Jessie Reynolds has no idea when she moves to Blue Cove, that she will be sharing her life with a ghost. A young pastor has been murdered, and Jessie finds herself following the trail of that death into the dark and deadly world of organ trafficking. Jessie is soon introduced to the detective in charge of the case. Matt Parker is a tall, scruffy, ruggedly handsome man who takes an instant dislike to her and the feeling is mutual. He wants her out of his case and she finds herself entangled in it. The tension between them mounts and so does the attraction.

Not enough emotional pull for me, but mystery lovers might like it.

I read the first 110 pages and then jumped to the last 22 pages. My problem was nothing got my emotions going. It’s like the main character Jessie is doing everyday things, going here, going there, meeting and chatting with people. The author didn’t get into the characters’ feelings in a way that got my feelings. I wasn’t drawn in, my mind wanted to wander. This is a murder mystery. Things are discovered to provide clues. The bad guys are caught at the end. There is a tell all on the last few pages providing answers and whys.

I received this book at the RT Convention. I thought it might be romance. But it’s not. There is a couple who meet and work together on a murder case. But there is not enough relationship focus to call it a romance. No showing or growing of feelings between them. Maybe something happened in the pages I didn’t read.

The ghost of the murder victim appears several times.

DATA:
Narrative mode: 3rd person. Story length: 310 pages. Swearing language: mild. Sexual content: none that I read. Setting: current day New England coast. Copyright: 2012. Genre: paranormal mystery.

Yes, I agree with other Amazon reviewers of this very commendable debut novel by Iona Morrison. Reading it, you certainly wouldn’t think it was her first.

Believable characters and a briskly paced plot involve and carry you along to the heart-stopping, dramatic conclusion. Small-town America, with sinister undertones of badness (shades of Blue Velvet) happening, ironically, around a church, is vividly evoked. And a tang of the paranormal is stirred into the tale to produce a spicy, enjoyable mix.

I didn’t see the horrific point of the title until some way in (shocking realisation!) or guess the identity of no. 1 bad guy at all, so kudos to Iona for that. And yes; she’s set the scene for more highly readable mysteries in Blue Cove to come, hopefully.

Highly recommended!

This is the first book I read from this author and let me tell you that I loved it! Such a good book with great characters that keeps you obsessed with every page since the first one. The ending of this book.. come on! I just didn´t expect it! Can´t wait to read other books from this great writer! Amazing job! a must-read!. A fantastic book that has it all! I love a good mystery, and a little romance makes it even better. No vulgar language takes it over the top. The relationship between Jessie and Matt is so well represented, I can't wait to see what happens next. The Harvest Club is fast-moving and peppered with humor. I highly recommended this book

Interesting storyline once we finally got to it. I skimmed over large sections bypassing "fluff" trying to get to the meat of the story; this book could have been shorter. Characters were OK but mostly one-dimensional and stereotypical: the beautiful, feisty, strong female journalist and the handsome, rough cop who start off sparring with each other.

I had this book in my life retriever finally picked it up to read once I did I couldn't put it down. So many twists and turns kept pulling me in and thinking about it when I wasn't reading it.

What do you get when you take a girl, Jessie Reynolds, out of the city and move her to a small town with a new job at the local church, add the ghost of a former pastor, horribly murdered and seeking justice; a dashing police detective using Jessie for bait to capture the killer; one strange accident after another? You get this teasing read by Iona Morrison, who knows how to weave a tale with weft and warp so tight you will miss the clues and warnings in front of your face.

I THOUGHT I knew where the trail was leading, but I would have been dead early on with my suspicions, along with all the people being picked off one by one. It's a great puzzle, with enough twists to keep you guessing to the very end.

READ THIS BOOK! Like me, you'll have a new author on your favorites list!

The Harvest Club is the first of the Blue Cove mysteries, and I loved it. I enjoyed following Jessie Reynolds in her search for a new life…and her search for answers in a sinister murder case that kept me guessing. There’s a lot of chemistry between her and Detective Matt Parker, and as the danger escalated, I was genuinely worried for them. Can’t wait to read the next book in the series!

Horribly irritating main character.

I'm having a really difficult time handling the main character. There's no age mentioned, but time references have been made, so it's placing her in her late 20's or early thirties, but she acts like a high school student with her responses so far in the book.
Overall the writing isn't bad: the plot line is good, but the dialogue is horrid with this "Jessie" girl. The main characters friend is literally more memorable than her, but just barely.

