വായിച്ചു കഴിയുമ്പോൾ, കഴിഞ്ഞുപോയല്ലോയെന്ന് സങ്കടം തോന്നുന്നതരം പുസ്തകങ്ങളിലൊന്നാണ് ബുൿസ്റ്റാൾജിയ. പുസ്തകങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള ഒരോർമ്മപ്പുസ്തകമാണിത്. പഴയ ആ റഷ്യൻ പുസ്തകങ്ങളേയും ചിത്രകഥകളേയും ഡിറ്റക്റ്റീവ് നോവലുകളേയുമൊക്കെ പറ്റിയുള്ള കുറിപ്പുകൾ വായിച്ചാൽ ഒരു കാലത്തിന്റെ മണവും നിറവുമൊക്കെ ഉന്തിത്തള്ളിവരും മനസ്സിൽ. അച്ചടിയുടെ രേഖപ്പെടുത്താതെപോയ ചരിത്രത്തിലേക്കുള്ള എത്തിനോക്കലുകളായ ലേഖനങ്ങളിലൂടെ കടന്നുപോവുമ്പോൾ ആ പുണ്യാത്മാക്കളെ രേഖപ്പെടുത്തി വെക്കാത്ത പാപത്തിന്റെ പങ്ക് എനിക്കുമുണ്ടല്ലോയെന്ന ജാള്യതയനുഭവപ്പെടും, പുസ്തകപ്രസിദ്ധീകരണം നഷ്ടക്കച്ചവടമായിരുന്ന, യാത്രാസൗകര്യങ്ങളേതുമില്ലാത്ത കാലത്ത് മലയാള പുസ്തകമച്ചടിക്കാൻ വേണ്ടി മാത്രം കോഴിക്കോടുനിന്ന് തിരുവനന്തപുരത്തേക്കും തിരിച്ചും യാത്ര ചെയ്ത ആ തമിഴന്മാരായ അച്ഛനെയും മകനെയുമോർത്ത് അത്ഭുതം കൂറൂം. ശ്രീകണ്ഠേശ്വരത്തോടും മറ്റ് പലരോടും നാം ചെയ്ത നന്ദികേടോർത്ത് തല കുനിയും.

The name of the book is an indication of where things will head once we get introduced to the author’s writing style. In his foreword to the book, Rajasekharan writes that the book is an amalgamation of his bibliomania and nostalgia that has enriched his life over decades. Bookstalgia is a collection of articles previously published as a column in the Mathrubhoomi newspaper in Malayalam.
Most books that I have read about the life and times of Malayalam literature is limited in scope when it comes to examining the evolution of books. The reason being that they restrict themselves to mainstream and we hear the same old stories over and over again. There is however a lesser known world behind these titans, a world full of forgotten heroes and marginalized writers who have contributed immensely to the development of a bookish world. While most malayalis know Thunchathu Ezhuthachan, O. Chanthu Menon or C. V. Raman Pillai ( all of whom have been pioneers in Malayalam literature) no one remembers the man who first brought out the most comprehensive Malayalam dictionary named Shabdathaaravali. His name was Sreekanteswaram Padmanabha Pillai and even after singlehandedly completing this mammoth task, he passed away unrecognized.
Another notable person is Vidwan K Prakasham who again was a single man army and slogging all by himself he translated the entire Mahabharata to prose. You are talking about translating 200,000 individual verse lines from Sanskrit to Malayalam and that too from poem to prose for this assignment! He even took out money from his own pocket to get this version into print. A few years back the major Malayalam publishing house D.C. Books published the entire set but Prakasham was by then a remote memory. A lot many such men ( and a few women) toiled tirelessly and selflessly for setting down the first building blocks for printing, publishing and writing in Malayalam and ironically all of them have been forgotten by the masses now. Rajasekharan’s articles are a homage to these pioneers and a look at how bland the world of Malayalam literature would have been without them.
There is a highbrow mind-set that has seeped into the overall way Malayalam literature views some of its peers. The author himself calls this the caste system of literature where at the bottom of the pyramid dwells genre fiction. Genres of the ilk of fantasy, horror and thrillers have all been pushed out to the wastelands and the doors have been closed firmly on them. While it is true that some of them are truly atrocious, it is rather unfair to treat them like they never existed. Over the space of three chapters Rajasekharan explores his tryst with Indian comics during his childhood, pulp fiction during his adolescence and of how inevitably they all disappeared into oblivion with the entry of Television into households. All things disappear over time but the book is here to stay or so thinks the author. He is a proponent of the book over e-book as he explores this argument in his final chapter.
Refined and dignified language that flows effortlessly and talks about a delightful topic : books. Recommended !

മലയാളപുസ്തകചരിത്രത്തിന്റെ അധികമാരും എത്തിനോക്കാത്ത ഇടനാഴികളിലൂടെയുള്ള ഒരു നടപ്പാണീ പുസ്തകം. അവിടെ വായനക്കാരനു വഴികാട്ടിയായി ഗൃഹാതുരനായ എഴുത്തുകാരനും ഒപ്പമുണ്ട്. നമ്മുടേത് മാത്രമെന്ന് നാം കരുതിയ ഗൃഹാതുരതകള് പലതും പലരുടേതും കൂടിയാണെന്ന തിരിച്ചറിവ് ഇടനാഴികളുടെ വളവിലും തിരിവിലുമൊക്കെ വെച്ച് പലര്ക്കും തോന്നിയേക്കാം. കാല്പനികമായ അത്തരം ദീര്ഘനിശ്വാസങ്ങളേക്കാള് പക്ഷേ എനിയ്ക്ക് താത്പര്യം തോന്നിയത് അധികമാരും തിരഞ്ഞിട്ടില്ലാത്ത മലയാളത്തിന്റെ അച്ചടിചരിത്രാഖ്യാനത്തില് തന്നെയായിരുന്നു.
ആകെമൊത്തം ഒരു നല്ല വായന സാധിച്ചു.

