Bearing The Monster's Baby: The Complete Edition Parts 1-5

Rate this book
This box set is a complete collection of the Bearing The Monster's Baby series and contains parts 1-5. Psychology major student Margery Adams has always had an attraction to danger. Love hurts and sometimes the most passionate relationships in life are also the deadliest. But nothing she knows about herself or human nature can prepare her for Martin Valmont, a bad seed college dropout with a mysterious past and an inhumanly vicious temper. Everybody warns her against getting involved with Martin, but Margery can’t help her attraction. There is something truly evil, truly monstrous about Martin—from his unnaturally seductive voice to his aggressive flirting, to his strange behavior when he sees a half moon. Her strange relationship with Martin is incendiary and grows increasingly dangerous as she dares to love the most notorious man in town. The only thing scarier than Martin’s temper is his vulnerability. And the only thing deadlier than his wrath is his uncontrollable passion. This series contains unrestrained sex, adult language and dangerous situations. For adult readers only.

The author gave this book to me in exchange for an honest review.

Margery is a college student who stumbles upon an arrogant loner on campus who is so rude to her that naturally she starts stalking him and wanting him. I’m all for the bad boys… but Valmont is such an arse in the beginning that I didn’t like him and was so confused as to how the author could think anyone would.

Margery’s dialogue at first comes off juvenile and the interaction between her and Valmont is odd. While I found myself liking the idea of the story, the execution of the story I was lacking. Besides some editing issues, I found myself thinking the author took for granted we knew what she was thinking or where she was going, so instead of stopping to show us the path – she just let us blindly follow. I found myself reading and rereading paragraphs trying to piece together what I had missed, only finding I missed nothing – and was justifiably confused.

While this book is a series of 5 short stories combined, the totality still feels small and short. The 5 total read like a normal one story novella. I didn’t understand Valmont’s relationship with the school and the teacher or why it was introduced. I didn’t understand his relationship with his family, his uncle or his cousin – or why that was introduced.

The sex scenes are graphic, but lacked the detail and storytelling that make them real or hot. I felt like the author was more interested in shocking the reader than titillating the reader.

I’m not a professional editor or reviewer, obviously, but I am a professional reader. My advice to the author would be to use more detail in her writing, show us ALL of what you are thinking, not just bits and pieces and hope we can put them together. Get more readers to edit your work, honestly, and let you know where the holes are. Your ideas are good – you just need to develop them a whole lot more.

More horror-erotica and less urban fantasy than my usual reads. This tale loses our sympathy from the outset for a young woman at college who tells us she continually falls for bad guys - as in married, jerks, those seeing other girls and those just looking for sex. But later in the book she adds that she loves sex, with herself or any male pal free on a Friday night. So this is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Have no standards and you can't expect to attract men with standards.

Especially when our miserable, weepy loner - her name is Margery, but it's hardly ever mentioned, though the name of Martin crops up often - spots a weird guy hanging around the college - he's been expelled for violence - and decides that he's just her type. Excuse me? She doesn't know what Martin does for a living (nothing as it turns out) or what his interests are (none we are told of beyond himself).

These people don't have any relationship beyond sex (in the library, the park or a garage floor) during which Martin reveals himself as a well endowed werewolf with the dog-mating drawback. But Margery seems to like it. We do end up admiring her stubbornness. As the title indicates, our girl who sleeps around with every jerk on campus doesn't take precautions, so she's clearly not the brightest (and probably has several diseases). A baby - of some sort - is on the way. Pain, blood and more sex are required.

If the adult erotic fantasy story line is what you are looking for, it's going to interest you, and the complexities of this brand of werewolf are tumbled in towards the end. I'm classing it as new adult because of the college setting; and we don't get to see beautiful wolves running through dreaming forests, the monstrous character is to the fore. Atmospheric, yes, scary, sometimes more of a horror than I prefer. Other readers who like horror may enjoy it more.

This book is meant for 18+ there are some very descriptive sex scenes within this story.
I love anything paranormal and you throw some sex into it has to be a good story right? Well for me I was not truly digging this story being told. Margery is a college student and she always falls for the bad boys I mean who wouldn't right? Then one day while crying and being upset she meets Martin he is rude and doesn't care. This starts the obsession of Margery stalking Martin. There is something going on with him and no matter how many time he pushes Margery away she just won't leave him alone. So what does he do? He gives it to her and lets just say I felt hurt down yonder after reading how big his thing was and it kept growing. How in the hell she could take it is beyond me. When Margery sees what Martin is she willing accepts him, but of course she truly has no choice as she is carrying a monster inside of her. Will she be able to safely deliver this baby or will she die?
Margery was an okay character I didn't really connect with her on any level , Martin he is a butt from the beginning though he does seem to become a bit sweeter with Margery being pregnant with his child. So that won him some points on liking him.
Now I see the author has a good way of storytelling but the sex scenes didn't feel real to me I felt the author was over doing it at times. The way Martin and Margery acted didn't seem normal it just felt rushed I guess you would say.
There was a part within the story where Margery mentioned that students on campus were wondering about her and Martin and how he was a vampire or a werewolf how did they come to this conclusion?
There is a scene where there is a blindfold involved and she takes it off to see everything around her, well then a few pages later the blindfold is being taken off again how does this happen?
Last but not least the baby, it is mentioned that his head spins 360 degrees wait so we are now dealing with the exorcist? When I saw this mentioned I just kept thinking demon child.
I think the author should for sure go back over the sex scenes and make them seem realistic in my opinion. Make us feel what these two sex addicts are doing not just reading what they are doing if that makes sense.
As I sit here with this review I am torn between 2 stars and 3 so I am just going to go ahead and give it a 2 based on the goodreads rating of "its ok."

