Invoking the best of Salinger’s Holden Caulfield in Catcher in the Rye and Ishmael’s quest in Melville’s Moby Dick, Stone the Moon is the story of Jim Holder, a Midwestern conscientious objector during the Vietnam war who finds himself doing his alternative service in a big city hospital. In his search for himself in a time he is out-of-joint, Holder encounters a myriad of characters and situations that are both humorous and tragic. Jay Edwards’ first novel captures the spirit and mood of the sixties “like few other writers” according to the New York Times Book Review as well as “the most unforgettable characters and protagonist in years” (Chicago Sun-Times). Out of print for nearly a decade, New American Press is proud to bring back to Edwards’ fans, Stone the Moon.
The winner of several honors including twice a semi-finalist for the O.
