This book is riddled with character inconsistencies, plot holes and is just generally nonsensical, and I was left thinking "that makes no sense" more often than not.

The conflict of this book is the good ol' BIG MISUNDERSTANDING. And then, after fifteen years, they solve it in one phone call.

The book opens with the reunion between Tara and Mason, them hashing NOTHING out, him asking her on a date, to which she agrees. Then, he tries to kiss her, she gets emo and cancels their dinner date. Mason goes to his hotel bar, meets a hooker, invites her to his room. He doesn't sleep with her...but instead offers her a position at his new office???? He then sits in his suite and has a heart-to-heart with said hooker, telling her how he had been planning to propose to Tara tonight even though they'd JUST met again after fifteen years!

This is simply the opening and it already made no sense to me.

In their fifteen years apart, he NEVER EVER looks for her. And now that "fate" has brought them together, he's all ready and prepared to propose? What the fuck?

Tara also keeps telling the reader that he left her, never came back, never called...but she starts getting sappy over him the second she sees him again. Fifteen years of no contact or explanation, and they're both heart-eyeing one another. What?

Tara never tells Mason how his mother treats her, and that also made no sense. His mother talks shit to her but Tara still says nothing to Mason. Mason has already told Tara how he feels about his mother, that he avoids coming home because of her...and Tara avoids telling Mason how his mother treats her? How does that make any sense? She already knows he doesn't like his mother, so why isn't she telling him? What peace is there to keep? So stupid.

Then, they separate...and that, too, made no sense. Mason asked Tara to go with him and she said no because of what his mother said to her. In doing what his mother wanted and not going to Germany, she essentially chose Mason's mother over Mason. She chose to bow to the words and whims of a woman who never liked her over a man who she claims to love.

Mason tries calling her while he's away, but he only calls the ranch, not her home. He claims he doesn't want to because of the time difference...which makes no sense. He hasn't spoken to his girlfriend in A MONTH and he worries about the time difference? What? So he just calls her at work instead? Wtf? It's been a month and he still hasn't gotten through...and he still doesn't think to call her house? What about email? They couldn't exchange emails? Email addresses and sending emails was totally in fifteen years ago! Makes no sense.

Then, when he can't reach her and she hasn't heard from him...what do they both of them do? They go to his mother! Yes, the same mother that they BOTH know is classist, hates Tara and their relationship. Instead of going to his father, they both go to his mother. What the fuck? Where is the sense here? Tara claims she didn't ask Mason's father about Mason because she didn't want to bother him. Wtf? Mason claims he wasn't close to his father, that's why he didn't contact him instead...but wait what? What caused that? Why weren't they close? Just another convenient plot hole by the author. He's able to call his mother, the very reason he stays away from his home, to ask after Tara...but he can't call his father because they're not close? What the fuck???? This makes absolutely no sense!!

How did he not find some other way to contact her? He's a privileged man with an endless supply of wealth and resources at his fingertips...and he couldn't find some way to contact his girlfriend?? He's a twenty-four year old man and he chose, instead, to run away. She, on the other hand, spoke to Mason's father all that time and she didn't once ask after Mason? Wtf? She went, instead, to the woman who hates her???? Where is the sense?!

Then, his MOTHER, the same classist woman who never liked his girlfriend, hated his relationship and constantly thrust Chloe in his path, tells him that his girlfriend got engaged...and he doesn't think to vet this information? Instead of going back home and asking for an explanation from the woman he claims to love, the woman he was ready to marry, he believes his mother, a woman he KNOWS twists words, deceives and just outright lies, a woman he KNOWS isn't fond of his girlfriend in the first place!!

Their separation makes absolutely no sense. If I found out my significant other suddenly got engaged to someone else, I wouldn't be sitting around and wallowing. I'd contact them and ask WHAT THE FUCK MAN, especially if the person who told me that they'd gotten engaged was someone who never liked my SO in the first place, had actively thrust others in my path. Mason tries to find out nothing and simply never comes back. This is the same Mason who said he loved her, was ready to marry her. This is the same man who was also ready to propose the moment he saw her again. And...this is the same man who never bothered to look for her once in fifteen years. There's absolutely no consistency.

