Marx, Marx, Marx... I get it, he is one of the forefathers of sociology. Enough, I got sick of reading about him every other page. His ideas are terrible and ruined every society they poisoned, you seem to have missed to mention this.

Other than that, the book is ok, it gives a basic overview of sociology and its leading theories. Mind you, they aren't particularly good, consistent or convincing. I expected more, but nevertheless the book has a good design. May be its sociology itself that leaves a lot to be desired.

DK is known for their beautifully laid out, highly graphic, yet extremely informative texts for all ages. With The Sociology Book, we have a book in an award-winning series (including religions, economics, politics, business, psychology, etc.) that makes a complex and difficult subject not only accessible but easy to understand. The book doesn't pander, lightly touch upon, or gloss over the subject; rather, the subject is broken down by sociologists through the ages and their viewpoints are explained. As such, this is an ideal book for teens and adults to really understand the topic of socoiology today, suitable for reading parts or the topic as a whole.

The book breaks down as follows: Introduction, Foundations of Sociology, Social Inequalities, Modern Living, Living in a Global World, Culture and Identity, Work and Consumerism, The Role of Institutions, Families and Intimacies, Directory, Glossary, Index. Within these sections, topics include: Science can be used to build a better world (August Comte), Gemeinshaft and gesselschaft (Ferdinand Tommies), The poor are excluded from the ordinary living patterns, customs, and activities of life (Peter Townsend), The freedom to remake our cities and ourselves (Henri Lefebvre), The modern world system (Immanuel Wallenstein), Culture is ordinary (Raymond Williams), The puritan wanted to work in a calling; we are forced to do so (Max Weber), The iron law of oligarchy (Robert Michels), Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature (Karl Marx), The time of the tribes (Michael Mafesoli).

As an example, a section entitled "Science Can Be Used To Build a Better World" by August Comte (1798-1857) will have a graphic image, a call out box with the focus of the statements and key dates, a bio of Comte, another callouts with related topics in the book and the pages on which they are found, a discussion of the theory, key works by the author, flow charts of how the theory evolved, quotes, graphical explanations of the theory, and art related to the era in which the topic was written. There are over 85 such sections in this book.

As can be seen above, this goes far beyond boring textbook with some random images. Readers can glance over topics to get an idea if they want to investigate further and get a sound feel for what is being presented within minutes - and then a thorough understanding for only a few minutes more invested in the words and graphics. As such, this is a great book both for those who learn from seeing the larger idea and then building upon the details and also those who like to start with small details and then build a larger picture.

The series is honestly phenomenal - all the books make very hard topics very easy to digest, understand, and explore. Very highly recommended as either a reference or great informative reading. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

Perfect for people who want to learn more about sociology!

I was curious about what I will find: a lot of interesting concepts and ideas clearly explained. Food for thoughts about the foundation of sociology, cultural identity and the family dynamics. It's an interesting read if you are at school or just curious about sociology.

These books are really good at simplifying ideas for school and college students as well as autodidacts. They may look juvenile, and sure they oversimplify and have big bright pictures, but don't let that fool you...

Whether a reader likes this book or not depends on the intent. If you want a very very very brief intro to all sociology theories, this book is good and includes illustrations of each theory so you don't even have to read that. But this also makes the book fragmented and boring to read, as if you are repeatedly reading 80 wikipedia introduction sections at a go with no interconnected flow. If you want a decent, illustrative, wikipedia introduction like summary of all sociology theories, go for this. The one thing that I learnt from this book is that sociology is crazy😂

Are you interested in a thrilling book with plot twists around every corner? If so, this is not the book for you. The Sociology Book is more like a textbook with units and chapters. However, this book isn’t all bad. If you are at least a senior in high school, like myself, you might be able to stomach the contents of this book. You may be asking why a high school senior read this book. Well I asked myself that as well. However, this book was fantastic. Even though the material was a bit tough to understand, I feel as though I learned a lot from this book. On the front cover, the author makes the claim that The Sociology Book is “big ideas simply explained”. These ideas are not so simply explained. For someone who hasn’t even graduated high school yet, a few of these big ideas are not so simply explained. The Sociology Book does have some important ideas tucked away in the pages. Such as, “the Declaration of Independence bears no relation to half of the human race” or “men's interest in patriarchy is condensed in hegemonic masculinity”. These topics and others discuss social inequality, the other units discuss the foundations of sociology, culture identity, and families and intimacies. These and a few other chapters in the book have given me and many others, food for thought. If you are a sociology major or you just happen to be interested in sociology, I would highly recommend this book to you. However, if you are a student that likes a good read, The Sociology Book would be great for you as well.

