Turtle Island #3

On the Rocks

Rate this book
Sassy tomboy Ginger Atkinson would rather be captaining a deep-sea fishing boat than baking pies, yet she still wishes she had a man to bake for. Sure, the pretty redhead is happy running her late father’s Turtle Island ferry business, but everyone in the world is finding love except her. Stuck on the wrong side of thirty, she’s trying to accept singlehood by building a dream home—for one.

In high school, Carter Ridley loved to sneak off with his good friend Ginger to watch the sun rise over the ocean. But after graduation, his path took a different route. One that, unlike Ginger’s, did get him the spouse and house of his dreams. At least, until a scandal shattered everything.

Running from his heartbreak, Carter returns to Turtle Island, where he discovers that Ginger is all grown up. His teenage friend has become the woman he’s always wanted. But will Carter’s pain scare him away from a chance at happiness? Or can he be the loving partner Ginger’s been looking for?

On the Rocks by Kim Law
Turtle Island series #3. Contemporary romance. Can be read as a standalone. Second chance and friends to lovers troupes.
Ginger Atkinson runs the Turtle Island ferry business. She loves the business of running the ferry and captioning a deep-sea fishing boat. But she’s a little lonely in the relationship department since many of her friends on the island have become couples. Why can’t she find someone that will accept her as she is, fishy smell and all?
Carter Ridley has returned to Turtle Island after a scandal ruins his marriage. He and Ginger used to be friends in there school age year, often watching the sunrise together. They meet up again and agree they want friends with benefits status. Carter can’t give anymore than that. But is it enough for Ginger?

The first thing he tells her when they meet again on the island is how bad she smells of fish. That was too funny. The full story is more drama and angst between his heartbreak, having to check on his sister, writer’s block, and Ginger’s wanting more. Good romance in the end.

This was a cute read about the last of the 3 friends on Turtle Island finding her HEA. This is about Ginger and her long time friend, Carter. She crushed on him hard as kids without him knowing and now as he returns to the island, he is a bitter shell of the boy he used to be. Ginger and Carter work together to heal wounds along with a casual fling...but will love find them?

What happens when forever friends lose track of one another? After living on the same island, living next door to one another, going to school with one another, being playmates and classmates, nursed each other through bad dates and lost count of just how many sunrises you’ve seen together, how could that be?
Well, when it came time for Ginger Atkinson and Carter Ridley to go off to college that is exactly what did happen. Ginger had dreams of being a teacher and Carter a famous writer. But things change midway through Ginger’s father has a heart attack and dies forcing her to leave college to be with her mother. Which she totally wanted to do. She also decides she would run her father’s Turtle Island Ferry business which she comes to find out she is good at. Not to mention she had missed the ocean and the outdoors. Now 10 years later she has expanded to other boating experiences ever growing to the business.
Carter on the other hand went to be an engineer like his father and do his writing on the side. During college he meets a gal that reminds him a lot of Ginger (Red) and he fell in love and married the law student. They compromised on Rhodes Island as a place to live since he wanted to live near the ocean and her near the city. He was building his dream home for his bride and she had an apartment in New York for her work. Carter traveled a lot never noticing that they were drifting apart because his father traveled all the time and that just seemed normal. But for his wife it was not if he wasn’t traveling he was working on the house. Now they are divorced and he has a huge writing career of horror books under a pen name, his dream home, and a bitter outlook on life. A few months back when his folks dropped in they found out the truth now they call all the time. Now his sister Julie is pregnant with no baby daddy in site. She has been there since graduation from college. So, his mother had been nagging him to go to their house to check in on her for a while and do some writing there since he has hit a dry spell.
Carter is already pissed about life but now he is super pissed to be his sister’s keeper and she won’t want it. Life was sucking big time. He was off to the home he grew up in. Never expecting to see the one person he was sad to say he hadn’t thought of in years, Ginger his best friend. There she was looking as sexy as hell pointing a can of mace at his face when he answers his parent’s door. “Red?” “Carter?”
It just couldn’t be her old crush was back in town after all these years of no contact was it? Once again she was smelling like fish…I can’t believe this is Red! Has she changed! Damn she still smells like fish…which for some weird reason puts a smile on his face and gives him a sense of comfort. Instead of showing it he gripes about the mace in his face.
Is coming back home good for any of them? Carter’s foul mood and hurt ego is not in the best place, Ginger has lost at love all the way around. Having her best friend and crush home isn’t helping knowing he never saw her at all like a girl. His sister has a daughter on the way with no baby daddy in sight.
Where are they all headed is it any place good for them? Can Ginger and Carter at least be friends again? Will either ever find true love or do they really want it? What causes all the things to fall into place at the end?
I totally enjoyed this story. Being I married my high school sweetheart it gave me that “Aw” feeling pretty much throughout the book. Their bond was set way before they even figured it out. I give this book 5 ++++ stars. Provided by netgalley.com. Follow us at: www.1rad-readerreviews.com.

