Charlotte can't catch a break, after seeing her big crush with another woman and finding out her sister is engaged, she doesn't know what else to expect, she just knows that fate never sends good her way. Finally ready to welcome a man into her life, her plans are shattered when she receives a devastating phone call. Returning to Parish Cove wasn't in her plans, seeing her sister with her fiance wasn't in the plan, and everything that followed after, that was fates way of showing her to just stop making plans for good.

Charlotte is one heck of a character, not because she's a drop dead gorgeous girl, but because she's realistic and Jennifer Snyder did a great job of writing her. I have lived the moments Char lived when roommates date, drinking bad beer, and seeing your crush with another girl. Those are all such real moments in any person's life and they were written perfectly. I started this book off with so much hope, because I love a good main character. To top it off, she's dealing with the realistic situation of having an ill mother and a sister she avoids because of her fears. I liked knowing this was something she was going to have to face as a character, that's emotional growth I can get behind. Then you mix in her roommate, the two men she's crushed on since forever, and the natural chaos that comes from life and this book definitely spreads thin. There's a lot going on, some of it great, some of it not great. While somewhat predictable, I think the focus on Charlotte and how she emotionally handled everything, through introspection, venting, and learning was great.

I feel like a total jerk rating this low, because I love books that make me cry, but this one was just overwhelming. How much bad can a girl take? I get that it's the NA cliche to take a girl, a slightly messed up girl, and have her deal with a major crisis to find herself, but this was pure chaos at times. While I loved Charlotte I just couldn't read her life and sympathize with it, because it was over the top. In general, it made me cry a lot, but not the kind of tears that I enjoy recommending to people. Then you mix in the fact that she just cannot seem the get the guy, any guy, and I started to see why she needed so many vent sessions. Talk about hard luck. It was a tough book to go through, by the end I didn't feel like things had actually taken a turn for the positive, even though I do feel Charlotte had grown as a person.

In the end, this wasn't a bad book, it just didn't leave me feeling good or like I had gotten anywhere emotionally. I definitely expected something different, even as I kept reading, but it didn't all turn out as hoped. It's emotional, it's heartbreaking, you definitely won't find love, but it is obvious that Jennifer Snyder is a great writer, especially for making you feel all that and more. I definitely want to read more from Jennifer Snyder, I just won't be wearing mascara!

After reading Jennifer Snyder’s newest novel, Paper Thin, I find myself completely speechless – and in awe. This work is so different than anything she has ever written to date. It is so full of emotion – from happiness to heartache and everything in between. I just can’t even begin to process all the feels that I had while taking this journey with Charlotte. This whole story is just absolutely beautiful and I could totally relate to some of Charlotte's issues on a personal level. As the synopsis states, fate is not Charlotte’s friend and I’m here to tell you – nope, it’s sure not. In this case, fate is a cruel and heartless bitch, but in the end I believe it made Charlotte a stronger person – one that prevailed and learned so much about herself and those around her than she ever thought possible.

Once again, Jennifer Snyder delivered a story that had me hooked from the beginning and reading well into the wee hours of the morning just so I could find out how this amazing and heart wrenching story would end. This is an incredible story of family, friendship and dealing with the unpleasant realities that life throws at you. It’s about picking up the pieces and moving on even if you don’t feel like it. It’s about being pulled in so many different directions and at times putting your life on hold for far more important things – the things in life that really matter. Slight spoiler - this story does not end in the "Happily-Ever-After" most people might desire, but this story touches on real life events that just about anyone can relate to and characters you can really connect with. Paper Thin is an absolutely moving and beautiful story that will stay in my heart for quite some time.

*I was provided a copy by the author via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review

This book was not what I was expecting. I lie. It was not what I was expecting when I requested it from NetGalley but it was what I was expecting after reading a few reviews. This book was sad and everything happened to Charlotte (and her family) but I really enjoyed it. I really liked Charlotte as a character. Yes she had a few problems character wise but she was just a 20 year-old girl who didn’t know what she should do so she’s just ran away from a few things. I really enjoyed her journey even if the end was sad and I wasn’t expecting that (I was expecting to be sad but not in the way it was). Another thing I really liked in this book was Charlotte’s friendship with Dawson. I really enjoyed how they helped each other with their problems and with the things were happening in their life. I could have a few problems with their friendship and with a few things that happened but I kind of understand why they did what did. One thing I really wanted was to see more of her Charlotte’s relationship with her sister before a few things happened. I think there wasn’t time to see how they really were together and I would love to see they interacting a little bit more. The story itself was beautiful and heartbreaking. Yes it was hard to read this book because everything happened at the same time to Charlotte but in the end I really enjoyed it.

