Jen Elliott’s world is falling apart.

Her boyfriend is married (not to her), the restaurant she works for sells out to a chain (she’s unemployed), and her apartment building catches fire (thankfully, she didn’t start it). Faced with a job search and living with her parents, a phone call from her brother changes everything.

“Come out here, Little J. Escape for a while.”

Convinced to do just that, Jen finds herself on her brother’s doorstep in Chicago. Armed with her guitar and a bruised heart, she plans to work on her music and contemplate her future. What she doesn’t expect is to fall for the sexy, tattooed neighbor upstairs. From the moment Latson appears uninvited in her bedroom, the two can’t help but wage a battle of sarcasm and wit.

Until the attraction becomes impossible to ignore.

Hopeful the universe is finally playing fair, Jen gives in to her feelings. She should know, however, that when it rains, it pours. When offered the unexpected chance of a lifetime, she decides to pursue her passion. Unfortunately, her dreams are tied to Latson’s painful past. As time goes on and their distance grows, Jen fears fate conspired to bring them together only to tear them apart.

Cardinal is the story of losing everything you have to find everything you need.

Cardinal is a standalone, contemporary romance for ages 17+. Cardinal is a spin-off of Sparrow; however, the books do not need to be read in order.

Overall Opinion: This was a story that I felt was unique in many ways. We always get the rockstar H that leaves on tour, but in this it was our h. Our H was a rockstar, but he hung that hat when he became a single dad for his nephew. I loved Oliver! Though it was unique, I still don't feel like it will go down as one of my favorites or be all that memorable unfortunately. I liked the idea of the couple, but I didn't truly feel their connection. I realized this when the climax hit and I wasn't feeling any bit emotional for them. I praise Ms. Mack for having put these ideas together, but the execution just fell a little flat for me.

Storyline: This is Jen and Latson's story. They (officially) meet when Jen attends a party at his apartment with her brother. Jen just arrived in Chicago to stay with her brother after losing her boyfriend (who she found out was married), her job, and her apartment. They both feel a strong attraction, but Jen is not wanting to start any relationship with the way her life is such a disaster. She ends up working as a bartender in the bar that Latson owns, and they start a fun, flirty banter. She also meets his nephew, Oliver, that he has full custody of and builds a great relationship with him. Eventually after some chasing and wooing, they give into their attraction and start a relationship. Jen is then given the opportunity to follow her dreams and go on tour with one of Latson's old band mates. After some family, ex-groupie, ex-record executive, and personal drama...they find their HEA.

POV: This was in Jen's POV.

Overall Pace of Story: Ok. There were a few parts that I felt the urge to skim, but not too many (just parts that I felt were irrelevant to the overall story and that some editing could've taken care of). I wouldn't necessarily call it instalove, but there wasn't that much development of their relationship before some strong feelings were felt (not expressed until the end though).

H rating: 3 stars. Latson. He was moody at times that made him off-putting for me, and not just mysterious like some of the leading H's are (and I think might've been the goal of his characterization). I did like how he cared about his nephew though.

h rating: 3 stars. Jen. She was just kind of meh. I think she let him get away with the biggest conflict they had towards the end way too easily...he was hurtful, and she just swept it under the rug IMO.

Sadness level: Low. I didn't feel fully invested in the couple's connection to feel sad when they hit a rough patch...so no tissues needed here.

Heat level: Low. Fade to black. I didn't even feel that much sexual tension either (might go back to not feeling the connection at all).

Descriptive sex: No

Sex scene with OW or OM:

Cheating:

Possible Triggers:

Closure: Way too abrupt of an ending for me. I reluctantly call it a HEA, but I needed to understand how they got to their epilogue a year later.

Worth the $?: It was kindle unlimited, so I'll say yes. If it wasn't included with that subscription, and I paid $2.99...I'd probably say no...sorry.

I received Cardinal in return for an honest review as part of the release event. Jen’s life has taken a dramatic spin downwards from the fact that her boyfriend is married to another girl, her apartment catches on fire but it’s just water damage, and she’s lost her job. When the chance to leave town presents itself Jen takes the chance to visit the brother she’s been putting off visiting. What should be a chance to relax, re-evaluate and figure out what she wants to do with her future may not be what is on the agenda.

