The Fantagraphics Free Comic Book Day 2013 offering! This full-color comic collects two 1950 Prince Valiant stories: "Home Again," an eventful ocean journey for our new family; and "The Challenge," a classic duel with Valiant!
This sampler of two Hal Foster-drawn strips is so good that you'd want for more. Fantagraphics did the right thing and collected those masterpieces in a nice series of hardcover collections. I'd like a set for myself, but I fear I need to keep eating to live.
I assumed all free comics would be like a promo. I figured I'd check this one out and if I like it, I can read the full series. I was mistaken.
If you want to get introduced to Prince Valiant comics, this will not help you much. If you're already familiar with this comic and are looking for some random stories to read, you may like it.
This was certainly an effort to feature Prince Valiant in its original glory, but I'm not sure if this made for a good FCBD feature. It's a solid taste of what the comic is but I don't know if the selected stories really push the best aspects of the comic in this short format. It will naturally feel a little archaic versus everything else on the market these days, but it's still something to be appreciated and respected.
The problem with the narration is that it runs through the story very quickly. Before you can get the full gist of what is happening and who are the characters, the story keeps jumping to higher and higher plains and you are left hanging to catch the breath
