A crime like no other... Detroit, Michigan. The rainy winter has been harsh and prolonged for this industrial town where the death toll climbs at night. But for Homicide Detective Maxine Jonas, murder holds an unlikely appeal. Motor City is her town and she knows how to work the streets to solve a case. Perhaps a little too well…
A brassy woman who'll drink you under the table at any hour, Maxine is put on temporary leave from the force to straighten herself out, spend time with her dying mother, and otherwise get her affairs in order.
One night after returning home, she hears her cell phone ringing from down the hall. Unnerved that her cell wasn't on her, she follows the sound into her laundry room where she discovers a dead body. The man has been butchered. Disturbing words have been carved into his flesh. And the call is coming from her desk at the 12th Precinct.
There's a killer out there and he's pulling Max into his sick game.
As the case unfolds, evidence keeps turning up all around her. The killer is sucking her in, framing her more tightly day by day, until Max becomes the prime suspect.
There's only one way to clear her name. She must find the killer. The hunt leads her deep into her dark past. Soon she understands that untangling herself from the game could cost her. And the price is her life.
Great book, kept me wondering what was going to happen. The character emotions are written. I just wish I could read the rest of the books. When I went back to buy them, they were no longer available. Very disappointing. I hope the Author re-releases them again someday.
(3.5 Stars) This is a difficult review to write because the materials in this novel is so dark, disturbed and not my typical type of read. "Slipping" features detective, Maxine Jonas, an alcoholic, self deprecating policewoman who merely exists from one drink to another. At first, I really did not like Maxine. However, as her background began to be revealed I began to understand somewhat why she acted the way she did. Unfortunately, it did not make me like her anymore than before.
Maxine's abusive mother is in a facility dying of cancer. Maxine is thousands of dollars behind in her mother's care, and forcibly placed on administrative leave until she dries out in Alcoholics Anonymous. Then, the unthinkable happens; someone breaks into Maxine's home and leaves a murdered body. The body happens to be the child abuser from across the street. As other detectives get involved, including Maxine's former partner, Travis, it is clear that the killer is messing with her.
Maxine's long time boy-toy, fireman, Asa continues to tolerate her standoffish and detrimental behavior he inches his way closer into her heart but to what end? This read has plenty of intrigue, suspense and twists and turns to keep the most skeptical on the edge of their seat. Unfortunately, the materials itself is too dark for me and there were never any moments of hope or levity leaving me with a less than well balanced read. Quite honestly, I will not be moving on in this series. It is just not for me. However, it you enjoy police dramas with intrigue and do not mind dark characters and a dark storyline, this series could be the one for you.
This book is a crime thriller with a chill to it. This book make's you think through it. You need to read every detail given or your going to miss something. Mind tingling.
At first was a little put off with the main charter Max and her drinking problem.....BUT as the story continues you learn why she's got this problem and how it came about. It's full of WTH & How did that happen moments. It's one surprise after another and none so far fetched that you wouldn't believe they could really happen.
The charters are strong and you get just the right amount of description of them to picture them in your mind. This book pretty much get's right into the story and describes things as it goes giving you that in the moment feel.
When I first started reading 'Slipping', I couldn't believe how Max could deliberately be on a path of self destruction. But once the storyline started playing out, it all made sense. Full of thrilling scenarios, unbelievable memories and characters that surprised me. Max made a great lead, unstable and unpredictable, but great. Asa was one of those men you can't help but love. He endured a lot of heartache for love. An overall great read. I look forward to reading more of this series.