“The world could one day be filled with nothing but those little cogs, little men clinging to little jobs and striving towards bigger ones.”

So let’s start by getting the one flaw in this book out of the way, the cheap, crappy binding. Shame on you DK for playing your part in the cynical shrinkflation pandemic! Why even waste your time making a “hardback” if you just sneak in flimsy binding between the pages?... As someone who has been buying and reading your books since the 90s, I’d rather pay a bit extra and have better binding than pay for sub-standard quality.

Although Sociology is regarded as a relatively new social science its roots can be traced all the way back to Plato. This book starts off with the likes of Scottish philosopher Adam Ferguson in the 1700s, and the French Auguste Comte and the English feminist Harrier Martineau in the 1800s, the latter pointing out that the American declaration of Independence clearly left half of humanity out. And then we go onto some of the big guns in Marx, Weber and Durkheim et al and move on from there.

This was a veritable treasure trove of fascinating insights, and wonderful thinkers and doers, I was thrilled to come across so many new names and ideas, there’s rarely a dull or repetitive moment in here, McDonaldization, Disneyization, emotional labour, liquid modernity and whole host of other ways of framing the hidden mechanics of our experienced world. This provides so many great insights from so many compelling and challenging authors.

It’s also interesting to note the frequent overlapping and intertwining points between sociology, politics and economics and how they share so many similar origins, aims and results with outcomes which can impact locally, nationally and globally. Although familiar with many of the works and sociologists in here and yet I still managed to find a great list of new and unheard of sociologists and books to hunt down, which ran into double figures.

“Culture has always played a key role in pointing to possible ways of living that are outside the social “norm.” But from the 1960s, even art forms once thought subsumed were substituted into daily life and appropriated by the media. By absorbing the media’s messages people accepted society’s rules and values as their own; they realised that to step beyond them would seem neurotic. The possibility of rebellion has effectively been quashed: mass culture reinforces political repression.”

he tardado un año en leerlo jejejejsjse

Bien y meh. Útil en su función. Hay que tener muy clara la intencionalidad de este libro, y es un resumen de toda la sociología de forma bastante superficial. Es por ello que si no sabes por dónde adentrarte o no tienes ni idea del tema (como mi caso) te orienta un poco de que va el rollo y qué leer. Pero hasta ahí. Muchas de las ideas parecen incompletas porque están tratadas de forma muy superficial en dos páginas. La idea es un poco que a partir de leerlo, profundices en otros medios sobre lo que has leído. Y eso sería todo. Con tener clara la funcionalidad del libro, es disfrutable.

Listened to on Audible. Lots of breadth, which was nice, but relatively very surface level. I'm unsure how much of this is because Sociology isn't particularly advanced, and how much was because the book didn't describe it too well.

Lots of incredibly broad generalizations. "The world is modern, and now Western Culture is experiencing Disneyfication." Seems exactly like what good Anthropologists don't do.

Kitap vaat ettiğini yerine getiriyor ve sosyolojideki önemli çalışmaları gayet güzel özetliyor. Ana konuların gruplanması ve her biri altında ilgili düşünce damarının tarihsel evriminin sunulması takibi kolaylaştırıyor. Tabii ki her referans kitabında olduğu gibi bunda da okuduklarınızın en az yarısını unutmuş olacaksınız. Bu işin doğası bu, ne yapalım? Ancak yine de fazladan birkaç kavram, birkaç yeni düşünür, birkaç kitap öğrenmenin kimseye bir zararı yok.

Отворих... дадох шанс... Изслушах поне 1/3та от книгата, но просто... за сега поне не мога повече..

За сега смятам, че социологията е изцяло грешно устроена, даже бих стигнал до там да твърдя, че въобще е безпочвена, като въобще наука, филоосфия или каково си мислят социолозите че са.