Overall, this book was way better than I was expecting and I’m really happy about it. If you’re looking for a happy book this book is not for you but if you want to read something realistic with some character development you should give this one a try because it was beautiful.

What is the theme/trope of the book? getting through life no matter what it throws at you
F/M, M/M, F/F, Menage? m/f

no
Is there a HEA (Happily Ever After)?
no
Are all story lines resolved by the end of the book? yes - ish

What I thought

How would you describe the plot of this book? it was unpredictable
How would you best describes the mood? sad, traumatic, helpless
How would you describe the pace? quick read, you want to get done and know what happened
How would you describe the characters? well developed
How did the book make you feel?
I was frustrated, and sad. I knew this book wouldn't be a walk in the park, but it was hard.
How HOT is HOT?!?
there is none. Sexual tension sure, but no happy endings
Is the book a tearjerker?
I teared up - but didn't CRY --- but I can see it being very emotional for others
Sum it up – what are your overall thoughts on the book and writing? This was a journey. We follow Charlotte through what seems to be a never ending journey of "what more could happen." There are plot twists in the book that rip your heart out. And just when you believe there is nothing else left to take, your gutted. The writing and the detail to the situation are spot on. I felt everything Charlotte felt. I was anxious, full of disappointment, and then crushed just as the characters in the story. But when the pivotal point in the plot came, I was gutted.
Not my cup of tea
Did you have any hang-ups about the book? It is so hard to determine what my problems for the book were. From the blurb you think there will be an HEA, it being in the romance category you would think there is an HEA, but there isn't. NONE. Does that make it a bad book. NO. Does it throw it off the norm of what a romance is...definitely. I wasn't looking for a sad read, I hadn't expected a sad read. So the book threw me, I felt hollow, empty, in need of some chocolate and a pick me up. But that doesn't take away from the fact that it was well written and there were real issues addressed.
I enjoyed the book, but not everyone will. Some instant turn offs other readers may not like. There is no HEA
Aside from the normal “Adult Content, Over 18 readers suggested” Would you put a disclaimer on the book?
no
Are there any triggers that need to be addressed?

NICOLE'S REVIEW
4.5 STARS

This is not your every day happily ever after story. This book has some real depth and a lot of stuff I can relate to. Jennifer didn't hold back with this one and I thought it was amazing.
Charlotte is in school at another town trying to live her life. She sometimes meets guys and hopes it will work out, but they never do. One day she gets a call from her sister Emma that she is getting married. Charlotte reluctantly goes back home to where their mother is suffering from alzheimers. She tries to deal with the fact that her mom's memory is slipping away from her, while also trying to be happy for her sisters engagment.
This book is not what I was expecting, which I loved. I wasn't able to predict what was going to happen, or even how it ended. Some people might be a little pissed at the ending, but I loved it. I will definitely be on the look out for more of Jennifer' books in the future.

AMY C'S REVIEW

Wow! This was my first book by Jennifer and it was fantastic. Gut wrenching and emotional don't even cover all the words to describe this book. It was defiantly soul searching and so enrapturing that I finished it in one sitting. The story line was beautifully done and offered grace and endearment to all of the characters.

Coming back home was tough for Charlotte. She escaped a life that her small boring hometown was offering for the freedom of college life. The chance to be a teenager and finally come into her own. Little did she know that she would be coming back sooner than she expected and have her life change forever. This character was so complicated yet simple. I felt like as I read I was peeling away the onion layers to discover more Charlotte. It was a beautiful journey from start to finish.

The secondary characters played an amazing role in Charlotte's life. The relationship between sister Emma and long time crush Dawson helped Charlotte grow stronger and more independent throughout the book. I believe that even though Charlotte left to find herself , she really truly was able to accomplish that by coming back home.

Is book was a great read for me. It offered a beautiful story about a girl struggling to find herself. As I read through the pages, I was captivated by the strong will and determination she held herself with. The book was beautiful and a wonderful story. I recommend it completely.