And, if the complete lack of sense and consistency wasn't bad enough, there's the rest. During their fifteen years apart, Mason has slept with others. He says he never "made love," that he "fucked." Tara, on the other hand, remained celibate. Or, at least that's what's implied. She says she "dated" but that's not what she was doing. She went out with guys but it was more like going out with friends. She paid her own at these dates and also made sure to tell the men that she was already "taken"...because she's still waiting around for Mason. Seriously. No joke.

“They were just dates, two people going out to dinner. I paid my own way a lot so there wasn’t any confusion. I had already experienced that once before. Besides, I always told them I was taken.”

“Taken? So you lied to them?”

“No, I was setting expectations,” I said with a grin. “And I was taken. All that time, even though I had left the ranch and North Carolina, my heart still belonged to Mason. I even remember telling some of them that if Mason ever showed up again that the dates were done and I would go back to him.”

She even makes a comment that it's "been so long" (sex), adding to the implication that she hasn't been with others. So, while Mason slept with others in the fifteen years, the author put Tara on ice.

Pathetic.

The author even has Tara sexually assaulted by another character. Mason's mother hires a guy named Jeremy to work at the ranch with the sole purpose of seducing Tara. Tara doesn't even pay attention to him so he accosts her instead, forcing himself on her. He goes no further than a kiss because he's stopped by someone else.

The author gets Mason to blame his mother for everything, but I wasn't buying it. He tells his mother that he lost years of happiness because of her. Uh...no. He lost it because of himself. He's the one who never tried to look for Tara, choosing instead to believe the words of a woman he knew hated Tara. It's not like he was some hormonal teenager under his mother's thumb. He was an independent twenty-four year old wealthy man who didn't once bother to look up his girlfriend or confirm the engagement story through other channels. He just took his mother's word for it.

First I would like to thank the author for this free arc copy an exchange for a review

I love how both Tara and mason only loved each other. Never was it any confusion about how deeply was their love connection.

I did not care for the history present parts it confusing to me.

Manson mother being the villain somehow works but makes me mad cause I just wanted to hit her.

I do love how mason tends to not be to overbared and how tara doesn't back down it's nice to read about a woman with a back bone.

Overall I would definitely read a sequel..............

This wasn't so bad. I actually enjoyed reading about Mason and Tara's relationship, though it was an obvious given that his mother played a major role in their breakup and subsequent fifteen year separation. I do feel like both should have known better and should have been more consiencious about keeping in touch. They weren't kids who relied on their parents, they were both adults involved in a mature sexual relationship, so please explain to me how they didn't have each others contact information! How the fuck did they contact one another during the months they were seeing each other?

Second Chance: Tara and Mason: Canyon Cove Billionaires Book 3 is by Lilian Rhodes. This third book is about getting a second chance at love. Will the second chance work or will love go out the window again.
Tara worked for the Abernathy Ranch and loved every minute of it. She was hoping to get the position of manager which she had worked very hard for. Then she learned that Mason Abernathy had returned home and he was getting the managerial position so he could “learn the business” which he would ultimately inherit from his Father. Tara was so upset that she went to the house to confront Mr. Abernathy about the job. When the maid left her at the door of the room where the Abernathys were, she heard them arguing and blatantly listened. They were arguing over whether or not Mason would take the job and stay at the ranch. When Mason suddenly left the room, he startled her and she almost fell at his feet. After she insulted him and he left, Tara spoke to Mr. Abernathy and learned he didn’t expect his son to stay long and then the job was hers. Somewhat mollified, she left.
Mason fell in love with Tara when he caught her and he wooed her in his own fashion during his stay on the ranch. However, he left the ranch six months later and left Tara. When he tried to call, she couldn’t come to the phone and ultimately his Mother told Mason that Tara was engaged. Believing this, he stayed away for sixteen years.
Now, Mason is back. He still feels the same about Tara and is determined not to be ignored this time. However, Tara does not want to fall for him again only to have her heart broken. Mason has his work cut out for him. Will he manage to get Tara back?
The book is very good and well-written. Lilian has thrown in enough obstacles to make you wonder if they are going to get together or not. Can Tara forgive Mason?

