*Sigh* I'm not sure where all of these 4 and 5 star ratings are coming from. I bought this book because it was $0.99, the cover looked fantastic and I've honestly never read a book about witches that I didn't enjoy. I guess there's a first for everything.

I don't know where to begin. The dialogue felt forced and awkward. This was especially true of the villain. (I had bought the audio version as well and the narration of the villain was laughable.) None of the characters seemed to have their own voice. All of the characters lacked depth, and honestly I didn't care what happened to them.

I don't want to be a complete Debbie Downer, so I will say this: The cover is beautiful, the general idea had potential (though it ultimately fell flat) and at least it wasn't very long.

I got to 20%, but the dialogue was stiff and awkward and I had a feeling it wasn't going to get much better so decided not to waste my time.

I'm so gutted that this book wasn't better. I adored the cover, and the story concept isn't half bad. However, sadly this didnt deliver.

The plot of the story is that in the late 17th century 3 sibling witches escape the Salem trials through the eldest of the three, Karina/Trin, casting a spell that hurtles them through time - but not together. Every century they endeavour to find each other, however up until present time, only 2 of the 3 sisters have been able to reunite. In the 21st century, the three sisters find each other, but learn they were not the only 3 to make it through Karina's spell.

All characters in this book lacked depth, personality, and development. Every sentence felt so forced, and the dialogue was not so much a conversation than an unnecessary statement. The 'romance' was so cringe worthy and yukky, I wanted to throw this book against a wall at times.

The only part I did think was good, was that some chapters went back to during the time of the witch trials, which made the story just a little better and more constructed. But on the whole, it was a super cheesy, cringey and poorly written novel. Oh, and from an editing perspective, loads of grammar mistakes.

I received a copy of The Witches of BlackBrook to review and really chose it because of its awesome cover I want that dress so bad! I am glad that I choose to review it, I ended up liking it a lot more than I thought I would.

Likes:

I loved the whole span of time in the books. The sisters were crushed to be separated and have to find each other through series of lives. They grew up in Salem during the heat of the witch trials. Even though they tried to help people, they still are seen as harmful.

Magic is always fun in books. It is fun to imagine what it would be like if you had powers.

I really liked the location on the book, that upper northeast corner of the country is somewhere I have not been able to visit much and I would love to travel there more.

I loved the family relationships in the book. No matter what the era, the sisters desperately search for each other. I love that. Good, strong family values in books always make me smile.

There was a little bit of romance in the book, and it was good. It wasn’t too much but it was timeless. I thought it fell well within the rest of the story.

I am excited to see where the rest of the series goes! I enjoyed the writing, it was a fast, easy read.

Gripes:

Nothing major.

Since I can remember I’ve been obsessed with witches, every time someone asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up my answer was A WITCH!, by the time I was 12 I had read everything I could about witches books, witches in real life and finally had my first contact with the Wicca religion and I was in love.

Growing up a catholic, going to a catholic school for girls it was hard to wrap my head around a lot of this stuff but I was hooked and the more I read about it the more I wanted to be a witch, the more I felt like one and then I just… grew up, realized I couldn’t be a professional witch, still loved it even though I became a graphic communication designer and continued reading about it. Celebrating pagan holidays and just trying to balance my life.

The reason I went into all this, to tell you I was very excited about this book, the excerpt and cover of the book made me so happy and hopeful, it was Salem, witches, sisterhood, magic, love, romance and it was everything I love about witchcraft and Wicca in general, but then… I read the book.

It’s a fairly short story that I have to push myself to read for over 3 weeks, when I normally would have read it in 2 days at a slow pace so it’s not a good start.

I’m not going to delve into the plot, I’m just going to say I found it very predictable and one dimensional.

The characters all have the same voices, the dialogues are very flat, too formal and you can’t even pinpoint the character’s personalities in them, in addition to all this it’s hard to relate to the emotions and feelings I think the author tried to convey because I don’t think even the characters know what they were feeling or the appropriate response to some stimuli. eg: If you’ve spent centuries looking for your family and you finally find them, in addition you find your soulmate which you weren’t expecting I’d think you’d feel joy, maybe feel scared but excited, nervous, curious, but something! here the main character just goes with it as if it wasn’t even an issue.

When the characters are fighting or in a “heated” conversation and even when some offensive things are being said everyone keeps being all happy and not worried. I doubt this characters are even human.

I think the intention of the book was good but the depth of the story and characters wasn’t fully explored.

Maybe I feel this way because of the passion and interest I feel for the subject and my expectations were too high, I want to give kudos on the spells the author went with, very cute and actually have a nice rhythm.

