·"In her heart of hearts, she wanted that love. And that scared her because she could lose herself in loving Benedict.”·

If you’ve been following me for a while, you’re probably thinking why the hell would I read this? And the answer is simple. To quote the main character in this book: “Why not?” It was free (I downloaded it from Amazon), I’ve never read anything on this genre and I felt like going wild (?)

The book in itself is a quick read with more romance than erotica (which I am thankful for!) and with some family drama bringing the main characters together.
My main issues with the story is that I felt Pilar kept saying A (“insert feminist-slash-self-sufficient woman thought) and wishing for B (insert housewife cliché) and the book kept going on and on between those poles and I got a bit irritated. I have no issue with a feminist character or a housewife either, but make up your damn mind, woman!

Another thing that bugged me a bit was the fact that 89% of the book was builing up to two main conflicts that get solved magically over-night and the ending is basically a “buy my next novel” to find out more, something I don’t particularly appreciate in any book of any genre.

Other than that, I found it interesting enough to keep me reading all the way till the end and I enjoyed digging in Benedict’s and Pilar’s past and their long-due love story (because that was as far from an affair as I am from being a good singer!)

I'm on a junk kick, so the standards are shifted accordingly. That said, this surprised me with its writing quality: I really enjoyed Pilar's voice (points for diversity, too) - she was clever, funny, realistic, and not overly dramatic. I also liked that the romance worked on realistic lines, and no one abandoned their life dreams for orgasms or anything.

A sweet read.

I liked the character of Pilar. She was honest, hardworking, strong, and caring. She took over the care of her teenage brother after her parents died.....and that in itself was darn brave! Now she is struggling in that angry teenage years and feeling like she failed her parents. She keeps hoping everything will turn out okay and he will graduate so she can flee her growing attraction to her sexy boss, Benedict.

Strong and sexy Benedict does not want her to leave him....and asks her to have a 3 month secret affair. But he has a hard time not wanting to be near her now that it is open season on their mutual attraction. He hopes 3 months will be enough to convince her. Wow, their first kiss is so hot and his growling so delish!

This was a first read by this author and it was nicely written and hot.

I really enjoyed this book. The story pulled at my heart. Pilar took on raising her brother after her parents died. She worked hard as Benedict's assistant. Throughout the years she has felt like his charity case. He helped with the funeral, and arrangements after her parents died. He gave her a job so she could support her brother. He is HOT, but the two kept everything professional. Her little brother is about to graduate, and she wants to move away and do something on her own. When she turns in her 3 month notice she is shocked that her boss has wanted something more for a very long time. He just wouldn't cross the line's as long as they were working together. Now that she is leaving he talks her into a 3 month affair.
Pilar has saved for years so her brother could go to college. The fights or should I say augments that went on between brother and sister felt real, you could feel the tension. She wanted the best for her brother. What she wanted, and what he wanted was very different. Not everyone goes to college. It doesn't mean that can't be successful. Pilar had to learn to accept her brother for who he was. This really was a excellent book. Pilar thought she failed her brother, but she didn't. All teenagers goes though a phase. This is one of those books that pulls at your heart. I loved the ending!

Meh. Just read the title and you know exactly what is going to happen between the 2 characters. Completely predictable which is not necessarily a bad thing. However, there were a number of plot points that made no sense to me. She worked closely with him for 5 years, on the family ranch WHERE SHE ALSO LIVED, and didn't know that he lived in the pool-house? And she's so quiet & shy around him until he expresses interest & suddenly she turns into this sexually assertive woman. There was no chemistry between them that I could discern. I have no idea why he had been "in love" with her for years. And the title?! C'mon - this is a title from a 1970's Harlequin Romance. Blechh.

This was only ok. I'm trying to clear out my TBR Mountain and found this. I can see exactly what drew me to it, considering boss-assistant trope is a fave, add a dash of billionaire and a Latinx heroine, and I was hopeful that it would be the start of something good. I have to give props for the representation, which I truly think was done well. My main issue was the fact that there's not alot of setup for this romance and I didn't connect with either of the leads. Their chemistry wasn't compelling and I felt like I was missing scenes that really established their history with each other, not just individually. It may also be due to the first person perspective, since I really wanted more from Benedict, especially since he's the strong, silent type. For a cowboy romance, there's not alot of time spent on the ranch, so if that's a draw, it's not really to be found here. It endd on a bit of a teaser for the next couple in the series, but I don't think I'll be in a rush to read it.

My first Genevieve Turner but definitely not my last (or even my last today). I was thoroughly hooked by the sex pact between Benedict, a billlionaire ranch-resort cowboy, and his executive assistant, Pilar. She’s been working for him 5 years, since the sudden death of her parents left her as guardian to her younger brother, Javier. Now Javier is 18 and she’s determined to go back to school to finish her accountancy qualification. But when she hands in her three months notice she gets more than she bargained for - the offer of a short term affair.

