Do you guys remember me telling you about a new Dystopia series a couple of months ago? If you don’t recall which book I am talking about, I can hint you by defining this series as X-Men meets YA dystopia. Ring a bell? Yes! it was The Caelian Cycle series and its second installment will be released next month (October 19th). Guess what? I was lucky enough to get an ARC! Yay!
What a sweet surprise was to learn that Sadie story was getting a second book! I totally enjoyed reading the first one, and honestly? it kind of ends in a cliffhanger, so I was super excited to know how the events were going to develop. Or in other words, what the eff was going to happen!
Let’s recap a little bit and draw some context: the world is divided by Caelians, with DNA mutations that give them new Talents, and Norms, whose DNA is not altered. Of course, both sides have extremist groups that plot against each other. So, there is a political (and violent) fight over power in order to take down the opposite group.
Our main character, Sadie, not only founds herself in the middle of this whole fight, but she also is part of the main problem, her new and undiscovered Talent turning her into the perfect weapon for the group she belongs to. Finding yourself in that situation would be a big enough headache, right? Well, that’s not the main issue occupying Sadie’s mind…
Kian – ah lovely and protective Kian – who enters stomps on Sadie’s life during the first book, is here to stay. He refuses to leave Sadie’s side so he can protect her at all costs. Isn’t that sweet? I have to say I am crushing on Kian since minute 1, but in my defense he is kinda perfect.
The book starts off quite light, focusing on Sadie and Kian relationship, which a hopeless romantic like moi enjoyed deeply. Then, a series of events happen, and holy moly, guys. The story completely morphs into a succession of “what the…! No!”. Through Sadie, the reader experiences loss, grieve and also gets to endure really crappy situations that will freak you out. Honestly? Judging on some of the, let’s say hursh, events on the first book I knew Donnielle had no intention of turning her series into a dull party. Well, Bound totally confirms that.
Over all, I think Bound is the whole dystopia package: paranormal talents, action, romance, loss and character development. The perfect sequel to a first good book that left me wanting more. Again. Now, I can only wait to see what the hell is going to happen next and see if I can develop a new cool Caelian Talent. Wouldn’t it be great?
Alliances are born of necessity when force is required. Sadie is determined to have her revenge on the monster that has made her life a tortured hell. Refusing to give in to the enemy, she begins honing her talent, her mind and her body into formidable fighting machines. Her life at St. Vincent’s is a thing of the past, her friends left behind, but a new person has come into her life, helping her to learn of her past, secrets kept from her. When evil advances, friends and allies stand together, and may well fall together as Sadie’s life is tossed about like a ship on the raging sea of chaos.
Donnielle Tyner’s Bound takes us deeper in to the Caelian world where power has corrupted souls and fear has paralyzed the masses. One man wants it all, including Sadie, not out of love, but as a weapon in his arsenal. How do you tell your grandfather, “not happening” without losing a piece of your soul? Ms Tyner’s words create scenes that are living and breathing, characters that stand as heroes and friends. Watch Sadie grow in so many ways with less angst and more determination, she is coming into her own, as a brave warrior for good.
Sometimes building on a first book can be a daunting task for an author, not so with Donnielle Tyner, she has once again brought action to each page, as well as emotional turmoil! Geared to young adult readers, the recipe for success is here and not to be missed! If the blistering pace doesn’t grab you, Ms. Tyner’s style will!

Oh my goodness! I absolutely loved this book I can't believe you left me hanging like that Donnielle! I need the next book NOW!
I really love the character development and story line in these books. And that is saying a lot from me because usually I don't read a lot of this genre. These books however grab me right from the beginning and I never feel overwhelmed. I can't wait for more I just have to know how this all plays out!
I would like to thank Ms. Tyner for granting The Cover Contessa a copy of this e-ARC to read in exchange for an honest review. Though I received this e-book for free that in no way impacts my review.
Goodreads Teaser: Bound by Vengeance.
Sadie has found the resolve to fight the man who caused so much pain in her life. Her tentative alliance with the HCA underground gives her the resources to train both her body and Talent for when she comes face to face with her grandfather.