Stars: 2 because I believe in the good intention and it’s a story with a lot of potential, by the end of my reading I thought I just read a manuscript that needed work and evolving so maybe the next ones are going to be a lot better written, investigated and by then maybe the author will know her characters enough to give them separate voices to each of them.

Thank you Xpresso Book Tours for this book! Unfortunately, I DNF'd this book (I put it on the DNF shelf, if you didn't see.)

When I first saw the blurb for this book, I was really excited. I was really excited because the book includes/mentions the Salem witch trials. I LOVE the Salem trials. It was probably the most interesting topic in the Social Studies curriculum. It [witch trials] had so much drama, hype, tension, and false accusations!

Sure, this book has a lot of drama. But, was it the drama I was expecting? No. The drama seemed very Real Housewives-esque.

The main character lives in the modern world and that's where most of the story revolves around. But, there are flashbacks (Of sorts) that take place in the past. These flashbacks were boring to read because nothing much happened. The present was also pretty boring.

I didn't sit down and drink this book in. I took very long breaks from it.

I thought this book was going to be The Craft with the three sisters , who worship the Goddess aka Mannon. I got excited, but that died down from the dialogue and the writing.

The writing was not my cup of tea. It was a little too wordy and long for my taste. Plus, the dialogue was unexpected. You want to know why? Okay, grown ups talk to each other in a one dimensional way that resembles a teen speaking with his/her crush. Everyone was too happy/go-lucky in my opinion. The kids in the "flashbacks", spoke with more maturity than the adults.

$0.99 on Amazon Kindle so I decided not to pass it by. The plot lacked depth in my opinion. I made the mistake of getting the Audible version as well and the narrator was on my last nerve.....periods are there for a reason Ms. Narrator. I felt the characters were also uninteresting. The book had potential, but fell flat.

3.5 stars. The story was pretty good, but not one that I think will stay with me. Thankfully, instead of relying on a cliffhanger, the story reaches a conclusion while still leaving an opening for further story development.

Note: I received a free digital copy of this book thanks to Xpresso Book Tours in exchange for an honest review.

I found this book to be quite unique and very enjoyable, filled with suspense, Wiccan magic, and much more.

Quick Summary

Trin and her sister Kit has been looking for their youngest sister ever since they’ve been thrown forward into time by a spell cast by Trin. But something is blocking Trin from finding her, and everyone’s souls are in danger if she doesn’t find out how to defeat it. Will she be able to reunite with all her sisters, and overcome the darkness once and for all?

Plot

Maybe it’s just my lack of exposure to books with a similar plot line to this, but I found the plot to be quite different to other books I’ve read. What I loved most about the plot other than the obvious (Wiccan magic is so cool!) was the element of mystery and the theme of girl power. I found the story to be quite suspenseful, some parts were predictable, but there were lots of twists and turns to keep the story engaging.
One thing that really stood out to me was the lesser role of the main male character. You know how in most books, YA or NA, the male character often has a big role, and is focused on a lot? Well, in this book, the story was primarily led by Trin and other female characters. This is quite unique, I don’t find many books these days with this kind of thing, usually the male greatly impacts the plot in one way or another, right? While the main male character in the book did affect the story, he wasn’t some big hero that stole the attention from the females or anything. It was different, and I liked that. All in all, the plot was great; it was different, mysterious, and unique.

Characters

Trin was a great protagonist, I would say, however I do think she could’ve had a bit more personality. I don’t know, she didn’t seem as real to me as she could’ve been. That being said, she wasn’t annoying or anything, and I liked her, she was strong, willful and caring, and there wasn’t anything that I really disliked about her.

As for the other characters, I really liked them as well, especially the villain. I feel like the villain was really well done, I wish I could elaborate, but I don’t want to give away any spoilers. ;) The supporting characters, like the male love interest, Jason, and his sister Caris, were also enjoyable, but I wish they were developed a bit more. There’s not much I can say about them, which is a clear indication to me that they need more development. However, their presence wasn’t bothersome or anything, and I didn’t dislike them.