DNF @ 56%, page 162.. This was a free read and listen so I'm glad I didn't spend money on either one.

I’m not sure about this book. At 52% I was wondering if anything was really going to happen. Carter came home to see about his pregnant sister and sees Ginger after a number of years, after being her best friend when they were little and all the way up to their teens. Now he’s a grumpy and angry man because he’s divorced and Ginger is trying to help him get over his feelings and try to be happy again.

What’s so ridiculous is Ginger trying so hard to find a husband. She’s like man crazy. She’ll ogle any man that comes near her or go out with him then be all depressed when he doesn’t ask her out again because she was seeing him as husband material. I saw nothing remotely interesting about Ginger and her man attitude.

One reviewer on Amazon said this book was “too risqué” but I’m not seeing it. Carter WROTE a sexy scene between him and Ginger but other than that there hasn’t even been a kiss or thought about anything yet, so I was assuming that the second part of the book is going to be all about desire, thoughts and sex. So, I was anxious to see about that.

OK, I won’t see about the sex because I’m done at 56% (page 162.) They kissed and the conversation after that kiss was so teenager-ish. These two are in their 30’s and talked like they were 16. He wanted more and she said no because she had another date in a few days and this could be the one and Carter told her to keep her clothes on. It was too much. I don’t care if they end up together or have sex. They’re too immature for me.

No idea about the sex but the F-bomb was used 14 times.

As to the narration: Natalie Ross is barely ok for me. Her men’s voices are deep but they’re not very good and she only has 2 emotions when she reads: romantic or sad, nothing in-between. She would never be one I would want to listen to again. Sorry.

Vikki’s Musings

I’ve been a fan of Kim Law’s for quite some time now. When I received a request to read this book in exchange for an honest review, I eagerly accepted. I have loved her Turtle Island Novel series, and On the Rocks is an outstanding addition to this amazing series. Since the book description captures the essence of this book, I am not going to do a recap of the story.

On the Rocks grabbed me from the first page, and I could not stop reading this book. The pacing is fantastic, and Ms. Law’s writing style is so smooth and flowing. Her dialogue sparkles and she has just the right amount of narrative as well.

I really loved Ginger’s character. She’s down-to-earth, sassy and smart. She is independent, yet vulnerable at the same time. I loved her dedication to her mother and her friends. While she has a terrible time with dating, she does not let it get her down. Her goals are set, and by gosh, she will fulfill her dreams of love and family!

Carter’s character is a wounded soul when he first arrives on Turtle Island. He’s as grumpy as a bear. He drinks too much, and he’s started smoking cigarettes as a form of rebellion. He’s been the good guy his whole life, and it hasn’t brought him what he longs for. I truly felt his pain and anguish over ex-wife’s betrayal. You might think he is an unappealing character, but he is far from that. He’s a true sweetheart of a guy and really deserves to find his happy ending.

On the Rocks is overall, a light-hearted read, but at the same time, it is an emotionally-charged story with both characters showing their vulnerabilities. It’s a charming friends to lovers story, so the romance develops gradually, allowing me to really get to know both characters. I loved how Ginger and Carter pick up their friendship as if the years had not kept them apart. They can be real with each other. For me, this made On the Rocks a believable romance.

