The hold that stopped the revival bought the colony forty-five days, a single line in the record with a term at the end of it. The term is coming due.

In the first hour a child is born. Then something above the Steward wakes to review the hold. It has no voice, no face, and no place to stand. It cannot be flattered or appealed. It acts only on what is filed, and it posts its findings on the board.

The first finding is a number. The deed tolerates twelve people awake during the sleep. There are more than twelve.

Then four strangers come up out of the dust to the Lock door, alive after decades in air that should have killed them, carrying a name the colony's own records already know. Mara Quinn meets them in the throat and keeps them off the record, and every day she hides them the count gets harder to keep.

The building offers a choice, and only one. Return people to stasis by their own consent, or the deed will balance the count itself, shedding sleepers from the outer rows a term at a time until the arithmetic comes right. The air is failing on its own schedule. A pregnancy is coming to term. And every person still awake has to decide who goes back into the cold, and whether a vote can choose anyone without becoming the thing it was meant to prevent.

The fourth book of the Stasis series, a near-future science fiction thriller about debts no one agreed to, the arithmetic of mercy, and who pays when a system balances, for readers who love morally complex characters, slow-burn dread, and questions that refuse a clean answer.