Jen figures this is a perfect time to work on her music but is drawn into working as a bartender at the same club as her brother and the sexy neighbor from upstairs. The more time that Jen spends with Latson the more they start to connect, and after she has a chance meeting his nephew they make it official. When the chance to tour with his brothers band comes up she’s torn between love and her music. At latson’s instance she takes the chance it’s only 5 months what could happen? Will their love survive the 5 months that they are on tour? Will is past come back to break them up?

I like Jen she’s a total sweetheart who needs a good guy after what happened with her ex and I think Latson is just what she needs. They each have issues with pasts but they learn to accept each other and move past them after almost losing each other. I like the chemistry between the two it works well for them, and I’m a sucker for a happy ever after. I also liked getting to know her brother Pete and his girlfriend Jules they are a great addition to Jen’s life.

I haven’t read the prior book so I was a little nervous but Cardinal is my kind of story so I knew I couldn’t pass up the chance. The story is a fast paced contemporary romance that revolves around Jen and Latson as they figure out how to make it work. I actually had a hard time putting down Cardinal and finished it in a single lazy day it’s a captivating story that captures the heart as well as the imagination. I really love the idea of a normal girl finding a happy ever after with a Rockstar even if he’s no longer currently active after everything that happened. I really enjoyed the writing style the author uses it was easy to fall in love with her characters who are easy to connect with. I can’t wait to check out her other books because I enjoyed Cardinal so much.

Cardinal is a spin off of Sara Mack's novel Sparrow. I suggest reading Sparrow first even though they are different main characters the ending of Sparrow will be given away in Cardinal.

Cardinal tells the story of Jen. She just broke up with her boyfriend of three years and found out the new guy she was dating was married. She is completely down on her luck and now out of a job. She decides to move in with her brother in Chicago for some "me" time. Here is where she meets Latson. I am not really into the tattoo/band type guy but Latson is SO different! He has the biggest heart. He is raising his little nephew and is so sweet with him. He gave up his entire career to be a "dad" to his nephew. Latson & Jen have an instant attraction but its a long build up before they finally decide to be more than friends. Once they do it's like fireworks.

What is interesting about the story is half way through the book becomes almost like another story itself. Instead of Latson being the hot band guy, it's Jen who is the rock star. I loved that Sara Mack was able to make the female lead the rock star hitting the road.

Jen & Latson's story was really cute and believable. I loved them together. I enjoyed Cardinal way more than I did Sparrow. I am so glad she left Kyle... lol

I give Cardinal 4 stars.

I absolutely loved this book. It is was on those books that pulls on your heart strings and sticks with you forever. It would make a perfect movie (if cast correctly).

When life completely kicks you down, what do you do? Go visit your brother of course. Then you meet sexy bar owners/rockers like Gunner. Jen's apartment is flooded, she lost her job and her boyfriend is actually married to another woman. Her life couldn't get much worse. She packs up and heads to her brother. In walks Gunner, her brother's boss and neighbor. The chemistry in this book is off the charts hot. I totally need a Gunner in my life! I was worried for a little bit when Jen went on the road and her and Gunner grew apart a little and started to fight some.

I loved reading about Jen's and Gunner's relationship. It was so sweet and beautiful. The author put some much detail and care into it, it came across perfectly and will leaving people day dreaming about having a relationship like theirs. I think that Oliver was my favorite side character, and there are a lot of great side characters in this book. He was so cute and reading about big, bad tattooed hottie Gunner putting his life on hold to take care of him was so sweet. This is a must read book for everyone!

My favorite Sara Mack book so far!

I've read and loved everything by Sara Mack, but this one blew me away. It has everything I desire in books--hot rock stars, a strong female protagonist, a sweet romance, and an engaging plot beyond the romance.