It was great getting a glimpse at the past characters’ lives. The three woman have remained friends even though they now live in different parts of the country. If you’re looking for a book that will have you laughing and crying, a story that will pull at your heart-strings, then you will want to read On the Rocks. I strongly recommend this delightful book. Happy reading!

I received an Arc for an honest review.

Ginger is not a girly girl she is running a bat charter business on the island and is still single, while her friends are all married now. This is a tough time for her and she is trying to make the next step in life.
Carter is divorced after a huge discovery, and he was coerced by his parents to come back to Turtle Island to help his sister. He is not in a good place in his life.

This is a light story about two people who were friends forever and lost touch through the years. Seeing each other again brings back memories of days past. First they have to break through walls and figure out what is best for them selves before they will be able to move on.

I found this book to be emotional for me as it hit home for me in a lot of ways and it was an incredibly awesome book. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

I absolutely fell in love with Carter and Ginger and Turtle Island! I love a book that I can completely immerse myself in and forget everyday life for just a little while, and On the Rocks did just that!

I loved Carter and Ginger’s story. I am a sucker for a good friends to lovers story, and this one has to be one of my favorites. Both Carter and Ginger grew up on the island and were friends growing up. Carter left with dreams of what his life would be. Ginger has made her life on Turtle Island taking over her father’s business after he died. Carter’s life didn’t turn out at all the way he expected it to, and he’s returned home to help his sister and to heal. Ginger’s life is good except she hasn’t found the right man to share it with. As the two reconnect, they may have discovered in each other what they have been missing all along, each other.

On the Rocks had all the ingredients for not only a great romance but a great book overall. I fell in love with both Carter and Ginger. When I first met Carter, he came across as a bitter man fed up with life and people. Oh, his attitude was HORRIBLE, but as I began to see him as the boy Ginger remembered, I felt myself warming up to him and eventually came to love him. I saw that he had a wonderful heart, just damaged by love. And boy, I didn’t know he was hiding the sex god he became in the bedroom. WOW!!! I loved Ginger from the very beginning! There isn’t anything not to love about her. She’s the girl I would want as my best friend. Who can’t love a girl who knows how to handle a boat and can take a group of men out on her boat for fishing expeditions? But, sometimes she sells herself short. I enjoyed seeing the two of them bring out the best in one another and give each other the ability to love and accept themselves and each other.

And to make the book even more perfect was Kim Law’s ability to write with so much description. I could see the town, the beach, and the characters so clearly. Because of that, I was sucked in from the beginning to the very end. I honestly could see this book made into a movie.

This was my first read by Kim Law, but it will not be my last. I plan on going back and reading the first two in the series. Not only did I fall in love with the characters and Turtle Island, I have fallen a little bit in love with you too, Kim Law. You have definitely found a loyal reader in me!

I received an ARC of this book from Netgalley for an honest review.

If you like a book that contains great characters, its heartfelt, childhood friendships, low self esteem & trust issues, its romantic and has plenty of humour - then this is definitely a book for you.

This story revolves around Ginger - she returned home after the death of her father to run his boat business and she loves it. The only downside for her is that she can never seem to find love and she feels inadequate as a woman.

And Carter - he is called back to his childhood home to check on his younger sister who is pregnant and alone and his parents are away travelling and are worried about her and about Carter too. Carter however, is not in a good place and he is very angry with the world after his failed marriage/divorce and does not need to be babysitting his sister and can not wait to leave the island.

So here we have a woman (Ginger) who wants to find love, a woman (Julie) and her brother (Carter) who both want to be alone to get on with their lonely lives and what a story this gives us.

A little background - Ginger and Carter used to be childhood friends, lived next door to each other, they used to tell each other secrets, were always their for one another in times of need and both loved to watch the sunrise. Then time happens and college beckons and childhood friendships are lost and an unknown crush was never found out.

