Found this book fascinating. The author pulls you into the head-space of a bootblack. You feel the compulsion, the urge, the need to serve the leather. While I have never had this particular taste, this is so well written, I could understand and feel it. My only complaint was that once into the space the stories that followed were only too short. Perhaps that was on purpose to urge the reader to go out and live the compulsion.
I highly recommend this book not only for its subject of bootblacking and culture, but also for a lesson in writing about compulsions in general.

anyone wanting to learn the art of bootblacking has to have this on their shelf. quick and short and to the point. a must reference with lots of info. for the beginner or first-timer. great little short story to wrap it all up at the end.