There's a part where she goes to an investigator to learn about a recent murder and he gives her the usual response, but with a bunch of attitude and she just freaks out.
She's supposedly this big shot news writer from New York City, but has clearly never had a conversation with a rude police official? Like what? She reacts over nothing and storms off.
I only finished this book so I could mark it as read and so it would stop being the book that popped up when I opened my kindle app.

I'm not much of a reader, and a book really has to grab my attention early, and keep it. This book did just that. Iona Morrison's got a real way with telling the story of Jessie that makes you connect with her character from the get go. The relationship between Jessie and Matt is so well represented, I can't wait to see what happens next. One specific thing I enjoyed is that Iona is able to marry a wholesome, Christian-like content with some paranormal activity - which for this reader was a big hit! I'm already half-way through her second novel "Not for Sale" and have to tell you - it's better than Harvest Club. KUDOS to Iona Morrison, and here's to the next several novels in her series!

Reminded me of Nancy Drew

The author shows promise I just couldn't get past the fact that the heroine is perfect. The main character is perfect she has wacky friends just like Nancy, they do not encroach on the heroine but are there to assist. I think this author shows promise, but it will be hard to keep such big cases going g in such a small town, that again is perfect. I noticed the Nancy drewness even more in the second book and did not finish it so did not review it. Once I noticed the similarities to Nancy Drew, it was all over for me. I definitely will try a different story by this author.

Enjoyable Murder Mystery

Although I am rather tired of the handsome hero who can't stand the adorable heroine which is code for "they'll end up madly in love", it was easy to ignore my annoyance because of the clever storyline. Murder in a small town is just the tip of the iceberg and our heroine starts chipping at the ice setting off shockwaves that endanger her life. With a few twists along the way the criminals finally get what they deserve and so do the good guys. Certainly not great literature, but an enjoyable murder mystery just the same.

DNF. I could barely make it past the sample of this one. The way it's written comes across as too YA for my taste. Everything the MC thinks comes across like a teenager, and every other sentence ends in an unnecessary exclamation mark. Which made my brain assume the character had a valley girl style voice.

And it just wasn't working for me. Oh silly me!

See what I did there? That's how this book reads. No thanks. Onward.

The Harvest Club doesn't make an appearance until halfway through the book, and then it is just there. No real background is given, at first, and it feels like I might have missed pages. That being said, I was intrigued by the mystery and the ghostly interactions between Jessie and Gina. I could have used more of that actually, because the "romantic" interactions between Jessie and Matt were so painfully awkward.

Without giving away the plot the story line in "The Harvest Club" focuses on exploits of a young woman newly arrived in a small New England costal village following a hectic ten year stint as a reporter for a large New York City newspaper. The quaint, quite village that she expected turns out to be anything but, leading to a pretty good murder mystery full of surprise twists and turns. I recommend it.

Great read! The Harvest Club is fast moving and peppered with humor. Iona’s descriptive wording made it easy to visualize every detail and the twists in the plot kept me wanting to look ahead to see what was going to happen next. I couldn’t put the book down and can’t wait to read the next one! As I was reading, I kept thinking that The Harvest Club would make an awesome movie!

Not really a ghost story.

This was more of a romance novel, kind of a chick flick in a book. It did have a topical subject related to what the "Harvest Club" was harvesting, so I gave it three stars.

Not my cup of tea

The first thing you need to remember when reading this book is that it is fiction. It is unrealistic in most of the plot sequences and the characters are poorly developed. I read the whole book but really didn't enjoy it.

Ugh. Terrible, I only made it 15% through and that's only because I was desperate for something to read with no WiFi connection available to download something better! I wanted to slap that jerk "Matt" and possibly the main character "Jessie" too, for allowing him to speak to her that way.

Page turner

Action with some undercurrent of romance and the supernatural always draws me in. It was a fast read. Well written. Great for fans of Nora Roberts and Heather Graham.

Meh

It was ok...needed more character development. The supposed dislike between M and J was way too forced and not authentic feeling.

Eh.

Shallow and formulaic. Needs a lot of refinement. I didn't quit before the end, but it was a close thing.

Uninteresting

The writing was a little boring and basic. The premise was a good idea, but sophomoric. It helps with insomnia.