The first two thirds of the book worked exceptionally well for me. Pilar’s voice was engaging and smart, and Benedict was very beguiling; it had lots of nice touches and some steamy scenes. Unfortunately the ending didn’t land quite as well, for a number of reasons, some of them to do with Benedict’s behaviour and others with a story line that deals with racial profiling that wasn’t well handled.

What is it about Genevieve Turner’s books that work so well for me? It’s like she’s speaking directly to my id. Benedict has been secretly pining for Pilar for years, biding his time until she’s no longer his secretary or her brother Javier (she’s his guardian) goes off to college. That all changes when Pilar hands in her notice and the timeline moves up. Benedict’s buttoned up, repressed attraction energy was so utterly delicious! They’ve been working together for 5 years but Pilar didn’t really notice him that way until this past year and then it was hard for her to un-notice and remain professional.

I thought this did a great job handling the power dynamics. On a bigger scale, I’ve been curious about how the Merrill family handles their power, from reading the Always a Cowboy series. We never get Benedict’s POV so I still have some questions but I liked how this engaged with it, especially with how he always has to be on when he's around town and how aware Pilar was of her circumstances and dependence on the family’s benevolence, from her past college scholarship to getting the admin job.

Benedict took amazing care of Pilar. Whether fixing her sink or buying her a pair of jeans on the off chance that she’d want to go horseback riding, he looked out for her. I really loved all those details. Why yes, I would like to order up a Benedict for myself. Even though they decide to embark on an affair until she leaves town, it builds slowly and to great effect. Benedict can do a lot without even touching Pilar! He is an A+ dirty talker. The chemistry was incendiary.

Despite their differences, they both feel similarly about being responsible for the people they love, particularly their younger brothers who give them trouble. They both have a tendency toward enabling or carrying more of a burden than they should and it was interesting to see how these conversations evolved as their respective situations unfolded. There are some key differences, however, and this where the story went a bit awry for me. Benedict’s brother Josh is in prison for a DUI. (Pilar’s parents was killed by a drunk driver and she has some anxiety around driving as a result.) The family initially covered up Josh’s behavior but he almost died and killed someone in the last incident. Benedict wished he’d stopped enabling years earlier and he puts some of this onto Pilar. However, Javier is a senior in high school. He’s a typical teen and Pilar doesn’t put her foot down as much as she should. The situations are completely different and of course it all came to a head

As a result, the ending felt rushed. Benedict needed to do a lot more groveling and show that he’d learned from how he mishandled things. But up to that point, I absolutely loved the story. Even though the ending didn’t quite stick the landing, I loved these characters. I’m glad they’re figuring out a way for Pilar to go off and do what she needs to get her CPA certification and still make a relationship work.

Character notes: Pilar is a 26 year old fat Mexican American secretary. Benedict is a white CEO of a cattle ranch-turned-hotel and resort and stock horse operation. This is set in Cabrillo, CA.

Content notes: past death of parents (killed by drunk driver), FMC became guardian of 13 year old brother (now 18), brother unfairly arrested for shoplifting due to racial profiling, past car accident (her car was totaled but she was fine), some anxiety around driving, internalized fatshaming, MMC’s brother is in prison for DUI, on-page sex, MMC’s father retired early due to heart problems but okay now, classism, family planning conversation, alcohol, gender essentialism, ableist language

Ever since I found out Benedict had a book, I knew I immediately wanted to read it especially after the tease in his cousin Penny’s novella teased that he was in love with his secretary/assistant, Pilar. I even think it stated that Pilar quit in that novella and that Benedict was none to happy about. Understatement of the year because he was beyond not happy about as revealed in this story. So, I was very intrigued for multiple different reasons just with that tease alone.

This story began exactly what was teased where Pilar after having worked and been in love with Benedict for the last five years decided to quit because she knew she would never move on if she didn’t leave him. The only catch was that she had to wait three more months until her brother graduated from high school before she could move and leave Benedict behind.

As I stated above he was none to happy about it, I immediately could tell that he was already in love with Pilar with Pilar having no idea of that fact. It was just how he reacted in not the cool, calm way he was known for. He very much gave off the impression that he was going to do anything in his power to convince her to stay and be with him.

What I liked though was that even though neither one knew the feelings of the other, they both had these unrequited feelings for one another. They both refused to breach that gap due to fear of rejection and hurt. So, even though they had an established friendship/work relationship and great rapport, there was still this underlying tension between them that gave off very much cat and mouse vibes. They had some great banter going on as well as some suggestive flirty that could be interpreted in an innocent way but also a not so innocent way, which was kind of fun to see as they played the game.

