I've heard about the Geronimo Stilton books for ages and I finally read one and found it to be great fun. Different words are written in fun, creative fonts of many colors that breathe new life into these children's stories.
I was surprised by the amount of humor in the novels that would be well above the understanding of a third grader, including references to flies in the fondue, among others. I also enjoyed how the author used asides to explain possibly new concepts and characters to the series. This was done in a manner that did not undermine the audience for not knowing the concepts.
However, the creative format of the book just makes for enjoyable reading. Along with the quirky fonts are colorful and well thought out pictures. They broke up the text and allowed for visual messages to be shared.
This particular volume was about the Olympics and there were many pages at the end of the book describing facts about historical and current games. There were also pages with the flags of participating countries, which were fun to view.
This would be a great series for anyone interested in hooking a reluctant reader. They are colorful, fun, fast paced and entertaining.
