Out of Body is Book One in the Out of Body Series, but can be read as a standalone!
Out of Body is a fast-paced supernatural thriller with dark humor, emotional twists, and just enough heart to haunt you.
Perfect for fans of: Warm Bodies, My Best Friend’s Exorcism, Ghost, Dead Like Me, and The Good Place.
Christopher John Chater is the author of the novels The Traveler's Companion, Omegasphere, Aquarius Rising, Out of Body, and the award winning series, Dating in the Apocalypse. He was born in Burbank, California, but has lived all over, the East Coast, the West Coast, and the South. He's worked in several industries, a production assistant in the film industry, a song plugger in the music industry, and a bartender and server in the hospitality industry. He now lives in San Diego and writes full time.
If that first line doesn't get your attention, then nothing will. Out of Body starts as the story of one Harley Baker, who experienced death as a pre-teen. Ten years later, he is obsessed with death and what happened to him when he died. While trying to recreate it with an Out of Body Experience, ie. astral projection, Harley gets stuck in the ether when a demon sees the vacancy and decides it's welcome to the neighborhood time.
22 year old Harley lost his parents in a car crash when he was 12, a crash that changed his life in more ways than one. We join Harley 10 years later at university as he searches for answers regarding the afterlife and the white light he saw on the night of the crash.
Death is a key theme and helps to immediately hook the reader from the start- 'I died that day. Twice.' Harley's need to uncover the truth about the afterlife leads to drama and the destruction of the life he has built for himself. His quirky style of humour had me in stitches at times and made him a rather likable character. When he succeeded in his trials, I felt as though I'd shared in that success. The same applies to Harley's failings.
Out of Body is a dark, gripping read that talks in depth about astral projection, a unique ability whereby someone can leave their own body and have their spirit travel in the astral realm. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment and would gladly read this book again and again.
My rating: 5 stars. I would recommend this to lovers of dark fantasy and thrillers.
I’m actually very excited to write a review for this book. Not only was it wildly creative and imaginative, it was dark and portrayed a more sinister side of fiction without including blood soaked deaths and detailed rape scenes. I mean, I don’t shy away from blood and violence but it’s nice to see something so dark written so cleanly. So compliments to the author on that note alone.
My second compliment would be to the main character’s name; Harley Baker. I don’t know how everyone else feels but I think that’s a very pretty name—even prettier because the main character is actually a male. I have no idea why but I always love it when male leads have unisex names. So Harley isn’t just cool because he’s the main character, he’s actually a nice guy. A little obsessed with death and slightly gloomy in that ‘cool’ way since he lost his parents in a tragic accident—but I like him. Really, I do.
Harley is very well layered and he’s easy to identify with, not just because we’re stuck with him as the protagonist but because he gives a reason to like him. I feel for Harley, I’ve never been stuck on the other side of the life force spectrum watching as a demon lived out my life and dated my boyfriend and got me great grades but you know…life gets tough for me sometimes too.
What I mean is, Harley does more than represent the guy you’re supposed to root for. He is the ‘good’ in the story. His character is believable and determined to do the right thing, which isn’t very hard to portray when the antagonist is a demon but you know…it’s done very well and it plays out nicely.
The other characters are developed well. Not all of them are integral to the plot but they are very realistic which is something that Chater seems to have mastered. No one was ever ‘over the top’ or portrayed in a way that didn’t fit with the rest of the cast. The dialogue matched the characters as well as their age. That’s probably one of the things I loved most about this story, just having the feeling that all of these people could be real somewhere. That’s how well developed and believable they were—the entire cast, not just Harley.
The inclusion of religion was somewhat inevitable—which I didn’t mind at all. I mean what do you expect when you have demons running amuck? I wasn’t expecting the satanic worshipping but I did learn a thing or two about it from reading and I must say, Chater has done his research. I always appreciate an author who can teach me a thing or two about something I’ve never heard or read about before—even if it isn’t necessarily something that interests me. Chater incorporated his themes very easily and in a way that kept the story moving. When you have to explain things it can easily become an info-dump but thankfully, I didn’t bump into any of those.
I liked the fact that Harley was possessed by a demon but still narrated the story from the ‘other side’ at first it was a little confusing but once I got used to the style of narration the story flowed very smoothly. This is definitely a unique book that I think will pick up more readers as time passes by. It is something that fans of demonology will definitely enjoy, dark fantasy, supernatural, and even some YA fans may want to grab a copy.

Out of Body opens with a bit of a mystery and keeps going, full speed, from there. Harley, a twelve-year-old boy, is in a car accident with his parents, and all three die—until Harley is brought back to life. Just before the accident, Harley’s mother gives him a silver star necklace and tells him to never take it off. Fast forward ten years and his best friend Darren rips the necklace off Harley’s neck, thinking it’s just a silly New Age piece of jewelry. From there, Harley continues an obsession with out-of-body experiences (astral projection), having been close to death and longing to return to that otherworldly state. Unfortunately, Harley, unprotected and not knowing some important things about his past and his parents, becomes stuck in the astral world while a demon steps into his physical body and assumes his life. The demon entices Darren, begins a romantic relationship with the girl Harley is interested in, and does some funky things to Harley’s bank account. Stuck, Harley can only watch helplessly while the demon destroys his life and his relationships.
