Forget Tomorrow #2

Remember Yesterday

Rate this book
Follow-up to the New York Times bestselling novel, Forget Tomorrow!

Would you change the past to protect your future?

Sixteen-year-old Jessa Stone is the most valuable citizen in Eden City. Her psychic abilities could lead to significant scientific discoveries, if only she’d let TechRA study her. But ten years ago, the scientists kidnapped and experimented on her, leading to severe ramifications for her sister, Callie. She’d much rather break into their labs and sabotage their research—starting with Tanner Callahan, budding scientist and the boy she loathes most at school.

The past isn’t what she assumed, though—and neither is Tanner. He’s not the arrogant jerk she thought he was. And his research opens the door to the possibility that Jessa can rectify a fatal mistake made a decade earlier. She’ll do anything to change the past and save her sister—even if it means teaming up with the enemy she swore to defeat.

Read my interview with Pintip Dunn here.

This review is also on my blog illbefinealone reads.

Challenge of the day: write down thoughts on this book without any spoilers. Here goes nothing.

I've had this series in mind all year long, Mrs. Dunn's story is quite a memorable read. I jumped on the chance to read part two (I obsessively checked for a NetGalley e-mail until approval arrived).

Part one ended on such a sad note, and I was really hoping that it would be taken back at the beginning of the sequel, however as we learn from the first sentence, that doesn't happen. Instead, the dynamic relationship we had in the first book, is more than made up with... well I can't say what relationship cause spoilers.
Overall, this is a perfect sequel to Forget Tomorrow, if not even better. Mrs. Dunn brings her A-game, and her characters are still the strongest feature of the text. Still a fun read. I loved it.

I really enjoyed Forget Tomorrow, but Remember Yesterday was even better. Seriously. The first book really set the scene, and now readers will find themselves 10 years later into a world that just doesn't hold back. Many of your questions from the first book are solved and new questions are brought up in this twisty, YA sci-fi in which the past, present, and future collide.

Told from 16-year-old Jessa Stone's perspective, Remember Yesterday has the story of a set of close sisters that you came to love in the first installment in the Forget Tomorrow series, but with a romantic storyline between her and Tanner Callahan that will leave you swooning. It's an enemies to lovers relationship at it's best. Add in the old characters who you fell for in book 1 with some brand new characters and the gorgeous writing that Pintip Dunn is known for, and you have a winning book.

As someone who is often disappointed when the second book in a trilogy doesn't live up to the first one, I can honestly say that it's impossible to not love this series now. If you read book 1, make sure you pick up book 2, and if this series is new to you - what are you waiting for?

Remember Yesterday is the next instalment in the Forget Tomorrow series by Pintip Dunn. I liked the first book and after that horrific ending I was excited to get stuck into the next book. However, I felt an immediate disconnect when I opened my Kindle to discover this book was narrated by Jessa ten years later. Now, this does make sense on one level (don't want to spoil the story so I'm being vague on purpose) but I still felt let-down. Not sure the author could have written it any other way though.

I missed Logan so much in this book, but Tanner was an awesome male substitute. Jess was probably more likable than Callie as the MC but it did take me some time to warm up to these characters and this story.

The first half dragged for me and I felt the story was too similar to the first book but things really ramped up a few notches in the second half and I became immersed in the plot and addicted to the characters. The end few chapters were exhilarating and I was totally hooked. The plot was a lot less predictable in the second half and I really enjoyed it.

Now I love Jess and Tanner and I'm so happy with the reemergence of some of my fav characters toward the end.

I adore Pintip's style of writing and I have no issues there. Her world building is decent and well crafted as was character development.

In summary, after a bit of a disconnect and a slow start, I became engrossed in the story and the characters lives and I'm definitely invested in continuing this series.

Actual rating 3.75 stars.

I had the pleasure of getting an early read of the draft for Remember Yesterday. It's such a great sequel to Forget Tomorrow. I loved this as much as the first book in the series. Dunn is such a wonderful storyteller. The scenes and characters she writes are vivid and full of depth. You should totally mark this as must read this year!

