I'm usually a from-scratch girl, but some of the cakes in this book look so tasty that I couldn't resist. I did write down the recipes for homemade yellow and chocolate cake mixes, and I looked up how to make an instant pudding mix. :)
We are mostly a from scratch family so I've never made a dump cake before, although my husband had as a kid. So this book was kind of an eye-opener—all the cake mixes and butter! I was really surprised by how much sugar (or pure candy) is in many of these recipes. I was appreciative that a DIY cake mix recipe was offered and I discovered that there are DIY instant pudding mixes online, too. Nice photography but I noticed that the cakes don't rise very high. I didn't flag any recipes to immediately try, though. I'm glad I checked this book out of the library, it was rather interesting.
While there's a lot of recipes, some of them start to feel repetitive or rely on a lot of pre-made or packaged ingredients you may not have on hand. While the concept of easy cakes is appealing, there's nothing in this recipe book that jumped out at me as a cake I need to try. I think there are some interesting ideas in here that can help you in a pinch, but still require some planning.
For all of us who love to eat desserts but hate to spend time measuring, stirring and baking, these cakes are a real treat! Easy instructions made with basic ingredients, I'm ready to get started! These cakes seem perfect for all occasions - from holidays to brunch - and will likely transport well to your local potluck.
I've made one of the recipes twice now (Bluberry Cake for 2) Yum! I liked the book b/c some of the recipes were for smaller cakes , not just large ones to bring to a potluck, etc. My first experience with a Dump Cake was from J.T. Schuster at a church function. I had never heard of it and didn't know what to expect, but it was delicious. I always think fondly of Joan when I bake a Dump Cake!!
I love this book! I can't wait to try at least 12 of the cakes this summer alone. I look forward to trying the slow cooker recipes also. You can use fresh fruit, canned fruit or frozen fruit in many of the recipes, which means cake all year long!
I haven't tried any of the recipes just yet, but there are a few I'm looking forward to making. Beautiful photos and simple directions. A few of the recipes reminded me of the cakes my grandma use to make 😊
Some of these are a bit more involved. Overall super quick and easy. I font have great luck with the true dump cakes but the extra steps do help. I appreciated the homemade cake mix recipes.
I had the same problem of the author using mixes as the ingredients of their recipes, mixes that the author never explains how to do them instead of buying them. So, kind of useless for me.
A friend of mine mentioned that she had just read this recently, but didn't know if she'd be making any of these... mostly because the book recommends that each dump cake be served the day it's made. (I did notice, however, that it IS possible to store leftovers in the fridge and many can be warmed up, if you prefer your cake warm.) I told her I wanted to see if after her, though, because she said it included recipes for basic cake mixes (yellow, white and chocolate) that a person could make on their own at home, rather than continually buying box mixes from the store. I thought that sounded simple and, in the long run, cheaper. So I checked out the book from the library, and after reading it, I've decided that I need to buy my own copy of it. These recipes look amazing! They're so simple, they require few ingredients, and the sound absolutely delicious! Plus, there are pictures for almost every single recipe, so you know what your dessert should look like. (I appreciate pictures in cookbooks.) This is going on my birthday wishlist!!!
Who knew "dump" cakes could be so pretty?! Gorgeous photos of what can be concocted with very pedestrian ingredients. Beautiful cover with a somewhat retro but current feel. Most of the recipes contain at least one stick of butter so I will pace myself on trying all of them, but found a few with no butter listed-first up to try is Lemon-Blueberry Dump Cake. I am also fascinated by the chemistry involved in the Triple Berry Cobbler with only three ingredients: two pounds of berries, cake mix, & a can of soda. Bonus!: I loved the basics section that reveals how to make your own cake mix. When I'm looking for a quick recipe for a crowd, I'll reach for this book instead of a boxed brownie mix. Thank you to Goodreads & St. Martin's Press for the free book I received. 3.5 stars pre-recipe testing.
Short book filled completely with dump cake recipes. They all sound delicious and as easy as the name implies. The "Dump cake basics" is very well written answering all the questions that might arise when baking a dump cake. my only complaint would be that there aren't enough pictures. I would have like a picture of each completed cake. I know they are pretty basic, but I believe it would have been a welcome addition.
I won Delicious Cump Cakes from Goodreads.com. I have looked thru the cookbook and am super excited to make some of the cakes. I love easy and fast! I can't wait to make the Missippi Mud Dump Cake or the the Black Forest Dump Cake! Yummy!
Recipes look easy and yummy. I will be trying several recipes soon. The applesauce gingerbread dump cake and the lemon blueberry dump cake are first up!
Yummy! This is a great cake book. It would be worth owning. I just wish there was a picture for every recipe. I liked that the author included a homemade cake mix recipe.
