Kenning Hall was more than a country home, it was a sanctuary away from London, until that day.

What happened that day was so horrifying, so devastating, that the place was left to ruin, until now.

A decade later, thirty-two year old Rupert Harrison, the only surviving heir to the Harrison publishing dynasty, has ordered Kenning Hall restored to its former glory.

It's time to go back.

Now, if you think you've heard this story before, think again, for this is just the beginning.

Something is waiting at Kenning Hall.
Something vengeful, malevolent, and it will follow them home.

The most ridiculous book - complete with preposterous coincidences, truly appalling dialogue (a would-be rapist is actually quoted saying "me likey") and two female leads who do nothing but get into mind numbingly stupid situations, yelling "Noooooooooo, somebody help me!". All watched over by the creepy disembodied blue eyes of a long drowned baby brother, who seems remarkably annoyed about something. All in all, deeply amusing, but not perhaps for the intended reasons.

This felt like 4 stories that never tied themselves properly together.

irritating

Endless subplots that fail to weave together in any satisfying way. The ending doesn’t feel like an ending, I kept looking for things to come full circle or even make some sense of the random side excursions of the main plot. Anything of any import seems to happen two thirds of the way through the book, which is tediously long. Seriously in need of editing. There are also words missing/sentences that don’t make sense. It feel like there is a good story in there somewhere but it needs someone the come along and prune way all the extraneous and unnecessary waffle. The story also suffers from an identity crisis; is it a ghost story? A romance? A corporate intrigue? Psychological thriller? I can’t believe I made it to the end, I nearly gave up several times. 3* because there is a good book on there somewhere…

I'm about a third of the way through this audiobook. The story itself is excellent! Really good. Makes you jump, makes you think ...

The only criticism that I have is the narration. The author (talented chap clearly) is NOT the person to be reading this book! Completely inappropriate. He should be proud of the story he's created - but he should have taken a step back and allowed someone with the skill to tell his story.

Don't be put off - its a great story, which is why I've given it four stars. But for me, its not a 5 star

Brilliantly Haunting Tale

Another great book from Tony Marturano. He really explores his characters and they come to life and occasionaly death, within the pages. Highly recommended

Awful. The sex scenes were excruciating. Badly written and just didn't grab me. Gave in quarter of the way through.

This book had so much potential, although:

We have a ghost of a 13 year old child that aged and is now an adult ghost… what?
The tv reporter that started investigating the mysterious deaths and coincidences on the building… that would have been a good story, although we finished the book without knowing what actually happened. Was the building cursed? Was there a ghost living there? Many ghosts?
Was the ghost trapped in the painting? Why?
Was Keri killed in her flat?
Why was the ghost chasing Ashley? It had been quiet for 20 years until she showed up in the Estate House…
Who was the ghost with the long jacket in Heron Heights? Did he kill the wee boy?
The story about Jacky… what was the connection to the rest of the book? Which ghost killed her? Where was the pen drive she claimed to have hid in her bedroom?
Who trashed Ashley’s flat?
Also, there’s no likeable character.
Were the sex scenes supposed to make this a sexy ghost story? Failed that too.
This is a very long book, where half of the chapters could have been deleted as they added nothing to the story. Only made it more confusing. It felt like this were 4 books merged in one, but none had a start nor an ending. Let’s just throw some ideas into one big book and hope people like it…
Also, quite ironic that the book is about a publisher who is solid selecting the books they publish. I’m pretty sure Ashley wouldn’t let this one reach the printing room.
Oh, not to mention the corporate drama…

This book has so many plot holes. And it’s a shame, because if the writer had focused in one of the stories and untangled it properly, it could have been a really nice and spooky book. Or even four. Four separate stories/books.

Incredible as always

This writer has a wonderful ability to draw you in and make you feel like you are there, within the scenes of the story. I like his imagination and the unpredictability of his novels. The characters are well thought out and you find yourself caring, strongly, for their wellbeing.
The only criticism would be, was that there was a slightly disparaging remark about a character, in that he was right wing. I was disappointed because the heavy sense of the world today, the very divided political beliefs and the depressing state of things makes me want to run for cover of an evening into a world that isn't tainted by the reality of what is constantly pushed our way by the media. I've noticed authors taking their stance of late with subtle comments and I wish that they'd remember that all types of people, whatever their beliefs buy and read their books. Making such comments will not change a reader's view but merely spoil the sense of escapism.

4 Stars from me.

Having recently had the pleasure of being part of the 'reader's group' for upcoming Novel, Psychosis, I knew I had to set about reading the back catalogue of the ever so talented Mr Marturano.

One of the others at the group said to me 'If you like being scared, you'll love Unspeakable.'

How could I not read it after that?

I didn't know what to expect, I've taken a slightly odd stance recently of not reading the fly cover or a synopsis before starting a book. I am not yet sure if this is a good idea but it's what I'm going with for now!

I found Unspeakable to almost be a book of two parts. The beginning was introductory, scene building, drawing me into the lives and minds of the key characters. Characterisation, as I would fully expect, was excellent. Well defined people came to life on pages before me as I read. The descriptive powers of Tony Marturano are really quite excellent - buildings, rooms, people, sensations and feelings are all clear and distinct.

Just when you get comfortable with this world, the tension changes. Stupidly (or maybe not) for me, I read the majority of the second half of the book at night... I know a book or film as got into my mind when I find that I don't want to switch off the bedroom light and walk 10 feet to bed in darkness!

This is a deliciously dark and malevolent read. If you like a book with twists and surprises, you will like this book. If you like a book to make you feel uneasy, jump when you hear a noise, question whether or not you locked the back door, you will like this book!

Did I like the ending?

Because I know, if Tony reads this, he will welcome feedback:

Length - just right!
Characters - vivid and real.
Favourite character - Rupert.
Least favourite character - Elisabeth/Adam.
Favourite place - Heron Heights.
Was I scared - yes.
Buzz words (sadly not in a useful order): Intrigued, interested, scared, safe, envious, uncomfortable, peril, deceit, protection, fear.

I'm speechless!

Probably the best supernatural suspense I've read ever.

You think you have it all figured out, but you don't. I was left with a dropped jaw and surprisingly speechless! In a majorly good way!

There's a good story in there somewhere, but it never came together. Also, very annoying, so many spelling mistakes, typos, grammatical errors etc... ironic really given that it's partly set in a publishing house!! They would not have lost this one through.

A tale that lures you in quietly to the countryside, slowly bewitching, until it digs its claws in and takes you back to the cave of inner city London, shakes you around like a rag doll and spits you back out into the still of the country night without a prayer. <- Can you include that on a poster? Haha! But seriously, this book takes you everywhere and turns your spine to jelly, thoroughly horrifying and mystifying in all different ways til the very last page. Just as good as the author's strange goings on in "Nimbus", which I've read previously. Absolutely do recommend! :)