I'm loving this series. The first book was Callie's story, which I would recommend you read before and remember yesterday is her sister's instalment.

Jessa has always felt like she has an impossible position to fill. Callie gave up everything so Jessa could have her own life, but finding your own way in the world isn't easy especially when everyone has high expectation of you. Jessa just wants to do her part even if it's only freeing laboratory animals. When on a rescue mission she is bitten by one of the creatures she is trying to save. This creates a glitch which enables her to discover the truth about Callie.

Tanner is an upcoming scientist and works for the enemy. He performs his experiments on animals. He is the complete opposite of what Jessa likes, but when she takes a closer look at him he isn't all she expected.

Secrets, lies and twist at every turn. Loved this book just as much as the last one. With the 3rd book out at the beginning of October nows the time to get your head in this book.

5 stars out of 5.

Up until 60%, I was really enjoying it. But then, the author decided to throw time travel in (which I should've seen coming), and then I got lost. I still managed to finish the book, though I haven't understood all the details.

It's pretty clear that there will be a third book. However, I don't think my brain can take it.

Inhalt

«I puff out a breath, annoyed at myself. I will not be that girl, I think fiercely. The one who’s going to worry about a boy when there’s a mob after us. I won’t.»

Jessa hat Charakter, weiss was sie will, kämpft dafür.

«“Whatever happens… I do want to start over,“ I say. „I don’t want a single mistake to erase the future. So.. may name is Jessa. And I would very much like to go to the past with you.“»

«I don’t know how long I cry. I don’t know when my lungs give out. Eventually, I’m aware of the cool, hard concrete against my skin. Of my throat scraped raw and of the dried tears stiffing my face.
Tanner lies parallel to me, close but not touching. When I look at his face, he blinks, slowly, drowsily, as if he’s been watching me for a good long time.»

Naja, egal! Ich lese jetzt Band drei! Muss unbedingt wissen wie diese Story ausgeht.

Fazit: Fesselnd, romantisch, unglaublich tolle Fortsetzung!

I decided to read book two of this duology, despite finding the writing in book one quite poor, to see how the story concluded. I found the premise in book one intriguing and I wanted to see the plot to it's fruition. However, this book, which is billed as book 2 of 2, ended on yet another cliff-hanger. This story is clearly not the conclusion I was hanging on for.

In this book, the writing was better than book one, but still lacking. The overall tone of writing feels quite juvenile. The characters and plot points were not well-developed and the story had gaps where one event jumped inexplicably to another, without giving a reasonable explanation as to how we got from point 1 to point 3. We just jumped and moved on. Overall, too many parts of the story were just ridiculous and beyond my abilities to suspend my disbelief. So while the concept is interesting and original, the delivery needs a great deal of work.

I think I tried no less than three separate times to start this book. I'd sigh, open the book, read the first paragraph, stop, put the book down, and then sigh again. Aaannndd repeat.

I'm a huge proponent of giving authors and book series a second chance. I'm almost notorious for it. For the most part, unless I find an author/book to be hugely offensive, I'll come back for another round. I've bought sequels to books I hated. Because I always think, this could be like Shatter Me. This could be a case of the first book being rubbish, and everything after being masterful.

But I swear the first book in this series gave me PTSD of some kind. I'm still so traumatized by the first book, I just can't with the sequel. I don't have the energy. I don't have the patience. I don't have the will power.

So this is me, admitting that I bought this book and read the first paragraph, and I just can't.

I accept that.

3.5 Stars. Definitely didn’t like it as much as the first book, but I still love the overall story of this. All of the technology and science is very interesting. I also really liked Tanner. My major issue is some of the repetitive phrases throughout the book. Excited to see how the series wraps up with the last book.

