Refuge of the Heart

Ruth Logan Herne

REFUGE OF THE HEART is an inspirational and very emotional story about two refugees, Lena and Anna who teach us what faith and courage is all about. They don't let fear stop them and right from the very first page, you will be cheering for both of them and praying that they get to their happily ever after place. Ruth Logan Herne pulls her readers in from the first chapter and never lets them go. Ruth also breaks the readers hearts, shreds them, and then, hands them back all put back together again. She also teaches them about compassion and God's love. I read this heart tugging story in one sitting and loved every minute of it.

Lena and her little sister Anna are refugees from Chechnya who are sponsored by an American church and are looking for a better life. The war in their home country has killed the rest of their family and while they are struggling, they also know that even though they suffered great loss, life is better in America. They take nothing for granted. REFUGE OF THE HEART starts with Anna and Lena leaving the store and realizing they have a flat tire. Along comes Mitchell Sanderson to the rescue. He arranges for Lena to get a new tire and buys the ladies lunch while they are waiting. Mitch is instantly attracted to Lena and wants to get to know her more, but Lena is not forthcoming with information about herself and knows that if Mitch knew who she really is, he wouldn't give her the time of day. Mitch's heart quickly lets Anna in and all he wants to do is help them.

REFUGE OF THE HEART has many twists and turns and while Mitch thinks he is rescuing Lena and Anna it just might be that they are rescuing him. Mitch is still reeling from a tragic loss and has closed off his heart to everyone. He is a district attorney and he is barely living. He has lost all his faith in God while Lena embraces her faith and never hesitates to help others. Mitch is nothing but work work work........until he meets Lena and Anna. They say opposites attract and nothing could be truer with Mitch and Lena. Be prepared for your emotions to be all over the place while reading this well researched novel by my new favorite author, Ruth Logan Herne who just so happens to live in my neck of the woods. The challenges that all three of these people face will have you unable to put REFUGE OF THE HEART down until the very last page.

Herne ripped my heart out and stomped all over it during this read. It's back in place now, but still tender and fuller somehow, like the Grinch's heart that grew three sizes too big. Because that's the kind of read this is -- transforming. Opens your eyes and your heart, fills you with compassion. Urges you to walk a little taller, be a whole lot kinder and leave judgements up to God.

As a priest tells Magdalena: "But Lena, child, we're never alone...Our actions and those of others entwine. Each candle that's lit, each ripple in the sea, changes the world around us." (p.262) Refuge of the Heart changed my world and I'm sure its ripple effect will be felt for some time to come.

Lena is easy to love, to worry about, to hurt for. She bears herself with a quiet dignity that masks the agony of a dark past. Tenacious, determined, devoted to her little sister, she's trying to look ahead to a better future. One that doesn't include a man -- especially a District Attorney.

Mitch is a complicated and sometimes contradictory hero. Set the swoon meter to overload because his measured pursuit of Lena is a toe-curling delight. But, as in all her books, Herne doesn't shy away from the grit of realism. Characters lives are messy, they are honest products of their upbringing and life experience. That makes them act in ways that will test a gentle reader's heart. I actually closed the book and set it aside at one point. Washed my floors and cleaned the bathroom so I could avoid picking it up again and all the while my throat burned and my chest felt like it was in a vice-grip.

I alternately wept copious tears and cheered myself hoarse over the course of this novel. Stunning and compelling and definitely unforgettable.

"How she went from being a young doctor approaching residency, almost affluent by town standards, to being a commodity, sold to nameless soldiers, night after night."

Shocking.

Magdalena Serida's life, before receiving a church-sponsored refugee immigration opportunity, had been a nearly unbelievable mixture of pain and pleasure. Being caught in the crossfire of the heinous Russian insurgency into Chechnya, she lost everyone in her family to war, except her young sister. Now living a quiet life, studying to earn an American degree as a registered nurse, Lena works part time in a seniors care facility to support herself and her sibling. It takes a snowy evening, a flat tire, and a handsome stranger, for Lena to begin feeling a mixture of fear, hope, and uncertainty; who could possibly forgive her past, but the Almighty God?