With help from a new friend, Sadie uncovers more about her past and that someone close to her has been keeping secrets from Sadie her entire life.
Bound by Fear.
Tragedy strikes close to home, giving a longstanding enemy, one desperate and willing to do anything to have Sadie on their side, an opportunity to arise. Allies and friends come together to stand against evil, but at a terrible cost. Sadie’s history and future collide while the world is thrown into chaos.
Sadie must overcome or forever be Bound.
As with the first book in this series the characters are unique, with each one filling a required role but being an independent being at the same time. They have a purpose outside of their role in Sadie's story, something rarely found in most novels these days. The main characters retain their individuality throughout this book as well, with each staying true to who they were initially introduced as, yet also having room and flexibility to grow and develop more depth.
Sadie's personal journey, both the internal and external aspects, remains fascinating. At times it moves slowly and languidly, but more often than not things around Sadie happen quite quickly, keeping the action intense and riveting. Even when delving into the emotional and romantic segments of her life things move pretty much at two speeds - full ahead or completely stopped. At least it feels that way to Sadie, which comes across loud and clear for the reader.
In this stage of her story Sadie's circle of friends has both expanded and contracted. While the additions are interesting it's the subtractions that really keep you turning the pages and leaving the light on long past when reality would dictate otherwise. For it’s the supporting characters that really help move this story along. That's not to say that Sadie has lost her appeal, if anything it's grown even larger. And that appeal is attracting both savory and unsavory elements to her - those that care about her, flaws and all, versus those that want to turn her into a weapon; a weapon that they control and therefore don't necessarily even view as a person but only a commodity or means to an end.
It is those very stark contrasts that make this such an engaging book. I found myself emotionally invested in Sadie and her friends, and rooting for them all. Of course being human sometimes a mistake gets made, but it's how the characters handle the mistakes that build upon their humanity and keep them firmly grounded in the 'real' world. With the grueling pace that is maintained by this book I often found myself surprised by the amount of time that actually passed, especially considering just how much had taken place already.
Even with all that has happened in this book and the first one, there is clearly more to come. More that doesn't just allude to thrills, chills, and excitement - it promises. And based upon what has come before I am confident that the third book will more than deliver upon the implied promise of yet another wild ride for the reader as we experience Sadie's life right along with her as it unfolds, bearing down toward the inevitable ultimate showdown that will either set her free in a world of ultimate acceptance or forever shackle her to a world of misery. Finding out what happens on the way to the answer is to be is possibly more exciting than learning what that answer itself is to be; what keeps bring us back to each new book with more built-up excitement and enthusiasm. Ms. Tyner is clearly not just on the right track, she's busy making a whole new track altogether!!
After reading the first book in the series (and enjoying it), I was looking forward to see where Sadie would be heading next.
We find Sadie there where we left her, in safety while she heals from the last events of book one. Not only has she suffered physical scars, but it's really nice to see that she's left with emotional ones as well--deep ones. The new sense of hate and distrust to her personality made her a little less endearing, but it gave her a more realistic personality. She's a heroine who survived but not untouched. I appreciate how the author worked this in so well.
The plot itself is slower than in the first book, giving more time to dive into Sadie's thoughts and emotions. Often times, I'm not a big fan of paces switching this heavily, but in this case, it fits the story perfectly. Sadie is healing and developing. And no, it's not a boring process.
It's refreshing to watch her friendship ring grow and get a good grip on some of the other characters. More time is spent on getting to know some of their stories and personalities better, which definitely adds more depth than before. I enjoyed learning to know more about those around her, although some of the dialogue, exchanges and reactions didn't feel as natural as they could have.
Sadie's predicament, her history and the building interest in her abilities weaves into a more layered and dangerous story. The action itself doesn't start until the later part of the book, but that didn't hurt the tension. Everyone wants a Sadie...all sides...and each has it's own agenda. The intrigue and unknown truths behind the 'evil' characters involved thickens, creating a richer underplay for Sadie's predicament.
In general, this is an enjoyable read which kept me in the story the entire way through. There were a few small moments which felt a little forced, not clear or out of pace, but it wasn't enough to pull me completely out of Sadie's story.