You know how often when you read books; the first one is always amazing and then you have high hopes that the next one will be just as great. Then when you read it, you feel a little letdown as it just isn't measuring up to the greatness of the first book. That's how I felt with Book #2 of Pintip Dunn's series Forget Tomorrow. I loved the first book with Callie and Logan's story and their rebellion against the world of Future memories after discovering that it could lead to genocide. We also were revealed a massive twist that Callie and Jessa though born ten years apart were, in fact, identical twins and that they were supposed to be born at the same time, but due to them holding the key to the future memories, their parents planted the embryos separate. Remember Yesterday is set ten years later after the end of Book #1. Callie has been gone ten years, and Jessa is now sixteen years old and still a valuable asset. She spends her time trying to save those in trouble in her acts of rebellion against the Commander. Remember Yesterday tells not only the story of the budding romance between Jessa and Tanner but also the act of love that Jessa will do to save her sister and the world from the terrible wrongdoings the past ten years. I did, however, get a swoon, and happy moment during Remember Yesterday as in Book #1 it briefly touches on their father who went missing during a time-travel experiment and he returns in Remember Yesterday which was awesome. Will Jessa be able to save Callie and set everything right or will it cause more harm and ripples for the future?
Find out in Book #2 Remember Yesterday. P.S I do have a cover crush on this series.

MY HEART CANT CONTAIN ALL MY EMOTIONS. THAT IS ALL I’M GOING TO SAY.

The book was on fire from the very first pages- figuratively. I don’t like it when sequels are slow paced in the beginning, and that book was definitely fast paced. The thing I love the most about Dunn’s writing is that she doesn’t write aimless sentences or whatever. Everything has a point and is interesting to read, and many authors, talented and all, neglect the fact that they have impatient readers who don’t tolerate the 3 pages long descriptions of how someone looks like *coughs* CASSANDRA CLARE *coughs*

“You don’t need an ocean in order to drown. Sometimes an inch of bath water is all it takes.”

The book takes place 10 years after everything happens, and man, when you see how every character developed and just how Callie set an example for everyone to follow. That was just golden.

I don’t have enough words to tell you guys how much I loved this book.

A solid 3.5 that broke my whole heart gave me all kinds of anxiety and made me so happy all at once. The only think that felt different here compared to book one was how certain things where explained to other characters. It was glossed over so we got limited reactions and I wanted to see more because Pintip does nothing If not shatter a soul with how emotional she can make you and her characters. Over all I loved this story though and I can't wait for book three.

Jessa is against scientists. After what she's been through she thinks all of them are bad. Her psychic abilities are rare and very special, so they've treated her like a study object in the past and Jessa never want this to happen again. Her past experiences traumatized her and she doesn't think science can ever fascinate her. That changes when she gets to know Tanner. Tanner is a brilliant scientist and knows it too. Though Jessa finds him arrogant and unlikable she's interested in him as well. What she doesn't know is that their futures are linked.

Jessa has to right a wrong and she can't do this on her own. Tanner is the person she needs, but he's keeping secrets and he's a scientist, so Jessa isn't sure if she can trust him. When everything in her world is different from what she thought it's time for her to reconsider. Maybe the boy Jessa hates so much is the best ally she can possibly have.

Jessa likes taking risks and she's a brave and bold girl. She acts impulsively sometimes, which often gets her in trouble. She will do anything for the people she loves. I loved reading about Callie's sister and their stories are equally interesting. It was fun to see both the similarities and the differences between them. Jessa is just like her sister when it comes to love, when she falls she falls hard. Tanner is a boy with a complex history and I was intrigued from the start. I enjoyed the conversations he has with Jessa. They have good chemistry and I liked reading about their deepening connection.

Remember Yesterday is another action-packed story. I loved Pintip Dunn's smart thinking about time loops and sending memories from the past. It's clear she has thought things through and she explains them in a clear and understandable way. Her world is intriguing and the plans that are being made are intricate and always thoroughly described. There's a surprising ending once more that makes me eager to continue reading the series. I loved Remember Yesterday, it's an incredibly clever story.