District attorney Mitchell Sanderson is fascinated bu the lovely Lena Serida and her precocious little sister, Anna. Coming to their aid, Mitch discovers a side of himself that isn't all about law, order, and political aspirations. As their friendship blossoms, it's obvious that Lena still carries heavy burdens and unnatural fears; she rarely speaks of her past and she is hesitant to take steps towards their future. Are they building a relationship on solid rock or sinking sand; can the pieces be put back together again if their dreams suddenly come crashing down around them?

Not only is this a fascinating story, it's a sober reminder that life is precious and that we, as members of Christ's body, are called to come to the rescue of those beaten and battered by circumstances beyond their control, with a loving and compassionate spirit.

Rated 4.5 - An emotional and inspirational novel about two refugees whose faith and courage outweigh their fears. Their happy-ever-after is an uplifting story especially appreciated by readers who enjoy a scripture based book.

Magdalena “Lena” Serida and her five-year-old sister Anna live on a limited income. Since a Catholic church sponsored their immigration from Chechnya over three years ago, Lena has been studying to regain her medical degree in the United States. Their limited funds barely provide for the essentials, so a flat tire right before Christmas is a crisis in the making.

District Attorney Mitch Sanderson is about to start his campaign for reelection for the position he’s devoted his life to. When he discovers a young woman with a small child in a parking lot about to notice her flat tire, Mitch can’t drive by without helping them. Something about Lena and Anna remind him of his faith and he buys them four new tires for their car.

Lena is determined to pay Mitch back for his kindness so she tries to do exactly that, but Mitch wants to see Lena again on a more personal level. He convinces Lena to go out with him and slowly wins her confidence. But there is more to Lena’s life story than she’s willing to share. Will Mitch do the right thing when he discovers the truth about her immigration, or will he walk away to protect his reputation?

REFUGE OF THE HEART is a sweet story that follows a couple through the normal challenges of developing a relationship. Lena’s fears are well-founded due to her experience within a war-torn area, and having dealt with a heavy loss of family and friends. She’s not easily convinced to trust and is reluctant to accept Mitch’s interests. Mitch finds it hard to have faith especially due to his line of work where trust is often missing. When he finally earns Lena’s complete faith and acceptance, will he prove himself unworthy of her love?

There were times within this novel when the hero disappointed me with his actions but in the end he makes up for it enough for me to believe in his sincerity. Lena’s story is pretty horrifying, once we learn what actually happened to her and Anna, so it’s easy to be sympathetic to their plight.

This book is perfect for those who love a faith-based novel that’s character driven and inspirational. The deep emotion felt while reading this story tugged on my heartstrings and I was happy with the resolution. Lena isn’t an easy woman to love because of her fears and experience that make her too proud to explain her situation. Mitch cares deeply but allows what others say to influence him. In the end, they both show great courage and redemption that’s gratifying.

REFUGE OF THE HEART showcases the plight of two refugees and their adaptation to the possibility of a more positive future, never forgetting to be grateful for the small things. The lessons taught through scripture are very enlightening and spoke to my heart. I don’t think anyone can read this book and not feel inspired to give to those in need. Author Ruth Logan Herne has a gift for interpreting scripture with compassion and illumination in this beautiful, heartwarming story.

When I’m not reading or blogging or spending time with my family, I stand in front of a room of adults from all over the world and teach them English. Teaching English as a Second Language has – without question – completely changed my life. And so, as I read Ruth Logan Herne’s exquisitely beautiful Refuge of the Heart, I laughed and cried and grinned and sobbed with Magdalena from Chechnya. Ruth so perfectly captured the voice of an educated immigrant, the inflections and the frustrations (idioms!), the struggle and the dignity. It was easy for me to see and hear Lena in my mind as I read. Because to me, Lena is more than just a tiny but fierce character. She is a mix of each of my students.

Refuge of the Heart is a romance but it’s so much more. (And oh, the romance is so incredibly sweet and tender. The way Mitch deliberately pursues Lena and his unabashed affection for Anna… simply swoonable!) It is a story that will reach into your heart and squeeze until you feel you can’t breathe from the emotion. It is a story filled with warmth and humor and smiles in spite of the heaviness of loss that both Lena and Mitch have known. It is a story that will open your eyes to the world around you – including the world at your backdoor. It is a story of hope, of redemption, of courage, of survival.

