No nonsense negotiation guide from a master negotiator
I really enjoyed reading this book, Derek gives some really down to earth advice on negotiation and from the stories this is clearly time proven by the author. One change I've made after reading this book is to negotiate by default on the little things so I'm ready for the important negotiations. Asking "does that come with the usual discount" still feels awkward but I'm going to stick with it. Derek also gives you advice on dirty tactics you need to be aware that people play. I've not seen this spelled out as well in other books. Definitely recommended reading.
Think it's a good overview and basically covers everything that one needs to take into consideration when negotiating. It also.has some practical advice as to how to.approach certain situations.
Very disappointing book. Repetitive at times so the author either didn't proof read it or assumes his audience is not the brightest. Example: "Then he found they salivated just by ringing the bell. There was no need to show or give them food. ... Then, when a bell was rung, even if there was no food available, they salivated."
There are also plenty of statements made which are not backed up properly. At times the author does not bother to back "research shows..." statements up, nor does he provide explanations to some statements. Large parts of the books lack proper explanation as to the WHY. Examples often feel 'forced' and do not fit in fluently.
I expected more of this book. If you have some work experience, you ll not get much out of it. The book is shallow and written in a rush.
