Dissent

Rate this book
* While a stand-alone, this book should be read after "For A Good Time, Call..." *

I lost my virginity when I was twenty-five years old
to a hooker my sister hired because she felt
bad for me. That was six years ago and it's probably
the least shocking fact about my life.

That is, until I met Darcy Monroe, and
"shocking" took on a whole new meaning...

--

Six years after escaping his cloistered, abusive, fundamentally religious upbringing, ISAIAH finds himself still dealing with the demons of his past, detached from society as a whole, and wholly unable to connect with, or trust, women. He engages in constant, meaningless sport sex with women, trying to numb the feeling of inadequacy inside.
Then he sets his sights on his new neighbor...

DARCY is strong, capable, outspoken, and in no way going to put up with some random jackass next door who decides to make a game of trying to get her into bed.

But Isaiah is relentless. And Darcy finds herself torn between not letting him win, and giving into her own desire.

Just as they start to get close, they realize that something more sinister is afoot and they will both be forced to confront feelings of betrayal that will set their lives in an unexpected direction.

This is the story of Isaiah

Raised in an abusive and religious home until the age of 25, Isaiah finally emerged into the real world, for the first time experiencing modern society. Helped by his sister, Fiona (For A Good Time, Call...), who provided him with a hooker for practice, he learned all the ways life he had missed out on in the woods.

That was six years ago...

And Isaiah has demons. Finding himself detached from society as a whole and wholly unable to connect with or trust women, he engages in meaningless sport sex, trying to numb the feeling of inadequacy inside.

-- QUE the new neighbor --

Darcy is strong, capable, outspoken, badass, and in no way going to put up with some random jackass next door who decides to make a game of trying to get her into bed.

But Isaiah is relentless...

And they find themselves constantly thrown together. And, well, Darcy is suddenly starting to feel like...

But something more sinister is afoot...

Leaving both Isaiah and Darcy feeling betrayed and completely unprepared for the way their lives are going to change...

After dealing with the whirlwind of emotions I got from reading For a Good Time, Call... and learning what I could about Fiona and her background, I needed to know what happened to her big brother, Isaiah. I had to know how well (or not) he was assimilating to society. How would he learn to navigate and develop his own sense of mores and values? When he found a woman to care about, would he know what to do? And I wanted to see how he fit with Fiona's new family.

This novel kind of game me some answers. Kinda.

I tried and I tried and I tried and I tried
To make them understand
I tried and I tried and I tried and I tried
But they just can't understand

- Culture, from the One Stone album
https://youtu.be/Kgb_GJ1ovNU

I tried to connect. I did. But what I got didn't really work for me. I get that Isaiah had a lot of catching up to do when it came to sex. The fact that he was a total manwhore didn't even bother me. What did bother me, despite kinda understanding his issues, was the fact that he continued his ways after pursuing the heroine, Darcy. And what the heck was it about Darcy anyway? Her freely sharing her body with everyone did not work for me. At all. How can I possibly take you seriously when you allow anyone to touch you? All in the name of being treated equal? I get that she was supposed to be this huge metal goddess, but I wasn't feeling it.

I didn't like Darcy. I thought things would change, but they didn't. My feelings for her remained the same. I found some sympathy for her after what happened, as the story was leading up to a horrific climax, but I still didn't like her.

I actually wanted to be around her. Not because I wanted to bed her, though I still did. Not because she was some challenge. But because I just liked being near her. She was interesting. She was funny and sweet and dark and creepy. She was the most unusual person I had ever come across and I wanted to know more. I wanted, suddenly, to know everything. Which was new for me. I had never been good with people.

For the most part, I enjoyed this story. It was more a testament to the author's writing than to the characters themselves, especially Darcy. I really wish there was more to Isaiah's story and that there were glimpses of him with the Mallicks. I was far more interested in his growing relationship with his sister than the romance he was supposed to have.

This is a second read cuz I never reviewed it the first time. I liked this a lot, but it's definitely not for everyone.

SG Ladies: don't read this. It's not pretty, you'll hate the H, possibly even the h...and I don't think either character acted out of character.

The H has a problem with giving a shit about women's feelings because of his severe religious background and the physical abuse he sustained growing up. When he finally gets free of it, he has trouble making connections in general with others and finds women too vapid for the most part to worry about making any connection to them...other than through sexual gratification. He's actually very likable in that first 15%. He's emotionally unavailable and a positive asshole. Possibly outdoing Christian Grey...much better actually, but instead of just BDSMing it up with one submissive at a time, the H fucks everything that moves with absolutely no connection to the act and the person.

What happens between him and OW in front of or with in the h's knowing is a testament to his inability to "get" women. Especially while on the h's rock tour. Through the "bunk condoms" that are given out we have to assume he's fucked 7 women before he gets with the h...but that's all off page and not confirmed. He does make a bet with the h that he can get a chick to give him anal that night (which he wins and she witnesses the public fucking)...while it can make his singular interest in the h hard to believe, if you honestly consider his character's experience to date the behavior is definitely within bounds. He's still trying to figure out what he wants from the h and isn't sure yet that it's more than just getting into her pants. His emotions/personality/maturity are all stunted. I think it's actually more writer craft than plot that makes you feel the veracity of that.