Bottom Line: Have some tissues handy when you read this book. But be prepared to smile a lot too! Ruth Logan Herne’s writing style is perfection, as are her characters. This story – and Mitch, Lena, and Anna – have thoroughly captivated me and they will stay in my heart for a long time to come. Highly recommended for any and every one! Refuge of the Heart is a book you just simply must read!! If I could make it a requirement for all of you, I would ;)

Wow, this book was hard to put down. I could feel the emotion from the characters. I was pulled in from the beginning.

I loved Mitch and Lena and Anna. Thiers is a story that I won't soon forget. This is not your typical love story, but it is oh so good.

I plan to share this book with many friends.

I gave this book 4.5 stars and I highly recommend it.

I have to confess . . . I didn’t want to read this book.

Okay, there. I confessed. Someone had posted that it was a tear-jerker and I let their opinion stop me. And I feel pretty stupid about it, because it was such a wonderful story, I feel terrible that I might have missed out on it—because I was afraid to read it.

Well, yeah, I grabbed for the tissues, but it’s so much bigger than that. This story MUST be read—and appreciated. Time and again I felt guilty for ever thinking about not reading it.

District Attorney Mitchell Sanderson is a man to respect and trust. Magdalena Serida will endure anything to make a new life for herself and her sister. As they are continually amazed at the others’ endurance, it makes them better individuals.

Mitch and Magdalena are characters I would really like to know. I’d love to know such people, so I could learn from their bravery . . . their faith . . . and their love.

Ruth Logan Herne is an amazing storyteller! She’s never failed to be entertaining, while creating characters so real, I’d like to invite them over for supper!

I felt the timing was off, the conflict was too late in the story and the resolution was too rushed.

I enjoyed Francine's story and the characters had good depth. I enjoyed the book, but it wasn't much of a page turner.

I felt the author tried too hard to use large words and then overused those words, which was awkward.

How to ever heal from the past hurts? How to recognize that one should grow more?

Warm and tender-hearted story, full of heart - and I am meaning it literally here. This is not a perfect book, but it touches and changes your heart - and this is what is important, after all.

Magdalena Serida and her 5-year-old sister Anna are Chechen refugees in the US. Lena bears her hard life with dignity, hard-working attitude and with always putting the needs of her sister above her. That's why she accepts the help of a stranger when her tire goes out - and Mitch is smitten immediately. Lena is beautiful, but what attracts him is more than her beauty - it is her depth. Lena goes deeper than most and has values - and Mitch is inspired to be a better man because of her. And his instincts are right, because Lena is exceptional - but what he does not know is her suffering in the past, what was done to her and what she did, too. Can he truly see her?

This novel is full of warmth, and also of inspiration. It teaches us not to judge, not to get lazy in the comforts of our homes, not to stop being human - but to recognize the (sometimes simple) needs of others, the suffering of the world, the scars that the others bear and to help - and to grow, to rise above the common Christianity to become truer, more loving follower of the Living God.

I also want to applaud the authoress to shine a light to the Chechnya situation. Being an European from the post-communist country, this topic is somehow more personal to me. Even if I think that the migrant crisis is complicated and there are risks, too, I very much thank the authoress to show the readers that there are various conflicts going on within the world and the suffering is not limited to the detain countries/regions.
It is also important to speak about the suffering of women in these regions.

OK, and time to be honest has come - while I truly applaud the authoress for not taking the easy path with her heroine and let her suffer horribly - I don't think that a victim of such violence would let an unknown man, however nice and attractive, into the life of her - and of her young sister, even! - so easily. Mitch won Lena's trust too easily, in my opinion.
I would also not stop the friendship with Dee. However shallow she might be, Mitch is in no position to judge her, without Lena he would be at the same place. And in my eyes she tried to help him, however clumsily.
But thumbs up for the hilarious name of her boyfriend - Joaquin Banderas! LOL.

Having said all that - this novel has warmed my heart. It also inspired me to grow, to not stay comfortable in my own supposedly well-lived life, but to really go out from the box of my selfishness and to try to lead by example (or even to live that example).
Thank you, Ms Logan Herne, much needed message.

Recommended read.