Writing Style

I think the writing style was one of the things I liked most about this book apart from the plot. Tish Thawer incorporated scenes of both past and present quite smoothly and it added more background information about our main characters in a more unique and engaging fashion. I never got confused between past and present (partly due to the fact the characters’ name changes) and I loved learning more about the characters’ past. The book is written in third person POV, mostly from the perspective of our main character, Trin, but occasionally from supporting characters Caris and Jason. I think this suited the story, and was used to effectively create different scenes throughout the story

Overall…

This story was really good, full of captivating twists and turns. What really made me boost it up to 4 stars would be because it was so addicting! I always wanted to pick this up, and continue reading it. This book boasts of a story about love, hope, and most of all, strength in family and siblings. The characters were great to read about, and Tish Thawer was able to weave scenes from the past into the present flawlessly, enhancing the reader’s experience and understanding of the book. One thing I will mention though is that the romance kind of takes a back seat in this book, or isn’t much focused on. But this new-adult paranormal romance is one you do not want to miss if you’re into magic and witches, with a unique and enchanting story.

The Witches of BlackBrook by Tish Thawer is the first instalment in the Witches of BlackBrook series; however, it is does not have an open-ending.
Quick-paced and easy to navigate, the story is about three witches: Karina, Kara and Kenna, who lived in the late 1600's, when magic was practiced freely. Mischief befalls the three, when a woman tricks the elder sister, claiming her baby is ill. After that, Karina is accused of killing the baby and being the devil's daughter. She is sentenced to burn at the stake, where she performs a spell to protect her and her sisters.

Karina's spell takes the sisters, and the rest of the witches, across time, to be reborn in different bodies every time.

The Witches of BlackBrook opens with a short but powerful prologue. We see a witch's sacrifice from the first page, which immediately gives an idea about the character, even though we are not sure who that character is from the beginning but later learn that it is Karina.

The novel shifts between the present, where Karina is Trin, and their episodes and events from their past life before and during Karina's trial. Trin is a massage therapist and lives with her roommate/sister Kit, believed to be Kenna. Throughout their previous lives, they have been in constant search of their third sister Kara, but to no avail.

The narration is in the third person throughout the novel, but we get the sense of things coming from certain perspectives. There are also short sections of an unknown character constantly trying to separate the three sisters and prevent their union. This character adds suspense and gives a strong eerie and creepy atmosphere.

In the present, Trin meets Caris, a teacher, who recently moved back to BlackBrook with her cousin. During her first massage session with Caris, Trin sees memories of her and her sisters and immediately believes that Caris might be the third lost sister. However, Kit believes otherwise and we get a strong sense of jealousy.

I enjoyed the use of spells, and the seamless shift between present and past.
Trin may be the eldest sister, but she's not the wisest. And I really liked that. "Trin was always thrown off when another witch was around. She desperately wanted everyone they'd stumbled upon to be Kara, that she'd lost perspective over the years."

There is also the character of Jason, Caris' cousin, who is instantly attracted to Trin and reminds her of her long lost love, Jeramiah.
The overall setting and descriptions throughout the novel are vivid, but there were several images and lines that stood out for me:
"She should be excited and proud of Kit, and she was, but the urgency of finding out what magical barrier was being cast upon her entire destiny seemed like a trump card in her book."

There was also the use of tarot readings. "Trin acknowledged the Magician card as her past, no surprises there. But the present and future card had her undivided attention.
The Seven of Swords indicated deceit and deception surrounding her present, while the reversed Tower forewarned her of major changes, where she could no longer count on those close to her."
Although in several instances the novel reminded me of the book and television series Charmed, Tish Thawer put in several twists, giving The Witches of BlackBrook its own character.

Overall: A quick-paced magical five-star must read.

My Review!
Any time there is a story about witches, I NEED to read it! Add a pretty cover on top of that, and I’m basically sold. While I did enjoy this book, there was something about it that was just...lacking. It was told in 3rd person and switched a few POVs throughout so it was a little hard to connect to the characters, but I liked them! I just didn’t feel as if I knew them enough to come to care for them.

The main character is Trin, massage therapist and witch. I don’t really know much about her aside from that. She’s polite to the point I rolled my eyes. She’s the most powerful witch ever, apparently, and yet I didn’t actually see her doing much of that craft throughout the book. She’s been searching for her long-lost sister, and she thinks she’s finally found her. But nothing is as it seems for Trin, and she’ll have to deal with a lot of confusion in this book. I liked her character a lot, though again, with the 3rd person POV and the short book, I didn’t really feel like I got to know her enough.

There were quite a few other characters who didn’t feel well-rounded at all, even the “villain” and his little portions of POV during the course of the book. The romance left much to be desired, and I didn’t quite believe it even with a certain reveal. They didn’t make me FEEL like they loved each other. I liked the other characters well enough, but they were kind of bland. And everyone was just so POLITE to each other, and I was like: this isn’t real life. There wasn’t any emotional depth. Again, much of that could just be because it was in 3rd person, which always makes it harder to step into a character’s shoes, so to speak. But I could have used so much more development with them.