No instant love but instant hate which every girl finds is somewhat attractive. Maybe you can put off the no talking or taking his mothers word for it and chalk it up to youth but I would have asked more questions. There is a lot to say about being vulnerable and young.

DELICIOUSLY SWEET, SERIOUSLY SEDUCTIVE, COMPLETELY CAPTIVATING AND DELIGHTFULLY ENTERTAINING !!!
Title: Second Chance
Series: Canyon Cove
Designation: Book Three of Series, Standalone Novel, No Cliffhanger
Author: Liliana Rhodes
My Rating: FIVE DELECTABLY SWEET STARS *****
Wow! Second Chance is the third offering in Liliana Rhodes' delightfully entertaining Canyon Cove Series and what a treat to the senses it is! I loved it! If you're a fan of superbly written and heartfelt contemporary romance featuring a strong male and female lead, then this is the book for you. No wimps here and a wonderful story to boot! Rhodes has once again dazzled us with her remarkable talent and given us a novel more than worthy of a five star rating. I was totally captivated from the first page until the last and would highly recommend it to anyone who loves a great romance that teases the reader with a gradual seductive burn and builds it into a roaring blaze of sensuality, passion, tenderness, hope and love. The narrative is extremely well crafted and well written in the first person with alternating his and her points of view. It also includes intermittent flashbacks from both lead characters during their past relationship and is done flawlessly. It's fascinating to see and understand the different perspective of the same events as seen through the eyes of each character and heartbreaking to watch the resulting consequences. The dialogue is smart, realistic and at times humorous. The characters are very well developed, captivating, engaging, believable and very relatable. I very much enjoyed the banter between the two lead characters. It was both sexy and entertaining. The story evoked a wide range of emotions for me. I found it to be sweet, sensual, arousing, tender, passionate, heartbreaking, heartwarming and extremely romantic. Rhodes expertly combines these elements into a delicious, seductive and realistic romance that is sure to tease, tantalize and titillate your senses.

Beautiful horsewoman and trainer Tara Murphy gave up on romance and relationships fifteen years ago at the tender age of twenty two. That's not to say that she's given up on love. Oh no, she could never quite accomplish that feat. You see, she did fall hopelessly in love fifteen years ago, deeply and passionately, and has never stopped remembering her first and only love, Mason Abernathy. He made a promise to return to her. He broke not only his promise but broke her heart as well - and to this day, it has never healed. She left her job and her home in North Carolina as a result of her broken heart, no longer able to bear the heartache but never gave up hope that maybe one day, he would find her. She's settled in Canyon Cove for the last five years and although she has a wonderful job and a loyal group of friends, it still does not fill the empty void in her heart and soul. Her hope has grown dim - until now. But does she have the strength to allow that hope to be rekindled???

Businessman and rancher Mason Abernathy left his boyhood home in North Carolina fifteen years ago for a business opportunity in Germany and never returned. He lost the love of his life and now wanders aimlessly acquiring nothing but more wealth. He has no home now but rather lives from one hotel to another with no connection and no love. She was not only the love of his life but was the home for his heart and without her, he lost more than he ever imagined. Only when a serendipitous meeting of the two lost lovers occurs does Mason realize what he truly lost from his life and what he could regain by convincing her to return to his arms. But can the past ever be truly forgotten and forgiven??? Will they be able to build a bridge of trust and love from the past to their present??? Will Mason be able to convince Tara to give him and their love a "second chance"??? I'll never tell. No spoilers from me but I will say this....Beautiful, sassy, stubborn and independent horsewoman-check! Wealthy, handsome and very determined rancher/business-check! A selfish and scheming mother-check! Heartbreaking angst, heated attraction, unforgettable passion and sweet romance-check! A second chance at love-Maybe! That and a whole lot more! It made me believe in love again. There is no greater compliment I can give than that statement alone. Fabulous entertainment and an awesome read!