I received an advanced reading copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I don't read very many books that are Fiction. As you might have noticed I only read romance novels. Novels like Refuge of the Heart always catch my eye but I'm always so picky about them because they're not written correctly or aren't correct historically and that's why I tend to stay away from them. I found this book on Netgalley and the cover immediately caught my eye as well as the unique story line. In this novel you will meet to unique people who are polar opposites but the same at heart. They have both suffered great loses, though, one more than the other as you will find out.

In Refuge of the Heart you meet 30 years old Magdalena (Lena) Serida and her younger sister Anna whom is 5 years old. Both are refugees from Chechnya and came to America to get a better life and to escape the war ridden area. Back in Chechnya Lena was a doctor but now here in America she's forced to work and go to school for nursing to support herself and her younger sister. This isn't the life she imagined but she's actually very optimistic about everything. Though, the one thing that does bring her down is that she can't properly support her baby sister in the way that she needs. She lives in a small apartment in the bad part of town and sometimes only has less than 30 dollars to last her an entire week but she's content with the life she has here.

"Once Lena's nursing degree was complete next spring, life would change for the better. And knowing what had been, Lena drew strength from planning what could be. Step by Step."

Now we meet District Attorney Mitchell Sanderson. He was born privileged and knew nothing of struggle. He grew up with housekeepers, and cooks and luxury. One day while Mitch was driving to a fancy part he noticed a flat tire on a beat up car. He stopped for a little while to see who it belonged to and lo and behold this car belonged to Lena. He stopped and bought her a new tire (much to her unnapproval) and lunch. This one encounter sparks a friendship that will ultimately turn into love.

Over the course of a few weeks Mitch shows Lena a good time. He gives her gifts to ease her worries and showers her with attention and love. Lena teaches him to be kind, to be helpful and thankful. Mitch shows her the finer things in life and that she doesn't always have to keep walls up. He showed her how to have fun. Together they tore down each other's walls and accepted each other for who they were. Even though Mitch didn't know anything about Lena's life in Chechnya he accepted her...until someone told him half-truths about her past. Then he left.

The end part broke my heart! I didn't know if I wanted to cry or scream. But when you learn what Lena's past was really like you will feel for her. You will cry. You will hate everything. She had the most traumatic past ever. It's a wonder how she's still so optimistic after everything. This book is emotional, and it will make you think. It will make you feel grateful for everything you have. It was an amazing read and I will definitely recommend this to my English teacher to use for future novel studies. Also, don't worry, this book has a HEA. A beautiful one!

My Rating: 5 Stars.

This is a wonderful story of courage, survival, the undefeated human spirit, terror, relationships, faith in God and redeeming love. I loved this story and couldn’t read it fast enough. Ms. Herne did a wonderful job of instilling emotion into this story; I could feel all the Lena’s emotions, the cultural differences, the language, having to start her education over here, I thank God I live in America. Lena, the main character of this story has suffered as no human being should have to suffer, and came to America with the help of the Catholic Church for a new life. Grozny, Chechnya was a battleground of fighting and evil men with evil intentions.

Lena and her 5-year-old sister, Anna, live in an apartment skirting a crime-ridden neighbor but a good school for Anna. Mitchell Sanderson is the county DA up for re-election. God has plans in store for Mitch, Lena, and Anna; God orchestras a meeting between them. Lena and Anna are very solid in their faith in God and Church; Mitch not so much, he lost his wife and unborn son to a drunk driver which made a huge impact on his life and religious convictions. Mitch, Lena, and Anna meet on a cold snowy day over a flat tire. Mitch is a good man who could not leave Lena and Anna to fend for themselves. He takes them carefully under his wing, seeing the conditions they live in and how little money is available for their upkeep. Lena has so little money that putting $7.00 gas in her car is a cause for celebration. Lena was in doctor training in Chechnya, but her degrees mean nothing here, she is studying to be a nurse and working part-time in a nursing home. Lena is compassionate and understanding, with her geriatric patients. I could feel Lena's terror of the police and any law enforcement as in Chechnya they are the terror at the door in the middle of night, family members disappear, and they are never seen again. I felt such compassion for her and the horror she had faced.

But Lena also has secrets, and Mitch can feel something is off. The groundwork of Lena’s past was well executed and played an intricate part in the story. Mitch and Lena come to care for each other, but the secrets from Lena’s prior life will be revealed. Can Mitch accept what happened and go forward in Gods Grace and love? You will have to read this lovely story to find out. I loved watching Mitch and Lena find their way to what God had planned for them and realize the love they felt through all the adversity of life, and I loved watching Lena find her courage that had served her so well.