The plot was actually kind of the saving grace, as I was intrigued the whole way through! I even totally missed the Big Twist (which makes me feel like an idiot after rereading the synopsis). I didn’t guess that so it took me by surprise. I did really like the flashbacks, though I think less is more sometimes in that regard. They did give me great background on the characters and the past, but quite a few seemed either irrelevant or randomly thrown out there for a break in dialogue/story-line. That ending also felt completely wrapped up (even if it a bit open-ended), and I didn’t actually know it was a series. So I’m kinda interested to see where the sequel takes us.

The Witches of BlackBrook, while not the greatest book I’ve ever read, was really entertaining and intriguing. It grabbed my attention in the beginning, and that never wavered. It was a quick read, so it left the characters feeling underdeveloped, but I’m sure the sequel will change things in that regard and we’ll see more of certain ones. :)

Welp, that was underwhelming and more than a bit frustrating. I've had this title sitting on my bookshelf since 2017, when I purchased it at an author event. It ended up in my giant TBR pile and neglected until a few days ago when I decided I was looking for something witchy for the fall.

For starters: gorgeous cover, solid plot premise, nice author when I met her.

For reals: incredibly poorly executed book. It was rife with typographical errors, misused words (e.g., "shown" for "shone"), descriptions that made no sense, and incredibly wooden dialogue. The book read quickly and easily, but that was because there was no depth whatsoever to the characters, their relationships, or the story. There was *so* much telling instead of showing, and little of it furthered the plot or character development. Tragic and startling events happened but had no emotional impact because they were so quickly passed over, and huge issues that had loomed for literal centuries were quickly resolved. The entire effort felt very surface-level, and that's really disappointing because the premise of the plot was intriguing and could have yielded a great story.

I see there are additional books in the series, but I won't be reading them.

This is an enjoyable and entertaining tale told in the present time but with flashbacks to Salem. It is smoothly linked and always done with a reason, not simply gratuitous. With lots of intrigue and suspense to keep you turning the pages, this is a story that is an easy read with plenty of references made to Wicca and the correspondences to various flowers and crystals etc.

I enjoyed this story and didn't find any editing or grammatical errors. I enjoyed the climax of the story although it didn't really come as a surprise. However, I wasn't reading it for the shock value so this in no way detracted from the story for me. It did remind me of 'Charmed' in more ways than one so I would have no hesitation in recommending this to any fans of Charmed or their version of Wicca.

I gotta say I thought this book had a good idea behind it. However the first sentence immediately turned me off. It opens with a girl being burned at the stake during the Salem witch trials. NO-ONE was burned at the stake in Salem. I really dislike when research isn’t done into actual historic events such as the Salem witch trials. If you are going to reference a true moment in history it should be accurate.
The moment wouldn’t have lost anything by being a hanging (which is accurate) rather than a burning (not accurate.) I have not finished the story yet but so far the whole thing seemed rushed and not thought out. I’m hoping it gets better as I keep reading.

This is one of those books where you keep thinking one more chapter and then I'll stop for the night and the next thing you know the book is over and you're both happy and sad. I started this book about 2am and finished it at 4:22am. I though that since it was after 3 and it was officially now March 7, I could buy book 2 and continue this wonderful series, but alas I must wait a few more hours. (Guess I'll try to get some sleep).

I LOVED this story; the quick trips back to the late 17th century before continuing todays timeline; the story of sisters and lovers lost through time, always searching but always being kept apart. I have to admit, I wasn't surprised as to the reason that they had remained apart for centuries, it was the only way ot made since and even the hook gives a reference to that reason.

Trina is an amazing character and now that she and her sisters have reunited, with the approval of the Goddess, I can only imagine the amazing things that can happen as the series continues. As to be expected since Trina was the main focus of this book and the main character in the backstory there is much we don't know about the other two that I expect to learn as the series unfolds.

I also very happy that there wasn't a three-way love triangle or insta-love; they have loved each other for centuries and finally they have been reunited. It will be interesting to see the other two find their true loves, especially since Ms. Thawer writes the romance with such a light hand. This is so different and such a welcome change from the almost porn that is thrown at readers in place of love and romance. Please don't ruin my opinion by writing the next one using the ubiquitous “I hate you, but everyone knows that means I love you and knows we’ll end up together,” that is even more nauseating than insta-love.

When, in 1693, Karina was tried as a witch, she created a spell that launched her soul and the souls of her 2 sisters forward in time, but unbeknownst to her, a powerful demon got caught in the spell and was brought with them. This demon knows that if the sisters find each other again, they will become too powerful, so every generation it works against them to keep them apart. This generation though, Karina is known as Trin, and along with the sister she always finds, they search for the lost one. This time, someone shows up whom Trin feels like is her sister, but can she trust her? And how can she know for sure?

