Will Fleeing the Scottish Highlands Only Leave Her in More Danger?
Lady Rowena Kinnaird may be the heiress to a Highland earldom, but she's never felt good enough--not for her father, not for the man she thought she'd marry, not for God. But after a shocking attack, she's willing to be forever an outcast if it means escaping those threatening her life.
Brice Myerston, the Duke of Nottingham, has never been one to shy away from manor-born ladies, yet the last thing he needs is the distraction of the newly introduced Lady Rowena. He has enough on his plate having recently come into possession of a rare treasure for which many would kill, yet those around him seem intent on pairing him with this desperate but beguiling girl.
Rowena is reluctant to marry this notorious flirt. And when she learns that Brice is mixed up in some kind of questionable business with a stolen treasure, she fears she'll end up in more danger than she fled.

❝Perhaps they were none of them more than what their darkest moments made them...and how they emerged from it when day came again.❞
This is not a fun, swoony romance. This book is heavy. It's rough at times. It deals with some uncomfortable things that most people don't like to read about, but nonetheless something that needs to be addressed. It isn't the deepest and most excruciating book with this topic I've ever read, but I didn't expect much depth in this form at all from this author, so it deeply impacted me.
This book talks about love in a way you don't hear it discussed too often, but it's the reality. Love isn't just an emotion you feel. Love is a choice. Love is a sacrifice. Brice chooses to love Rowena and obey the Lord, and slowly he helps her heal from her brokenness and trauma and learn to love him back and, more importantly, love the Lord.
In the first book, Brice was a bit of a more lighthearted character. Kind of a shameless flirt. But he is given loads more character and depth. He was a flawed man, like everyone, but he had a deep longing to do what the Lord was calling him to do. I loved his character arc and I think he's my favorite Roseanna love interest so far 🥺🥰
Rowena, on the other hand, was a fragile and broken person; she had no hope for any more joy in life. I loved seeing how she let down her walls and let Brice in. She had amazing character growth.
Their romance was my favorite aspect of the book. They argued and they talked and slowly yet surely came to love each other. It was beautiful. Turned on the waterworks fr when they had those cute moments 🥹
❝Pay attention, Protect her. Listen. Stay with her. Love her.❞
**content and trigger warnings** the main character was r@ped before the book begins, but she has lots of flashbacks to the moment (always ending before the actual deed is done). It is talked about a lot as one of the main plot points is her healing from the trauma. Her father beats her (never on page) and did the same to her mother, who committed suicide before the book starts. SPOILERS!!! the main character turns out to be carrying the child of the man who violated her, which leads to a lot more talks about the sort of thing. A maid is violated and then killed off page (they just hear her screams). There is a crib death of an infant, also off page. Please be cautious about reading this if you have past trauma in any of these instances! Stay safe and ily all <333
I'm going to get straight to the point and say that Roseanna White's writing is superb. This book was a delight to read from beginning to end. I liked the first book in the series, but wow... this one was amazing.
Because of the continued suspenseful thread (concerning the curse of the Fire Eyes Diamonds) that spreads throughout the series, there isn't full closure regarding everything that happens throughout the plot... but instead, the closure is all about the developing relationship between Brice (the Duke of Nottingham) and his mysterious Scottish Lady Rowena, his surprising new duchess. They get married at the beginning of the novel as strangers to each other, away from all of his friends and contemporaries--which shocks most of them once they return to England. This sudden marriage is brought on for a number of reasons; deceitful ones, heartbreaking ones, and noble ones.
And I have to say, seeing this particular relationship develope as it does, was an utter delight. I love to write swoon-worthy heroes into my own books of course, but I also especially love falling in love alongside someone else's heroine as well when I read a book. it doesn't ALWAYS happen, but it sure happened while reading The Reluctant Duchess. ❤️
Just . . . Brice. Why does he have to be so amazing? I love how respectful, kind and gentle he was with Rowena, giving her her space, but not letting her distance herself too much and fall back into her self-consciousness.
I had a hard time relating\understanding Rowena a lot of the time, maybe just because I've never dealt with the issues she did.
