Because waking up doesn’t mean the nightmare is over.
President Carver is dead. Oscar Russell is supposed to be dead too.
Sarah Stevenson is trying to put the impossible events of the last few days behind her when she receives a call from Oscar’s phone. Then shadow creatures come crashing through her apartment window.
Detective Weaver has problems of his own. He’s just woken from a coma with memories of fighting alongside Oscar in a dream that felt far too real, wounds he shouldn’t have, and the growing suspicion that something came back with him.
Their search for answers leads to a secret government program buried beneath a Los Angeles prison. They want to understand the Dreamscape. Control it. Weaponize it.
As the boundary between dreams and reality begins to fracture, Sarah, Weaver, and Oscar’s cat Ted are pulled into a fight against creatures they barely understand, an organization they can’t trust, and a power capable of killing without leaving a trace.
Sleeper Agent by Richard Ryer was a wild, imaginative ride that felt like a blend of supernatural thriller, conspiracy mystery, and nightmare-fueled adventure. I went in expecting action and suspense, but I was surprised by how invested I became in the characters and their fight to hold reality together. Sarah immediately had my attention. Just when she thinks the chaos is over, she's dragged right back into an impossible situation, and I loved how determined she remained despite being completely out of her depth. Detective Weaver was equally compelling. Waking from a coma with memories that shouldn't exist and injuries that make no sense? That's the kind of mystery that hooked me instantly. One of my favorite things about this book was the concept of the Dreamscape and the blurred line between dreams and reality. The story creates a constant sense of unease because you never know what's real, what's imagined, and what's waiting in the shadows. The government conspiracy elements added another layer of tension that kept the pages flying by. And I have to mention Ted the cat. Any book that gives a cat an important role automatically earns extra points from me. Somehow Ted manages to bring a little heart and humor to an otherwise dark and dangerous story. Overall, Sleeper Agent is a thrilling, inventive story packed with mystery, creepy dream-creatures, government secrets, and characters worth rooting for. If you enjoy supernatural thrillers that make you question reality while keeping you on the edge of your seat, this is definitely worth checking out.
While I haven’t read the first book in this trilogy, I was instantly hooked to this book which is the second in the series. The first two or three chapters did take me a minute to get the characters names down and their relationships just due to that fact but otherwise it was easy to slip into the Dreamweaver world. The chapters were short which made the reading feel like it went by quickly and made it so I didn’t want to put it down. I kept telling myself just one more chapter and ended up finishing it in 2 days time! The plot is unlike any other novel that I have read which was refreshing and kept me interested and I can’t wait until the third and final book of the series is released as Sleeper Agent left you with a major cliffhanger! Will definitely be reading the first book in the meantime as well!
I really enjoyed this book! It was very well written and seemed pretty fast paced to me. The plot lines were very good! I will say I didn’t know it was a second in a series so I was a little confused on some things that I didn’t know if they happened in the book prior but it was still a great read. Would 100% recommend