Benedict really put out all the stops to make his intentions known with Pilar. He made his move with heated kiss and caresses and other naughty things that he had been yearning to do to her for years. Years of built up fantasies that he was playing out on the pages. He embraced it. He urged himself closer and closer to her with both words and touch. It just really deepened their relationship on the already established bond that they already had. I thought it was really good. Really sexy. And it was beautiful too with his tender touches and words.

It was very clear even though they had some pretty steamy encounters together, it was done in a way that showed feelings were involved with every encounter they had. He showed her that this was more than just the physical for him. It went beyond that. He wanted her. He wanted that bond and closeness that he had been wanting for so long. It was just simple things that he would do like brush her jaw or gaze into her eyes. It always about him showing that he cared about her and wanted to make her feel good. It just made it so special and intimate. It truly was lovemaking in the purest sense. I loved that so much. It just made me really happy to see those sexy yet very intimate scenes throughout.

There was nice build up between them, even though they did get physical in the story pretty quickly. However they did have five years of angst and anticipation between them, which came across beautifully on the pages. It just made what was happening more intense. It whetted the appetite as it built to their first kiss. It was the perfect amount of build. Not too short and not too long. It was really well done I thought.

There was an interesting storyline with each of their brothers that were similar yet different. It made them being able to relate to one another. Also understand each other. The great thing was understand the mistakes the other made so they didn’t have to repeat that mistake with their respected sibling. Even though it did cause some conflict between them, it also brought them together. What he did in the end for her brothers was very lovely and sweet and just showed how much he cared about her. How considerate he could be with his thoughts only being of taking care of her and eliminating the stress and worries for her. That made me smile and swoon so much. Again it showed what a special relationship they truly had. This was a romance of pure love. That was so good.

The only thing that really bothered me was the amount of times she kept saying that she couldn’t get deeper involved with him aside from physical because she only had three more months left with him. I know she was trying to convince herself not to get more involved with him, but it just made me want to shake her because she was already in love and no amount of her saying that was going to change that. I got tired of hearing that.

Overall, I truly adored this story. It had great balance between the physical and emotional stuff between them, though they were very well interconnected. There was great respect in their relationship. They had a great friendship and working relationship. I loved the flirty banter and the rapport they had between them. The build up between them was really nice. I loved how Benedict went after Pilar with a vengeance after waiting five years, knowing he had no time to waste. He showed her such tenderness and respect with every encounter they had. He really just wanted to take care of her. It was in both a sweet and sexy way. It was just freaking adorable to see him do those things for her to show that he cared. It was amazing. I loved it so much. I loved their relationship/romance. It was just a really great read that I really throughly enjoyed.

I have read three stories by this author, and i have to say that she knew how to get me. She has really impressed me as an author. Her stories were a lot sexier than I thought they were going to be yet they had great heart and intimacy to them that I really enjoyed seeing played out on the page. I really, really appreciated that because she nailed both aspects really well to make a complete and satisfying romance. She just hit all the write spots with her. I really enjoyed her writing and her storylines. It really makes me want to pick up her other books read them.

I highly recommend giving this author try if you love passionate yet very intimate reads and love romance based on connections in every aspect of a romantic relationship. It will just hit you in write way if you give this author a try.

I really enjoyed this book. It was sweet, it was sexy, it was exciting and intriguing. The characters are realistic, the writing is excellent and the cover is amazing. I'm not going to lie. The cover was what attracted me to this book. The plot is also pretty great. In fact, I had forgotten that I requested this book and went looking all over for "the book where the girl falls in love with her sexy boss"(I was so glad when I realized it was on Netgalley). My only problem with this book is that I thought it was too short. Yes, it's an amazing and a quick read but I desperately wanted more! I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys romance. This is a gem of a book.

I am not sure how this book found me - was it the cover? Was it the blurb? Or maybe it was just the idea of a cowboy.

I enjoyed this book. A quick read that kept my attention. Right amount of steam, just enough conflict and a few secondary characters that got me interested.

I would love to read the next book - NOW!

I received this book from the publisher via NetGalley and this is my honest review.

Loved the heroine in this, found the hero inscrutable to the point of frustration at times. And while I totally got his desire to fix the situation at the end, going behind her back to deal with it made me so mad. He's lucky she is a forgiving sort, because I think I would have told him to fuck off.

As ever, though, Gen Turner writes good books.

Pilar is leaving her job of 5 years with her ranch boss, who happens to be a billionaire and in love with her. Benedict doesn't want her to leave - he wants Pilar in his bed. This was an enjoyable read. It didn't drag - it flowed nicely. For me, it was a good read. 4☆

Another new author for me.