Note: These are my personal opinions.

The likes and dislikes:
~The title gave a lot away and that is quite sad, as you expect what will happen and have little if any surprise left.
~I was surprised how much I liked Thornton's writing style...initially, but with that said, I wished the story strictly stuck with one perspective. The mix of the first and second was okay, as it fits Margery's 'not-all-there' mindset, but later a third person perspective came in and left me a little frustrated.
~The reason for Margery's obsession in the beginning didn't really work for me and the extent there of was a little psychotic, but she luckily realised it herself.
~Martin's explanation of how and why he does certain things at the tree...that was hot and it truly was the essence of why we want people who are bad for us in a 'good' way.
~Some parts are stated with honesty so real, I was enjoying the hell out of it.
~The quick pace felt great with the genre, though I would have liked more detail on some things, but it still worked.
~The steamy scenes are hot as hell!!! They are raw and sensual, even from the first one there is a quite unique flare.
~I loved that the transformations were so beautifully described and that it went with the classic horror werewolf.
~I found it hilarious how in all that happens, Martin claims the strange part is Margery needing to be tied up...seriously, tie me up any day, instead of the rest!
~The dialogue was very much just oral exchanges, making it difficult to keep track at times of who the speaker was, as little reference to the speakers and their actions were given.

Notes on characters:
Margery - Took some warming up to, but I loved her wit. Even though she is as mad as The Hatter, she is strong, says it as it is and doesn't back down...ever!
Martin - He is hot, but the way they met...
Angel - I loved her the most, she had the best lines.

If I'm completely honest...this is a little weird, well very. I loved it until halfway through where it began being too odd, but then luckily it kept me interested due to the steamy scenes. I would definitely read more of Thornton's work as she has great potential.

NICE GUYS ARE BORING!!!!!!!

I was given this series from the author for an honest review.. Raising all daughters, I'd give this young author 10 stars for following her passion.
The series is very creative. Margery bumps into Martin Valmont while vomiting about how guys are butt heads. Martin pretty much says , nobody cares about your pitiful life so stop speaking and move out of the way. Martins rudeness really turns her on. Everyone tells her to stay away from him. So Margery wants him even more and becomes quite the stalker. Martin is and extremely angry guy and doesn't want anyone to get close to him. But Margery wants all of his bad boy body and soul. ( Quote )
Let me feel you Valmont. Let me feel your hurt. Let me swallow your rage. Let me inside you and let the hate incinerate me. I truly enjoyed the creatively of this story. The one thing that could improve which im positive this author will evolve into an AWESOME writer. The sex scenes almost had the same dialogue just different places. Some of Margerys crude talk, like stuff dripping all over the edge of the counter, or shook and squirted . Those visuals just ,,,weren't good. I guess having the female character talk crudely about her women parts is something you don't read often. I would of liked to hear Martin's POV more,,, especially during those scenes. More animalistic, hot coming from him and her. I would imagine the sex is the hardest to write for an author. I loved the surprise ending of this series. I'll be looking out for this author. I love watching new independent authors evolve. Good luck.

I received a copy of “Bearing The Monster's Baby: The Complete Edition Parts 1-5” from the author, Monica Thornton.

“This is why people love a bad guy. Because they care about no one else except the girl they like.” At least, that’s Margery’s opinion and why she finds herself attracted to the baddest boy of them all, Martin Valmont.

The story is told from the first person (Margery’s point of view) and I find her disimpassioned viewpoint to be difficult at times. But it fits the story. And as other reviewers have pointed out, Margery is crude. But again, it fits her character to think and speak the way she does.

And I did get a kick out of the reverse racism (er, speciesism). Well-done there.

What this story isn’t: If you’re looking for a happy go-lucky modern romance where everything is just ducky, then this isn’t the story for you. These are troubled (complex) characters who thrive on being in the thick of things.

As Margery says, “I could never explain my attraction to Martin Valmont. I rationalized that I must be attracted to danger, or abuse, or even life-threatening highs and lows. But now looking back, I think that the truth is… I just admire men who are one step above my own genetic gene pool. I always wanted to find someone who was greater than a man, more powerful than just a jock or a billionaire tycoon. I wanted someone who was truly magnificent, truly beautiful, and someone not of this ordinary world.”

