Ewa K. Czaczkowska PhD about herself:

"I am a journalist and a historian writing books.
My most recent book, of 2015, is The Pope Who Believed. How Karol Wojtyła Persuaded the Church to Worship the Divine Mercy, [PL: Papież, który uwierzył. Jak Karol Wojtyła przekonał Kościół do kultu Bożego Miłosierdzia].

I wrote ‘Miracles of Saint Faustina’ and it was presented on the press conference in Warsaw on 29th May. The book is a collection of reportages about people who were saved by Divine Mercy. It saved their lives and health, helped to release from spiritual addictions, bad habits, helped to become parents… The stories do not finish only with the miracle which was a turning point in the characters’ lives but have a continuation, not always an easy one. This is my first journalistic book but I used to publish reportages in various journals in the past.

I have already written three biographies. The biography of Saint Faustina was translated into eight languages - the Polish premiere of this book was in April 2012. The Association of Catholic Publishers awarded it with the Feniks Prize.

Cardinal Wyszyński’s biography had two editions. The latest one, which was significantly extended and completed with new archival materials, was published in September 2013. This book was also appreciated by the Association of Catholic Publishers and received the Feniks Prize.

The first biography, which I have written together with Tomasz Wiścicki, was the one of father Jerzy Popiełuszko. This book had also two editions and was translated into Italian.

My first book was the collection of interviews ‘Church of the 20th Century’ which was published in autumn 1999. I received the Feniks Prize for it.

Combining history with journalism has always helped me to write biographies. When I started my historical studies and was considering to enter journalism postgraduate course I did not even realize the effects of my decision.

Writing has always been my job. I worked in Rzeczpospolita Newspaper for twenty years (I received a prestigious journalistic award the Bishop Jan Chrapek ‘Ślad’ in 2002). Nowadays I co-operate with a few journals, including the weekly ‘Gość Niedzielny’ (lit. Sunday’s Guest). I have got a Ph.D. in history. I am an adjunct instructor in Media Education and Journalism Institute. Four years ago I started Areopag XXI Foundation, which creates a web portal areopag21.pl – conversations about God, faith and religion. A Documentary Film Festival ‘Kino z Duszą’ (lit. Cinema with a Soul) is our recent project."

If you are interested in St Faustina’s life from birth to canonization, this is the book for you. There is a lot of detail about her home life, struggles to be accepted in a convent, movements around Poland, her difficulties within the convent, her humility, her confessors, and her questioning. Some may think it’s too much information but I loved it. It’s interesting to see how a seemingly normal, very human person can raise to the level of saint. This is a must read if someone is planning to go on a pilgrimage to Poland in the footsteps of St Faustina although you will have to take notes of locations. The locations jump around a bit mostly because she moves around and the book is largely chronological.

The last chapter writes of the connection with St Pope John Paul II.

The diary was questioned for many years because of a bad translation. In defense, the sister who originally translated it thought it was for her own community and didn’t realize it would be used all over the world otherwise she might have taken greater care in the translation. There was a notification from the Vatican to basically suppress devotion to her and to divine mercy because of this translation. Later a more accurate translation was made and the notification was revoked just 6 months before Pope St John paul ll was elected.

If it had been revoked later, it may have looked as if the new Pope was playing favorites and had streamlined the revocation and Faustina and Divine Mercy may have lost credibility. As an aside, no one could have anticipated future Pope would be the Polish cardinal. The Pope had been elected from the Italian cardinals for years. God had many surprises.

I found this book very informative.

I began the Extraordinary Year of Mercy by trying to read St. Faustina's Diary. Sadly, I struggled, and attributed my inability to make any headway due to a poor translation of the work. I mentioned my lack of success to my parish priest, who happens to be Polish, and after admitting that he had difficulties reading the text even in his (and St. Faustina's) native language, he loaned me his copy of Czaczkowska's book.

Faustina is an incredibly detailed look at the saint's life, from her infancy up to the Church's declaration and celebration of Divine Mercy Sunday, the first Sunday following Easter. Due to Czaczkowska's research and writing skills as an accomplished journalist, I learned everything I ever wanted to know about St. Faustina, her revelations, the two confessors she relied on to guide her with her visions and the theology behind the Divine Mercy.

Since St. Faustina moved around quite a bit in her order's convents, the book looks at the events of her life primarily from a geographical point of view. I thought this was an odd way of structuring a biography, but in this way Czaczkowska successfully gives us a sympathetic and fascinating account of the mystic's life.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in St. Faustina's amazing life.

My friend, a former nun who sadly passed away last year, greatly admired St. Faustina and probably prayed the Divine Mercy chaplet. In memory of my friend, I decided to read this biography. I was moved by Faustina’s struggles to be a nun, to make sense of her messages from Jesus and to promote the Divine Mercy prayer.

Long stretches of the book were frankly boring. The author would go into minute details of all the places Faustina went, and would also describe what buildings replaced those places, the railroad lines of the towns, and members of families and employers who interacted with Faustina, etc. I felt she was trying to recreate Faustina’s world - detracting from Faustina’s message to Christians.

Biography of Saint Faustina written with great diligence and attention to details. Ms Ewa K. Czaczkowska did a great deal of work, by conducting reliable, journalistic investigation, so that we can learn the hard way to the sanctity, one of the greatest mystics of the Church.

I loved this book - there were things about St. Faustina and her life and mission that I hadn't read in any other book. Beautiful, each book and work I read adds a little more about her, her heart and spirit, her life and mission that help to show the complete picture of who She was.