Ще започна от по-отдалече вдъхновен от книгата на Соуел - Интелектуалците и обществото

Какъв е механизмът на верификация на идеите в социологията - как се решава дали една идея в социологията е вярна или не?
- Дали другите социолози са съгласни - т.е. консенсусен механизъм на верификация.

Както ще се съгласи всеки МАЛКО наясно с историята на науката, напр. историята на физиката - консенсуса в науката ПРАКТИЧЕСКИ ВИНАГИ Е ГРЕШЕН. Всяко ново емпирично откритие първоначално е отхвърляно от старите поколения учени.. в послесствие те са измряли и новите поколение са все пак решили да погледан през микроскопа или другото устройство са се съгласили, че емпиричното откритие съществува...

В социологията емпириката е до толкова зацапана, поради сложнотата на обекта на изследване, че практически не съществува, като такава. Т.е. социологията е просто философия. Едни мисли, други мисли, трети мисли...

Няма лошо да е философия. Аз съм на мнението, че и икономиката е философия, а не наука. Лошото са 2 неща.
1. Когато лъжеш, че правиш наука, а всъщност правиш философия. (тук и икономиката е под ножа)
2. Когато самият ти обект на изледване не е сигурно, че въобще съществува

Какво изучава икономиката?
Казахме, че е философия, тъй че бих казал, че икономиката е философия на ОСКЪДНОСТТА, и в частност на ЧОВЕШКИТЕ ДЕЙСТВИЯ за разпределение на ОСКЪДНИ РЕСУРСИ в АЛТЕРНАТИВНИТЕ ИМ УПОТРЕБИ и как това разпределение да стане най-оптимално - с най-малко загуби.

Мисля, че всеки разумен човек би се съгласил, че живеем във вселена с лимитации (особено през гледната точка на човешкия живот) - например времето е лимитация - всички ще умрем. Също така всеки разумен човек би се съгласил, че хората извършват дейстивия :D (дори да не са под свободна воля, НЯКАК СЕ СЛУЧВАТ тези действия). И останалите неща от определението следват - философски разглеждаме как да тези човешки действия (защото ресурсите не се разпределят сами) да разпределят лимитираните ресурси максимално оптимално, че да има минимум загуба - напр. как човек да си разпредели задачите си в 24 часа така, че да свърши максимално много от тях и да губи минимално време - това е икономическо-философски проблем.

Какво e социологията?

- Според учебника for Dummies - In a nutshell, sociology is the scientific study of society.

Sociologists use the tools and methods of science to understand how and why humans behave the way they do when they interact together in groups.

Though social groups — or societies — are made up of individual people, sociology is the study of the group rather than of the individual.

When it comes to under-standing how the individual human mind works, sociologists largely leave that up to psychologists.


- Според уикипедия - Sociology is the study of human behavior. Sociology refers to social behavior, society, patterns of social relationships, social interaction, and culture that surrounds everyday life. [...] Sociology can also be defined as the general science of society.

- Търсих определение в Учебника Introduction To Sociology by Anthony Giddens, но в главата Какво е социологията, така и не намерих отговор или определение...

Т.Е. по тези определения още от началото разбираме, че социологията е "наука" изучаваща систематично определен феномен от реалността. И обектът на изследване на социологията е ОБЩЕСТВОТО, решенията, които обществото взима, промените в тези решения и действията, които обществото предприема. Така както обектът на изледване на икономиката е "човешките действия в ситуация на оскъдност" или обектът на изследване на вирусологията са характеристиките и способностите на вирусите, то социологията изследва особеностите и СОЦИАЛНИТЕ ДЕЙСТВИЯ на ГРУПИТЕ ОТ ХОРА.

Мисля, че добре го обобщих.. ако нещо съм изпуснал казвайте..

Ем за мен социологията приключва до тук. Тъй като не съм съгласен че групите хора взимат решения и извършват действия :D

Всичко казано след това за мен са детски приказки, КАК АКО ПРИЕМЕМ, че групите хора бяха някакви големи животни, които взимаха решения и извършваха действия, би било така и така...