The storyline was more focused on Brice and Rowena than the Fire eyes, which I kinda liked, but kinda didn't.
Oh, and did I mention how gorgeous that cover is? Swoon! I adore it.
The reason I docked a star star was for content reasons. There was some stuff that made me uncomfortable throughout. Some of it was just adult issues - realistic, but not meant for younger audiences. But other stuff I feel like should have been cut.
Recommended for ages 18+ for adult themes and issues such as
Oh my heavens. This was just so good. I really did not want this story to end… I want to see more of Brice and Rowena! I loved Brice in book one, and I was not disappointed in his story. My heart is all in a puddle.♡ Brice is such a charming, sweet gentleman. Rowena came into their marriage carrying deep burdens and heartache, and Brice really was the perfect man for her. Though he has his own struggles, he was tender and protective and didn’t let Rowena retreat too deep into her shell. I really loved the depth of his relationship with God, and how he grew from the “darling of London society” into a more mature version of himself by the end. Rowena is a complex character; her story marked with years of difficulty and hardship. She starts out so timid and downhearted, but she slowly gets some of her Highlander spirit back through the safety of Midwynd Park and the gentle spiritual prodding of Brice and other characters. The conversations she and Brice would share were some of my favorite parts of the book. I love how they didn't let their negative feelings fester and create discord between them, but were honest with how they felt and worked to make it better. The Fire Eyes plot takes a bit of a backseat to Brice and Rowena’s growing relationship, but I really enjoyed the part it did play and how it contributed to the development of their characters and marriage. Though the suspense was not quite as intense as in The Lost Heiress, it still had me turning the pages to see what would happen next!♡
I have mixed feelings about this book. On one hand, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm not a huge romance fan, but if there's one type of romance I like, it's between a husband and wife who are learning to love each other (as opposed to unmarried people falling in love...I don't know, it's just me). Brice, being my favorite character from The Lost Heiress, was still my favorite character. I enjoyed reading how he learned to listen and his wife learned to love. It was really a sweet story.
Throughout the whole book, it seemed like the characters regularly sought God and prayed, which I appreciated. Some of the characters were evidently stronger in faith than others, which I thought gave a realistic aspect.
However. When I think back on the book, the main thread that stands out to me is the marriage bed. Whether it was Rowena being physically abused by her supposed lover or her learning to trust again, this theme just wasn't in my comfort zone, even though it was done fairly discreetly. For this reason, I would not recommend this book to girls under twenty.
The continued thread of the Fire Eyes was alluring. There is something about them that are enticing and exciting. In this, though, there is a lot of discussion about curses and the spiritual realm. I don't think I particularly disagreed with the author on this, because the conclusion I found was that there are spiritual battles being fought (which I believe is Biblical) and that the curse was not a curse of superstition, but a curse of greed. The way the author brought this about, though, was slightly confusing so I might not have fully grasped her intentions.
So, those two things pull my rating down to three stars--which I realize is just my personal preference and convictions.
*I received this book in exchange of my honest review from Bethany House*
A Dashing Gentleman, a broken Lady, a marriage of convenience and then the threat and danger of the Fire Eyes all added to a captivating read.
For the Fire Eyes story, I would recommend reading the series in order to get the full background of that as well as all the characters involved.
Brice Myerston - what a dreamy gentleman, who strives to do whatever Gods wants from him, even if it is not the most obvious or clear decisions for those close to him. Though he always strives to do what is right, he still had his faults and I loved how he realised this and took steps to change. I think the most eye opening event for him was with regards to his childhood friend who had some very delusional fantasies due to things he said to her/the way he treated her (and other women).
Rowena - what a broken young girl. I was heartbroken for her, thought her naive when she trusted someone which she could not trust and loved seeing her find herself and turning to God in choices she had to make. I also enjoyed how God through Brice's actions showed her what it meant to be loved unconditionally.
The villains - there were a few, some from Rowena's past, some from Brice's and one delusional young women. There was one villain who at the end had a terrible experience, which created some compassion towards them, however, I think they will allow this experience to create more bitterness and hatred towards others than change them.
I'm excited for book 3 and to see who the actual thief is.