This book was depressing and boring and not what I expected. So the low rating is more because this book wasn't for me, rather than it being bad.
Honestly, Charlotte disgusted me as she fantasized about her crippled sister's fiance and almost kissed him twice. Who does that? Ugh. I didn't really care for the book or characters, and while it may have been deep and emotional to some, I was indifferent to it all.

When I started this book I was a bit skeptical as I have never read anything by this author before yet for some reason I get her emails...Her email said this book was free for a limited time on Amazon and that was 6/5/2017 so I have reason to believe its still free and if you want it, go get it! It's worth it :)

So I had read an excerpt from this book in the emails I had received months earlier and I thought going into it that I was reading a love story as most of the emails I get from authors are all new adult, sexy romantic stuff. Although I am putting this into my romance folder because its kind of there at points, its not a fun, sexy good time. This is a cry your heart out kind of book and I did exactly that while reading it which took me off guard as I didn't realize how attached I was to the characters.

So this book is about a girl named Charlotte who is from the town Parish Cove but is away at college while her older sister Emma has stayed at home to take care of their ailing mother. Emma and Charlotte have not stayed as close over the years because Charlotte has a hard time dealing with their mom's sickness and Emma is obviously resentful that she has to do everything. But Charlotte is called home because her sister is getting married and in a small town like Parish Cove, her sister happens to be marrying someone Charlotte used to know quite well. However nothing goes to plan and some unforeseen things happen which I will not ruin for anyone. These things cause Charlotte to feel "paper thin" and "lost". I think to some degree she has always been a bit lost even though she was deemed wild and free, she has been running for years from her feelings.

Because I thought this was a love story, I thought I knew what was going to happen as it seemed obvious that there was major chemistry between Emma's fiance and Charlotte during some scenes in this book even though they never acted on the urges. So I was a bit blindsided by what actually happens and I felt my eyes watering and I actually sobbed while reading it which I got to say is something that rarely happens to me unless I am reading something really, really heavy.

I will say though that I felt like this book was incomplete. Although it says its a standalone, I was glad to see that there is another book to accompany this one because it felt rushed and unfinished. I am glad the author had plans to complete it because its a story that has so much emotion behind it that not showing how the main characters deal with what happened would be unfair to such a moving story. This book was mainly in Charlotte's point of view so it will be interesting to see Dawson's point of view in the second book.

I think this book is worth a read as it deals with some real life changing events and even though its a short read at 257 pages, the author managed to pull real emotion out of me and it made me enjoy the book even more.

Kudos

This is not a nice light hearted love story. We follow Charlotte through a series of life changing tragedy only to see her find her way to something new. There is no HEA, so if that is what you are looking for you won’t find it here, but this is definitely a worthwhile read.

Title: Paper Thin
Author: Jennifer Snyder
Rating: 4/5

Thanks to NetGalley, Jennifer Snyder and Xpresso Book Tours for letting me receive a digital copy of this book.

I requested this book, thinking I had read one of Jennifer Snyder's books before, but I still can't tell. I had zero expectations, I wanted to be open-minded when it came to Paper Thin and so this book totally blew my mind.

Charlotte is a young college student who returns to her hometown, because her sister is set to celebrate her engagement party. A few years ago, Charlotte left town because she wanted to go to college and also couldn't deal with her mother's sickness that started kicking in then. She though that her sister Emma had it all under control. Once she returns to town, she finds herself face-to-face with her long-term crush, Dawson. Old feelings start to grow until some shocking news ruin everything for Charlotte. And just as she makes her way back to college, another dramatic news goes off, changing her whole life.

So much for my retelling of the synopsis. I really adore Jennifer Snyder's writing style. She's all about emotions, which makes it easy to understand the character's motivations. Although I don't agree with the way the story ended (I wonder where all the money comes from?!), I liked the way it developed. Usually, the books about returning to a hometown aren't my thing, so I was surprised to like this one so very much.

At first Paper Thin reminded me of a novel I have written myself, especially because of the Dawson thing. I enjoyed Charlotte and Dawson's scenes a lot! The one in which she watches him take a swim is my favourite. And because I liked him and he seemed like a really sweet boy, I was so sad about the ending. But you'll see for yourself if you decide to read this book (please do, I can only recommend it!).