This book was cute, a good use of the last 90 minutes, but not as engaging as I had hoped. As an editor, all the errors kept pulling me from the story because I was correcting as I read.

All in all, I didn't hate it.

Her Billionaire Rancher Boss: A Cowboy of her Own Book 1 is by Genevive Turner. It is a good book and a good story. It is the start of a great series.
Pilar Lopez has worked for years for Benedict Merrill. Before that, she had gone to school on a Merrill scholarship, and had worked for them during her college years. Pilar took the job as assistant to Benedict to be able to save money for college for her younger brother Javiar. Their parents had been killed in a car accident and Pilar had raised Javiar. She was worried about him now because he was not staying at home or coming home when he should and had not decided which college to apply to and time was running out. However, as soon as he graduated and decided on his college, Pilar was leaving Benedict Merrill and going back to school and then to find a job all on her own. Not that she didn’t like working for Benedict; but that she liked it a little too much or liked him a little too much. She knew however that he would never look at her like she wanted him to. Now she just has to gather the nerve to hand in her three-month resignation.
Benedict Merrill was astounded when Pilar finally gave him her resignation. He did not want to accept it. If he did accept it, he would never see her again and he definitely wanted to do that. He had been in love with her since she started working for him but would never make a move against an employee without some kind of hint that it would be accepted. Pilar had never indicated she saw him as anything other than an employer. How was he to get her to stay with him?

hmm, this is the third book in a row by this author I have found fairly disappointing; maybe I need to take a break.

I would have loved to see more of the foundation of Benedict and Pilar's relationship, the part where they are friends / boss & employee. instead, because we kind of jumped in in the middle, it felt pretty insta-lust to me. it was like a switch turned in their relationship but we only got to see the "after" part. I was expecting a romance and instead it was more towards erotica that was still trying to have a plot.

the characterizations were not very nuanced either - Benedict is kind of unyielding in all ways. Pilar is obstinate in her ideas about what path her younger brother should take; the younger brother is a teenager (aka, a jerk). Pilar wants to leave her hometown because... pretty unclear why she thinks this is a good idea, and yet she is extremely certain about it. not buying it. and the resolution feels too neat and tidy to be realistic.

A good book based upon a young mexican woman who lost her parents aged 21 and took the responsibility of raising her 13 years old brother who will shortly be around college age.

Benedict has had a thing for Pilar from the moment that she came into his office and asked for a job but has suffered in silence like he always does, but with the possibility of her leaving him he finally makes his move.

Pilar is a very strong woman and they both help each other in ways they didn't know they needed it, they help balance each other out.

Its a sweet read that can pull on your heartstrings as you read and see the pain that they have both endured, but then they find the pleasure of each other and Pilar falls very quickly.

Its a fast read, but an enjoyable one all the same.

Okay book

This book starts out good then goes to annoying. I got tired of reading I'm still leaving in three months. Pilar got furious every time Benedict tried helping her. Raising two daughter's alone in their teenage years I would have loved a good mans help. I also felt cheated with the ending, she was still leaving him to find herself. I felt I waste my time waiting for Pilar to grow up and stop acting like a child.

DNF. This is the first time I've tried this author, not trying again. The heroine is a Latina wannabe with a mind that is 50% mashed potatoes and 50% sex. I'm instantly dumber for reading this book. When you get so many dud books in a row, you really just want to stop trying and go either reread an old favorite with a surefire guarantee or go watch a movies/series whatever. Life is weird how i seem to be falling consistently into dud books these days

Poor storyline

The storyline is poor. The characters two dimensional. Basically, Pilar is Benedict's Secretary and she fancies him like mad. So much so that she hands in her resignation with three months notice. Immediately they begin an affair. In between sex scenes there is a younger brother of Pilar refusing to go to college and family of Benedict's who he professes to care for deeply, but you only get to meet one. Story in a nutshell!

Okay the title alone was almost enough to get me to not even read this! But I thought, it must be a fantasy. C'mon can we stick all the romance cliches together in one hero? It was short and tried to be sweet but there was way too much trashy language and even more steamy descriptions. Some may like that but I am not one of them.

It was a freebie on Amazon so I downloaded it. I did not expect much, but still I found the narrative (and the main character) at times annoying - like repeating over and over 'in tree months I'll be gone' and (not) taking 'Merill's charity' ect.
Do I recommend it? Well if you have a free time and can spare a few hours on it, go for it - no book is a waste.

Too Much

There was too much sex and not enough story. The characters were not fleshed out enough. And it didn't seem like it was the first in a series. It acted like I had missed a story or two before it.