Darcy is a bit jaded sexually. She's been slutty/smutty throughout her youth because she's a metal rockstar...including tons of public drunken nakedness and multiple partners. While she's been celibate for a couple of months, she still swam nude knowing the H could see her and then sat fully naked in a chaise lounge while talking to the H. An hour later she's wearing a tight cut out dress and gets catty in her POV headspace when he notices. She thinks: "Why is it always about sex with men?" - REALLY?!? I mean, WTF?!? You've already shoved your naked tits in his face :/ She doesn't "feel" anything serious for him until she witnessed him with the groupie. She felt jealous and he felt confused and wished he hadn't won the anal bet but he doesn't understand why he feels that way.

They're evenly paired as an H/h. While they may not be fit for my SG Buddies, I enjoyed watching the H battle his nature and try to figure out what made the h so special and different for him. Unfortunately for me, the plotline of the stalker just hijacked this novel and took it in a direction I didn't care for. Honestly, until the H gets kicked off the tour bus, this was 4 stars...but the stalker drama just tanked what was a truly interesting psychological look at the H and his lack of connection because of his extreme childhood.

This is the follow up to “For a Good Time Call”. In this book, Isaiah, Fiona’s brother, gets his happy ever after. If you didn’t read the first book, you can easily follow this one.

I loved this book! It’s set six years after Isaiah escaped the fanatically religious household he grew up in. He’s a businessman who sleeps around, and he’s far from over the trauma he endured. Then he meets his new next-door neighbour. Darcy is a rock star, she’s gorgeous, funny, smart, and tough. She’s leaving on tour with her band in a few days, and on impulse, Isaiah takes a job on their bus as a lowly member of the crew (despite being a millionaire!).
To top it all off, there’s a fantastic suspense plotline, as Darcy has a stalker who’s leaving her disturbing messages in places that fans shouldn’t be able to access.
I loved this book just as much as the first!

What I loved:
- Nothing. Seriously, I liked this book less than FSOG.

What I didn’t love:

Overall…
I have loved every other book I've read by this author, but this one is depressing, miserable, slit-your-wrists horrible and hasn't redeemed itself by the 80% mark. I feel like all these plot devices are being used to shock me, but I am not shocked. I am annoyed. Also, editing needs to happen in a big way.

5 Dark Rocker Stars

So I dived right into this book after "For a Good Time call ..." I fell for Fiona and I loved the story. I really needed to hear Isaiah's story. It was dark, gritty and full of mystery. I loved it and I fell hard for both Isaiah and Darcy. Darcy is a sexy rocker who has a hidden intelligent side that Isaiah can't help but fall for. Isaiah is a complex individual who has had so much heart ache through out his life has caused him to be emotional stunted. This story is Dark with a capital D and I LOVED it.

Highly recommend this Scars series but Jessica Gadziala!

God, this book was terrible. Why the hell is it in the romance category? There was nothing romantic about this.

Unlikeable characters, manwhore hero, detailed scenes of "hero" having threesomes, going down on OW and anal sex with OW. Vomit.

*sigh*

A huge let down, to be honest, especially after the amazing story. Fiona's story. I was expecting something deep, something beautiful that will left me all scarred but.. It was a wee bit disappointing.

Isaiah's burden is just as heavy as Fiona's. What their shitty dad made them do? Insanity. But they both made it but this time, Isaiah's on his own. Will he be ready to conquer the world?

I was not expecting a heroine like Darcy. She's a metal singer, for crying out loud. At first I wasn't sure about her but then I kind of like her but eventually, I'm confused. With the storyline leading me to a certain way, I was waiting for something familiar to happen. But it never came; I was hoping for scene where Isaiah and Darcy go head to head, building a love-hate relationship, or stuff we all adore, but nope. Nothing. In fact, it was annoying that Isaiah's simply acting like a jerk. No apologies or remorse or action that shows us that he falls for Darcy. Even the scene with his shrink, professor who-is-that didn't give us any revelation.

Okay I'm rambling. Overall, this book is confusing, the plot is pointless, even the romance is not sparkling at all. I don't understand the sudden change between two books. It's almost like Gadziala's a rookie author with this book. Meh.

But I still look forward to read more of Jessica Gadziala's books, don't worry. But this time, for Dissent, I give it 3 stars.

RE-READ: 09-27-21
4.5 Stars
I enjoy JG's books so much that I've decided to go back through all of them and do a re-read. Isaiah and Darcy are good characters and it was nice watching them fall for each other without actually realizing that's what was happening. They opened up to each other in ways they never had with anyone else.