Да ако приемем, че това е така да, но аз приемам, че само ИНДИВИДУАЛЕН ЧОВЕК МОЖЕ ДА ВЗИМА РЕШЕНИЯ и ДА ПРЕДПРИЕМА ДЕЙСТВИЯ. Мизез е писал достатъчно много по това в книгата си Човешкото действие. Групите хора просто НЕ ВЗИМАТ РЕШЕНИЯ и НЕ ПРЕДПРИЕМАТ ДЕЙСТВИЯ. Отделни хора във всяка друпа вземат решения и дават заповеди и следват заповеди, или устройват средата, включително и социално-културната среда така, че да придърпват към дадено решение и действие, и да отблъскват от друго.

Когато шефа ти е казал направи това действие - ти извършвайки действия до голяма степен може да се каже, че извършваш действия от негово име, по негово решение.

Ако си мислите, че е страно и твърде невероятно цяло "поле в науката", в което има професори, което се учи в куп университети да е тоутъл булшит... ем не сте чели достатътчно история на науката, и цялостно история. Хората си умираме да халюцинираме, че някакви неща съществуват и да започваме да ги описваме. И цели катедрали да издигаме в тяхна чест.


Най-голямото нещо, което мога да кажа в защита на социологията, като ПОНЕ ЧЕ НЕЩО изучава, което съществува, то това може да са - СТИМУЛИТЕ (примамки, морковите - insentive е на английски и няма добра дума на бг) и АНТИСТИМУЛИТЕ (тоягата), които въздействат всеки един човек в неговите решения и действия във всекидевието му.

И така социоллгията да стане клон на икономиката - която изучава човешките действия в ситуация на оскъдност, под известни incentives и антистимули.

Но съм категорично ПРОТИВ само и само в името на това да съществува едно поле на фиолософията - да се приема за съществуващ такъв спорен феномен като обществото (- взимащо решения и предприемащо действия), а за сметка на това ДА СЕ отрича друг феномен - човешкото действие, чието съществуване е много по-неоспоримо.


Да, всеки човек живее в климат от известни моркови (инсентиви) и тояги(дизинсентиви), и при известни физически ограничения - пари, интелигентност, здраве, енергия, закони на държавата, закони на физиката. В този климат човек ВЗИМА РЕШЕНИЯ и ИЗВЪРШВА ДЕЙСТВИЯ (бездействието също е вид действие)
И ДА!, ОПРЕДЕЛЕНО ТЕЗИ ИНСЕНТИВИ и Дизинсентиви ПОВЛИЯВАТ на неговите решения и действия. Но само защото нещо повлиава нанякъде дадено решение това въобще не означава, че РЕШЕНИЕ НЕ СЪЩЕСТУВА. А социологията отрича това. Отрича че хората когато са в групи взимат решения, за сметка на "решенията на групата". И това го отрича цялостната парадигна на социологията.


В България в момента социологически климат е такъв, че има доста социални дизинсентиви на това един мъж да прави гей секс, например. Ако човека се е родил с такива върешни влечения (върешни инсентиви) днес си има физическите ограничения (дали има с кого) и има ИЗБОР дали да извърши дадено действие - гей секс. Взима си решение и в последствие е отговорен за това си решение.

Ако определена група хора променят социалните инсентиви така, че гей сексът дане е лошо нещо, ами стане препоръчително - тогава ТЕЗИ НОВИ културни инсентиви, ще повлиават решението на човека и действията му. Но пак попаднал в такава среда всеки човек си има ИЗБОР дали да извърши даденото действие и е отговорен за последсвията от това си решение.

В една група човек също взима решения. Тези решения са силно повлиани от решенията и действията на хората около него и до голяма степен на лидерът на групата, но пак човек си взима решения. Човек може да вземе решение с което да се откаже от следващи решения и да предостави следващите решения на друг, на лидера на групата например и само са следва заповеди, но това пак няма да направи така, че ГРУПАТА да взима решения и да предприема действия.

Решенията се взимат от един човек. Може да е от извършващия си, може да е от лидерите му.

Но няма такова нещо - или поне аз отричам съществуването му - на ГРУПА ОТ ХОРА, или ОБЩЕСТВОТО взе ЕДИ КАКВО СИ РЕШЕНИЕ.

Може разбира се някой човек да твърди, че ГРУПАТА Е ВЗЕЛА РЕШЕНИЕ, както аз мога да твърдя, че котката ми може да лети, но това не прави това твърдение кореспондиращо с реалността.

