Mijn oudjes naast deze prachtige nieuwe. Eind basisschool was ik helemaal druk met het zoeken van bloemen en het aanleggen van een herbarium, ik vond het geweldig! Van mijn Grandma kreeg ik een beginnersgids en zelf kocht ik in de dorpsboekhandel na lang wikken en wegen van mijn karige zakgeld De Elseviers Nieuwe plantengids. Hij gaat al mee sinds 1980 en ik ben eraan gehecht, maar vond ondertussen dat ik toch echt wel toe was aan een nieuwe, en dan dit keer een echte Veldgids. Maar toen ik de officiële Nederlandse veldgidsen in de winkel bekeek liep ik er gewoon niet warm voor. Technisch zitten ze goed in elkaar, je kan er prima mee determineren via een stappenplan, je komt dan uit bij een technische zwart/wittekening van de bloem die je zoekt (met wel heel weinig extra informatie), mijn hart gaat daar niet sneller van kloppen! Bovendien heb ik niet bij elke bloem een compleet stappenplan nodig en wil ik ook gewoon de kleuren zíen en zo sneller kunnen opzoeken wat ik die dag gevonden heb!
Gaan zoeken en precies gevonden wat ik zocht en het zit echt geweldig in elkaar dit boek! Heel mooi gedetailleerde botanische illustraties, up-to-date informatie en ook zo'n zelfde zoeksysteem, maar helderder, voor als het nodig is. De indeling is praktisch, er wordt gewerkt met kleuren, zodat je direct naar de goede stukken kunt bladeren. En het bestrijkt, ondanks de titel, heel Noordwest-Europa. Het Latijn is niet voor niets ooit ingezet en zo is ook de Nederlandse soortnaam en informatie makkelijk te vinden op internet (ik ben fan van de filmpjes van Flora van Nederland).
Naast de algemene teksten heb ik stuk voor stuk de 120 bloeiende plantenfamilies in het boek bekeken op hun hoofdkenmerken. Heel helpend. Ondertussen ook een index daarvan voor mijzelf gemaakt met de Nederlandse familienamen erbij en als het een grote familie betreft ook een paar kenmerkende ondersoorten.
Het lijkt me geweldig als ik ook nog eens een hoofd zou hebben dat wat ik eenmaal heb gelezen ook nog eens allemaal zou onthouden... maar dat is helaas, nooit mijn sterke kant geweest.

New to the second edition:
Some of the taxonomy (order) has changed significantly since the first edition was published, and these changes have all been incorporated into the second edition. There are no new illustrations as such, but substantial text corrections and updates in addition to the taxonomic changes. The keys have all been improved on and updated (and in some cases rewritten entirely), making the book inherently more accessible.
The author explains in his introduction to the second edition:
"Recent research in molecular systematics using techniques of DNA sequencing has resulted in a revision of the family relationships between some species of plants. Much of this is a consequence of an international collaborative research project, the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group or APG. The APG system has now been incorporated into the most recent edition of Stace’s standard British flora and has been followed in this new edition of the Guide. In some cases, such as the splitting up of the Scrophulariaceae and the Liliaceae into a number of separate families, this has resulted in some unfamiliar changes although in many cases they had already been predicted by traditional taxonomy."
Thus some plant (Latin) names have also changed, and the new edition reflects these changes.

Excellent key to the wildflowers of Ireland, any flower i key'd out from this book was accurate and the book contains information on a vast range of species. The book even includes some identification of common ferns, horsetails and other seedless plants also which proved accurate also. Although it is a great book there is other more in depth keys which are more accurate and contain more species variations than this book has. A great book though!

So far, impressed. Only identified Purple Moor grass using the keys. I like that it has keys for ferns, club mosses, flowering plants and grasses.
The descriptions use the usual botanical terminology, so it helps if one familiarises oneself with such terms. An excellent glossary, and light for the field, is the glossary published by Kew Gardens. More soon.