I would highly recommend this book, it is full of emotions that are so pungent that I cried at times and felt wonderful at others. A great Christian love story.

I received this book from the publisher and Netgalley in return for an honest review.

When District Attorney Mitchell (Mitch) Sanderson rescues Magdalena (Lena) Serida, and her 5 year-old sister, Anna, from the peril of a flat tire in a store parking lot - little does he realize she could be the rescuer of his heart. Shielding it against loving again, since the loss of his wife and unborn son in a drunk-driving accident, 5 years prior - he still blames God for their deaths.

Lena, a church-sponsored refugee from war-torn Chechnya, Russia, had witnessed the horrors of war firsthand - her strong Christian faith having led her through the loss of the rest of her family. However, Lena is hiding a dark secret - one which causes her nightmares, anxiety attacks, a fear and distrust of law enforcement, and a reluctance to testify on war crimes before the U.S. Senate. Once a near-affluent doctor, she is now being schooled to become a nurse - while working part-time in a nursing home, raising her sister, and living in a poverty-stricken, crime-infested neighborhood.

Mitch, a caring man from an affluent family, and a relentless worker who has strived for 3 years to remove problems in the justice system that allows criminals to escape incarceration - has earned respect and trust for his conviction rate. Drawn to Lena through her strength, courage, and faith - their relationship is challenged when Mitch's friend spreads rumors about Lena to him, causing a possible obstacle to his re-election, and his doubt of Lena's integrity.

'Refuge of the Heart' is a novel that touched me deeply with it's touching, heart-warming message of faith, trust, courage, redemption, hope, and strength. I read most of it in one sitting - through the night - unable to put it down. It expanded my knowledge of, and compassion for, the plight of refugees from war-torn countries, and aroused sympathy for Lena in her courageous battle to better life for she and her sister. Enduring the poverty of less than enough food, a lack of warm clothing and bedding, the struggle for money to put gas in her car. Things many of us take for granted. Lena's misinterpretation of the English language made me smile, as did the sweetness and conversations of Anna. The novel didn't overwhelm me with scenes from Anna and Mitch's pasts or jobs - thus allowing me to become totally engrossed in the story of Mitch and Lena: their romance, faith, lessons to be learned. Lena's resilience, practicality, dreams, and faith through such adversity was truly inspiring.

I love this longer novel from Ruth Logan Herne, her first for publisher Franciscan Media. I consider it a "work of art", her best writing to date, deserving of more than a 5-star rating. I became invested in the characters, felt their pain and joy, thought of them long after I finished reading the novel. I hope Ruth has plans for a series, a continuation of Mitch and Lena's story.

Looking for an exceptional romance novel with a Christmas theme that is a bit extraordinary? I would suggest you pick up Refuge of the Heart by Ruth Logan Herne. This is a heartwarming story of a Chechnian refugee that has escaped her war torn country and is seeking to find a fresh start for herself and her sister Anna here in America thanks to the goodwill of a local church as her sponsor. Even though it is difficult, Magdelena Serida knows that in time, she will earn her doctor's degree and find a new life in a better neighborhood and will be able to afford better clothes than they have now. She knows that most people wouldn't understand her past and how difficult it was to watch her entire family taken by Russian militants while the women were sold into slavery. That is the life Lena has left behind and one she hopes she can leave in the past.

Yet God is about to intervene in their lives in a most profound way all thanks to a flat tire, a snow covered night and an encounter with Mitch Sanderson, the district attorney. Mitch had hoped that the woman and child he had seen walking in the cold and snow were not the same people who would soon see the flat tire on the run down car, but they were. As a caring and compassionate man, he knew that he could not drive home without seeing to their safety and getting their flat tire changed. But God didn't want it to be simply that easy for any of them, and when the spare tire turned out to be bad as well, Anna, Lena and Mitch would have to spend time together waiting out the purchase of new tires while they grabbed a bite to eat. It is through Lena's eyes that Mitch sees life in a truly remarkable way as the Christmas season approaches. One full of gratitude and appreciation instead of expectation and it is just the change he needs in his own life after losing his wife and unborn son in a car accident. Perhaps perspective is a better choice in what he needs.