Narrator: The Narrator provided another entertaining story and did a great job between the French, Scottish and English voices.
To say Roseanna White is one of my favorite authors is probably an understatement—Every one of her books is packed with amazing storytelling, complex characters, and a thrilling journey!
...And this beautiful book is no exception! (In fact, it’s probably my most favorite of her books!)
Rowena is so broken and hurting, but getting to see her journey of faith and healing is immensely powerful!
And Brice! He is so...good! I have a lot of favorite things about him, but one of my most favorite things is his sense of humor! He is dealing with such a serious situation, and has so many crazy things happening in his life, but his humor is amazing in the middle of all that!
In this book, Roseanna White addresses a horrendous topic with such grace and hope, and it is an amazing pleasure to read such a complex and intriguing story that also has the most incredible background of faith and God’s healing power above all.
I’m not going to give away any more of the book, but trust me—YOU NEED TO READ THIS BOOK!
5 STARS!!!
(Oh, and did I mention it is partly set in Scotland?!—so, yeah, automatic points for that! 😉)
Note: It does contain some mature elements (an attack and some gruesome images), and normally I might take away a star because of that, but with how impressive this book is overall, I just can’t do it! Just remember, probably better for a more mature audience.
In "The Reluctant Duchess," Roseanna M. White combines the glamorous aesthetic of Downton Abbey, the cultural flair of the Scottish Highlands, and a tender marriage of convenience romance into a gripping narrative.
From the opening lines, this book takes hold of the heart and doesn't relinquish it until the final page! Raw. Poignant. Emotional. The story begins in a quagmire of heartache but ends before a horizon of hope.
If you're in the mood for an absorbing period drama, allow me to introduce The Reluctant Duchess!
📚 Ladies of the Manor Series 📖 Book 1 - The Lost Heiress 📖 Book 2 - The Reluctant Duchess
When I first finished reading this book, I thought the content made it a 2 or 3 star book, but after I've thought about it a lot, and considering the fact that a lot of my Goodreads friends will not agree with me ... I don't think the content was that bad.
Yes, a girl was raped. But no real details were given and it happened pre-story. Brice and Rowena both think about the marriage bed and all that, but ... I don't feel that they ever took it too far. And Brice and Rowena developed an awesome, sweet relationship over the course of the story.
There were so many things to this book besides the content!
The way God works through Brice in such show-stopping, incredible ways.
Rowena's journey in faith.
The subplot with the Fire Eyes and all involved.
Redemption. Grace. Mercy. Letting God be your guide.
It was just a really good book. It dealt with tough issues in an incredible way, and many of the characters - Brice especially - showed a powerful, inspirational faith in God. I think the good outweighs the evil in this case. And I think the story was told with as much delicacy as could be mustered.
That said, it's definitely not for younger teens or immature readers. Still, I think it's a powerful story for a Christian young woman to read if she can handle it.
Also, the Scottish aspect was absolutely fascinating, I loved the characters (especially Brice), and the plot was quite intense & dramatic. All pluses for me. I hope to read book 3 soon!
Those two words pretty much sum up my feelings about The Reluctant Duchess by Roseanna White.
Brice Myerston, the Duke of Nottingham, is a “hero of heroes”. Charming. Godly. A man who prays. A man who listens to God. A man who rescues. A man who protects. He’s not perfect, but his flaws – few though they may be – make him all the more endearing. Rowena Kinnaird, his new duchess, is a heroine who immediately wins readers’ fierce loyalty. And then Brice’s. My heart broke for the abuse she had suffered, perhaps the worst sort of abuse a woman can endure, but I cheered for her as well. Because she is stronger than she believes, and it’s her heart and spirit which define her – not what a cowardly abuser did to her. As she begins to realize this for herself and as she begins to flourish under Brice’s steady affection, Rowena wins her own loyalty.
Unimaginable heartache collides with charming wit to create a mood that is the right blend of both. The settings, the suspense, the romance, the characters – all of these elements immersed me in the story and kept me captivated from start to finish. Roseanna White expertly pens an exquisite and powerful reminder that God “never forgets us, even when we feel He has.” And that no matter how storm-ridden our current circumstances, the true adventure lies in anticipating how He will eventually turn the clouds to sunshine. A beautiful story, rich in setting and vibrant with characters, The Reluctant Duchess belongs on every historical fiction fan’s must-read list!
