3.5 stars--themes: trusting God, trusting others, what makes a family, making the most of the time you have
For once there's a single dad who didn't get a girl pregnant and find out about his kid years later or end up a widower. I'm kind of surprised that Jake and Marina never told their respective twins that they were being named as guardians of the children--then again, Jake and Marina probably didn't expect to die in an accident either. I admire Sam for stepping up to take care of his brother's kids. I liked his nicknames for the twin girls his brother was trying to adopt.
Sam doesn't trust God because God didn't answer his prayers to heal Naomi (his late fiancee). The death of his twin brother and sister-in-law doesn't help matters.
Kellie trusts God but has trouble trusting the love of others because of her relationship with her mother (who kept trying to make Kellie into what she wanted) and because of a guy she planned to marry whom she later found out was already married.
There are many discussions about what makes up a family because of the uncertainty about the twin girls's adoption, the loss of their "parents", the fact that Kellie's father has Alzheimer's, the fact that Kellie and her mother have a strained relationship, and the aunt and uncle who surface who want to take the twins.
The uncertainty of the girls's future and Kellie's father's Alzheimer's also play a role in discussing making the most of the time you have.
Since it's a Love Inspired book, you kind of know that things will turn out well for the main characters in the end.
I'm not sure how I missed that there was this 4th book in the 'Family Ties' series back when I read it back in 2017. I'm glad to have been able to go back to Buffalo Gap, Alberta and see some familiar faces! (As I write that, it occurs to me how weird it is to write that about a book! lol) Though the premise behind this story (and indeed, several parts of the story itself!) were quite sad, I did find it quite hopeful, overall. Despite her own personal struggles, especially with her mother, Kelly chose to have faith and hope that God's plans were good, even when she could not see that good. Though Sam did not share that same hope, I could see how much he wanted to be a blessing to his family. I liked that the romance was no insta-love thing, but that it grew naturally over the course of several months from a friendly acquaintance into friendship into more. Those are the best kind, I think! I do think that the ending chapter was too 'life tied up with a bow', so to speak, so I'm dropping my rating by half a star. 3.5 stars
This was a good book and showing how it is always best to follow God's will instead of going your own way in life. The little kids were adorable as well.
Accidental Dad by Lois Richer a Family Ties series. Sam Denver twin brother and his wife were killed in a car accident. Naming Sam and Kelly Krause the twin of the brother wife to care for the kids. They are in the process of adopting twin four year old girls. Also they had a baby boy. Sam's parents live with him in the main house on the ranch. The parents of Kelly live in the house close to the main house. That is where the children are staying so as not to mess up their schedule. Adoption place finds a elderly couple related to the twins girls. Girls don't want to go live with them. In the mean time Sam realizes he is in love with Kelly and ask her to marry him. Kelly had already fallen in love with Sam.
Of the four books in this series, this was by far my favorite! It had some funny moments and heart-wrenching moments. Probably the most emotional moment of the entire book was when the judge's decision was revealed. The author wrote the entire scene surrounding that in such a great way!
The couple that died at the beginning of this book were actually supporting characters in the first book. I remember them well as they spoke of their desire to have a baby and their love for God. That made this book just that much sadder at times. I loved the twins and that they weren't sweet little angels. I just loved all the characters in this book!
It was a sweet story, a feel good story with the predictable happy ending. Sam had to adapt to the unexpected reality of not only losing his twin brother Jake and sister in-law Marina but of raising their children by himself. That's heroic in my opinion.
Kelly, Marina's sister came to Jake's rescue and ended up finding peace, reconciliation with her mother and a man who had been in love with her for a long time: Jake. Like I said, a feel good read with just a tiny bit of drama and at times that's all I need.
"The concepts of family and repairing relationships damaged by misunderstandings are central to the plot. The secondary storyline is well developed, and the children will tug at your heartstrings" (4 stars @ RT Book Reviews).
Typically I read the Love inspired books for a pick me up in between emotional, heavier books. This one took me on more of a roller coaster of emotions than I’m used to from a love inspired and I’m not mad. I smiled, chuckled and shed tears.