ബുക്സ്റ്റാൾജിയയിൽ എഴുത്തുകാരന്റെ ഗൃഹാതുരത്വമുണ്ട്. ത്യാഗികളുടെ കദനകഥയുണ്ട്. സാഹസികരുടെ പ്രയാണങ്ങളുണ്ട്. മലയാളിയുടെ നന്ദികേടുകളുടെ ഒരു പരമ്പര തന്നെയുണ്ട്. പൂർണമായി ഒരു ചരിത്രപുസ്തകമല്ലെങ്കിൽക്കൂടി, ബുക്സ്റ്റാൾജിയയിലെ പല ലേഖനങ്ങളിലും കേരളത്തിലെ അച്ചടിയുടെയും പ്രസാധനത്തിന്റെയും അധികം പറഞ്ഞുകേട്ടിട്ടില്ലാത്ത സാംസ്കാരിക ചരിത്രം കാണാൻ കഴിയും. അച്ചടിയുടെ ചരിത്രവും അരികുകളുടെ പുസ്തകങ്ങളും കൂടാതെ ചില വായനാശീലങ്ങളും ബുക്സ്റ്റാൾജിയ പങ്കുവെയ്ക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. പുസ്തകങ്ങളുടെ അരികുകളിൽ എഴുതുന്ന ശീലത്തെയും മാർജിനാലിയയുടെ പ്രസിദ്ധവും രസകരങ്ങളുമായ കഥകളും ഏറെ ശ്രദ്ധേയമാണ്. ഓർമകളിലൂടെയും മറവിലൂടെയും സഞ്ചരിക്കുന്ന ബുക്സ്റ്റാൾജിയ മലയാളിയുടെ സാംസ്കാരികചരിത്രത്തിലേക്ക് ഉള്ള അന്വേഷണം കൂടിയാണ്. ഇത് ഗൃഹാതുരത്വം ആണെങ്കിൽ അത് എഴുത്തുകാരന്റെ മാത്രമല്ല, വായനക്കാരന്റെ കൂടിയാണ്.

ഒരു വായനക്കാരനെന്ന നിലയിൽ എനിക്ക് എന്റെ ചിന്തകളുമായി വളരെയധികം റിലേറ്റ് ചെയ്യാൻ സാധിച്ച ഒരു പുസ്തകം.. പുസ്തകവായന ഇത്തിരി സീരിയസായ കാലത്ത് ഞാൻ ചോദിച്ചിരുന്ന, അച്ചടിയുടെ ചരിത്രം സംബന്ധിച്ചുള്ള, പല ചോദ്യങ്ങൾക്കും ഉത്തരം നൽകിയ ഒരു പുസ്തകം. മറന്നുപോയേക്കാമായിരുന്ന പലതും ഓർമ്മിപ്പിച്ച ഒരു പുസ്തകം.. ഏതൊരു പുസ്തകപ്രേമിയും തീർച്ചയായും വായിച്ചിരിക്കേണ്ട ഒന്നു്..

മലയാള പുസ്തക പ്രസാധനത്തിന്റെ ഇന്നലകളിലേക്ക് വായനക്കാരനെ കൂട്ടികൊണ്ട് പോകുന്ന ഗ്രൻഥം. മലയാളത്തിൽ ആദ്യമായി അച്ചടിച്ച ഗ്രൻഥം 'സംക്ഷേപവേദാർഥം' ആണെന്ന് എത്ര പേർക്കറിയാം. പതിനെട്ടാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൽ ഇറ്റലിയിൽ നിന്നുള്ള കർമലീത്താ വൈദികർ റോമിൽ നിന്നാണ് ഈ പുസ്തകം പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചത്. മഹാഭാരതം പദാനുപദമായി മലയാളത്തിലേക്ക് വിവർത്തനം ചെയ്തു പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ച വിദ്വാൻ പ്രകാശത്തിനെയും, ശബ്ദതരാവലിയുടെ കർത്താവായ ശ്രീകണ്ടേശ്വരം പിള്ളയെയും ഞാൻ പരിചയപ്പെട്ടത് ഈ പുസ്തകത്തിൽ നിന്നുമാണ്. പ്രസാധനത്തെകുറിച്ചു മാത്രമല്ല വായനയുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട പല നൊസ്റ്റാൾജിക് അനുഭവങ്ങളും വളരെ ഹൃദ്യമായി അവതരിപ്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. മലയാളികളുടെ ബംഗാളി നോവലുകളോടുള്ള അഭിനിവേശം,ഡൽഹിയിലെ സെക്കന്റ് ഹാൻഡ് ബുക്ക് വിപണി, നൊസ്റ്റാൾജിക് പാഠാ പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ എന്നിങ്ങനെ രസകരമായി വായിച്ചുപോകാൻ കഴിയുന്ന കുറേയേറേ കുറിപ്പുകൾ ഇതിലുണ്ട്. പുസ്തകങ്ങളെ കുറിച്ചുള്ള പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ മലയാളത്തിൽ കുറവാണ്. അതു���ൊണ്ട് തന്നെ സ്വീകരിക്കപ്പെടേണ്ട ഒരു പുസ്തകം ആണിത്.
