chris and Diane. Every year, Chris writes her a letter for Christmas. I thought it was really sweet! I wasn’t sure how I felt about him writing and giving her letters about when they were broken up; I had mixed feelings about that.
It was a super quick read and it’s not too Christmassy if that’s something you don’t like. Every letter was written at Christmas, but as reflections of the year as a whole.
Overall, really enjoyed this book and thought they were super cute!
What a way to start the 1st of November :) with a beautiful novella. This was so touching and loving. A little christmas miracle - Diane and Chris - a love story so undeniable. It was beautiful to see the struggle and then the success, but always choosing each other in different ways. Life is hard but it's how you handle it that makes the difference. Hardships happen but beauty can come from it.
Such a sweet quick novella about true love against all the odds. I loved reading the letters from Chris to Diane. I could feel their connection and their struggles and how they almost did not find their way back to each other. Super sweet ending that makes you believe in forever.
1.5⭐️ I’m probably the minority but I didn’t like this book at all. I liked the letter format but couldn’t stand Chris. I hated how he didn’t listen to Diane, was overbearing when she wasn’t interested in him anymore. I hated the constant guilt trip about how Diane felt or how their life changed when she was successful. It did not scream beautiful Christmas romance to me. I spent the entire book wishing Diane would move on.
This book was a quick read but outside of the Christmas letters, nothing about this book screamed Christmas. Some parts felt rushed and I couldn’t follow but overall, it was okay.
I thought the concept of this book was cute - writing letters each year on Christmas and it was, but I found myself confused at times and questioned more than once how this novella was not nearly as Christmasy as the title and cover made it seem. I wanted to love it more. Three stars!
