Rate this book

Biographies of political candidates are relatively rare in Israeli politics. It really is a shame. We often see memoirs of retired politicians or politicians on Sabbatical that finally have some time to write, but they are often good for sharing anecdotes and improving the legacy of that politician, and do not often serve as useful tools to evaluate whether we want to vote for them.

This book is really the opposite. A biography, an autobiography, and a manifest, all at once. I wish other candidates would provide me, with this level of clarity, what I found in this book:
1. Your biography and identity.
2. Your core values and beliefs, and how your biography shaped your core values and beliefs.
3. How your actions demonstrated these core values.
4. What has changed, what did you learn from past mistakes, how did past events reshape your beliefs.
5. What do you propose to do if and when you're elected.

I think this book is beautifully written and edited. Ari Shavit used over 100 hours of conversations with Bennett to produce a coherent document which explicitly describes all of the above and is direct and easy to read.

I can't say I believe every word as it is still a political candidate. But I do feel like I know him better than I know any other candidate at this point, and I wish I would have more documents like this to evaluate other candidates.

I am aware that other politicians prefer to invest their precious campaign time in talking in various podcasts. I think it's definitely better than giving brief media interviews, but podcasts usually last 60-90 minutes, out of which at least 15 minutes are being spent on responding to current events which are irrelevant for the big picture. And even if I do want to spend hours listening to this candidate, and I go and listen to 5 of these 60-minute podcasts, the candidate pretty much talks about the same things but to a different interviewer, which does not allow the same depth and clarity.

Anyway, I don't think many people will have a chance to still read this book before the upcoming elections (in 4 days) but it may still be valuable later. Above all, this book can serve as a great reference on how to present a candidate and his manifest.