Summed up, this is a nice continuation to book one, which not only allows the plot to thicken but adds a nice level of depth to help one learn to love the characters even more than before.
I received a free ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I said in my review of Lost that I needed to read book 2. Well, I have, and now I NEED to read book 3!!! This is a doozy of a book that just keeps on giving, with twists and turns that you won't see until it's too late, and things that won't make sense until the author decides it is time for you to know. Donnielle Tyner wraps up a fantastic story into a neat little bundle, presents it to you and then sits back whilst your emotions get ripped to pieces!
We stay with Sadie as she lives in the Underground, training in preparation to take down her grandfather, Miles Koenig. Kian doesn't agree with her decision, but he still supports her in her training. Sadie is one kickass main female and I love her to bits. Kian, well, he's just Kian! Dreamy, protective, stubborn, I could go on. The supporting cast is still as funny and heartwarming as before, although we don't see as much of them due to Sadie's living arrangements. When we do though, it's wonderful. She does make a new friend in Luca though, and their relationship is just as strong as the ones from the orphanage.
There is plenty of action in this book that will leave you gasping and, yes, even crying. I was on more than one occasion and I'm not ashamed to say it. THIS - this is how an author drags you into a story and makes you care about what's happening! There are two shocking events in this that tore me apart, but I will leave it to you to find out what they were.
With a cliffhanger ending that almost had me throwing my Kindle against the wall, this still manages to finish in the right place. Totally engrossed from page one, I can't wait to read book 3! Highly recommended!
* A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book, and the comments here are my honest opinion. *
Merissa Archaeolibrarian - I Dig Good Books! Nov 26, 2015
***Review has been gifted in exchange for my honest opinion and on behalf of Kats Book Promotions/ Katsindiebookblog.*** So yeah.. Book 1 I just absolutely fell in love with, questioning whether Book 2 would hold up to my expectations.. All I can say is WOW.. This book did that PLUS more! This series just keeps getting better and better. You are given plenty of answers that left you questioning in book 1, but still left with plenty of mystery for the next book. Sadie is now living in the Underground, away from her friends in the orphanage. She starts training so she can do whatever it takes to take down her grandfather. You are meeting new characters in play, especially Luca. Who Kian is not a huge fan in the beginning. But are they all willing to come together when it comes to the matter at hand, taking down Miles? He takes it upon himself to hit Sadie where it hurts. Will she fight for what is hers, or will she freeze up, even after all her new found training? Yet again, you are left with a major cliffhanger. If it can be done at a right spot, than this spot is perfect. I know some hate cliffhangers, but I’m a glutton for punishment so I can’t help but to love them. It gets me thinking on what can happen next, even though I’m usually wrong! Book 3 needs to hurry up! I’m in a desperate need for it!
I laughed, I cried, I spent several minutes on the edge of my seat too. What more can you want from a book? Sadie is one kickass heroine and the brooding Kian the perfect foil for her.
Fast paced, the characters, descriptions and tensions between the different factions suck you into the story. And just when you think you know where the plot is going, the author takes you down a different path.
This is the second book in the Caelian series and although I did read the first one, I don’t think you need to have done so to enjoy this book. But you’ll definitely need book three when it comes out to complete the cliff-hanger ending.
Gah!! What a cliffhanger! I can't wait to read the next book to find out what happens & what Kian's big secret is. I really enjoyed this follow up and am thoroughly enjoying the series so far. I love how Sadie is a tough female main character and how her friends are so supportive. I also love Kian and Sadie together -it's a great relationship & it's refreshing to have the author show them growing together & taking things slow which is awesome. I would highly recommend this book to everyone.
*I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.*
This series is fabulous. I love the mythos and the honest down to earth characters. I can relate to their emotions and lives even when wholly in the fantasy realm.
I give this book 5 out of 5 clouds and anxiously await book 3.
The second book in what I thought was a trilogy (I got the Kindle bundle- when this book ended there is apparently an extra novella that apparently comes before the 3rd book) was fast paced and furthers the relationship of Sadie and Kian as well as the political tensions between the Caelians and norms as well as the dueling factions within each group. I still like the X-Men-esque quality to this series' story and though it's a book I read over a long time in very short chunks, was easily able to slip in and out of this dystopian world that Tyner has created. Onto the next! 3 stars.