Although I really enjoyed Sparrow by Sara Mack, the ending left me wanting more, especially for Jen. She got dealt a bad hand more times than once. Well, this book changes everything. I don't want to include spoilers, but let's just say Jen's life is turned upside down in Cardinal and probably not exactly in the way you'll suspect as you start reading. By the end, I got the satisfying closure I was seeking for Jen.

One of my favorite things about this book was how three-dimensional the characters are. I already loved Jen from Sparrow, but I got a better appreciation for her throughout this book. And, let's just say Latson is my new book boyfriend. What I especially like about him is that he's not perfect. He's got flaws, but the more we learn about his past, the more we understand where those flaws stem from. And by the end of the book, he's had significant personal growth, something that I love to see.

Another aspect of this book I really enjoyed was the glimpse into the rock star lifestyle. I've been on a rocker book kick for a while, but usually find myself disappointed because all the important details (e.g., performing, touring, practicing, meet and greets) seem to be glossed over. Not in this book. We get to see it all. Assuming Mack doesn't have a secret life as a rock star, I'm impressed with the amount of research she must have done to make all of this seem completely authentic.

Overall, I recommend Cardinal to anyone who likes sweet NA romance without overly explicit intimate scenes or anyone who likes rocker romances with a twist. As for me, I'll continue to read everything Mack publishes because she just gets better and better!

Fantástico spin-off de Sparrow.

This was a sweet read. At the end of Sparrow, I did wonder what happened to Jen and it was nice to get her story. When Jen escapes to Chicago to visit with her brother, she wasn’t expecting for her life to change. I really enjoyed the chemistry between Jen and Latson. The friendship that was built into their relationship showed how deep their bond really went. Those two together was so fantastic to read. And just like Kyle from Sparrow, I just loved Latson. What he was able to do to overcome his past was great, especially when it came to his nephew Oliver. I liked how Jen didn’t let life get her down but was able to be better and accomplished a lot. I enjoyed seeing her transformation throughout the story. A good story from start to finish that will keep you entertained. It flowed very nicely and was an enjoyable read.

This book was simply wonderful. I loved the connection between Jen and Latson, loved that he pushed her to follow her dreams. It was so easy to relate to the characters (even the rock stars), and I loved the use of music throughout.

Thank you Tara for gifting me these two beautiful books. Sara is an amazing writer.

I LOVED this story. The way it played out, the characters, the witty banter and even the tears I cried. And the last 14% that kept me on my toes.

Check out this book... but I think you should read Sparrow first

I’ve often heard people ask, “where have all the NA stories gone?”

It’s not that they aren’t being written. It’s that in this market we all know sex sells and the NA stories we once enjoyed have been replaced with twenty somethings and their constant sexcapades. Sometimes it seems like the words in between are just that, filler to get to the next sex scene.

Well my previous answer to “where are they?” was, it’s over here…read Sparrow by Sara Mack. Now, my answer is READ CARDNIAL, it’s even better!

I honestly wasn’t sure how this was going to go. I mean, I liked Jen in Sparrow. At one point I was so done with Addison I told Sara I wanted Kyle to wind up with Jen. But in the end she was a secondary character that I didn’t have any vested interest in. Then Sara said, I have this idea and Jen keeps talking to me. Well, I’ve learned when Sara’s characters talk, we should all just listen.

Jen Elliot is not who I thought she’d be. If you read Sparrow, you know a little bit about her (if you haven’t read Sparrow, go do so, now!). Based on that little bit, I made some assumptions that turned out not to be who she was at all. I liked that we got to know Jen better. I felt like I cared about what happened to her.

Often times as I was reading this book (one chapter at a time while it was being written) I kept saying to myself, I wonder whatever happened with that guy or that girl, like I thought they were real, or a story I had read a while ago. And then I would remember it hadn’t been written yet and then remembering it hadn’t been written yet. This story stuck with me and I couldn’t get it out of my head. I still think about it from time to time and wonder what they’re all doing now.

And Latson…Oh my Latson! He’s the mix of all the right things that make you want to keep coming back for more. Even when I was annoyed with him, I could reason that his behavior was understandable.

But my favorite character is probably Oliver and you’ll just have to read about him to find out.