So swing back to now and one evening Ginger returns home to see an unknown car in next doors driveway and the blinds are closed, she gets an uneasy feeling and goes to investigate with her can of mace to see if Julie is ok. Ginger knocks and gets no answer, she then thumps but when the door is opened it wasn't Julie that opened it but Carter her childhood crush.

Both Ginger and Carter have never forgotten about their friendship and it was great to see them learn to trust one another again and with this the story evolves and we find out about the characters pasts and what has molded them into the people they are today and we see how friendships can be re- found and treasured once again. I loved how this story flowed from one part to the next, answering the questions that you have not even asked.

This is a well written Love story and I would definitely recommend it as 'A MUST READ'.

Kim Law continues her Turtle Island series with a story of love and second chances. This third installment, On The Rocks, will let you experience the character’s emotions as if they were your own. Ms. Law did an awesome job bring an equal amount of humor, heartfelt scenes and even added a little more heat than usual.

Ginger and Carter lived next door to each other and they shared a special friendship when they were kids. Unfortunately, they had completely lost touch until eons later finding themselves back in their hometown getting reacquainted with what they once had.

Ginger now owns her father’s fishing boat company, still single, and very much looking for love in all the wrong places. Carter on the other hand is back in town temporarily to help his sister. He’s hoping he gets over his recent divorce and possibly get his writing mojo back. They’re timing sucked before but as fate would have it, they find what they are looking for in each other.

Both Ginger and Carter’s predicament are all so relatable. No matter how big or small, I love how real their issues are. I especially love Ginger Root. Her plain-jane character is as real as it gets. As well as her dreams, ambitions, and even insecurities. Honestly though, I wasn’t sure how Ms. Law was going to put these two together when they are clearly in different phases of their lives. But she did it and did it in good time. The pace was steady and she put enough heat and tension along with good friendship. She made it work and I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it.

If you like books with small town romance with a second chance theme, I would recommend this author. She’s one of my go-to authors and pretty much a sure bet.

This is the third book in this series by Law and while I enjoyed getting to know these characters all over again I did feel like something was missing from this story.

Ginger moved back home to take care of her fathers business after he passed but the problem is that she can't find a decent date. While everyone is falling in love, having weddings and babies she is beginning to feel like something is wrong with her until her old friend Carter returns.

Carter is only supposed to be returning to the island to check on his pregnant sister and clear his head from his failed marriage. He isn't able to write until Ginger comes back into his life. The more time they spend together the more he can see them together but because of what happened before he is scared to take a chance.

I love how Law choose to put Carter and Ginger together even though they are old friends. They slowly start to open up to each other like they used to.

The romance takes awhile but I enjoyed how Carter watches her and it's not in a creepy way. He brings up her self esteem and shows her that he genuinely cares about her.

It was good to see the past characters again just to see what they were up to. Although I only read the first book in this series I do enjoy the island and the closeness between the three friends.

This story of Ginger and Carter's friendship, distance then finally that love connection is my favorite so far. The characters are relatable and easy to root for. I read this in one night because I could not stop reading. I loved it that much. I am recommending it to my Friends and if you read this review I recommend it to you. Did She Still Have To Be Waiting Around?

So at the start of the book, shes desperate from crumbs of attention from the people who forget about her, until they need social validation.

And at the end of the book, she's still just sitting around waiting for a crumb of his attention.

Rejection has consequences.

It isn't "You could hurt me" he actually pissed off and hurt her.

And we have to pretend like its fine because his wife mistreated him.

Feel bad for Ginger HER story was all about him and Lisa.

Its chronic really.

Reminds me of those women who settle for feeling loved in crumbs.

This may be my favorite story of the Turtle Island series! Love Ginger and Carter. Carter has come home to check on his pregnant sister. Ginger loves living on the island even though it wasn’t her original dream. Carter and Ginger grew up together and have a history of watching the sun rise. They are attracted to each other but there are obstacles in their way. I love that Ginger stood up for herself and what she wanted. Love the ending!