I received a copy from the author to read and review in return.
I was one of the lucky readers who received an ARC copy from Donnielle Tyner herself. I was super thrilled about the first installment and couldn't wait to start the second book of the series, "The Caelian Cycle". This book was so different to the first one. So many new factors about the Caelian world were introduced, a bucket load of character developments were portrayed, and the ambiance changed completely. This definitely made the concept of the entire story that much more interesting. Let's get into the nitty gritty.
Bound starts out at a different pace than what I was used to from the first book. We begin from where we left off, only a few weeks later where Sadie is forced to hide underground now that her dangerous talent and status as the granddaughter of the Moreau (one of the most important but narrow minded and dangerous Caelian families) is out in the open. Both humans and Caelians are hunting for her, holding different motives for their actions. Sadie is at a point in her life where she is filled with anger and hate for her grandfather and his sidekick, Link, but not only does she cast this frustration and anger towards him and his minion, but also to her friends and those who are closest to her. This new trait of Sadie's was something I really had to get used to, as she was previously known to be assertive, more composed and determined. But obviously, this change was a result from the final events in the first book (no spoilers here, go on... read the book!), and I couldn't help but sympathize for her. These final turn of events turned her into a tougher person, but simultaneously emotionally she was also becoming weaker.
Even though the pace of the book in the beginning was quite slow, the reader was consistently pulled into the story with the build up of potential suspenseful scenes, waiting for something to creep up and throw Sadie's world upside down. This didn't happen immediately however midway through, when the reader least expects it, I was blown away by the unexpected incident which took the story in a complete different direction. I love how Donnielle has such a talent for executing this, and she never fails to leave the reader in complete awe (and sometimes devastation!!).
Sadie's relationship with her boyfriend Kian and friends back in the orphanage intensified immensely. Her relationship with Kian moves so quickly that they decide to take it slower and focus genuinely on each other and what they want from their relationship. I found this to be a very realistic move for their relationship and it made me admire how much they loved each other through thick and thin. The relationship Sadie holds with her friends isso strong, whenever her friends were threatened or in danger, my heart would sink at the thought or notion that something would happen to them.
Ms. Tyner's writing style and and timing is impeccable, and she has an amazing talent to keep the reader consistently engaged into the story. Bound was no different and at every suspenseful moment I found myself clenching to my kindle for dear life. Now, that's what I call talent (pun definitely intended)!
I am absolutely thrilled that I have been featured in her praise section of Bound, and I cannot wait to read the next installment of this wonderful and adventurous YA dystopian series.
I really enjoyed Lost, the first book in the The Caelian Cycle series by Donnielle Tyner. So much so that I'm extra disappointed in the follow up, Bound. And I can sum up my disappointment in one word. Romance.
Don't get me wrong, I love a good bookish romance and some well written sexual tension between characters, even the odd love triangle/rectangle/occasional pentagon, as long as they don't overshadow everything else. Which is exactly what happens in this book. The stakes should be up from Lost. Sadie's dangerous Talent has been revealed to the world, and the human/Caelian groups are on the brink of all out war, with factions fighting amongst themselves to use Sadie for their own gain. But at a third of the way through the book, I was still getting none of that urgency, none of that drama. Only page after page of Sadie and Kian kissing, groping and making googly eyes at each other.
And then there's the love triangle.
It's needless, there's no suggestion at any point that Sadie will pick the siren Talented Luca over Kian, but it comes up over and over to inject unnecessary tension between the pair. Even a decidely non-urgent rescue operation of a fellow Caelian is an excuse to set up more sexual tension, arguments and make up kissing. Everything else is pushed to the side. Sadie gets captured for torture whilst on a date at some sort of make out point with Kian, and at one time she asks him if he wants to date exclusively when they've just been almost killed. Guys, you know there's almost a war going on right? Even an attack on Sadie's school and best friends is swamped in couplings and kissing. It robs the book of momentum and the story of impact, frustratingly confining it to a handful of characters when it should be expanding it.
