Lucas Bleyle, when not writing books is nowhere to be found. He is somewhere in the woods with a group of friends from dawn to dusk, cobbling together a fort. He also enjoys such things as the satisfaction of popping open an umbrella, seeing people nodding along while he speaks, and listening to uncontrolled saxophone duets. Lucas, now 14, lives in Ames, Iowa, with his parents, four siblings, two dogs, a cat, a fair amount of mice, and the occasional fellow crashed on the couch. He completed The Scavengers as an eighth grader and it is his first novel.
I want to make sure Lucas knows how much I appreciated his writing. I have taught creative writing; he did SUCH a great job! I often stopped and reminded myself that the author was a teenager. In fact, he was an 8th grader when he wrote this book. It is in the genre of Star Wars, Divergent, and Hunger Games. I could easily see a movie made from this novel!
I like to mark parts of books that strike me as I am reading (so I can return later to re-read favorite parts.) My first marked passage was on Pg. 17 where he explained the Bargemen, Nomads, and the City Folks. Lucas helped me understand the structure of the planet clearly. On pg. 111, we are introduced to NAWC and Zane's father. Pg. 114 -- explanation of the "boxes" sent. The author shows very deep thoughts, like on Pg. 244 "To pass another creature to whom you can easily give help is unacceptable no matter who you are." Pg. 270 "NAWC abandoned over 3 billion people on Earth.... like a communist dictatorship." Pg. 276 The 14 yr old main character reminded me of the 14 yr old author as he described the detailed technology like auto-retracting blankets, motion sensors, super shower, self-doctor, etc. He ends with deep thoughts about the "moral of the story" -- "no matter what happens, you can fix it."