I hadn't read the earlier books and sometimes you can feel a little lost at the beginning of book in a series, as characters are glossed over somewhat. This was not the case with this book, each character coming to life under the skilful writing of Kim Law. I enjoyed the story very much and shall look for other books by Law.

I really enjoyed this book, with its cheerful, tomboy heroine and grumpy, secretive author hero. It’s sweet and fun with the right touch of heat, romance and heartache, all wrapped up with some beautiful sunsets and a perfect-sounding house.

Ginger is great. She’s a woman who had all her life plans upended when her father died, but discovered that actually she really loves running the boat business – even if she does end up smelling of fish more days than not. She’s upbeat and friendly, with a few unique quirks – like reading at night without pants on (or shorts/jeans/trousers for the non-Americans like me).

However, she’s also a bit of a traditional romantic and wants the whole perfect husband, kids, house thing, especially now that her best friends have found it and moved away from the island. Even her mother’s found it, leaving Ginger feeling as though something is wrong with her. So she dates, quite a lot, and on every date pretty much changes everything about herself because she thinks she should be girly and flirty and completely not like her normal self. This side of Ginger made me sad, even though I could see why she did it. However, I absolutely loved that one of the main messages of the book was – be yourself. When Ginger is herself she’s far more relaxed and attractive and successful, and I appreciated that.

Carter seems to appreciate it too. When he returns to the island he is not in a happy place. His recent divorce definitely did a number on him and he’s grouchy, depressed and unable to write. He doesn’t want to be on the island and doesn’t plan to stay long. Until he meets up with his childhood best friend, Ginger, again anyway, and things slowly start to change.

I loved their relationship, how it slowly grew out of their remembered childhood into their current problems and deepened from there. They have plenty of chemistry too, of course, but their romance is so much more than attraction. Carter needs help and patience and understanding, all of which Ginger gives without even thinking about it, while for her Carter offers support and acceptance of the person she is, rather than the woman she thinks she needs to be. They’re wonderful together, even if they’re both pretty blind to what’s really going on.

Away from each other this book also has friends and family standing by to offer support and embarrassment as needed, while the hunky builders also provide flirty moments for Ginger and jealous ones for Carter. It’s all fun and enjoyable, with occasional emotional roadblocks. I’ll admit I hated the way Carter left things with his ex-wife , but overall I liked it a lot.

If you’re looking for an easy, enjoyable romance with a good set of characters, some beautiful sunsets and a strong friends to lovers plot, then this certainly delivers.

This story is about two friends: Ginger Atkinson and Carter Ridley. Both grew up on Turtle Island and were the best of friends. They would hang out and watch the sunrises, talk about their days, their dreams and wishes. They would also talk about their futures. As time went on they grew up and went to college in different places. They lost touch.

Today Ginger finds herself back on Turtle Island owning her own business and living with her mother since her dad passed away. She is pretty down on herself due to the problem she is having finding the right man. She dates but they don't work out. Her friends have all found their significant other gotten married and are having kids. That is what Ginger wants, someone to share her life with. She is beginning to think something is wrong with her.

Carter is back on the island after his mom has pestered him to go and check on his younger sister. She is alone at home and pregnant. Carter reluctantly agrees and goes home. Once there he not planning on staying any longer than a few weeks, check on his sister and go back home.
Ginger and Carter meet up at Carter's parents house and Ginger finds him a very different person. True they are older now and time has passed but Carter is drinking, smoking, grumpy and angry. The story will take these two friends through a learning experience of sorts, both finding about what strength they have, who they have become and what they really want out of life. They start to spend a lot of time together and help each other see many things, good and bad. They help each other and hurt each other. But in the end their friendship might be able to win out, and even grow into something more. I don't want to give anything away as I do believe this is a book worth reading on your own and finding out for yourselves. I have read the other Turtle Island books and can honestly say I loved them all. I loved reading about the others on the island and what they have been up in this book. This book has the perfect blend of fun, humor, sexiness and friendship. You won't be disappointed.

I received a free, advance copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for my unbiased review