Then there is Sadie, Charlotte's best friend at college (her name is Sadie, right?). She's the one who catches her when she falls. She comforts her after she returns from home, takes her out to a club and introduces her to a band. Charlotte soon starts feeling a certain attraction toward one of the members, but it doesn't last long. By the end of their concert, both girls walk to their car and that's when Charlotte gets a phone call that changes everything. And also then, Sadie is right by her side, offering to be the friend she needs in that situation.

Charlotte drives back to her hometown, needing to be there for a family. And that's when I started hating her sister, Emma. Alright, I wasn't a big fan of her right from the start, but it only got worse when she started being mean to Charlotte. I can see why she feels that way and is angry at the whole world, doesn't mean I still approve of it. And when she did what she did... I was shocked and disappointed. But it was important for the story, same as the club visit before the shocking phone call, only I didn't understand that at first either.

Honestly, each scene and each chapter is necessary for the story itself. It's like a well-organized puzzle without a missing piece. So even though this review is kind of short compared to other reviews I have written in the past, it's all I can manage right now. I was an emotional wreck for at last two days after I finished Paper Thin, so I suggest you finish it on a Friday or a Saturday morning. That way, you'll have enough time to collect your thoughts and write a review yourself. This book deserves all the support it can get and it's one of my favourite emotional-reads, as well.

A wonderful emotional journey

I don’t think it’s any secret that I adore Jennifer Snyder and her novels. Paper Thin did not disappoint. Jennifer’s writing talent and skill at working with raw emotion shine brightly in this new contemporary novel.

I have been very caught up in Succubus Kiss land…and while I could curl up and live in between Randal’s sheets forever…I needed a change of pace and some contemporary. I really love Jennifer’s Cold Creek series (#TeamCam) and Shattered Soul.

I really had a struggle when I sat down to write this review though. I loathe spoilers. And this plot is so deeply woven that I fear if I try to give even an overview, the whole thing will unravel. I want you all to experience the entire journey and feel the suspense and surprise.

Plot line aside, I really loved the characters. Charlotte is the main story line but her sister Emma and friend Dawson also play pivotal roles in Paper Thin. They all experience the same main journey but their paths are all radically different. It’s a fascinating read because you’re challenged to try to understand all of them and their choices.

This is not a traditional HEA romance. This doesn’t have a pretty ride off into the sunset ending. In fact, a lot of you will get the end and be pissed off. But you know what? That means that Jennifer did her thing.

This is a novel to challenge you. This is a novel to make you reconsider what you think you feel…to challenge yourself to see a viewpoint you haven’t ever considered…to put yourself in the position of having your entire life altered and figuring out how you navigate life again. It will break you down and make you rebuild. That’s what this novel is about.

I had the same experience reading Paper Thin that I did when I read Shattered Soul. I was so mad at Jennifer when I finished Shattered Soul. I’ve told Jennifer this. I cried and once I processed, I was soooooo angry with her. And then I realized she had sent me on this emotional journey that my day to day life would have never created for me. Paper Thin took on the same kind of journey with a much different story line. You have to understand that’s what the whole point is. It’s not to read something fluffy and pretty. It’s to let Jennifer change a little piece of you.

I gave Paper Thin 4.5 stars because I know some of you will hate the ending. I’ve heard it before when I reviewed books like Magnolia Affair by T.A. Foster. It’s nothing new but I adjusted for you. Overall, ending aside, Jennifer’s beautiful writing style shines through in Paper Thin. The plot line was well constructed. The characters were relate-able and you could imagine them transcending into the real world. You get hooked and you want to share their journey with them. Based on all of that, this is a 5 star read all day long.

I hope some of you who live in a very safe romance bubble will take a chance and let Jennifer tug at your heart strings. When you realize how much you like it, go read Cold Creek and let’s chat about some of my favorite book boyfriends

Paper Thin is my first book by Jennifer Snyder. I was really intrigued by the blurb of this one, and I thought that I knew what I was in for. That wasn't the case here at all though, and this wasn't anything like what I had been expecting. Paper Thin was beautifully written, and I think that Jennifer Snyder is definitely talented. That being said though, this story was not for me. I want to warn potential readers here that this is not a traditional HEA or what I would even consider a romance. This story is fiction and deals with some difficult topics and how we handle life's curve balls.