Социологията е твъгнала в страшно грешна посока която не води до никъде и от това което знам и доразбрах за нея е просто загуба на време... Просто не същесвуава.. Изучава нещо което не съществува - обществени решения и действия - обществото - групите от хора ПРОСТО НЕ ВЗИМАТ РЕШЕНИЯ и не предприемат ДЕЙСТВИЯ. Отделните единици хора взимат решения и предприемат физически действия.

Но докато има пари за заплати, ще има и варващи в тази религия.

Как да повярваш, че социологията е измишльотина, като ти плащат да вярваш, че наистина същестува :D

Като градиш цяла кариера на този мит.

Както едно време алхимиците са търсили филоосфския камък, който да превърне оловото в злато така и днес социолозите търсят обществото и обществените решения и действия.


А да не говорим, че самата книга едно 80% са ей такива изказвания
- WHITE WOMEN HAVE BEEN COMPLICIT IN THIS IMPERIALIST WHITE-SUPREMACIST CAPITALIST PATRIARCHY (- BELL HOOKS), които как ги коментираш.. Как въобще разговаряш по въпрос свързан с реалността с човек който говори и вярва в такива неща... 80% от ИДЕИТЕ в тази книга не са идеи, а са комсомолски лозунги..

Всеки диференциран начин на мислене си има диференцирана наука (както икономиката е мислене на какви действия може в границите на оскъдността) та явно социологията е науката за МИСЛЕНЕ В ОПОРНИ ТОЧКИ :D

"За момента съм на едва 3% слушане, а вече Маркс се споменава поне за 4ти път. Също така се споменават различни цитати въртящи се около това как ролята на социологията не е да изледва света, А ДА ГО ПРОМЕНЯ..
ОТНОВО.. МОЛЯ?!?

Ролята на науките е да описват реалността. Ролята на икономиката е да описва разпределението на оскъдни ресурси в алтернативните им употреби и как това да стане по-ефективно. Но не дава акъл....Но икономиката не дава акъл И ПОСОКА на къде да въеви това разпределение.
По-добър пример е химията. Химията те учи как работят атомите, и знаейки това можеш да си построиш както молекула за лекарство, така и за бойно отровно вещество..
Физиката те учи как да построиш както атомен реактор, така и атомна бомба..
Архитектурата, математиката и инжинерните науки те учат как да построиш както болница така и концлагер... Ако някаква дисциплина ИМА ЗА ЦЕЛ не да описва реалността, а да я ПРОМЕНЯ, то, да ме извиняват последователите й, но това не е наука, а идеология.

Науката се занимава с ТОВА КАКЪВ Е СВЕТА.
Философията, и в частност ЕТИКА (примерно) се занимава с КАК ТРЯБВА ДА Е СВЕТА.

НЯКАК СИ възхвалено цитират изказвания как социологията била с цел промяна на света, нещо, което хич не е за хвалене..

Бюрокрацията не се пише от ОБЩЕСТВОТО, а от отделни чиновници на ръководни длъжности, или от избрани народни предстаеители. " Общестовото" не прави нищо. Обществото не взима решения..


"Тия хора, социолозите изброени до тук, не гледат на хората като на индивиди, като на действащи лица, ами гледат на хората, като на част от някаква група... Да им е*а и науката... Дано не просължава в съшия дух. Защото не за друго, ами защото това е грешно..

ГРУПИ ИМА! ДА! Но решенията които се вземат в тези групи, съответните действия, които се предприемат от тези групи се вземат обикновено от ЛИДЕРА на групата..Дори в "демокрацията", човек ако малко е проучвал въпроса ще знае че изборите се решават от този, който е успял най-успешно и незабележимо да обърне общеатвеното мнение по някакъв въпрос. Повечето хора не си правим труда да следим в дълбочина процесите...
Единици хора вземат твзи решения и определят какво ще е "ОБЩЕСТВЕНОТО МНЕНИЕ" "Дори не съм разочарован, напротив, ОЧАКВАХ ТОЧНО ТОВА..

Очаквах социологията да се занимава с размити абстракции.. Като КЛАСИ, ОБЩЕСТВО, ДЪРЖАВА, ПРОЛЕТАРЯТ, КАПИТАЛИСТИ... Ане с хора от плът и кръв.
Не с културата на тези единици хора.