4.5 Stars!

A big 'Thank you' goes out to Entangled Teen, Pintip Dunn, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review an E-ARC as well as Chapter by Chapter for allowing my participation in the blog tour!

"You can change your future all you want, but you will never get away from walking certain paths."

It's rare to find a sequel that's just as addicting as the first, but here it is! Remember Yesterday is every sci-fi lover's dream and fans of Forget Tomorrow will not be disappointed! Jessa's story is filled with twists and turns that will get your adrenaline pumping and mess with your sleep patterns because it's near impossible to put down!

Callie's sister Jessa isn't the sweet, innocent little girl she used to be. That girl died the minute her sister killed herself in front of her very eyes just over ten years ago. Now seventeen, Jessa isn't sure if Callie's sacrifice was worth it and feels tremendous guilt over the hole her absence has left in everyone's lives. That guilt and desire to be worthy of her sister's unconditional love makes Jessa a risk taker, devoted to making sure that the future Callie tried to stop doesn't become the present.

When a rat rescue goes awry, Jessa is forced to get close to the arrogant and annoyingly attractive boy-genius Tanner Callahan, the embodiment of everything she despises. He's a scientist determined to discover the secret of Future Memory, the very thing young Jessa was tortured to obtain and Callie died to destroy. But is there more to him than meets the eye? Is he really just a mislead pawn in Chairwoman Dresden's evil plan? Unsure, Jessa must make the choice to team up with him anyway because Tanner has access the thing she wants most in the world: her sister Callie-- alive.

Jessa and her family have been being lied to for the past ten years, Callie didn't die after injecting herself, but it was close and she's been in a coma all this time with her body hidden deep within the floors under TechRA. Now she's fading fast, her mind unable to find hold of the present is threatening to give out and her only hope at survival lies with her sister. On her mission to save Callie, Jessa will come face to face with her worst fears and find out she plays a greater part in the events of the past and future than she ever thought possible. Will she succeed or is this fate already Fixed?

The world Pintip Dunn has constructed is so rich and ingeniously built! I absolutely loved the way fate and time are explained, it's easily understandable and makes sense without the headache that normally surrounds issues and complexities of time travel. It's also great that almost all characters from Forget Tomorrow were present and that we get to see how there lives change and if/how their future memories change and play out. There are a few plot twists and surprises that I totally should have seen coming, but still managed to jump out of the bushes and smack me upside the head anyway. Keep in mind, when you're out to change the course of the world, it's important to Remember Yesterday!

“I can’t shake the feeling we’re meant to be in each other’s lives.”

Spoiler-Free Review

Wow. Holy Fates, I loved this book! This was a very successful sequel. After the crazy, cliff-hanger ending of Forget Tomorrow, I had some ideas on how this sequel would pan out. I was so very wrong, and I am so glad I was! I was not prepared for a jump in time of 10 years and basically a whole different set of characters, and definitely a different narrator. AND I couldn’t be more thrilled with how it played out! It was so much more than I could have ever wanted & expected. It is going to be so hard to review this book without spoilers, but I promise this will be spoiler-free.

Jessa has grown up in the shadow of her sister Callie who changed the Fates of many citizens of North Amerie. Some people are not happy with Future Memories, and no one is more affected than Chairwoman Dresden, the head of FuMa, the agency that controls the Future Memory delivery. Dresden will stop at nothing to achieve her goals, even manipulating the citizens and scientists. But Callie made immense sacrifices to try and stop Dresden’s evil ideals when it came to future memories and Jessa will do whatever it takes to help achieve Callie’s goals.