Charlotte Montgomery and Fate are not friends. At every turn, Fate seems to mock her. Every time that she thinks things are about to go her way, she quickly finds that she has been fooled once again. So when her sister informs her that she is engaged and asks her to finally return home, Charlotte is reluctant to go. Curious to see who her sister has found, Charlotte heads home and thinks that Fate may have finally given her something. But Charlotte soon figures out that Fate once again has different plans for her.

I really felt for Charlotte here. She didn't always make choices that I agreed with, and she did have her moments that frustrated me. But I felt like she was always getting such a raw deal. She wasn't a bad person and yet she seemed to have such terrible karma. At the beginning of this book, I really thought that things were finally turning around for her only for her to be slapped in the face. I hated how things went, and even though the situation was very complicated, I was really hoping that things would finally go her way. This book was really about Charlotte dealing with tragedy and difficult things in life, and I really think that she grew as a person. But that wasn't the story I was expecting here, and unfortunately this entire book was a bit of a downer for me. It was tough to get through parts of this story, and I just didn't want to even finish it at times knowing that it wasn't going to end how I had hoped.

Overall, this wasn't a bad book but I think I went into it expecting something completely different and that changed the entire experience for me. I think if I had known this was more of a journey to self discovery and growth/healing that I would have been better off. But I was expecting this to be a romance at the heart of it, and that wasn't the case at all. One thing that is for certain though is that this one was emotional and heartbreaking at times, and I would warn readers to make sure they have tissues on hand before reading this one. Jennifer Snyder is a great writer, and I am sure that I will read more from her in the future. I will prepare myself ahead of time that her stories aren't always traditional HEAs though before starting, and I think that is something that will definitely change my mindset about what I am reading.

It's hard to know what I can say in this review without revealing too much of the story. I'll start with characterization and work my way from there.

At first, I have to admit I didn't immediately connect with Charlotte. She seemed kind of desperate and a little selfish at first. It didn't take long though for me to discover that she was fairly self-aware, and when a character who has some glaring flaws can understand herself and know what her own faults are, it really helps to redeem them as a character for me. More on that later.

The other characters in the story are her mom, who has Alzeimers, her sister who is getting married, and the fiance. Twist of fate indeed. At first, as I said, Charlotte comes across in a negative way to me because she works so hard to avoid having anything to do with the care of her mother, leaving it all to her older sister. With time, though, I began to see her in a new light. She's hurt by the effects that the disease has on her mother, and has a hard time seeing a mother who doesn't always remember her. Not everyone can handle that in the same way. Then there's the matter of her sister's fiance. All I can say about that is that fate can be cruel indeed. At that point, I really started to sympathize with Charlotte.

Then the author took things to an entirely new level and I was shocked by the turn of events in this story. Then toward the end of the story, she shocked me again! I could believe some of the things that happened so unexpectedly in this story, and through it all, Charlotte's character grew, changed, grew strength and impressed me.

This was not your typical New Adult contemporary. There's a bit of romance, but it was not really a factor for me. The most important part of the story was Charlotte, the issues going on around her, and the growth she experiences as a result. It was a journey of self-discovery, and a heartbreaking one.

The author did a really good job handling some very sensitive subjects in this story. The writing was very good, engaging, and the entire story left me with a poignantly sad but hopeful feeling. It wasn't at all what I was expecting, but I'm definitely glad that I read it.

Paper Thin deals not only with romantic feelings toward someone you shouldn't, but facing life head on after tragedy.

I liked Charlotte.  Her reasoning for some things is questionable to me sometimes, but she felt very real.  She struggled with emotions that I think most people do at some point in their lives.  She tries her hardest to tamp down those feelings and be happy for her sister.  Charlotte begins to know tragedy better than she'd like and has to adjust to everything that is going on.  I know I'm being vague, but I don't want to spoil anything.

One of my favorite elements about this book is that while Charlotte has to figure out her romantic emotions, there is a strong focus on her relationship with her sister, Emma.  There are a lot of changes that force them to be closer together more than they had, and Charlotte has to to face a few things when it comes to her sister.

