Michael has worked on magazines, book jackets, animated films, TV adverts, and even for the police, sketching criminals described by witnesses. As well as illustrating many of his own books, Michael has illustrated over a hundred books for authors such as Shakespeare, J. M. Barrie, the Brothers Grimm, Charles Dickens and Oscar Wilde. Michael has travelled widely - to Africa, Japan, the Arctic Circle, China and Malaysia, the Himalayas, Siberia and New Zealand - to research his books. "I do a lot of research when I'm travelling - I find it thrilling to discover the particular 'art' of different landscapes and work them into a book. But I find I have to travel by myself, otherwise I'm constantly getting involved in other people's impressions of a place... I try to be invisible when I'm travelling, so I tend to listen in on conversations rather than participate in them - I just want to look and draw."

'' The Amazing Tale of Ali Pasha '' is a novel told by a journalist, based on true events of an old Australian soldier of the WWI. He fights in Gallipoli in Turkey, on the battlefield. He found a tortuise and he lived with her during his entire life.
The story has been written by Mickael Foreman. There are a lot of good illustrations and old pictures.
Our favourite quote is « It was Corton where Mr Henry Friston lived, in a pair of restored railway carriages, with his family and his tortoise, Ali Pasha ».
We like this book, it's the best novel we have never read because although it seems incredible, this is a true story. Moreover, the illustrations awesome throughout the whole book.
What an amazing and very interesting book !

The Amazing Tale of Ali Pasha by Michael Foreman was written in 2013, it's a novel
This is a story of Henry Friston. He was a doctor soldier, during WWI. He is an old Australian soldier and he fought in Gallipoli in Turkey. He adopted a turtle and his name is Ali Pasha, He was with him all the time in his extraordinary adventures. What a cute turtle !

We think this book is realistic, some moments were boring because of too many details but others were fascinating.
The end was not surprising !

We recommended this book for those who are looking for an easy to read book and for those who like WWI.

A stunning and heart warming tale of Henry Friston a 21 year old solider in WW1 and his unlikely war companion- a tortoise named Ali Pasha. Michael Foreman had intertwined stunning illustrations in between a shocking tale of heroism, bravery and courage. This is a must read book! The descriptions Foreman uses really drew me in and I found myself hooked from the start. This book would be ideal for use in UKS2 (due to some or the more graphic descriptions) to introduce the post 1066 History study WW1.

The book is entitled "the amazing tale of Ali Pasha". It was written by Michael Forman and it was published in 2013 in the United Kingdom. It's the true story of Henry Friston, a soldier during the first world war, who finds a turtle on a battlefield in Turkey. He decides to keep it and calls it "Ali Pasha". He hides the animal on his warship until the end of the war. Together, they go through many adventures.
In this book, the paintings are beautiful, they make us travel around the world with Henry and Ali Pasha. The story is envoutating and quite easy to read, but there are typical English expressions that are not very easy to understand.

The true story of how one sailor finding himself flung into a trench by a shell at Gallipoli, stays calm through the next few hours by sheltering with another shelling victim, a tortoise. Afterwards, Henry takes the tortoise back with him to the ship and they become the most unlikely of friends for the rest of Henry's war and then on into life in rural England.

A well told story of WW1 with un unusual perspective and great illustrations and photos. Perfect for all ages.

This was a wonderful children’s book which contained a story within a story. The initial story tells of a young reporter sent to Mr Henry Friston’s house to see if his tortoise, Ali Pasha, had woken from hibernation. This leads to Henry’s WW1 story and how he met his tortoise friend, Ali Pasha. The end of the book has a note from the author sharing how he met Henry and Ali and more details about the pair, including photos. I love when books include these details.

I found this book on a visit to a museum and was curious about the role of a tortoise during the war. It gives another perspective about life during WW1 and how people dealt with the situation at the time. I enjoyed how the author introduced the reader to Ali and his story.