As the title says, this book is about a couple who get a "second chance" at their love. At the start of the novel, Tara Murphy and Mason Abernathy see each other for the first time in 15 years. The two were once a strong couple in love, but things (mainly people) happened that caused a huge misunderstanding which lead to the end of their relationship.
The book takes us through both the beginning and the reuniting of the couple, so you get a complete picture of their romance. I liked that especially because it allowed me to understand everything that lead to their initial breakup.
I loved Mason. Not only is he gorgeous, he's really sweet. The scenes where he picks the perfect flowers and later the perfect gift for Tara demonstrate this. He also uses his wealth to help people, even strangers, in life-changing ways. How amazing is that!?!
Tara had her admirable qualities as well. She stayed true to her love for Mason for the entire 15 years they were apart. Any dates she had were told she was taken. That is true devotion. I do wish she wasn't so moody in many of the couple's present-day scenes. She seemed to go hot/cold pretty fast on what she wanted from Mason (elated to have a date, then angrily turns him down; hears Mason say what she calls the "words I had dreamed about hearing," then responds with "I'm not ready for this").
The conclusion of Mason and Tara's story was quite satisfying (HEA). I'm typically not a fan of second-chance romances, but the author does a fantastic job with this one. It is worth the read.

After years of being away from the only man that every healed her heart, Tara going into work at the barn and finds Mason there. After all the years of dreaming of seeing him and what their lives could have, how could he just turn up? And what has he been doing for the last 15 years? Why did he never come back to Tara like he promised? But most importantly will they both get a second chance at true life changing love?
I am a huge fan of anything Liliana Rhodes writes and this book is no different. My heart hurt so much for Tara, after all she had been through trying to resist Mason, and then after she feel in love with him, having it ripped away from her. Mason is the type of character that is so easy to fall in love with, although he is rich he uses his money to help people that need it. The love he has always carried for Tara shows through in everything he does. He is the type of guy every woman dreams of. The story line in the book is so amazing and hooked me so quickly that I found my self hoping that things would work out for them, I felt truly invested as I was reading. Amazing job and I can't wait to see what Liliana Rhodes comes out with next, I hope my heart can take it!

This is a heartwarming story of misunderstanding and manipulation between two people who was truly in love. What I liked even more about this story was that the sexy bits isn't all there is to it. There is so much more to this book and dynamic story. Mason was a true alpha-male, who saw what he like and went after it with determination. Tara was a sweet and loving person with a large heart for her family. They said opposite attracts with this example as they fell in love with the intention of staying together for life. Mason left on a business investment meeting in Germany without returning. Tara remained at his father ranch for awhile longer until an altercation orchestrated by Mason's mother(THE DEVIL) who kept intercepting and manipulating any communication against their relationship. It took fifteen years to meet again by chance and start over. I have to say Tara was too hard on Mason at times with the past hurt/obstacles. I enjoyed reading about the other characters in this serie and only hope to read about Jackie (bed hair) and Brent, Gideon and Becca(freckles). Overall, a great story and looking for the next one!!!

How long will you wait for your lost love? For fifteen years Tara has held on for her lost love Mason even though he has never returned to her like he promised. Mason has been traveling the world since he "lost" Tara. When he finds her working in Canyon Cove he believes that the can go back to where they left off fifteen years before. Tara has other plans since Mason hurt her and she will make him work for love again. These two still have a strong chemist that seems to be as if they never left each other's side. I loved that Tara was strong and she didn't just fall in line to what Mason wanted and also I loved that Mason had patients and what he did for his new assistant and her family made me love him more. Hopefully we will get some more stories in the Canyon Cove series because it seems that there are a lot of more characters that deserve their HEA.