This book is a mix of fun, flirting and family (the ups, downs and love of it all).

I definitely recommend it to people, as a matter of fact I’ve gifted paperbacks and lent out my own signed copy just to get someone to read it because I loved it!

Rock on Sara Mack!

Favorite Quotes:
- "So obviously, I'm in the 'thought about taking them home' category?"

"No." He squeezes my knee again. "You're in a category all your own."
- "But since our places are occupied," he leans forward, "I'm going to go home. So I can think of ways to chase you."

"Make 'em good," I tease. "I can run fast or I can run slow. It all depends on you."

He searches my face for a moment before flashing his sexy smile. "Little Bird, I don't care how fast you run. Just as long as it's toward me."
- "What I meant is I've never wanted anyone the way I want you."

Speechless, I get lost in his gaze, in his burning expression and beautiful eyes.

"I don't know what that means, but I want to find out," he says. He runs his thumb over my lower lip. "Are you okay with that? Jumping into the unknown?

I've never been one to back down from a challenge. I lift my hand, plant a slow kiss on his lips and then whisper against them.

"Geronimo."
- His eyes immediately snap to mine. "I meant what I said. I've never wanted anyone the way I want you. I don't know if it's your smart mouth, your talent, or your heart that makes me wants you more, but you haven't left my mind since day one. Yes, I'm glad last night happened, but I'd feel the same if it hadn't. I don't think you understand what you've done to me."

My expression softens as I take in his words. "What did I do?"

"You made me feel."
- "I want you to go for it, and I want you to stay for me." He tucks a piece of hair behind my ear. "I have to listen to my head and support you, because if I listen to my heart..." He hesitates. "I'll never let you go."

Side Note :
Oliver melted my heart, he was the best part of the book. I always hate when the characters act like idiots and jump to conclusions, it's frustrates me to no end, that's why I took away a star.

This is a contemporary romance. It can be read as a stand alone, but it has characters from Sara's book Sparrow, so I recommend that you read that also, but it is not necessary. This story draws you in from the start and never lets go. I found myself laughing throughout the book and occasionally wanting to strangle someone. I recommend this for adults, this is a one more chapter kind of read. I really love how Jen had to trust in herself and try again. She has a loving tender heart. And how Latson had to learn not to be so hasty with his decisions. In the end they helped each other heal.

This is Jen Elliott’s story, just when she thinks things can not get any worse for her, well life slaps her in the face. Her boyfriend is married, her job has been terminated, and a fire has left her apartment a watery mess. So she has to decide if she is going to wallow in self pity or do something that will make her happy. With a little help from her brother or maybe guilt, her decision is life changing. A little crush, a nerf gun, and some rock n roll, never a dull moment... yep just what she needs.

some of my favorite passages:

"It must say "A**holes Apply Here. Employment guaranteed."
"I understand why she made the decision she did; family comes first."
"There's a difference between being healthy and being Schwarzenegger."
"Sure there's a little extra junk in the trunk I could stand to lose. But I am not a big fan of sweat. Or fatigue."
"My fairytale just ended."
"Damn Disney movies. Is it their goal to turn people into emotional wrecks?"
"You suck," I say. He pulls me close. "I've been told I suck quite well, actually."
"There was never a dull moment." <3
"Little Bird, I don't care how fast you run. Just as long as its towards me."
"You made me feel."
"Uncle Gunnar says angels can see our kisses." <3
"My heart cracks, and the fissure runs to my soul."
"They float weightlessly hanging on to the plants with their tails. They're gorgeous."

What happens when life as you know it falls apart? Jen starts off having a job, her own place and a boyfriend. She goes to a wedding where finds out that her boyfriend is married, dumps him. She goes to her bartending job to find out the place is closing down the next day. Then the final straw she goes home to find her place had burned down and she is left with very little. Where do you go from here? She figures she'll have to move back home with her parents and begin job searching immediately. Lucky for her she receives a call from her brother who suggests she goes to stay with him and take the time to work through all that has happened.

