'Catch Me' is a collection of poetry and prose that is at once poignant and powerful. With honesty and passion, celebrated author Na'ima B. Robert takes the reader on a journey where admonitions are potent, wounds are laid bare then swathed, and the soul is soothed with hope of revival and renewal.
Na’ima B Robert is descended from Scottish Highlanders on her father's side and the Zulu people on her mother's side. She was born in Leeds, grew up in Zimbabwe and went to university in London. At high school, her loves included performing arts, public speaking and writing stories that shocked her teachers. Her popular 'From my sisters' lips' explored the reality of living as a Muslim woman in the West. She has written several multicultural books for children, including 'The Swirling Hijaab', 'Going to Mecca' and 'Ramadan Moon'. She is also the author of the teen novels 'From Somalia, with love', 'Boy vs Girl', 'Black Sheep' and the award-winning 'Far from Home', a historical novel set in Zimbabwe. Her cult classic 'She Wore Red Trainers' pioneered the 'halal romance novel' genre. She divides her time between London and Yorkshire and dreams of living on a farm with her own horses. Until then, she is happy to keep telling untold stories, calling for increased representation in children's books and mentoring other aspiring Muslim writers with her writing groups and programmes.
I must admit there are not many poetry books I usually read, but there is something in the latest book "Catch Me" by Na'ima B. Roberts which resonated with me. Perhaps it is the deep truths which seep between the lines, or the balm of comfort and hope found in the words. In her poem entitled "Healing" she captures the true essence of the whole book.
"To the sisters who are suffering, to the brothers who are broken, who carry invisible burdens, and burn with pain unspoken.."
A reflective collection of poetry and prose which not only empathise with the tests life throws at us, but also encapsulates how there is One who is there to catch us when we fall. It permeates to our very core reminding us of our existence in an ever changing world, where solace, hope and peace can be found. My personal favourite from the book has to be "Still Learning." A must read!
Na'ima B. Robert has reached deep into her soul to bring these words to the surface. A soul-stirring read, with pauses to think about the careful choice of words by the author, is an enlightening experience.
In this anthology, Robert proves herself among the best contemporary poets. The marriage of its words and rhythms are poignant, engrossing her readers in their depth and leaving them affected.
I was glued to every word.I bought the kindle version for myself, but my 11 year old daughter read it too and couldn't put it down. We both loved it. The author's word pull at your heart strings.
This book is clearly written by a Muslim woman of great faith, but is surely stands as an amazing testimony of poetry and longing that must resonate for anyone of any religion.
THE HEART TOUCHING POETRY . I felt in love with this book after reading the first poem of the book and I cried. Most of the poetry written in this book is for Almighty. When you read such books, you feel pure and connected to Lord
The publishers produce books for Muslim women to get their voices in print. Some superb, heartwarming poetry in this tome. The publisher states its books are for devoted Muslims, so that would explain the frequent Arabic words; provision of a vocabulary of Arabic words used would aid non-Mulsim readers.
