The Palestinian poet Fadwa Tuqan is a landmark of Palestinian poetry and 20th century Arabic poetry. She left us with an indubitable legacy not only as an author, but also as a human being. As with much of her poetry, the poems of this collection, July and The Other Thing, burst with powerful elegant simplicity. Her words are very carefully chosen to make the poem as concise as she can, thus giving it a more last impact when you read it. The poems here function as a chronicle. The subjects and themes vary between different moments of her life to covering the lives of Palestinians living under Israeli occupation. They are a great pleasure to read, but we also can sense her feelings of sorrow over what many Palestinians went through as she dedicates some of these poems to several famous Palestinian figures, one that really touched me is a poem dedicated to Lina Al Nabulsi, a teenager murdered by an Israeli sniper. Tuqan’s poetry also reflects her situation as a Palestinian woman, and not just a woman from Palestine. Many major literary figures consider Tuqan to be the most important Palestinian female poet, and when we read a collection like July and The Other thing, we can instantly understand why. So to those of you who love poetry, to those of you who love beautiful words, to those of you who would like to discover Palestinian literature are learn more about it, and to those of you who want to explore and more of Arabic poetry, I wholeheartedly recommend Fadwa Tuqan’s works.
