I've never been a huge fan of Splat the Cat, but our girls love these books. The cat is fuzzy and adorable and the stories have some innocent charm, but I was frustrated by the seemingly vapid churning out of books in order to capitalize on a popular character. There have been eight books published in the last year or so and many of them weren't even written by Rob Scotton. I was not impressed.

But then we borrowed Secret Agent Splat! from our library and I was pleasantly surprised to see Mr. Scotton as the actual author. I was even more pleasantly surprised to see an entertaining, engaging story, accompanied by the too-cute illustrations I've come to expect from this series.

So when I saw this book at our local library, I had high hopes. I was not disappointed. It's a story about giving thanks to a friend, trying to cheer him up when he's feeling sick. Our girls really liked this story, and so did I.

Based on my experience with this series, I will probably avoid the recently published books 'based on the creation of Rob Scotton,' like Splat the Cat: The Rain Is a Pain and Splat the Cat: The Name of the Game. I have a feeling they would just irritate me.

و ...

We love the Splat series in our house! This one is really fun because Splat makes a Thank You book for Seymour the mouse, his best friend, who is sick. The book covers things that Seymour helped Splat with in other books in the series, so we get to revisit some of those fun stories! Darling artwork and little extras in the pictures in the book. Just a fun kids book, teaching how important it is to say thank you and the value of friendship.

How sweet! Splat is a fun cat, and how wonderful that the whole book is about how to say thank you to someone who does so much for you. Especially when that someone is feeling sick. Sweet, sweet, sweet.

Splat the Cat #7: Splat Says Thank You! is a heartwarming and playful addition to Rob Scotton’s popular series. In this story, Splat learns about gratitude and the joy of saying “thank you,” making it a perfect read for teaching young children social-emotional skills.

Scotton’s illustrations are as expressive and lively as ever, capturing Splat’s quirky personality and the amusing situations he finds himself in. The text is simple, rhythmic, and engaging, ideal for early readers and for reading aloud with toddlers. Children will enjoy following Splat’s funny antics while also learning an important lesson about kindness and appreciation.

The book’s tone is cheerful, and the sturdy format makes it practical for little hands. Splat Says Thank You! balances humour and heartfelt moments beautifully, making it a story kids will want to revisit again and again.

Overall, this instalment is entertaining, meaningful, and visually delightful—a great choice for families, classrooms, or storytime.

Splat the cat says thank you to Seymore for everything he has done to help Splat in various ways, even if they didn’t work out such as when Seymore helped Splat to mend his mum’s broken vase but she noticed anyway. Splat makes Seymore a friendship book which includes all of these things. This could be used in PSHE for children in years 1 to 4 and the children could make their own friendship books, writing in each other’s what they’ve done to help them and to say thank you. Children could also discuss some of these things in circle time and the class could talk about how helping each other might make you feel happy. Some of the situations may be familiar to the children such as when Splay told Seymore a secret and he didn’t tell anyone.

Seyomur is ill and Splat presents "a Friendship Book" to him in hopes of getting him to smile. The rest of the book follows a pattern of Splat saying, "When _____, you _____. Thank you!" For example, Seymour sneaked Splat a flashlight so that Splat could read a book when he got in trouble and was sent to bed early. The last thing that Splat thanks Seymour for is making him smile when he was "covered in spots and not feeling well". On the last page, Seymour seems well again and is smiling. This is not my favorite book about being thankful nor my favorite "Splat the Cat" book.

Seymour is sick and having a tough time smiling, so Splat gets to work and tries to make him smile by showing him a book that captures some of Seymour's top gestures, all of them followed by a big thank you. This is a great hommage to Splat's best friend. The smallest, yet the biggest.

My favorite part was when Splat broke his mom's favorite ornament and Seymour 'fixed' it with tape and glue. Splat was still surprised that his mom somehow found out.

Borrowed it from the library.

In this book Splat lists all the things he's thankful for. My kids and I enjoy Splat the Cat books, but this one lacks a true storyline. For that reason, it is overall less enticing than the other Splat books.

Splat the cat's smallest friend and his biggest friend Seymour Rat is not feeling well. He's bed ridden and needs some cheering up. So, Splat brings out his big scrap book of all the times Seymour was there for him. He shares the memories and tells Seymore thank-you for each time he helped him.

Splat the Cat is a curious, gentle soul. His little mouse friend Seymour loves to be near him.
But Seymour is unwell and Splat wants to cheer him up. Splat’s home-made Thank You book is a heartwarming, funny and heartfelt tribute to the devotion of his ‘littlest and biggest’ friend.

When Splat saw that Seymour was sick and not smiling he wanted to cheer him up. He showed Seymour the book he had written for him, his best friend, and read it to him. This is a sweet story of friendship and is illustrated beautifully and with humour.

Splat says Thank You!
This is a thank you card within the pages of a picture book. Splat wants to thank his friend and does so page after page of being there for him, by being there himself. While this is out at thanksgiving time it is not a themed festive book but can be used at any time of year.

Splat says thank you is about splat the cat and how is friend mouse (Seymour) is sick. Splat just wants to make Seymour feel better so he brings seymour a book about their friendship and how thankful he is to have him as a friend and all the good memories they had together. In the end of the book it tells seymour thank you for simply being my friend. This is a good book to read in my first or second grade class because it says alot about friendships, friendships come and friendships go but while you have a strong friendship you should show them how much you care by telling them and making them feel better when they are sick or down. Sometimes its good to surprise friends and let them know how much you mean in their life. I would have the students make a short book about their friend and give it to them.

Splat's best friend Seymour isn't feeling well. This is very hard for him because they do everything together. Splat comes up with a marvelous idea to cheer his best friend up that will also let him know how much he is appreciate as well. To find out what Splat does please read this book.

Picture Book
Audience: K-3
Grade Level: 2nd grade

Activity: Discuss the friendship between Splat & Seymour. What do you predict will happen to Seymour & Splat's friendship? Will they be BFf4l (Best Friends for life)? Ask students if they agree with using manners and saying thank you, if so then why? Students can use their sentence writing skills to make a story and a picture about a time with their best friend.