So, it does admittedly, have a happy ending with a surprise twist.

The reason I gave this four stars and not all five was do to formatting errors when the digital copy downloaded to my Kindle Fire, there were also many spaces where their shouldn't be and a spelling error on page one. The highlighted area's would not turn off; as I read with a black screen and white font that meant the majority of the book was not viewable unless I changed my setting to the sepia color, thank goodness I was not having migraine issues that day as I cannot handle the sepia or white page views normally.
This book was a definite erotica "series" (although it was so short I am confused as to why it was not all marketed as one book.) and had many sexy parts to it. Very sexy indeed; the main character had some very dark thought processes, as she commonly thinks, she may be disturbed. The story was a good one, the author's humor was very funny and amusing. Hopefully she will continue the series with another part as it leaves you wondering about the characters.
I did receive this book for free via email. I only read books that can hold my attention as I tend to read them very fast, and FYI, I also give my honest opinion. ;) Enjoy the series.

OMG! I have never read anything as BIZARRE as this book. I can't say that it was bad because the plot was pretty great. But I can also not say that I really liked it. A little more connectivity and background would have helped the story to flow smoother and given a little more insight into the paranormal characters. There's action and thrills, murder and mystery and of course a dark, morbid sort of romance.

Would I read another story like this? Maybe. I would have to be in the right state of mind though because I had no idea when I started that it would be so hairy. The opening lines of the first chapter intrigued me so I kept reading and saying. "is this girl out of her mind?" But I guess her logic as the story goes on makes sense. And yes, my mind was REELING when it ended. The fact that I read it straight through proves that it is an attention grabber, so if you like really out of the box, WTF stories, this is the book for you.

Intriguing saga

This is a captivating and attention holding read that leads you to a state of pathos while watching Martin and Margery push through all the overwhelming emotions and situations confronting the two of them throughout this book. I am intrigued by the new spiritual aspects that Ms. Thornton adds to werewolf mythology, and while I acknowledge that those plotlines might not work for everyone they are ok for me. There is such a smooth flow between each part of the story that you almost can't help but to sit and consume the entire thing in one sitting. I'm only glad that I discovered this tale once it was completed because I am sure I would have gone quietly mad waiting for it to be released in installments! All and all, I was fully engaged by this book, and I will be seeking out more of Monica Thornton's work in the future.

Honestly I read this while enduring a mild bout of insomnia. My current read (An American Sickness: How Healthcare Became Big Business and How You Can Take It Back) while informative, was also too depressing for such an occasion, so I literally looked for the most mindless unread book in my digital library.

It delivered.

It was super bizarre.

It promised erotica and horror. I didn't think it was sexy or scary, except in that train-wreck, fascinatingly terrible quality akin to made-for-tv movies and amateur porn. The characters are unlikable and the writing style is atrocious. But I did finish it, because at least it wasn't boring.

i was asked to review this book, however, I messed up and paid for it before it became free. Which was ok. Truly this book reminds me of Richard Layton's writing style. Scary with violence, blood and sex. If those three things are in your wheelhouse, you will love this book. Some descriptions and demonic behavior described in the book can be disturbing, but give the story that terrifying feel. Not for the faint of heart. Well written with complex characters that enjoy pain. Tread lightly, but enjoy if you like that kind of thing.

Bearing the Monster’s Baby: The Complete Edition Parts 1 – 5, by Monica Thornton is a pretty graphic story of one woman’s obsession for forbidden fruit; her love for a vampire, a potentially fatal attraction.
Explicit depictions of physical relations make this series of books unsuitable for readers who like to keep the curtains down and the doors locked, but the author’s treatment of human-nonhuman relations is profound.

Definitely a different kind of shifter

I enjoyed the series, it starts a little strange and i almost put it down, but decided to go a little longer and see if it grabbed my attention. it did, the main characters are a different breed of personalities but well written and after book one you have become invested in there story. Be sure you are into reading about some rough sex before you read this book. If you like wild and different. Enjoy.

Good read

I liked that this book was so different from the types of books I normally read about shape shifters. It had a lot of twist and turns that kept me glad u ed to the page, but I really didn't like the spirit parts that's where the story lost me it was a great story without the demonic stuff. Great writing tho.

Spellbinding

When I began reading this book my reaction was "this really is not my thing " However I stayed with it and began to see a story behind the graphic sex. The author has a great way with words that help you visualize the story and want to read more. Well done and keep writing is what I wish to pass on to Monica Thornton

A very strange tale...

This is a well-written but disturbing story about a girl and her monster lover. It's dark, erotic, and unlike anything I have read before. It's definitely not my kind of story but I have to admit, once I started, I was compelled to finish. I wouldn't exactly call this a romance (by my definition anyway) but it is a very original story.