Tanner Callahan has been fated to be the most prominent scientist of all time and he has the ego to match. Jessa hates Tanner (and most scientists) and will do anything to sabotage his attempts to study Future Memory. Tanner seems to keep crossing paths with Jessa and he is starting to infiltrate Jessa’s thoughts. There are some seriously steamy and devastating anticipation between these two characters. Where we had such sweet and endearing teenage love in Forget Tomorrow, Remember Yesterday is very much an enemies to lovers trope, which is my favorite kind of romance! I have to say that this dynamic definitely solidified this sequel as better than the first book, and that doesn’t happen often. Tanner has such a cocky smirk that I adore, and Jessa is a force to compete with and honestly only someone like Tanner could grab ahold of her adventurous heart.

So much is happening, and we get a lot of answers from Forget Tomorrow, but we also are left with a slew more in this crazy, twisting, time jumping story. I am thrilled that we get a third book, Seize Today, as I do not want to leave this amazing futuristic world, but waiting another year is going to be so hard!

This sequel is a solid 5 stars, while Forget Tomorrow was only 4 stars for me. Pintip Dunn’s writing technique definitely improves with this book and I loved the twists and turns. This is an immersive and fast read. You will not want to put this book or this series down. Also, be prepared for another big cliffhanger. Again, just like in book 1, some of these dystopian/sci-fi themes have been explored a bunch previously, but I absolutely loved the story she is weaving and I implore you to read this series. I feel like I cannot properly review this book, because I kept having to delete every damn spoiler, but this is a really fun and thrilling story!

Splendid, Exciting and Excruciating. Yes, excruciating or intense pain because, at the very first line of the book, it brought back some feelings that don’t mean to be felt. However, as painful as it is. Readers like me who will never move on from the first installment will remember the yesterday. Okay, Rafael. Breathe. Inhale. Exhale. Just going to fix myself first.

So, I wanted to talk about Pintip Dunn’s book covers first. Who wouldn’t get attracted to those amazing, colorful, and captivating book covers? I was like. I do love beautiful book covers because it was just covergasm. But didn’t expect that this book is stunning as it’s story.

What made me hooked with Pintip Dunn’s books is because her writing style is good that I easily inclined with the story and be there to feel and imagine what was happening. The tone that she use with is kind of soothing and makes me want to listen to the words but in reality, I was reading the book. It is a fantastic ability. Writing a good book while giving us an exemplary plot and what’s more? A beautiful cover art.

ry1The story set foot with Jessa. I don’t want to spoil anything for you because this book is really good and I think one of the best Young Adult Science-Fiction series that I really found. But, I tell you. I struggle with her. Not in a bad way. Look, try to place yourself in someone who has lost someone in the past and tries to fight and keep on moving forward but keeps on being haunted by her own thoughts? It’s kind of painful. At least, for me, that’s my interpretation.

However, what makes this book more interesting is because there are another two guys who would like a heart to embrace with! I don’t know which one should I root for: the guy who is always there on her side or the other guy who making himself the antagonist? It’s kind of hard because both of them have qualities that I think the protagonist Jessa would love. If you are curious, see it for yourself. Teasing here.

Apparently, Jessa is one of the protagonists that I came to love. She is caring, beautiful inside and out, extraordinary, extremely brave and intelligent all at once. It feels like I am reading a book that the story wishes to create for herself. She has fears but those fears are justifiable. What made me really fell in love ry2with Pintip’s book is that the most common focus of her story is always set for the love of family which I really adore. And it has captured my heart.

Remember Yesterday is something you will love through and through. A fast-paced novel that you want to set foot and live with (or not? hahaha). You will like the revelations, you will love the chemistry, you will mourn and above all, you will be contented (or not? I want more.) It will give you a total destruction of choosing and making decisions. It will challenge your mind and predict what will happen next. It’s just amazing that Pintip could write a book this good. I’m really looking forward to more. Cheers!

MY RATINGS: 4.5 STARS!

Thank you to Netgalley and Entangled Teen for a copy of the eArc in exchange for a fair review.