There are bright spots that peer through the story. Sadie's capture and torture are fittingly brutal, and the attack on St Vincent's gutting in its consequences. These are the elements I was expecting in the sequel and if the story had focused on the bigger picture, I think I would have loved it. But I was disappointed that Sadie's grandfather, the big bad of the story resorted to what was essentially a custody court case to try and get hold of her. This is a world where people can conjure fire from the air, wield chains from their bodies like Doctor Octopus and drain life forces with a touch. Why am I reading a courtroom drama when I could be reading an all out, superpowered battle of epic proportions?!
I was disappointed with Bound, especially after enjoying Lost so much. It turns away from the large-scale epic struggle between good and evil that I so badly wanted it to be, retreating almost defiantly back into the underground of the HCA when it should be focusing on the bigger picture.
Bound by Vengeance. Sadie has found the resolve to fight the man who caused so much pain in her life. Her tentative alliance with the HCA underground gives her the resources to train both her body and Talent for when she comes face to face with her grandfather. Bound by Loss. Being separated from her friends at St Vincent’s is harder than she could have ever realized and it doesn’t help that Kian has withdrawn from her as well.
Summary: Sadie has never had an easy life form living in an Moreau orphanage for Carlian children where her absence of a talent made her different from the others with only her few friends to back her. That was until her talent broke though where it was seen and taped for all to see. Sadie found herself in the middle of a struggle between humans and Carlians, but also two different factions of Carlians. Sadie was lucky to be taken to the underground where she began her training in combat, but to also control her evolving talent. The fight has just begun with her grandfather, the leader of the Koenig family, who was willing to go to any limits to get his hands on Sadie. Sadie has already lost Michael, a past love, at his hands and vows to stop him form hurting her human and Calian friends in spite of the odds. Kian, her new love, promises to protect Sadie, but there is more to him than he was willing to believe. Stakes are high as the different factions make there move placing Sadie and all she holds dear in danger.
This book took off like a rocket starting right where the first book ended holding the reader riveted and it isn't over yet. This fast paced and intense story brought the characters to life as it unfolded. The intricate story kept me wondering which of the groups would strike next knowing that Sadie's grandfather was not to be underestimated in his desire for absolute control, especially of Sadie!
So this is Book 2 of this series and I loved the last book, its a story where a meteor has changed the dna of some humans so they are multi hued and have powers, a bit like the X-men, if I was trying to give an example of powers etc.
Sadie's powers were late to develop but when they did they caused a whole heck of trouble for her and St Vincent's the orphanage she had grown up in.
In book 2 we have Sadie in the HCA (Human Caelian Alliance) Underground, training and set on vengeance for the actions caused by her Grandfathers actions (sorry for being cryptic but I don't want to spoil book 1 if you have not read it yet)
The training is intense and she is having difficulties with the cold shoulder she recieves from Kian, the Caelian who came to rescue her in Book 1, Sadie has feelings for Kian, but she hasn't got the time to deal with relationship issues, and Kian's lack of understanding for why she wants revenge.
Being separated from her friends, and suffering from nightmares about the death of Michael, she makes a tentative friendship with a Caelian called Luca. Together the three are trying to find out more about Sadie's past, but other troubles are on the horizon, when her grandfather demands the return of Sadie to his clan, a secret is revealed which causes more discourse.
The book is full of action and tension as both factions try to force their views on the public majority, Caelian Registration is set to come into fruition, but will this then give shady government agencies or Caelian Clans free rein to use those with powers that can be used as weapons as they see fit?
When Kian plans a secret treat, it goes drastically wrong... Captured by the HPC (Human Purist Coalition) Will Sadie survive their torture? Sadies powers make her a prime target, and the HPC want to use that to their advantage - IF they can break her. Can the HCA save her? And at what cost?
Will Sadie get through this tormentalous time or will she be forever bound to be a weapon to be wielded by whomever has her in their clutches?
Warning - Cliffhanger will leave you begging for Ms Tyner to hurry up with the final book in the series, but it is due for release soon ( I am waiting impatiently)
I enjoyed this second installment, the characters are interesting, the dynamics of the story line keep you glued to the book, and leaves you wanting more.