За сега съм банално неизненадан..
Дано ме изненада напред книгата и науката..
Защото ако е още от същото бих казал, че социологията ПРОСТО НЕ Е НАУКА.. а е философо-идеология.... Маскирана за наука.. Лъженаука.. Саянтизъм

Иначе самата книжка е хубава. Доре написана и обяснена. Даже много хубава. С много картинки. Постарали са се. И гласът на аудиокнигата е хубав.

Проблемът не е в книгата, а в това, че авторите които се коментират в нея са СТЕРИЛНИ дървени философи-ЗАГУБЕНЯЦИ (loserthinkers по Скот Адамс) Коментират неща от живота без опит в живота, Маркс примерно..

Основоположниците на СОЦИОЛОГИЯТА описани до сега просто не вярват в съществуването на ИНДИВИДА който има съзнание, мисли, взема решения и предприема действия.

Те вярват в някакви големи организми, групови съзнания, които НЯКАК вземат решения И НЯКАК предприемат действия.. :D

Колкото повече слушам писанията на мъдреците основоположници на "науката" СОЦИОЛОГИЯ, толкова повече се убеждавам, че те нито са били МЪДРИ, нито това е НАУКА.

А "мъдрите им мисли" са в общо взето пълно противоречие с целия ми житейски опит, и с всички знания от останалите науки и дисциплини свързани с хората като икономика , психолгия, биология и пр., които изучавам последнитр 5, 6 години.

Те може би за това се стремят социолозите да пишат неразбираемо, че да не ги разбере случайно някой, че ще им спрат финансирането.

Тук таме имаше 20% на адекватни автори, от това което четох.. даже ме сърби да я дочета, най-малкото да се посмея на 80% от останалите.. може.

То е малко като онзи виц:

Интересно е колко страшно много хора мислят в думи (word think по Скот Адамс) и лозунги, ако може да го наречен това мислене.

Също е интересно и колко много хора тръгват да изучават нещо без да се запитат това нещо съществува ли въобще?

Или друго - тръгват да описват реалността, а не се замислят от къде са дошли тези неща първоначално.. Например тези дето тръгват да разпределят богатството, а не се замислят, това богатсвто КАК СЕ Е ПОЯВИЛО..

Страшно много и то умни хора, не се замислят, че НЕЩАТА НЕ ПРОСТО СЕ СЛУЧВАТ.

Ест., че някои неща просто се случват - гръм кат те удари това е "божа работа"..

I didn't have expectations when I began this one because we all know expectations usually lead to disappointment
But this was so damn good that I put quite high expectations for the rest of the series. I'm sure it's going to be awesome to discover how it's like.
You're promised an easy-to-understand tour among the topics and founders of Sociology, and that's what you gonna get, BIG ideas SIMPLY explained, with a big bunch of simplified diagrams and pictures to better. That was pretty cool except when I got stuck not knowing is that example a bit eccentric of them or that eccentric example was just told by the Scholar being discussed in this chapter. But that happened very few times anyway.
The book is divided into eight sections; foundation of Sociology, social inequalities, modern living, living in a global world, culture and identities, work and consumerism, families and intimacies, and the rule of the institutions. Each divided into few chapters, each chapter discuss one or two scholars in the given topics. A bit dense and informative.

The big book series is fantastic . They have all the great branches of humanities - philosophy , economics, psychology, sociology and politics .

The Sociology book follows the standard format of other books on the series - traces the historical evolution of the subject through the men and women who have contributed to its advancement .

Sociology book gives the reader both outside in and inside out of society and human behavior in it .

One suddenly gets deep insights of how humans have “manipulated” others through institutions , religion , culture .

All books in the series are a must read.

Nonostante i miei entusiastici voti per questa collana devo ammettere che il libro della sociologia l'ho trovato meno arricchente e più difficile da affrontare. Il libro non è strutturato in un modo estremamente lineare dividendosi in argomenti che a mio parere risultano avere una minore coerenza rispetto agli altri titoli della collana. Mi riservo il diritto di darci un'altra lettura un giorno e rivedere questa valutazione spero in positivo.

Sociology. It's yet one of those subjects from the department of social sciences that most of us are interested in learning, but only have a vague idea of what it is about. Simply put, it's a study of societies, and how they change over time. Since its earliest influences in the 15th century, the ideas and concepts of what or how a society functions have changed many times over generations, and this book chronicles these ideas as well as the proponents and thinkers of these ideas.