There are quite a few vivid and imaginative scenes in this book. In astral projection, Harley is able to travel to other places in the world, and he can see every person in his life without their knowledge. He can also see demons, which is interesting, as they appear in unlikely places. Harley tells his tale from the perspective of a brooding college-aged boy, and he is easy to identify with and has a strong voice and unique demeanor. Having said that, it was difficult to understand why his best friend Darren would believe Harley’s personality changed so much and so quickly after the demon stepped in and took over. I don’t believe Darren was meant to be a likable character, but I do believe he was Harley’s friend long enough to notice the abrupt change. Stephanie—Harley’s love interest—also went back and forth from being a likable working girl to a shallow girl who was interested in Harley’s demon impostor for his money. Still, Harley’s voice and the intriguing plot was enough to save the story.
Overall, Out of Body is a quick read and moves along at a good pace, never once straying from the plot. I would recommend the book to paranormal/supernatural fans or anyone who enjoys fast-paced reads with edgier occult story lines.
When Harley was 12, he was in a terrible car crash. His parents died instantly, and he also died while on scene. At one point, he was pulled toward "the light," which was a comforting place for him -- he found happiness there. To his dismay, someone in the light told him it wasn't his time and sent back to his body to live.
Because of reaching that light, Harley grew up fascinated by the afterlife. He didn't want to kill himself and end up going to hell, but he searched for ten years for alternative means of getting back to the light.
Harley finds a book at the library on astral projection, where the spirit can leave the body to explore the world without being attached -- an out of body experience or "OBE."
Harley wants to try astral projection, but is skeptical that it will work. Despite the book's warnings about protecting the body before projecting, he leaps into it and finds that he can successfully do it!
He leaves his body in his apartment and his spirit begins exploring around the world. He's having a wonderful time!
However, once he returns for his body, he finds that it's not where he left it... It's up and moving around, and someone else's spirit is in it.
He soon finds that his body is possessed by a demon called Horace.
Horace sets motions in place that threaten Harley's best friend , Darren, and the girl he's had a crush on for six months, Stephanie.
Harley has to figure out how to get Horace out of his body and take it back for himself, before his spirit fully detaches from it and leaves Harley stranded in the spirit world.
Favorite quotes:
- "I died that day. Twice." - “A spell?” I said, laughing. “You can’t be serious. You’re telling me spells are real?”“You realize you’re a spirit, currently residing in the astral plane, and talking with another spirit whose earthly vessel died decades ago. You jive with that, right? You might want to suspend your skepticism, man.” - "...it’s more of a tearing...a shiiish, then a schaaawk, and then a crich cha! Then, po-pow! A razzle, a shimmy, then po-pow again!"
Final thoughts:
I feel like I need to give an obligatory warning -- this book has darkness to it that could be a trigger for some people.
WARNING: There is a dark theme, with demons and cult worship. There are mentions of rituals, violence, and rape.
I don't mind a good dark theme, and really enjoyed this book. That said, I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, hence the above warning. If the warning doesn't give you pause, great! This book could be for you.
There is excellent world building, fantastic characters, and a great story. The plot is unique, the characters are likable (I adored Stephanie), and there is great voice.
It's a fascinating, creative story, and I was so interested that I read it in one sitting.

MY REVIEW: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Harley and his friends are not the most likable bunch. Harley doesn't start out with much of an appreciation for life despite being given a second chance at it. Stephanie is a bit of a doofus, as she isn't able to tell when Harley has been taken over by a demon, and his best friend is selfish and money hungry. Perhaps it's because they're young and dumb, but they are the perfect targets of a demon like Horace.
This is imaginative and fun. I particularly liked the other spirit trapped in the astral plane, a poor hippy who'd traversed there during a drug trip and gotten stuck. He was helpful yet funny and added a charming element to the story.
Harley's character arc is well-done. He grows from a cynical, self-absorbed, well, brat into a young man with an appreciation for life and others. Chaters writes with humor and a delightful cynicism.
Out of Body, by Christopher John Chater, is a horror romance that, through Harley, tells the story of a bloodstained legacy filled with demonic possession, bittersweet humor, and sacrifice.
Harley is a college student who is obsessed with death, especially astral plane. He manages to move into the plane and explores the wonders of being without a body. However, when he returns, he finds a demon named Horace possessing his body. After a humorous day of following Horace around, including seeing it acing a test and wooing the girl of his dreams, Harley finds out about a dark satanic cult he has mysterious connections to. Relying on his friend, Stephanie, he faces off against his family’s dark legacy, while trying to not get consumed in the process.