I received Refuge of The Heart by Ruth Logan Herne compliments of Franciscan Media for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation, aside from a free copy of the book, for a favorable review and the opinions expressed here are strictly my own. This is such an incredible feel good story of love, forgiveness, redemption and gratitude and thus the reason for it being an exceptional choice for those looking for more than simply another Christmas romance. It's a perfect reminder of what many of us in the United States never consider as we watch many war refugees fleeing from their country without knowing all the why's of what has happened to them, yet we judge them based on what we hear instead. For me this one, easily garners a 5 out of 5 in my opinion and one that will be added to my permanent library to be read each time at Christmas.

Refuge of the Heart is my favorite book this year setting a new gold standard in relevant inspirational fiction.

Lena's a courageous educated doctor from Chechnya, who along with her five year old sister Anna, become church-sponsored refuges to America. Mitch is a rising star and well-to-do district attorney with a story of his own. Their providential meeting and the unlikely love story that follows when their two worlds collide was nothing short of captivating. Lena's journey and determination to survive the brutality of her war-torn country and provide a better future for Anna had me emotionally torn up from the start. Sadly by contrast, I identified too well, more than is comfortable to admit, with Mitch and his American lifestyle, materialistic and success driven, and the bias about what he neither knew or understood. I don't want to reveal too much concerning the events of the story, like a beautiful gift package, each reader should have the privilege of unwrapping it themselves.

There are difficult heart-rending issues dealt with in this story, but Lena's comical use of the English language and her interpretation of American slang helped lighten the otherwise shocking and heart-stopping retelling of her life story. Precious Anna also added some much needed emotional relief too.

At some point the story stopped being a work of fiction and became a spiritual experience. I was totally undone and convicted about living in my own comfort zone, unable to deal with all the upsetting things happening in the world, especially concerning the suffering of Christians outside of America. This story gave me new eyes to see the plight of others and not exist only in my own small world. It changed my heart forever and that's powerful fiction at its very best!

Ruth Logan Herne has penned a beautiful love story, one of triumph in the face of adversity, of overcoming against all odds. Her brilliant ability to make me feel every emotion her story portrays is a God-given gift. This story had me in mind of the parables Jesus told that taught a lesson in story form, as there are surely lessons to be learned through reading Mitch and Lena's story. I've never read a book quite like this, a book that showed me both the best and worst side of humanity, leaving me so awestruck and emotionally stunned when I finished it I could only sit and think about it for days on end. Herne's stories bless me every time I read one, but she has outdone herself with her phenomenally inspiring storyline, exceptional characters and page-turning conclusion.

Refugee Magdalena (“Lena”) Serida and her five-year-old sister Anna escaped an uprising in Chechnya and headed to America to pursue a better life. Lena is in nursing school and struggling to support her sister, but she is quite content with her new life. She meets District Attorney Mitchell Sanderson when he helps her with a flat tire. This chance encounter is the start of a new friendship. A tragic accident once cost Mitch everything he loved, so he is not looking for a relationship at this time. Or so he thought. He finds himself falling for the Christian refugee from an Islamic region as she slowly turns his world upside down. Lena has a strong faith, which is something that Mitch is struggling with. He can tell she is fearful about something related to her past, and he wonders what it is. How will he feel about her when he learns the whole story?

This is the first full-length novel from Ruth Logan Herne, and I certainly hope it will not be her last! There is so much to be said about this book. The story details how opposites can truly attract. There are a number of emotionally gripping scenes, including some humorous ones as Lena tries to get a grasp of the American language.

While Mitch is a strong, driven character, and Anna is endearing, Lena is truly the heart and soul of this novel. She is a strong, courageous, and inspiring character — one of the best characters I have encountered in a long time (and I read a lot of books!). She is a kind soul despite her past circumstances, and she is determined not to be stopped by those events. Lena has many wonderful insights about faith, such as: “Perhaps faith is the equalizer. If we are born with varied talents and strengths, perhaps it is the valor of God which brings us to new heights.” As a refugee, she understands how much responsibility comes with the freedom that many people take for granted every day. Lena also exemplifies the importance of remembering to bless others when we, ourselves, have been blessed.