Another thing that's important is that just because you aren't the one directly involved, that doesn't mean the strain of taking care of things doesn't take a toll on you. You are allowed to feel, and have, not really bad feelings, but frustration.

Paper Thin is a quick read and one I think many will enjoy.

Copy gifted by the author in exchange for an honest review.

This book was one hella of an emotional journey. I cried, I sobbed and cursed. A lot. I was so angry at Jennifer that she made me feel so many emotions. I was like: WHY? My heart was breaking, shattering.

It was my first contemporary story by Jennifer and I have to say that her writing is as amazing as the one in her paranormal books. With descriptions so deep that will make you cry even though you are not an easy crier.

To be honest I have no idea how to write this review without spoilers. The story is really deep, emotional. The journey main character is going through is making you simply feel.

Charlotte is coming back home, even though she was trying to avoid it for a very long time. Sometimes she seems like a really selfish person but as the story progress you are able to see more and more of her real self. And she is beautiful. She has a beautiful personality but she is a bit scared of letting herself simply be her.

Her relationship with her sister is different. They don't hate each other but are not particularly close also. But either way they both learn so much from each other.

I would like to say so much more but Spoilers! And I hate them! You will have to go and read the book by yourself to find out what happened to Charlotte and how all the people she met during that stay changed her and helped her the decision she made.

This book is beautifully written and deserves all 5 heavenly stars from me! <3

4 stars all the way. -FMR Book Grind

Read as an ARC from NetGalley.

I haven't delved into the world of YA for quite some time. I already knew this wouldn’t be the typical YA novel and that proved to be true. There was no Twilight style great loves, or fire from youthful passions. *Insert Flashbacks here*

Charlotte is a twenty something year old college student from Parish Cove. The consumate “little sister”, she’s been the one able to move away from her small town to experience college and the larger world. Never lucky in love, she gets word that her sister is engaged. This forces Charlotte to go back home and face a difficult family situation that she has left behind, as well as find out who’s the mystery man her sister is engaged to. What seems to start out as a story about unrequited love and love triangles, turns into a story about dealing with tragedy and loss.

Charlotte’s character was annoying at times, and I had to remind myself that yes, this is a YA novel, and she is in her very early twenties. I don’t know that I was any less annoying and self-absorbed when I was her age. At a time in her life when she should only have to worry about college and a bright future she’s faced with family tragedy and hardship. The story is wound around Charlotte’s love for her family, along with the dreams that she has in life and love. Not a YA romance, but an emotional ride in a young woman’s life when fate is dealing some heavy cards.

"I heard someone say once that you can't start the next chapter of your life if you keep rereading the last one."

Paper Thin is book one in the Paper Thin series and is also the first book I have read by Author Jennifer Snyder. It is an NA novel that spoke of love and loss. Told in first person point of view, it initially started as a somewhat low-key book introducing the pivotal main and side characters that would shape and reshape the story. Charlotte, Emma, and Dawson, each greatly contributed love, laughter, joy, and sadness as this story took various twists and turns, leaving us wondering how things would ever be good again. I look forward to the next book in this series.

"I was setting out to write a new chapter in my life. That didn't mean I was erasing the previous ones. I was only adding to my story."

THIS BOOK WAS SO AMAZING!!
I cried my eyes out so if you're in a mood for crying and being depressed this is THE BOOK you should read..
I'm kind of glad that this wasn't some boy meet girl story.
Charlotte has the baddest luck of all. Every single guy she had a crush on slipped right through her fingers.
Emma had the kindest heart and when tragedy strikes she just can't handle it and Charlotte sees a side of her sister she never saw.
This story is about love, family, holding on, grief, loss and finding redemption.

This was a good book. I enjoyed the characters however there is a lot of angst in this book. Emotions are constantly running high and I did have to put down the kindle a time or two because i was getting completely hooked and i was going crazy hoping that this book would have a happily ever after even if it was not the ending i would have expected. I look forward to future books by Jennifer Snyder.

I really liked this book. It showed the human side of Charlotte, who was not perfect and didn't have the perfect life. I felt She was much easier to relate to because she made mistakes and didn't always do what I expected she would. I cried several times and wasn't expecting some of the things that happened, which is always a good thing in my opinion. There is no happily ever after but with this story the ending fit just right. This is definitely a story I could re read over again.