(I received a copy of this book in exchange for only my honest review.)
As with all Roseanna White books, the research, vernacular, verisimilitude and historical canvas are spot on.
This is an intricate plot involving the continuation of bloodlines, jewels that hold the key to heritages and familial webs. Its core is a marriage of convenience between a woman, Rowena, who could find herself out of a name and influence by the arrival of a new heir and Brice, the Lord of Nottingham.
Painted against a backdrop of severe abuse, compassion and slowly-growing love, The Reluctant Duchess is deep inspirational fiction that echoes the Hosea and Gomer story.
While the subject matter of the novel may be strong for some CBA readers, Brice's grace and Rowena's goodness emulate some of the finer tenets of Biblical charity and calling.
My one regret is that due to the intricate outside plot affecting their marriage, we did not spend as much time with Brice and Rowena as this romantic would have hoped.
But, for a dashing hero ( he really has some charming lines) and a sweet as a bird heroine (who is frail but strong), this couple is well-met and sits lovingly in White's impeccably written setting.
This book was tough, no doubt about it. It tackled the tough topic of rape, but the author handled it like the pro she is. I especially enjoyed seeing Rowena discover just how sweet a romance could be for a gal who’d been sexually abused. The careful, gentle sweetness of Brice was exactly what Rowena needed, and their romance gave me hope that others found in similar circumstances as Rowena would be able to find healing and hope in the Lord for their future and not completely give up on romance because of their abuser’s cruelty. There is still hope, folks, and this book shows that off beautifully.
The themes of brokenness, hope, trust, and love were woven together without seams into an exquisite tapestry. I recommend this book for older teens and up.
Content: mention of suicide, mention of rape/rape as a theme (not shown on the pages), alcohol
4.5 stars While I didn't "love, love, love" it quite the way I did the first book (this one is more heavy on the romance), it is still a good, solid story. The focus is mainly on Rowena and Brice's hasty marriage and less on the ongoing saga of the Fire Eyes diamonds. I loved the historical feel of the setting and the well-researched Scottish flavor.
This second of the Ladies of the Manor series continues the family jewelry thread that began in the first novel. The main characters are Brice, the Duke of Nottingham, and Lady Rowena from the Scottish Highlands. It was a lovely novel and I especially enjoyed the Scottish language inserted into the book.
And the suspense continues! This book is such a great follow up to The Lost Heiress. I love Brice and Rowena's story. Then the story continues in Book 3 with Ella. I can hardly wait!
Roseanna M. White is a master at weaving a dangerous mystery and a swoon worthy romance! This is an awesome second book in her Ladies of the Manor series. (There is a lot of back story in the first book so I would recommend you read that book first.)
The story of the Duke of Nottingham continues in this book. I love his character! He's a swoon worthy hero for sure! :D Although some of the character traits that have made him so well liked are now working against him. He's so well liked in fact (especially with the ladies) that he has a hard time proving to his new wife that he's never been in love with any other girl. I love the fact that even though he's a really good man and person, the author shows where there is still room for him to change and grow.
And then there is Rowena! Oh my! She will grab your heart! Her circumstances are so dire that she agrees to marry this man that she doesn't know and leave the place she has grown up in. The poor girl is so broken. I love the progression of her healing and restoration in this story. She has to learn how to trust and love again. The process may be painful but the end result is beautiful!
The mystery and danger from the red diamonds continues in this book along with the schemes of Lady Catherine and her brother. I like how the plot moves quickly and makes you question who you think the villains are. There is plenty of adventure, romance, and mystery to keep you glued to the pages of this book!
*Thanks to Bethany House and NetGalley for a complimentary copy of this book for review purposes. I was not required to post a positive review and all opinions stated are my own. *
*Sighs* Wow. This tested my relationship with my Heavenly Father, but for the good 😊 What a story! I loved it! Granted, it has difficult subjects like rape and abuse that are talked about and are dealt with by one of the main characters and it could be a trigger warning, just to let you know.