This is a well-researched novel and it educates the reader on refugees and Chechnya, which may be unfamiliar to some readers. The relationships develop at a realistic pace, and the emotional ending will stick with you beyond the final sentence.

Perhaps a little sappy and highly predictable story but very well written. Most important, it brings attention to a subject near and dear to my heart, refugees and their determination to make a new life for themselves and their loved ones.

Wow, oh wow!! Ruth Logan Herne created a masterpiece with Refuge of the Heart. I was immersed and astounded with the depth and heart felt compassion I felt reading about Magdalena Serida and her 5 year old sister, Anna.

Lena and Anna were refugees who had been sponsored by a church to come to America from Chechnya. They were so appreciative for every little thing they had in America, even though it was very minimal compared to Americans. Their faith in God and courage was shown throughout the story with what Lena had experienced in her war torn homeland. Yet Lena was fearful of the police and hesitates to accept help from others. When Mitchell Sanderson, the District Attorney, happen to see Lena struggling with a grocery cart in the snow he offered to assist. Mitch had his own issues but was drawn to Lena and little Anna fell in love with Mr. Mitch from the start. Mitch and Lena are totally opposites, with their heritage and positions in life, but Mitch could not forget Lena and sweet little Anna. Their character traits, personal struggles, and past history had to be confronted. Mitch was drawn to the deep faith and love for God that Lena and Anna had along with their gratefulness. There were misunderstandings and hurts that only God could heal before the story ended. I loved the action, faith, courage, forgiveness, love and persistence that Ruth wove into the lives of the heroine and hero, along with other characters who had an impact on Lena, Anna, and Mitch.

Readers will experience a wide range of emotions. I was right in the moment with the characters as my emotions flowed with them from my heart racing, tears flowing, and images of what was happening and rejoicing with them as they relied up God, even Lena and her family during war time in Chechnya. Ruth Logan Herne has become one of my favorite authors. I look forward to reading many more great books by Ruth.

Ruth Logan Herne writes amazing books. I am not disappointed when I choose one of her novels to get engrossed in. Refuge of the Heart is a unique experience. From the beginning, you are captured by the charm of her heroine and her sister as they are enjoying the Christmas decorations--refugees from Chechnya, living on a shoestring budget as it becomes readily apparent. Then you are introduced to the hero, Mitch Sanderson, a no non-sense District Attorney; but one with a tender heart, for he sees the flat tire Lena and her sister, Anna, are fixing to discover, and realizes he needs to be the one to rescue them.

Thus begins the complicated relationship between Lena and Mitch. Both have dark secrets which neither is willing to share with the other; yet, they are drawn to each other even though their prospective economic statuses should keep them apart.

Lena has seen and suffered through many atrocities in her homeland. Formerly a Doctor, in Chechnya, she struggles to study, work, and take care of her little sister, Anna. Mitch, lives for work, and takes pride in the job he has done. Now he is up for re-election and strives to please his electorate. Having lost his wife and unborn child tragically, he doesn't want to get emotionally involved again.

Things go from bad to worse when Mitch finally learns some of Lena's secret but believes the gossip rather than to trust what he knows to be true about Lena's character. Lena chooses not to enlighten Mitch after the hurt he's caused her and return to her original plan of survival.

True love tested in the crucibles of fire survives. You'll be jeering and cheering and completely satisfied with this ending. Another keeper by Ms. Ruth Logan Herne.

A beautiful, touching story that makes you forget it's a story. Lena and Mitch's tale is so tender yet so troubling, I completely lost myself in this book. Ruth Logan Herne tackles some difficult issues along with the sweet romance; the best part of this compelling story is that all the issues find their answer in God's abundant grace. Forgiveness and redemption come to the forefront as Mitch fights for a love others would find impossible. Lena struggles to surrender her heart as she tries to work through her feelings of unworthiness. The unlikely romance between a prominent public figure and an abused, heartbroken refugee moved me to tears, caused me to laugh aloud, and to always cheer for Mitch and Lena as they attempt to throw away the misconceptions and prejudices to make room for love.
Lena's little sister Anna is such an enchanting character, sweet, innocent, untouched by the difficulties that surround her very being. She is the glue holding Lena together, the rejuvenation in Mitch's heart after a devastating loss. Anna is my favorite character in this story, a light in the window when all else goes dark. Mitch's secretary Nancy is also a great character, caring and compassionate in an environment where little of those qualities exist in those around her.
Ruth Logan Herne has bared her heart in this compelling story, capturing me with her trademark way of evoking deep emotion from words on a page. Those words blur into a beautiful, heartwarming story that lives on in my thoughts and dreams long after the final page has been turned.