This sounded so promising and like something I would adore, but unfortunately, I only kind of liked it. The characters were well written but I found that they didn't grow during the story. I found them all to be fairly flat and one dimensional. Even Trin wasn't as I pictured her. She was supposed to be a really powerful witch but I felt like she didn't do anything throughout the story.

Now I did enjoy the flashbacks showing us what led up to the big spell, I enjoyed the fact that the witches souls keep going and that they "know" themselves each time, I even enjoyed the demon and his POVs. I just felt like something was missing. I think I wanted a little more action and magic, to be honest. Plus the "romance" was so eye rollingly typical that I really didn't buy it.

Anyway, even with the things I didn't like, this was still an OK read. It kept my attention throughout and was an easy listen.

Michelle Marie was easy to listen to and was clear and concise, but I found she kept the same tones for all the girls and it was quite confusing trying to figure out who was talking. I think she needs to add a little variety, especially with so many girls in the book!

4 stars - based on the story not on the narration

Quick, entertaining and interesting magical paranormal story.

The story is told between the past and present. Really liked the "past" parts of the story.

While the story was entertaining and enjoyable it was pretty east to figure out who the deceiver in the trio was. Although there are a few twists in the story you don't see coming.

While Michelle Marie has a pleasant voice she needs to slow down, it sounds like she is rushing through the narration.(female voices) When she was narrating the part of Jason her narration was great. Not to fast. There was not much change in each of the female character voices. She did a pretty good voice for the "evil" entity.
Saying end of chapter is annoying, a slight pause and then saying new chapter number is enough.

I was intrigued by a quote I saw attributed to this book -- "We are the granddaughters of the witches you weren't able to burn" -- and so decided to read it. I was a bit surprised to find that the quote was just the epigraph, but hoped it boded well for whether the story would likewise intrigue me.

Unfortunately, I didn't get into the writing, the characters, or the romance. In fact, I didn't really enjoy any of the relationships in the book, possibly because of the way the dialogue grated on me.

There is the kernel of an interesting story here, but because of my lack of investment in the characters I didn't get into it. The writing irritated me enough that I just couldn't finish. I did skip to the last few chapters after the 50% mark so I could find out how it ended, so I guess I was invested enough for that.

ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT

This book has been brilliantly researched (unless the author is an actual Wiccan witch herself). As an eclectic witch myself, i an delighted to finally see Witchcraft and Wicca perfectly depicted in this book. Or as perfect as it gets taking into account that there are supernatural and fantastical elements to it.
I have never been more pleased with a fictional book about Paganism and Witchcraft and the love for family through the ages. Thank you for respectfully covering the subject Ms Thawer. I. Cant wait for Daughters of Maine now!

This was my second book by Thawer and am falling more in love with this author! I'd never read a novel about witches, much less a fantastic time hop one. time hops can get REALLY confusing but Thawer did an excellent job of making everything clear. what I loved most about this novel were the twists. I totes didnt see some of them coming and it totally made the book. I definitely recommend this book to fantasy lovers!

now i am hooked. This was such a great, easy and creative book. i was hooked after the first page.

The characters were easy to fall in love with and follow, along with the story. the author made the mental visions so easy and vivid of the surroundings and the characters actions felt so real.

i would highly recommend this author and this book.

A very cute Wicca fantasy-romance thay kept me entertained during this evening's flight delays. With some interesting historical plays and classic magic, even though some of the choices and characters were obscure or a little confusing I still really enjoyed this book.

An absolutely fantastic book

I bought this book on a whim and it is one of the best decisions I've made when it comes to getting a book.
Because quite simply this book is absolutely fantastic.
It drew me in from the first word and didn't let me go until the last. The characters are strong and likeable. And I'm my opinion Tish Thawer is either a Wiccan herself or she did an enormous amount of research to get her facts right.
I can't wait to read the the next book in the series to see what happens next to the sisters.
Highly recommended indeed.

The story is cute, the world itself is interesting and generally, it’s kept my attention and mad for a fun read. The writing isn’t glamorous, rather simple but it’s not bad. I will continue with the series.

I really wanted to like this one but it just didn't do it for me. They was just something about it that prevented me from fully getting me to connect with the characters. But I did finish it and am glad to have done so.

Aside from the handful of editing issues, I really enjoyed this Witch story!
The writing was a little awkward at times but I loved the characters and the originality of the story. I plan on continuing with the series.