Sweet Romance Worth Waiting For

Mason is a cocky young billionaire, son of a man who operates a prestigious horse farm. He comes home from college to take the manager's position on the farm, a job his father insists on. Unfortunately, it is the job Tara has worked years to get. A situation just bred for fireworks, sparks fly. But Mason wants to turn those sparks of anger into something much warmer, much closer to his heart. A relationship starts to build, but circumstances get in the way, and misunderstanding may keep this blossoming love from ever developing into something everlasting. I loved both these characters. Mason may be cocky but he has a heart of gold. Tara is down to Earth, the girl next door type who loves family and home. It was heartbreaking to read about the obstacles keeping them apart. This was a great story.

Trusting the second time around is harder than the first.
Sixteen years ago Tara and Mason was a couple for six months. They fell in love and thought they would be together for life. But Mason left for an opportunity in Germany and never came back. Not long after Tara left her job and Mason’s family’s ranch where she had met Mason. Sixteen years later and a chance meeting and she knows her feeling never changed but the hurts still there. Could she trust him again? Miscommunication and manipulation form someone kept mason away from ever coming back to Tara. Will the truth of what really happened come to light or will the past interfere with any future they may have together? Loved this well written and self-contained story.

Wonderful story on second chance on love. Liliana Rhodes can write a story like no other. You have the difference in classes *wealthy and working class*. The witchy mother who drives a wedge between the couple for 15 years but of course Love wins out.

Tara has a very big heart and while Mason broke it to pieces she picked up and moved on but did she,
Mason the hottie moved to Germany to learn a better way to Ranch and always intended to come back to Tara but of course the Mother from hell got in the way. Instead of settling for someone less than his true love he wanders from hotel to hotel, working but never finding his heart of home.

He comes to Canyon Cove and finds both....His Heart and his Home. Great book.

Fabulously sexy second chance romance. Tara and Mason met and fell in love on his families' ranch. She was working her way up to manage the ranch and training of the horses when Mason returned home and his father gave him her promotion. Tara never expected to fall in love with Mason but Mason had dreams beyond the ranch so when he leaves and never comes back, well, Tara is forced to move on. As Tara is now settled in Cedar Cove, she never expects to cross paths with Mason in her new job. Mason is shocked to see Tara in the horse barn which dredges up so many questions. Can these two overcome the hurt feelings and misunderstandings of their 15 year separation?

I received an ARC eBook in exchange for an honest review. This is a MUST-READ book for fans of second chance romance! I absolutely LOVED this book!! Mason and Tara's story was so beautiful and sweetly emotional. I was swept up in their story as their chance encounter brought up memories of the past. Written in alternating points of views with memories of their shared past as they each wrestled with the pain of being apart. Liliana Rhodes is definitely a MUST-READ author of mine! I highly recommend this book and series!!

I recieved this books an ARC for an honest review. I have to say that I loved it. There were times that I wanted to smack Mason, for being... well a man. It was a sweet, loving, sassy read. I loved that there was just enough heat to be a little naughty, enough drama to make it interesting. Tara is a very relatable charactor, I'm sure we have all had lost loves that we wished we could go back and try again. This book gives you a piece of that. Great job Miss Rhodes. Now time to read the others in this series!! Thank you for the ARC.

This was a fun, beautiful, second chance love story!! Mason and Tara had fallen in love 15 years ago. Events, circumstances, and a conniving mother kept them apart! A chance encounter brings them together again. Mason knows he still feels the same and he sees that Tara does too! His goal is to convince her they are meant to be together! Can the hurts of the past be forgotten and can a second chance happen for these two? Ms Rhodes writes a beautiful story of second chances! Laughter, sadness, and love! This story just made me feel good! Don't miss the chance of reading this book!

Tara Murphy and Mason Abernathy have been in love with each other since he caught her in his arms 15 years ago outside of his fathers office. but they haven't actually been together. Hurt feelings manipulated by outside forces have kept them apart. but will their own stubbornness stop them from reconciling. Its a journey of love and rediscovery.