A heart-touching book!

My heart was so affected by Refuge of the Heart, a story filled with hope, forgiveness, and sweet romance. I loved Lena Serida from the moment she struggled with a grocery cart in a snowy parking lot. She shines as a bright light living her Christian faith to such an amazing level. Mitch Sanderson, as a tender, yet strong, trying-to-be-good man, is struggling with complex issues. His personality glows as he realizes his weaknesses and strives to become a better man. I raced to the end of this book, cheering for Mitch and Lena, as they faced many challenges they needed to overcome. In addition, there are so many wonderful characters, but Anna, Lena's five-year-old sister, is a complete delight of positive joy....I just wanted to hug her.....and make cookies with her. Anna convicted me with the realization I can do more for children’s safety and comfort where I live.

Refuge of the Heart is a profound and thoughtful book on many levels, changing the way I look at the world and at how I live my faith. Filled with so many perfect moments of enlightenment, for both the characters and me, I highly recommend this book to all, but especially those who desire a story of amazing faith. Thank you, Ruth Logan Herne, for writing such a heart-touching book!

* I won this book, but was under no obligation to write a review. It is my honor to express my honest opinion about this book.

I received this book in a batch for a read, score and review and I love when I get a book by an author I have never read before. Mrs. Herne wrote a beautiful story of starting over and relying on God for what is needed even when it seems that there is no hope.

Mitch Sanderson is an attorney who is in the prime of his life personally and professionally. He is financially set and seems to have nothing to want for. Except maybe purpose of a deeper nature. When he meets Magdalena and her sister he has no idea that his world view is about to be rocked.

Magdalena and her sister came to the US as refugees after their mother was killed in Chechnya. Magdalena has worked hard and is attending nursing school in order to be able to provide for her and her sister and do the type of work that she loves.

When she meets Mitch she begins to wonder if the Lord has more than a good profession in mind for her but her experiences in life have made it hard for her to trust. Knowing that the Lord has seen her through atrocities that would fell most people she decides to keep her heart open and her faith strong.

Beautifully written, thank you Mrs. Herne.

Refuge of the Heart is one of the most beautiful love stories of our time. Mitch Sanderson, District Attorney, and Magdalena Serida, refugee from war-torn Chechnya, come to life through Ruth Logan Herne's words. The story of their individual pasts--the strength, the wisdom--gained even through heartache is masterfully woven with their sweet, gentle love story of the present.

Lena escaped Chechnya with her little sister, Anna. Anna is a delightful five year old who sees the world through wide eyes of innocence and excitement. I wanted to "bring her home with me."

I have read most, if not all, of Ruth Logan Herne's books and enjoyed them all. But Refuge of the Heart wrapped itself around my heart and captivated my soul. It is one of the few books in my collection of hundreds of books that I will read over and over again.

If you can read only one book for the remainder of this year, Refuge of the Heart is that book. It will wrap itself around your heart and captivate your soul!

Refuge of the Heart, a new novel by Ruth Logan Herne, introduces the reader to Lena, a young woman who fled war-torn Chechnya with her 5-year-old sister Anna. Lena, who was a medical student on her way to a promising career before the war tore her family and her life apart, wants nothing more than to complete her nursing degree and find a job that pays well enough for her to move to a safer neighborhood with a good school for Anna. As the novel begins, D.A. Mitch Sanderson happens upon Lena and Anna as they discover a flat tire on their car on a snowy night. One broken date later, Mitch arranges for tire repairs for Lena’s car, and slowly goes on to win the independent Lena’s heart.

Lena’s past proves to be a complication for their relationship, as she fears legal reprisal for some of the things she did in order to survive the living hell of war in Chechnya. Mitch’s high-society family doesn’t help matters either.

This novel is a tribute to resiliency of spirit and a life lived gratefully. Lena has very little, but she constantly looks for ways to give back.