ORIGINAL REVIEW: 03-10-2017
We first met Isaiah in his sister's book, For a Good Time Call. He was raised by a warped religious father who believed women should only cook and clean and used beatings as punishment. Isaiah is therefore unable to trust and connect to women and hasn't allowed himself to get close to one. Until he meets his neighbor, Darcy. She's in a band and she's loud and opinionated and absolutely beautiful. To get closer to Darcy, Isaiah joins her road crew. Turns out a stalker is after Darcy as well.

A romantic suspense.

STALKER INTENSITY

I have to admit I'm glad Isaiah got his story. It was a doozy. Not much takes me by surprise anymore but the events and the characters did in this one. Although I had suspected who the stalker was he still took me aback as to how hateful and violent he was. Very dark. I do love Isaiah though. He was such a damaged man but he overcame it. I loved Darcy's therapy at the end!

All in all a good read. On to Shane...

This book was so good! Darcy and Isaiah were completely from different worlds. The rich blonde cheerleader that transformed herself into a goth heavy metal singer and Isaiah who was raised in a shack with no knowledge of the outside world until his father and grandmother died and left him rich and has to learn who he truly is. What starts as an assignment from his shrink Isaiah takes off on tour with Darcy. This book was sexy AF! Jessica Gadziala isn’t shy when it comes to her steamy scenes! The whole story sucks you in. I’m excited to see what’s next in the Navasink Universe!

3.25: "Don't you dare go disrespecting her by implying that one incident in her life is going to define her. She deserves a better opinion than that from the man who claims to love her."

idk it wasn't really a romance IMO. Had 'smutty' scenes, but the overall feel was like mystery/crime/overcoming. I feel like it was a real story in the trauma but at the same time, it was like 200 pages so not a whole lot of depth. Average-ish.

Sorprendida.

On the heels of "For a Good Time Call..." comes the story of Fiona's brother, Isaiah. Isaiah was also a victim of their father's abusively strict religious upbringing. After his father's death, with the help of his sister, Isaiah learns about the real world. 6 years later he is living his life with empty sexual conquests. His new neighbor, Darcy is a free spirited rock star. He finds her a breath of fresh air and a challenge to conquer. Attempting to learn more about her he joins her road crew. They get close but when a stalker gets too close things fall apart.

This story is a slow burn with a meteor shower. We get romance, suspense, and mystery all rolled into one really great read. Watching Isaiah discover what is most important to him as well as seeing Darcy come to terms with what and who she believes in was a treat.. Another hard to put down book by a favorite author..

After my girl crush on Fiona (For a Good Time Call...), I was a bit worried about how I would feel about Isaiah. I decided to approach Dissent with an open mind and I am SO glad I did!

The poor man is so sweetly awkward in expressing himself and absolutely crept into my heart. There were some parts where I really felt sorry for him and how lost he felt. I can't even imagine how hard it must have been for him (Well done with the imagining of this character!).

Darcy is quite a force of nature. She is fierce, she's loyal and she is so no-nonsense I was cracking up constantly at some of the things she said. She's an incredibly strong female lead and I have so much respect for her guts and determination.

The dark in this story gets REALLY dark, but overall it's a fantastic book if you're willing to be open minded.

I liked this book. Isaiah is a complex individual who was sheltered his entire life until his father and grandma passed away. He had no understanding of the outside world. He lived in a shack with no electricity, no running water. He inherited a ton of money from his grandmother decided to hit NYC were his sister Fiona aka Fee lived. Fiona showed him her world and Isaiah adjusted , he worked in the financial district, turned into a male whore and tried to fit in. He then meets Darcy Monroe and falls in love but they will have to live though a long scary journey in order to reach their HEA. Will Isiah and Darcy get their HEA ? Will Isiah learn to live in the "real"world? Well I won't tell. Jessica has written another good book.

I am so conflicted with my rating for this! On the one hand I was gripped, I loved the story (although I guessed the big reveal about 20% in), I loved the two flawed MCs and them loving each other with their issues.

But I just struggled with how the graphic features in this book were handled! Darcy goes through something absolutely horrific, I mean, change you forever horrific and the book doesn’t really give it much time? It jumps from her being completely traumatised (understandably) to basically fine. Then the next chapter, boom, all solved?

With the awful thing she goes through getting so much time and attention and in depth detail I feel like her road to recovery needed more time too.

Also as a side note: give Jay a book thanks.

I wish GR allowed half-stars because I couldn't give this 5 stars but it came so close! I liked the characters, I liked the writing, and I liked the story - with one exception. Unfortunately, the resolution felt just a tad bit rushed, so I didn't get the tingles I usually get. Particularly here since there was a huge plot point so late in the game. But I still highly recommend this book and this author. Can't wait to read more.

I liked Darcy throughout the book. However Isaiah was a different story. I don't agree with guys trying to forget someone by being with another. He used all 7 elsewhere. It took sometime but I eventually began to like him. I was a surprised at who the obsessed stalker was. Poor Poe. I'm wondering if her band mates will get a story of their own.
