Who wouldn't want to try the pirate's life for a day? George decides to become a pirate, so he can find himself some treasure and marry the girl he loves. But he is a good man - can he be a good pirate? Through danger and adventure, with a little bit of help from friends and some practical thinking, he might just make his dream come true.
The story is suitable for all ages (recommended to children from 4-10), and each chapter is followed by some fun thinking questions, which can help children and educators as well. At the end of the book, there are some additional fun activities - riddles, tongue twisters, word games and more.
Storytelling and poetry have always been my passion. Teaching English for over twenty-five years has taught me the value of stories for all age groups.
This profile is mostly written in English and most of the books are in English, because as a teacher-storyteller, I write in English most of the time. However, I am very proud of working with Društvo ,,Naša djeca" and the city library of my little town Dugo Selo, Croatia, and releasing a wonderful project and book Ono čarobno oko nas (The Magic around us).
Stories with a twist of magic, floating on the edge between reality and fantasy, are a special joy for me to read and write. Here's to good stories - may we read them, write them and live them!
I tako nastavljam smišljati, pisati i crtati čarobne priče o običnim ljudima, s ljubavlju i svjesna moći svake riječi koju s nekime podijelimo.
I am a big fan of Anita Kovacevic's work. Now that I am a grandma, I want to load a Kindle with awesome books for my little grandson.
Kovacevic believes that "...what matters most is to get the children to think and feel. .." Her work aims to encourage children to "... think and feel, creatively and critically..." Having grown up in the sixties and seventies, I totally agree with that. Which is why I like this book's story.
George, a harmless small town fisherman want to become a pirate, not because he wants to find a treasure for himself but because he wants to impress Julie, the girl he secretly loves. But, George isn't a very good pirate, in the conventional sense. He did not pack food and water for a long treasure hunting trip and he doesn't really know where he is going. He sails right into a storm, the mast falls and hits him over the head. While he is unconscious George's boat gets stranded in a deserted island.
No spoilers - I am not going to reveal of George will find a treasure. Still from the retold content you can already tell that Kovacevic's story isn't going the way typical pirate stories develop.
That allows room for discussing the story. E.g. George is ill-prepared because he is a fisherman. Fishermen stray close to land where they catch fish which they return promptly so the fish don't go bad. On the other hand, pirates don't want to stay close to civilized land so they don't get caught. How does fishermen's and pirates' behavior and skill set differ?
The neat thing is, all of Anita Kovacevic's books are written with the busy parent in mind who still wants to spend quality time with their children. Kovacevic's deliver "the whole package": (1) story, (2) cute, colorful illustrations "made for children", AND (3) the discussion topics.
e.g. (quotes from the book) "Who is a pirate? What does a pirate need to be a pirate? "Can a pirate be good? Would you like to be a pirate or a fisherman?" Highly recommended! It's the perfect deal for the engaged (but busy) parent.
5***** for George the Good Pirate, Gisela Hausmann, author & blogger
A wonderful story about a man who wants to be a pirate and find buried treasure for the woman he loves. The questions at the end of each chapter and word games at the end of the book are perfect teaching tools for teachers and parents alike. A nice, short read for young children.