Remember Yesterday picks up 10 years after the end of Forget Tomorrow. If you haven't read Forget Tomorrow I highly suggest you start there and stop reading. Jessa is now the same age Callie was when she sacrificed herself to change the future. All of her life Jessa has felt a little less than and she has been okay with it because she loved Callie the best too. When she receives a vision she is a little put off since she hasn't seen anything since Callie died. She soon decides that Olivia must be the one sending them to her and she sets off to see what she can find out where she has been the past ten years.

Soon Jessa realizes she is going to need the help of self-important scientist Tanner to get the answers she is looking for. But when he shows her what is behind the door she finds that she isn't ready to know everything yet. Soon after they are on a race against time and through time to save someone and change the future again.

I know that was a little vague in the second paragraph, but I hate spoilers so I don't even hide them in reviews I just don't post them. This was a great sequel and I loved that it was from Jessa's POV, we finally get to understand and see the sister that Callie loved so much in the first book. I also really loved Jessa and Tanner, so see them grow and change and the relationship that unfolds is amazing. My only complaint is the ending didn't quite feel like a wrap up. There were still a lot of questions I felt that weren't completely answered. As far as I can tell this is only a duo, so I think that is what keeps me from rating it a five and really raving about it.

This was such an epic read that I honestly don’t know where to begin. My greatest wish right now would be to see these books turned into movies. So, where do I start? First, let me say that I am in awe of Pintip Dunn’s plotting skills. This whole time travel thing can get pretty complicated, but she pulls it off flawlessly. Every piece of the puzzle falls perfectly in place with no loose ends whatsoever. It’s amazing how every little detail has a purpose and is there for a specific reason.

The book is told entirely from Jessa’s point of view and it takes place 10 years after the events of Forget Tomorrow. Jessa is no longer a little kid and although she’s been deeply affected by what happened in the first book, she’s still a fighter and such an admirable girl. I loved Jessa’s character just as much as I loved Callie’s character in Forget Tomorrow. We also get introduced to Tanner Callahan. We know who he is from the first book (the scientist who invented future memory), but in this book we actually get to know him. And guess what? Yep, I loved him too!

All in all, I am equal parts excited and nervous to find out how this series ends. The author has set the bar so high that I don’t know how she is going to top it off. However, I have faith that she will come up with an epic finale to this fantastic series.

Much as I enjoyed Forget Tomorrow, this has to be a case of the sequel being even better.
When Callie takes her life to prevent Jessa being the subject of experiments I wondered where book two would pick up. The answer is ten years later, with the focus on Jessa as she adjusts to life without her sister.
Initially I was unsure about this decision, but as the novel developed I could see just how precise the plotting was for this. Without giving too much away, Jessa has to find a way to fulfil her future by doing what she can to prevent the creation of future memory. She is reliant on arrogant scientist Tanner, who is - rather obviously - the potential love interest. Once they stop insulting each other and focus on what they need to do I thought the relationship between them was rather cute.
This twisted and turned, but as things pulled together and we could see how one moment linked to another I really appreciated seeing events from another perspective.
Thanks to the publishers and NetGalley for the advance copy in exchange for a review. Blog tour for this on 14/10/16-on mygoodreads.co.uk

Review in Italian: https://lalibreriadij.wordpress.com/2...
4 and a half stars
I requested an early copy to Netgalley.
I loved this book! At first I couldn't understand anything because of all the changes that happend in the story and to the characters, and the different pov didn't exactly help.
But then I got a gist of Jessa mentality and her feelings, and I was compelled to end the story (after future memories to the past we got time travels, OMG!). I needed to know how it all ended and how the plot was going to develop. And then boom! a completely knew side of the story I didn't expect. And a cliffhanger...I can't wait to have the third book in my hands!
I know it'll be great!

From Jessa's POV
It's been years since Callie, Jessa's twin sister gave up her life to save Jessa, whom the future predicted was to die in the hands of her sister. Although all evidences pointed towards Callie being dead, yet Jessa and Logan still hoped.
To help bring to actualization the future Callie died for, Jessa had to work with her supposed enemy, Tanner to make that happen. In the process, some shocking secrets that rocked their worlds unfolded
Ever since I discovered this writer, I've been totally amazed at the kind of stories Pintip can weave and this was no different.

