Kidnapped by Indians ten years ago at the age of seven, Teressa Bryant has no memory of her parents or her life in San Francisco. Known as Winter Rain by the Lakota, she is on the verge of marrying a Lakota warrior when a handsome stranger rides into the village. Half-breed Chance McCloud, known as Wolf Shadow among the Lakota, has been hired by Teressa's parents to rescue their daughter from the Indians. The attraction between Chance and Teressa can't be denied and soon he's torn between his need for the reward offered by Teressa's parents, and his need for Teressa.
Madeline Ruth was born on 1963 in California, where she raised. She married her high school sweetheart and they have three sons, all handsome enough to be cover models. Growing up, her favorite pastimes were going to the movies and going horseback riding on Saturday mornings at Griffith Park. Madeline has always been "horse happy." A horse was the one thing she asked for on every birthday and every Christmas. Many years later, that dream came true when she bought an Appaloosa mare named Candy—because she was so sweet. Madeline loves animals. Over the years, she's had numerous dogs, cats, fish, mice, hamsters, turtles and birds, and her horse, of course. The most exotic pet was a crocodile that belonged to one of her sons. Currently, she has a terribly spoiled Pomeranian named Teddi, six goldfish, a catfish, and a betta. When she's not writing, Madeline enjoys going to movies and the theater. Her favorite plays are The Phantom of the Opera, The Scarlet Pimpernel and her all-time fave, Beauty and the Beast. She also loves reading, going to lunch with her best friend, collecting Star Wars, The Phantom of the Opera and Beauty and the Beast memorabilia, and playing with the most beautiful, adorable, brilliant grandkids in the world.
Madeline started writing when her children were still at home, and she wrote for several years, finding time to write after her children were in bed and her husband was at work. In true cliché fashion, she wrote the books and put them under the bed, never telling anyone what she was doing, until one day she let a friend read one. Encouraged by her friend's comments, and armed with a copy of Writer's Market supplied by said friend, Madeline began sending out query letters. After six years and 31 rejections, Leisure Books bought Reckless Heart, and she's been writing ever since. After writing several Westerns, Madeline decided to try her hand at something else and wrote her first vampire romance. It was a short story titled "Masquerade" for an anthology. She loved writing that so much that she wrote her first full-length vampire romance, Embrace the Night, and thus Amanda Ashley was born. One of her dreams had been to write for Harlequin, and she accomplished that in 2003 with the publication of her Silhouette Romance novel, Dude Ranch Bride. Madeline loves to hear from her readers. This is the second book I've read that Madeline Baker has written. I will admit it now...I had high expectations for this and it was a slight let down. It's never good to go into a book with expectations. However, I loved Lakota Love Song and I was hoping I would adore this one too, but I didn't. It was okay.
At first, I couldn't put down the book! I was highly addicted, but at about chapter 8, I found my mind drifting. There were a few dry spots scattered across the book which made the book a little hard to read. Those undry spots were wonderful! I really did like the story Madeline Baker told, but at those dry spots I would sit the book down and not pick it up for a day and not really care. There was a lot of unnessary parts scattered about. A lot of bits that had nothing really to do with the storyline. Besides that, I enjoyed all the characters and how they had faults. Characters seem more realistic and relateable when they have flaws. Like Winter Rain she was not the brightest bulb in the bunch and a little naive and Wolf Shadow was...selfish and a jerk sometimes.
All-in-all, I found myself not wanting to read this sometimes when a boring or an unnessary part came up. However, I enjoyed the story and the characters. It's hard to pick rating for this one. There's a lot of negatives, but a large amounts of positives. I think I'll have to give this book 3 stars***. I plan to read more of Madeline Baker novels in the future. =) I do recommend this book to someone who wants a light and predictable read for a lazy summer day.
Everyone has a guilty pleasure when it comes to reading, mine is romance books, all kinds actually. Yes it is true the cover of this one looks circa 1980's, but it was published in 2003. The story is good, there is alot of detail to the characters, which is different from the we meet today, and I think we should get naked and have have sex tonight type of romance book that has come out lately. This one has an actual story with characters that you may actually like and at the end of it all, it more than just a hook up but rather it is a true romance with the happy ending. Enjoy if you het a chance to read it.
I just love your stories and the love and mystery 's you put in them. I'm one of those people that didn't do much reading but after I retired, I find I had so much time on my hands and can't put a book or now my Kindle down I have almost all of your books. Thank you. Ada G.

Missing daughter, stolen by Indian's and brought up as one of their own. A man with vengeance on his mind helps find her then falls for her. A good story, well written.
Loved the story! Hated the father! *Spoiler Alert!* The part with Cynthia in the Hotel, is my favorite, I couldn't stop laughing! Definitely recommend! <3
I haven't read a romance novel in a long, long time so I thought I would give one a whirl. I used to like the Native American/white person romances when I was younger. Maybe I'm too old and jaded but I thought this one was a little silly. The main character, Wolf Shadow, had an instant attraction to Winter Rain practically from the first chapter. That premise may have worked when I was 18 but seems very strange at 40. Every woman knows men don't fall that fast and if they do, they are usually clingy and needy and we don't want them anyway.
The writing was quite descriptive and I enjoyed that part of it but the book tended to drag in some places and I found myself skimming over the second half. I knew how it was going to end so I didn't feel the need to read every page once I found myself wondering how silly this couple is. This is the second Madeline Baker I have read and I don't think I will read anymore. This is a great book if you're young, innocent and view love and relationships with rose colored glasses.