I liked the development between Stephanie and Harley. Not only did Chater show why the two fit together, but he also demonstrates the actions they are willing to go for their loved ones. The relationship is, ironically, more realistic than most of the relationships I read in romance novels. The atmosphere also had a sick sense of humor that I found endearing. The relationship between Harley and Darren, the somewhat awkward crush between he and Stephanie, and finally, the sickening connection Harley shares with Horace adds to the growing character development Harley has. As he follows the macabre clues and tries to warn his friends, he cracks through that eerie peaceful air, and follows the nightmare below. The air correlated with the cult that Horace leads, promising peace through death, and it was something I enjoyed in the story.
I did wish the ending would have clearer and more fleshed out; I would’ve loved to see what happened to Darren and Stephanie. Nonetheless, this was a good read, filled with humor and horror, along with an eerie sense of peace. I would give this book a rating of a 3.8 out of 5 stars, and would recommend this to readers who enjoy the decadence of the rich.
In depth review will be available on theantleredcrown.weebly.com.
Wow. Just wow.
I must admit, I had no idea what to expect when going into this read but once I started, I couldn't put it down. At first, I thought I might be facing an Insidious spin-off but was I pleasantly surprised.
The plot was so unique, I couldn't stop until I finished it. Binge read it in one sitting.
Really one of my only complaints was the lack of character development. The story moved so quickly, I wanted to see the characters grow a bit more and maybe some love between Harley and Stephanie.
A delightful supernatural thriller indeed. I was very impressed.
I received a copy of this for a fair and honest review. I am always up for something strange and unusual. The theme of death and the astral plane is thick in this novel. Harley is still trying to deal with the death of his parents from years ago. So this leads to experiment with OBE and the astral plane that gives him some mixed results. It did kind of leave me with a few question. I wanted to know more about the demon seemed only kind of touch on the subject. It was a good read overall.
This book is so exciting to read! I couldn't wait: I had to finish. I pray there will be sequels. It is about a young man who lost his parents in a horrific car accident when he was 12. He reads about astral travel, and while out of body, someone takes over his physical body and he can't get back in.
His best friend and the girl he is crushing over get involved with the new (billionaire) him. He recruits help to try to get his body back. In the process, he learns some not so nice things about his childhood.
This is an edge-of-your-seat joyride!!!!! It pulls some G's and has you feeling as if you were having an out-of-body experience of your own. There are no lulls; it just keeps bombarding you with excitement. There are some hilarious moments, some disgusting (yet equally funny) moments, but never a dull one! If you are into the occult type of book, you will most definitely love this. It is not meant to be serious and somber. It truly is a joyride from start to finish.
Thank you to Mr. Chater for giving me a free ARC book to read and give my honest review.
I received this book from librarything for a review. Out of Body is an imaginative page-turner that had me biting mu nails the entire time. I have not read a book in a while where I just wanted to jump into it and help the characters achieve their goals. The author was able to begin at a moderate pace and gradually picked it up until I was literally on the edge of my seat wondering how everything was going to get resolved with only 20 pages or so left. He also left the ending where, as a reader, I felt that if he wrote another book I would love it but I don’t have to have one. I only mention this because I have rarely seen in modern literature an ending crafted the way this author has that has had that effect on me. Keep up the good work and I would definitely recommend this book for anyone looking for an edge of the seat thriller.
Harley's parents die in a horrible accident when he is a child. He almost dies himself and leaves his body. After a glimpse of the other side he is revived. Now obsessed with death. Ten years later, he take part in an OBE experiment, but it goes wrong and a demon takes over his body. Can he get it back? Strong lead characters, Harley is an intriguing character and you can see why he developed his obsession. I think it was a good story and it kept me hooked. I would definitely recommend it.
As a person that reads well over 100 books a year, impressing me is not something many authors do any more. Chris Chater, has indeed impressed me. His characters are believable and his plot is well thought out and engaging. I certainly hope he continues the adventures of Harley in future books. I will definitely be talking about this book in the weeks to come. I will also be recommending it to friends.
Great story!! This is a great story I loved everything about it. The storyline is great, the characters are great and well defined, the flow of the story is smooth and keeps you hanging on to every word. Great Read!!!
I enjoyed reading it. It was a fast pace, which I was more than happy about. Although I rated 3 stars, I am very much intrigued in astral projection and demons. I definitely am going to look in to the next book to the series.
When I first started this novel, I was a little confused about what the heck I was reading. Couple of college kids sitting around obsessing about death. All I could think was “what the heck is this?” Holy Doom and Gloom Harley Baker! Most people who are given a second chance at life are usually grateful. Not this brooding college kid. Pfft! So let’s ignore the rules of astral projection, do it your way and then get booted out of your body by a demon host.
As a Spiritual Wiccan, this protagonist and his noobian (I know that this isn’t a real word but it suits the description) actions had me face-palming through out the book. Be careful what doors you open!
The story was awesome though. A little slow and odd at the beginning but I stuck it out and was well rewarded for my patience. Harley, before Astral Projection Gone Wrong, was a hopelessly dreary chap. I am glad that he learned, while being stuck in the Astral plane, to enjoy life because life is precious...