A special thanks to Entangled Teen publishing for allowing me to read this! You guys rock! All thoughts and opinions are my own!

And just when I thought my heart couldn't hurt anymore by this series, Pintip Dunn just takes it and rips it up some more. I mean, my god, my heart can only take so much breakage.

There is going to be some spoiler tags in this review. It's hard to review this book without spoiling some things from the first book. So if you haven't read the first book yet, read this review rather cautiously.

But damn, if this isn't a great series so far. In this one, we follow the life of Jessa, Callie's sister. Jessa is 16 years old and boy, she is a very angry and hurt child.

I mean, that alone hurt my heart. This poor child truly felt like no one really cared for her. Sure, they all loved her by association to Callie but it wasn't ever really true love. My heart really broke for this girl.

I did find it a little hard to connect to Jessa in the beginning. Her POV was a bit different then Callie's. She was ruled a little more by emotion then Callie was. But, as the story progressed, I found that I connected to Jessa more and more. I felt the resentment that she felt from her mom and everybody that was a part of Harmony. I chalked it up to her just been a moody teenager but then she started to interacted with different people and I was just like wow.

The relationship that developed between Tanner and Jessa was unusual at first. I didn't quite understand it. I thought it was a hate to love trope, which I am always down for, but Tanner was more enamoured with her than what that trope demands. Of course, I judged too quickly and the story behind their relationship was explained. I now fully support it and I find that it makes a lot more sense than in the beginning.

I'm still very unsure of Harmony and the leader, . Things were kind of proven to me during this book and I was glad for it. Because I hate feeling paranoid and have it turn out to be nothing. I still think that there is more to Harmony than what meets the eye and I hope my suspicions turn out right.

Overall, I'm still loving this series. I am anxious to see what the conclusion is. The blurb from the third book says the POV is from Olivia, the Chairwoman's daughter. Should be interesting to get inside her mind, as she can see the future and just the fact that she is the Chairwoman's daughter. I just so badly want everything to work out for everybody, even Harmony. Why am I like this?

I put this on my to-read list after reading (and enjoying) the first book in the series, but even though it's only been a year since I read that, I couldn't remember anything that happened in the first book! I reread my review of that, which didn't jog my memory, and then dove into this, hoping it'd fill in the blanks for me. And it did - the author did a good job recapping the relevant information from the first book without dwelling on it. This picks up years after the first book ended. Jessa potentially holds the key to inventing "future memories," a tool that society used to use to allow people to send a vision back to their past selves to let them see what was in store in the future and to properly "sort" them based on how they'd benefit society. This technology has been ruined, and Jessa doesn't want it invented because her sister sacrificed herself in order to prevent it.

I felt like the plot in here was pretty thin. It almost felt like a partial recap of the first book's plot, dealing with the invention of future memories, but with different key characters and from a different perspective. I felt like this book maybe needed a different angle or perhaps a stronger plot that didn't simply revolve around whether or not future memories could be re-invented, as they were already invented once. It felt tiring.

The writing in here was decent and kept the story moving along nicely, although there were a few things that bothered me. The romance in here made me cringe, with Jessa feeling like she hated a guy because he was working with scientists, yet every time she's around him, she could only think about how attractive he was. I understand her having those thoughts here and there, but it was done with a heavy hand and seemed awkward more than anything else. Additionally, the villain in here (the chairwoman overseeing the future memories project) felt like a caricature at times and I didn't fully buy the reason why she was so desperate to invent future memories - or why anyone would think it was a good idea and be cheering this project on. It didn't make sense.

I lost interest in this story by the halfway point but read for a while longer, hoping it'd pick up steam. No such luck. This wasn't bad by any means, but it lacked something to keep the story engrossing and I realized I just didn't care where it was heading.
