Feeling the need for a little escapism, I read all three of these novels back to back. There is a comforting similarity about Pilcher's books. They usually feature a charming old house either in Cornwall or Scotland, surrounded by spectacular scenery. The house is occupied by a delightfully eccentric old lady who hosts a guest, a young woman who is struggling with difficult life decisions regarding love and career. During her visit she is healed by the wisdom of the older generation and the beauty of nature.

The books don't seem repetitious, because the characters are all so well drawn and the plots just different enough to hold my interest. I love reading about setting -- landscapes, furniture, food, and clothing -- and I am easily carried away to the delightful world of Rosamund Pilcher. Although classified as a romance writer, her obituary in The Guardian said that she had elevated the romance genre to an altogether higher, wittier level.

These novels are set out in the order that I liked them - September, Voices in Summer and The Carousel. All are lovely novels set Scotland and England, and all interweave stories of sorrow, joy, past and present loves. Highly enjoyable.

A book that started out with me thinking: “What is this? Just a book about normal people's lives; this is what it would be like if I wrote a book about my life.” It turned out to be a fairly interesting look into their lives, although pretty normal, but an abnormal event turns their lives upside down for a short time. Love Pilcher’s character development.