Now, with that said, I love how Roseanne M. White makes sure her characters grow. I was a bit disappointed that the drama and mystery about the jewels were not mentioned as much as in the first one, but I'm okay with that because Brice's and Rowena's relationship with each other and God was so raw and beautiful. Learning to give and receive love, true love, that isn't merely an emotion or an extra beat of the heart, but love that is patient and kind. Love that does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude (although we may be😅). Love that does not insist on it's own way, nor resentful or irritable. The kind of love that is given by God and inspired by Him. We are all loved by Him no matter what we've done, or what was done to us. God is love and cares for every single one of us. 😁🙏
It was such a great story. ☺️ I laughed, I cried! It moved me, Bob. (iykyk😉).
Dialogue was great, but hard to understand sometimes because of the Scottish dialect, but I'll get over it. Characters, again, spot on. They made mistakes, they grew, and they were realistic. Plot could have been a smidge more interesting, but it was nerve-wracking and kept me on the edge of my seat, nonetheless. Descriptions and imagery were👌🏼.
Ummmm . . . excuse me, Roseanna M. White. Who gave you permission to sTOMP ON MY HEART yet again??
A short review because I'm feeling lazy:
1) Brice freaking Myerston. MY HEART IS A PUDDLE. It's actually a problem that I want to marry basically all of White's male protagonists but like, I don't care? Brice's faith and gentle understanding and patience brought me near tears on multiple occasions. I want to marry a man like him. (Pssh, of course he's not fictional. Don't crush my dreams. :P)
2) White handles the theme of abuse with such delicacy and honesty. Dear Rowena's story broke my heart yet filled me with sweet hope in the end. I admire the author so much.
3) ALL THE SCOTTISH THINGS YUS
4) Everyone is afraid of Brook and amuses me to no end.
5) Most of Brice's friends are jerks to him. They need to chill.
6) Rowena and Brice's love story makes me cry.
7) THE FREAKING WRITING STYLE!!!
8) Roseanna M. White is the goddess of the historical fiction world. Change my mind.
9) The romance is a little (ahem) Awkward to read about because it involves a married couple, thus the one star I deducted. It's never gross or overly detailed or anything . . . but it's obviously a very private thing and I'm not the intended audience. :P
After reading and loving the first book in this series, The Lost Heiress, I truly don't know why it took me this long to read The Reluctant Duchess. I won't be making that mistake with the last book, as I've already started A Lady Unrivaled. ;)
I absolutely loved The Reluctant Duchess. It was one of those books where I did not want to stop reading and I was just captured by the story. There were some very sad/painful moments, but also ones of joy/happiness. I liked the main characters and their love story was sweet. The way he treated her was amazing.
The ending was great and I'm curious to see how the series will end. I definitely recommend The Reluctant Duchess, but be sure to read The Lost Heiress first as the stories are connected.

This book has landed my feelings into a muddle. Every turn and character has made we yearn to describe it all. Rowena and Brice's love was born of tragedy and brutal honesty. (Well, in some parts.)
This novel by Roseanna lived up to all her others. It was sweet and refreshing but also deep and prodding. I adore the Edwardian setting as well, which made our marriage of convenience plot likeable and then lovable to me. We got to see our characters deal with physical and emotional trauma that smashed my heart but then I got to pick my heart back up as Rowena and Brice overcame the past. And I loved that the Fire Eyes made a reappearance! (Love my mystery!!)
Brice was such a different man from book one. He portrayed himself as 'charming' or 'perfect' and I loved how Rowena made him confront his own battles he had internally. Rowena was an immensely complicated and beautiful character. She grew to stop fighting herself and others around her with her thoughts and emotions. And then she overcame the unknown with love and strength. Also Lilias, Lady Pratt, the Abbotts also made this book solid.
Compared to the first in the series I gotta say this one was way better then I expected. At the beginning I was a little skeptical because of the first book and because of the Scottish dialect but little by little this book conquered me with the development of characters and the faith this character have in the Lord and especially how trusting Him may change your life forever.
