The Doña #1

The Doña

Rate this book
She bolted toward the center of the room only to freeze again. There was a second man she hadn’t seen standing in the shadows who slowly pulled a large knife from his belt as she backed toward the wall.
“Fiesty little bitch, ain’t you?” He took a cautious step toward her as she slid along the wall feeling for something to fight with. “This is gonna hurt real bad.” Leonida let out an ear-splitting scream as he raised the knife.

She came to California as a young bride in an arranged marriage. Now she owns seventy-five square miles of property bordering the Mokelumne River where gold has been discovered. They want her land and will stop at nothing, even if it means her murder.

Major is a Southern California native who currently lives in Northern California with his wife and editor, Judy. He is an avid outdoorsman who enjoys writing fiction based on actual history, as well as children's books and contemporary romance.
Best described as a “nice guy,” Major Mitchell is a former pastor, and credits his writing abilities to eight years of writing sermons three times a week. (In truth, he actually began by writing and illustrating comic books as a child). His conversational style immediately engages the reader. He has developed an uncanny eye for detail, while creating characters believable enough for the reader to feel that they know them. His ability to create tension will have you turning page after page.
A member of Western Writers of America and a frequent guest speaker at historical meetings and schools on the West Coast, he has also written several songs, recorded a CD of traditional country/folk music, and occasionally takes the stage as a singer. He lives with his wife Judy and their dog Molly in Northern California.

Major Mitchell is the author of thirteen novels, including Canyon Wind, an epic novel of life in the South Dakota Badlands circa 1880, and the Dusty Boots in Texas series, among others. He has also written three children’s books.

Lots of action

In the beginning there is a lot of information on the customs of the Mexican culture, there is a lot of action and sadness. There is a lot of drama and violence but the story line is interesting. And this is the first book I read of this author but will continue because I want to see what the Dona does next.

The Dona fictionally documents an era of California history which is obscured by the mists of time and lack of documentation...bringing it to vivid life! Any reader of conscience will be moved to leap into the story and attempt to intervene on behalf of the heroine and her (fortunately!) large circle of talented supporters. I WAS starting to think the bad guys would never get their comeuppance...

This contained an examination into the different lifestyles and classes back in that era, very well researched, and keeps the readers interest !
