The book does a detailed and quite interesting overview of the history of Latin America. I particularly liked that it emphasizes the common roots that tie all the people born in the continent. On this aspect only, I would highly recommend the book.

That said, even with my background as an economist in training, his defense of the market felt a bit naive. I understand that he is advocating for the market, as opposed to the anti-market bias common in many countries of the region... yet I feel that he paints markets as the solution to all Latin American problems. I do agree that more and better structure markets would benefit the region, but one must also be aware of its limitations, specially in the often murky Latin American environment. Also, the closing statements are kind of a downer... many words, not really a lot of substance.