Rowena is the daughter of a very strong noble clan of Scotland and all her life she was the victim of cruelties made by her father with the purpose to make her more strong but when her supposed fiancee rapes her, Rowena feels worthless and abandoned by God.But when Brice a man of faith meets Rowena he finds himself marrying her because he believes God gave him Rowena as his wife to protect and cherish.
Now both of them will discover the true power of love and God by bringing two different people in a relationship that they will teach them many lessons. I liked that even if Rowena struggles with issues like fear, believing totally in God and becoming a good wife for Brice, the author does not make Brice the perfect knight. Like Rowena, Brice has also issues like pride letting go of it and learning to love and accept his wife with all of her baggage.
I love how from strangers trough God they fell in love and become better persons and renew their faith in the Lord. I always smiled at Brice's humor and how Rowena does not follow for his charms. I like the way Stella becomes so obsessed for the duke because of his flirtations. Here I think God showed him the consequence of flirting with women.
This book had a lot of lessons of life and I disagree with some Christians that a book should show only the bright parts. I think the fact that the author put the rape and then the child make it more realistic then rainbows and roses. I liked that the author did not sugared the consequence of the rape and also I think the most important was the fact that from a terrifying and ugly event of life, God took it in his hands and transformed in something beautiful . And I think that was what the author tried to transmit us readers.
The Reluctant Duchess is the second novel in Roseanna White's Ladies Of the Manor Trilogy. We first met Brice, the Duke of Nottingham in The Lost Heiress, book one. He now has possession of the Tiger eyes, a perfect pair of red diamonds. On a trip to his lands in Scotland he is maneuvered into marrying Rowena a Chieftan's daughter. Rowena is a broken woman who was recently attacked by a young Lord who only wants her title. The Reluctant Duchess is a tale of love and betrayal. I loved how Rowena is changed by the love of a good man. It shows how only G-d's love is perfect, and that we need to listen to that still, small voice. The plot moves along quickly and I really did not want to put it down. It was lovely visiting with Brook and Stafford once again. Anyone who loves Upstairs Downstairs or Downton Abbey will adore The Ladies of the Manor series. I was given this book by Netgalley for review purposes, but all opinions are my own.
I loved the beginning of this book so much. Having not read the first book, it was a little confusing at first, with all the nicknames and titles and changing view points. But it picked up so quickly that I found myself doing the "just one more page... chapter" dance til 2 am when I finally felt I could pause and sleep.
Things were starting to get good. I liked that the book dealt with real issues and real fears and that Rowena was honest in situations most people might plead the 5th in.
Then things started to shift. Brice went from being patient and understanding to over the top doting. And Rowena responded in anger and resentment that he apparently thought her incompetent. What? You are suffering the after effects of recent abuse, frequently being overwhelmed by fear, and when he tries to be sensitive to you, you're offended and assert your independence?! It was like she had a personality disorder.
Both of them really started to bug me- Brice with his flawless patience and Rowena with her Proud Daughter of the Chief vs. Insecure Dowdy Victim back and forth. And then things went from bad to worse. Rowena embraced insecurities and stupidity.
That was the last straw for me. She was warned about dangerous people and yet... she was never on her guard, ate up everything they said, aligned herself with them and then started covering for them. Within the space of minutes. I could see how this was going to play out- her insecurities would breed jealousy and desire for Brice. She would be duped. She would be threatened. Their true nature would be revealed, he would save her, convince her of his love and all would end happily. I don't mind predictability. But the characters became insufferable to me in their naivete and gullible-ness.
And despite it starting out SO good, at about 50% of the way through, I was too angry to finish it.
I wouldn't recommend this book but the beginning gives me hope for this authors potential in future books. I might even check out the first one in the series, since Brook seems intelligent and like a fighter and that's the kind of person I want to read about.
While I didn't enjoy The Reluctant Duchess quite as much as The Lost Heiress, I still devoured it. I haven't been reading quite as many historical romances lately, which has been a very good choice for me-I find that I'm much more enjoying the ones that I do read.