Relieved to have somewhere to go, she goes to stay with her brother to work on her music and figure out what her next steps will be. Her brother manages a bar and finds himself short staffed in the bar area. Knowing his sister is an experienced bartender he asks her to fill in one night but with no intention of her becoming a permanent fixture behind the bar. Her mad bartending skills get her hired but the owner and her brother is not thrilled with her being employed there. Overprotective brother instincts have kicked in.

I don't want to go to farther and end up with spoilers so I am going to recommend that you read this book. I really enjoyed getting to know the characters and what seems to make them tick. I love Latson because he is just a fun character and you will enjoy his white t's along with his non white t's with hysterical sayings. If you haven't read Sparrow I suggest you give it a read first. This is a must read! Find out what happens with Jen!

Her life has just imploded...boyfriend - gone. Job - gone. Apartment - gone. What to do? Jen has always bounced back but this time what can she do? Thankfully her older brother invites her to stay with him for a while and just - find herself.

But she gets way more than she bargains for! Her chance meeting with Latson will be a pivotal moment in her life that she would never have never known would be the moment..that moment in life that changes your path.

Latson - the private neighbor upstairs, Jen's brother's boss and the man who every girls wants to be around. Latson is not the quintessential rock star that you may be expecting but oh man...he's a keeper!

The interaction between Latson, Jen and Oliver will make you smile. This sweet little boy Oliver made this story complete for me. He brought these two broken souls together and helped them heal.

Latson was a rock star until the night that changed him happened. He chose to leave that life and be with Oliver, full time. Be the parent that Oliver needed and deserved. But Latson's old bandmate offers Jen a chance in a lifetime and she takes it.

Sara Mack has created characters with depth. Yes, Latson was a rock star, but he was a flawed man too. She allows us to see the softer side of Latson which we don't often get to see. Jen was so strong but needed someone to soften her heart and make her believe that all men weren't dogs!

I loved this story, it was sweet, loving, heart wrenching at times but just such a nice story of life, love and hope

Heartbreak, loss, new beginnings, rock stars, and Latson. Yes, Latson. A sexy, tattooed rocker. *swoon* Throw in romance, a love story and you have yourself a 5+ star read in Cardinal.
Jen was a secondary character in Ms. Mack's book, Sparrow. Having a book devoted specifically to her character; giving us an inside peek at her life, her back story is pretty cool. Jen is a talented singer and guitar player but is unlucky when it comes to relationships. She's stuck in a rut, at a dead end job, another disappointment of a relationship, and did I mention her apartment burnt down? At the end of her rope, her brother tells her to come stay with him and his girlfriend in Chicago.
I've read all of Sara Mack's books. I've loved each and every one of them but Cardinal has something different, something that made me push this book to my #1 spot on my Mack favorites. It may be the whole rockstar element or the amazing lyrics Ms. Mack wrote herself. It could be all of the secondary characters played important roles, or maybe it was the incredible writing style. From the time you read the first few lines, you're immediately hooked.
All I have to say is, bravo Ms. Mack, Cardinal was outstanding! I highly recommend this book...especially if you love hot tattooed rockers ;-)

This is Sara's best book yet. I thought I loved Sparrow, but Jen's story was so much more. It has everything I desire in great story, swoon worthy male, a strong willed female lead, and an adorable child.

We meet Jen in Sparrow, and she didn't receive her happy ending, I was so happy when Sara announced that she was writing Jen's story.

Jen is having a tough time, we learned in Sparrow that her boyfriend was a lying cheater. To make matters worse she loses her beloved job, and her apartment building catches fire. Her brother convinces her to come to Chicago and stay with him. That is where we meet a sexy, tattooed, former rock star. Latson (Gunner) is not your typical bad boy. He is raising his nephew, while running a successful nightclub. While Jen has necessarily sworn off men, she has decided to live by her Cardinal rule of doing whatever it is that makes her happy. Music is her passion. Add in some wonderful secondary characters and this book is full of love, laughter, some heartache, and music.

This is going on my best of 2015 list. I think others will enjoy it, if they love a good NA, Contemporary romance. It has all the feels, and yes, even a happy ever after.