Yup, it's yet another Big Book of "Something-Something". I always love these books, especially when they help to condense big, lofty concepts into something more digestible for people like me, who are just too impatient or don't have the time to read all the works in detail. But it's another subject that has me interested for a long time: the study of societies. How is a society formed? How does it function? What influences how it functions? It's the kind of subject that makes you question things that you thought you understand, such as the meaning of "society" and "government". This is one of those books where the authors have extensively compiled complex sociological topics into a neat book, and I find it to be enlightening and delightful to read.

The book divides sociology into several realms, including social inequalities, globalization and its repercussions, culture and identity, consumerism, the roles of institutions, and feminism. Some of the prominent figures of sociology include Karl Marx and his Marxist views; Max Weber and the rise of rationalization, Émile Durkheim and the division of society and its needs; Michel Foucault and his analyses of governance, power and authority; Ulrich Beck and the risks of an increasingly globalised and rapidly modernizing world; and Judith Butler and her ideas on gender (just to name a few).

Sociology is perhaps more complex than most people think, and I'm thankful for books like this for helping to condense complex topics into digestible nuggets that the general reader can understand. The book also explains how capitalism is one of the main driving forces in shaping contemporary societies, and how many prominent sociologists of the past (and perhaps even the present) are critics of it, which I didn't know before. In all, it's a subject that I wish I had explored earlier, but this book saves me a lot of time and enriched me with sociological topics succinctly. If you want to know more about sociology and its influential proponents throughout history, give this one a try.

The Sociology Book by DK features the ground-breaking work of Karl Marx, Emile Durkheim, and Max Weber. Marx and Durkheim use facts, figures, and statistics to support their theories, while Weber’s studies were of a qualitative nature. Other notable sociologists and their ideas that were presented are Ibn Khaldun, Harold Garfinkel, Michel Foucault, Judith Butler, Friedrich Engels, Alexis de Tocqueville, and W.E.B. Du Bois.
This book covers the foundations of sociology, social equalities, and modern living. It extrapolates on living in a global world, culture and identity, work and consumerism, the role of institutions, and families and intimacies. Of interest is the idea that societies have evolved from agricultural communities to the Industrial Revolution - division of labor, and mechanization, to being impacted by globalism with international corporations and New Technologies. Families are not as patriarchal as they used to be with fathers as the sole bread-winners, and moms’ place being in the home. Presently, there are traditional and same-sex marriages, and single families no longer only living in rural environments, but are dispersed in urban centers around the world. But the wealthy nations predominate with the Northern countries being more affluent than the Southern.

Many times I felt like hitting this book on a wall... why, I was thinking, am I reading this, I already know this by heart! 5 wasted years studying these theories, I think it is enough...I know them by heart... There are so many other things I do not know that need my attention.

Then I dug deeper and there were some concepts, few, true, that I did not know, and new perspectives that with all my studying for all these years, really helped me to understand things so much better, like the concepts on the working class or the fundamental concepts of sociology, that guess what, I did not know, since I did cultural sociology. It helped me understand things so much better, and I am glad I read this book. Honestly. It was great and I felt great. So happy to add it to my shelf. I love that no matter how much you study there is still something new to learn. All in all, I loved this sociology book and realized that I kinda like sociology, it is fun, but if I were a man, I would feel a bit bad about all that talk on feminism. I would probably feel so bad that I would transform myself into a black woman... lol... Bad joke. Sorry.

This is overall a well-written and fun book to read. I strongly disagree with their definition of a sociologist, which is too wide and too narrow at the same time. Who is a sociologist? It seems that everyone who stopped whatever they were doing to study social dynamics. This is a broad, not formalist, view of sociology. Up to this point, I am in love with their definition. At the same time, however, a sociologist, in their view, is an activist who wants to reveal how society operates so we can all work together to improve it (which dramatically narrows down the selection of authors). The problem with this definition is that it walks itself towards a biased selection of authors who are mostly in the “left”. Sociology has been regarded as a discipline of leftists and this book serves to intensify, rather than get rid of, the stereotype of sociology as “leftist- social justice warrior -granola head babble”. In any case, stay with my first sentence: this is overall a well-written and fun book to read.