One aspect of the book that I really liked was how the author treated Rowena's father. He could have easily been made into a one-sided villain or tyrant, but instead White chose to make him a more complex character. While I did grow frustrated with some of Rowena's ideas and decisions, I thought the book did a good job of showing how easy it is to get a skewed view of things when we can only see pieces of a greater whole. I loved Brice, but I also appreciated how some consequences of his flirtatious nature came back to bite him. Basically, one thing I find that I really enjoy about Roseanna White's books is that she'll take a lot of situations, ideas, or character archetypes that you typically find in romantic fiction, but then flesh them out and make them real. I'm looking forward to seeing how this series wraps up in A Lady Unrivaled! After all, we have to find out what's going to happen with those red diamonds...
I received this book for free from the author in exchange for my honest review
note: this book, while "clean" does deal with the aftermath of a woman who had been raped, something younger readers should be aware of. There is some violence and a few kisses between married couples.
I loved this story. I've been reading through a lot of Roseanna White's books and I can't not give her 5 ⭐'s! There's just so much quality on every front; character development, historical accuracy, unique plot, intrigue, romance, spiritual truths, depth...her stories completely transport you and you get lost in time.
One of my favorite things about her style of writing is the quality and depth of the conversations between characters. You almost feel like you're eavesdropping because the conversations are just so good! They're realistic, detailed enough and always address everything you'd hope they would! You're never left wanting more. I'm in love with the way she writes conversations.
This particular story was heavy and emotional due to what Rowena had mentally/emotionally and physically endured. Roseanna did a really great job depicting Rowena's struggle through her anxieties and likewise, Brice as well. The way the story is written, you know the only way this relationship could work is if the Lord was in it and leading it. I don't think you'd find a better man than Brice for Rowena and vice versa ... and that, after all, is the point of this beautiful story; how the Lord lead them together despite not always understanding why and trusting Him that it was His perfect will❤️
Original Review: I adored the first book in this series, and I loved this one just as much, if not more! While it deals with some hard themes, such as abuse and rape, it handles it very well and adds and layer of depth to this book. The characters were well done, and I literally couldn't put the book down once I started it! Thankfully, the next book just released, so I don't have to wait long for the next one!
Review after re-read: I was so excited when this book finally came out on audiobook! Liz Pearce does just as good a job with this one as she did with the rest of the series! :)
“Lady Rowena Kinnaird may be the heiress to a Highland earldom, but she has never felt good enough—not for her father, not for the man she thought she’d marry, not for God. But after a shocking attack, she’s willing to be forever an outcast if it means escaping Loch Morar and the men who have jeopardized her life. Brice Myerston, the Duke of Nottingham, has suddenly found himself in possession of a rare treasure his enemies are prepared to kill for. While Brice has never been one to shy away from manor-born ladies, the last thing he needs is the distraction of his neighbor, Lady Rowena, who finds herself in a desperate situation. But when the moody Earl of Lochabar tries to trap Brice into marrying Rowena, Brice finds he’s not as opposed to the idea as he expected to be. Rowena wanted to escape the Highlands, but she’s reluctant to resort to marrying a notorious flirt just to gain his English home. And when she learns that Brice is mixed up in some kind of questionable business with a stolen treasure, she ’fears she’s about to end up directly in the path of everything she was trying to avoid.”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Pre Teens- One Star New Teens- One Star Early High School Teens- One Star Older High School Teens- One Star My personal Rating- One Star Like the previous book in this series, “The Lost Heiress”, the cover, spine & back cover are absolutely stunning. Roseanna M. White is a good author who writes this time period well. I really wanted to like this book, I really did. I wish I could give this book at least a two stars for older girls, because by the end, faiths grow, everything works out and the gorgeous cover…and spine…but, I just can’t because of the content. I didn’t dislike Rowena, just all what she was put through. The girl just made me want to hug her and any other girl who has gone through similar stuff. My heart just breaks for girls in that situation. While this book might be healing for young women who have gone through the awfulness that is a rape, it might trigger some memories. I’m not a Downton Abbey fan at all and maybe since this book is marketed to fans of that show, they would enjoy it more. There are many mentions of the marriage bed and while the marriage is not consummated on the pages (which I appreciate immensely), I just personally didn’t find this a very pleasurable read.