When I found out that Jen was going to get her own book I just knew I was gonna love it. She deserves her HEA too! I really like Jen and would totally be friends with her in real-life. She's strong, smart and independent. I loved that even when things seem to go all wrong for her, she handles it like a champ.

I'll be honest and say that at first I thought that Latson was going to be your typical rich, spoiled rockstar who jumps from woman to woman. I was very pleasantly surprised by who he really was and how easily he gave himself over to his feelings for Jen.

I think I loved this book the most because, while a lot of things happened, it never felt like there was too much drama or angst. I also enjoyed the fact that this was closed-door romance. Sometimes less is just more.

If you enjoy a well written, closed-door NA romance with a glimpse of the rock star lifestyle then this book is a must read.

Cardinal is one of those books that you want to prolong for as long as possible. What I mean by that is that it's so well written that it consumes you and you just don't want the story to end. Cardinal is definitely a keeper! You'll want to read it over and over again and never grow tired of it.
The story captures your heart and allows you to get lost in the world that Sara has created with Cardinal. It's filled with so much detail and emotion that it's easy to find yourself attached to the characters within the pages. Each character in this book plays a special role and while you will love most of them there are a couple that you will absolutely hate (they deserve it trust me).
This is one hell of a journey that you want to be apart of! I very highly recommend purchasing and reading Cardinal immediately.

This is Jen's story we briefly met Jen in Sparrow. You do not have to read Sparrow to understand Cardinal but a few of the characters do carry over. I loved finding out more about Jen, she is so much cooler than I thought she was.
Latson.. holy book boyfriend.. he is HOT!!
Jen is having the worst week imaginable and just when she thought it couldn't get worse, it did! When her brother, Pete, calls in the middle of it she plans and impromptu visit to his place. While there she meets Latson, the hot neighbor who will make her question every rule she has set for herself.
I loved this story!

An Amazing Story! Couldn't put it down!

First off, this is the first book I've read of Sara Mack's. I own them all but they were always on my TBR list just waiting for me. I'm so glad I read this. This book is not only filled with romance but with great humor. The chemistry between Jen & Latson sizzles, smokes and crackles with fiery passion.

I seriously couldn't get enough of this book. I had to keep reading it's that good! Words truly fail me when trying to describe this book because I feel as though they wouldn't do the book justice.

If you like romance, humor, an all consuming love and passionate read then this is for you!

I was given a copy by the author in exchange for an honest review.

This was a wonderful book, it is very well written. I was pulled in right from the beginning. I lvoed the flirting scences, they were so funny. You will also want to root for them, cry with them and just love them. The relationship between Jen and Gunner was so sweet and you can't help but feel their emotions with them. I loved this author's work and I look forward to reading more from her.

Loved this story. Loved the friendships. I love how no one really made Jen feel like an outsider. I love how everyone in her life is so supportive of Jen after all the mess that happened for her.

And, let's not talk about how much I really loved Latson!!! So happy he was persistent with Jen. He has a lot of baggage in his past and a little something extra in his life. Neither of them were looking for a relationship but, sometimes what we aren't looking for can be right in front of us.

Chasing dreams, letting go of the past, grasping at the future and holding on tight.

Wow this is my favorite book by Sara,

Jen always got the short side of life, she never got a break from a broken heart. Is it time for a change? After a fire where her apartment gets drenched its time to get away to find the piece of mind she needs, try to mend heartache. Jen leaves town only a few hours away to visit her brother, what she dont know is her life gets turned upside down is this in a good way or could it be worse then ever?

Do fairytales ever come true? Maybe so but only time will tell! This is a must read you wont be disappointed and you just might believe!

I got this book as an ARC for an honest review.
This was a great book - how do I really know this with my picky self? Because I caught myself grinning and laughing as I read through. Cardinal swept me up with the fun from the Stripper Therapy on. It was an easy book to emotionally invest in and the characters (for good and for irritated at stubborn people!) and the story was a new twist.
This is well written with a great flow and the pace kept me up reading, even though I should have gone to bed.
I've enjoyed Sara Mack's work in the past, but this is my favorite so far.