As someone who has always been intrigued by sociology, this was one of those "about time" reads. It is a great book for beginners to dip their toes into the various key concepts and introduces the major sociological thinkers. DK's Big Ideas Simply Explained series is fantastic and very reader-friendly for the information that they bring across. After reading it as an e-book I've gotten the hard-copy, which is on its way to Singapore to be re-read from time to time. This is a great book to digest and think about the concepts put forth in bite-sized ways.

McDonald's effect (rational > emotional); Disneyfication (experienced-based consumption); Liquid modernity (as opposed to solid modernity of the past); simulacra (where virtual, hyper-reality is preferred over reality); compulsory heterosexuality (forcing male sexuality on women e.g. pornography where sexuality and violence are congruent; using women as objects - trafficking; prostitutes for sexual pleasure); material feminism (marriage as a labor contract benefiting men).

This book, so holistic that I had to put down, exhale for reflection then start on review.
If you are interested in sociology (even with little to no knowledge on the topic like me), have determination to pull through the early chapters on introduction and foundation and patience for the remaining more familiar and relatable parts, this book is highly recommended.
Without doubts, this book is written by experts in the field that even the concepts are rooted far back in intangible ancient philosophy, it is all about sociology, in layman terms. Every point is presented succinctly, underpinned by coherent charts, lasted for 1-5 minutes.

There are concepts that challenge to change or resonate with my existing perceptions: causal effect, power-knowledge relationship, honours change manners, globalization/ glocalization, internalize/externalize self, rebellion vs false need, future discounting. I am surprised to know we are living in the post industrialization, post modern age.

Literally took me a year to plod through this, but I did! I enjoy this series but I’ve also noticed that when I fall out of rhythm it’s really hard to get back into them.

I like the exposure to multiple ideas and big thinkers. I think the literature book was a little easier for me because it was more familiar and I’ve studied it academically. I had a better mental model for it and things “stuck” more fully.

For sociology, so many of these thinkers and concepts were newer for me. I think that made this approach of short snippets a little harder to hold onto. Additionally, they take up a lot of room with the graphics for a “big idea” but it doesn’t really feel like it’s used well. The graphics almost need to be MORE visually unique and connected to the content to really make them sticky in some way (imo).

Ultimately, I like this series, but I wish I stuck with it more consistently and had a little better mental models of the content area as a whole to help hang together all the individual thinkers and ideas.

Breakdown of Social Control

Conspiracies of social control are prevalent on the internet with little peer reviewed sources. This Sociology Book breaks down various theories into a scientific explanation as to why societies behave the way they do. Underneath the propagated surface of American Consumerism lies a dirty underbelly of oppressed minority and even to include the vast majority in various degrees. By recognizing these issues the educated population can come to make informed decisions on social change.
Be that as it may depending on social class and ideology your agenda may be opposed by the hierarchy of social and religious ideas. This book is an excellent text that when paired with philosophy, psychology, and economics sheds further light on the rules of the “system” and what power you have to change it.

Fantastisk bok för att bekanta sig med det övergripande sociologiska fältet. Såklart medför kvantiteten att nyans förgås. Men för att utveckla sin konceptuella förståelse av världen tycker jag det är mer värdefullt att man som lekman investerar sin tid för att få en generell sociologisk förståelse av världen snarare än en supernyanserad förståelse om en specifik teori. En bred konceptuell förståelse gör att sociologiska, och tidigare omedvetna, processer uppmärksammas, vilket ökar ens medvetenhet om den värld vi lever i.

I chose this book as I wanted to learn more about sociology, benefitting my purpose of having some contextual knowledge in applying for a major in relation to it. From the definition to its explanation, the book is detailed in illustrating the world of sociology, as the name suggests. With graphics, quotes, and summaries, the book helps readers who may not have much knowledge about sociology to learn about it more easily. Through its simplification, the book is often regarded as similar to Wikipedia as its contents are illustrative and may be deemed boring to some readers.

It’s ok i guess, it presents snippets of most sociological thinkers but unfortunately with this kinda thing a lot of nuance is left out. Honestly if i didn’t know better and have only read this book, i’d think every sociologist was an unhinged conspiracy theorist or conservative boomer.

From reading this, one would think that “change is bad” is the takeaway from most of these sociologists. Cultures are supposed to sit on comfortable dogmas lest they perish!