Bound picks up shortly after the events of Lost, with Sadie training and on a mission to stop the Konig family. She's trying to master her physical and mental abilities while not losing herself.
It's always hard going into a second book because I'm worried about "second book syndrome." This one suffered slightly from that condition, but wasn't a disappointing read. It did feel like there wasn't as much development in the overall story or in the characters themselves as there was in Lost, however. I would have liked a bit more self exploration from Sadie than we got. She did have to face some challenges, obviously, and did grow, I just would have liked it presented slightly differently.
There is a lot of action in this novel as Sadie goes from one extreme situation to the next. She finds out a lot about her life and the lives of those around her that she didn't know before. And there are still plenty of questions open to explore in the next installment. Society is falling apart as norms and Caelian's fight each other, causing widespread unrest.
One thing that I really enjoy about these books is Sadie's relationship with all of her friends. They hold each other together and support each other. We get to see Rebecca, Madison, and John again, as well as some of their other friends from the orphanage. Kian has been at Sadie's side since the end of Lost. I wasn't completely happy with the progression of their relationship because I just didn't feel it building very much. Things seemed almost too sudden.
This was slower paced overall than Lost, but still really enjoyable. There are plenty of questions leading into the third installment and I am very excited to get my hands on a copy when it's released. This has proven to be a very enjoyable series so far, something that I was a bit skeptical about when I started these. Definitely a pleasant surprise.
Book: Bound Author: Donnielle Tyner Rating: 4 Out of 5 Stars
I would like to thank Donnielle Tyner for providing me with a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
So, the first thing that I thought of when I first started reading was The Hunger Games: Mockingjay. The leaders tracking down Sadie just reminded me so much of Mockingjay. Plus, the atmosphere was so close to it. It had the action and the developed characters that make The Hunger Games so popular.. Plus, it also has a little Divergent thrown in there. This is not a bad comparison. Most people do like The Hunger Games and are always looking for something close to it.
I will say that unlike many series, this book does not lose anything. The writing involves as does the plotline. Yes, it is a second book, but it does a nice job on building from the first book. It does not mess around with getting into the action and does not have all of the details of the first book. Why? Well, we don't need to set up the world for readers and we do need to move the plot along in the second book.
Now, the characters are still very well rounded and strong. Sadie is still dealing with sadness and confusion, but she is handling it with style. She does not have a mental breakdown, but instead chooses to build from these dark times and turns that negative energy into something good. I do also like how their pain was expressed. It felt so real, like it was just coming off the page.
I do think that the writing has greatly improved. It just seemed a lot smoother and the plot did seem to come together a lot better than in book 1. It seemed like Donnielle took any criticism that she got and use it to grow. Bound was just put together so much better than Lost.
I will tell readers to get ready for this book. It is a wild, crazy, and emotional ride. Plus, it is a fun read. I read this in two settings and really found myself getting sucked into the world. It is not nearly as long as Lost, but it is really, really fast paced. If I didn't have a copy, I would go ahead and buy it. I do think that it is worth your time and money.
***THIS BOOK WAS PROVIDED BY THE PUBLISHER/AUTHOR IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW**
Bound is the second Caelian Cycle book by Donnielle Tyner, and better than the first!
The writing is such, that you feel yourself there, with Sadie. My emotions were mirroring hers, and I was so invested in the story, I had to force myself to take breaks from reading; I'd put it down just to pick it backup again!
I cannot wait to read the conclusion, due sometime this year.

Ugh. I'd say that this book is completely different from the first one and I'd say the I like this book way more than it. The progress of the story much more interesting and how it unfolds felt more natural which makes it more exciting to read. I also loved the development of each character and I can't wait to read the next book of this series!!!!!
The second book in the YA “The Caelian Cycle” series, “Bound” picks up where the previous book leaves off with Sadie reeling from the loss of her friend and struggling to figure out her Talent, and her relationship with Kian.
Not quite as good as book one but still an enjoyable read. The storyline has evolved with both a loss of old characters and the introduction of new ones, all of which have their own story to tell too.
Winning a free copy of Donnielle Tyner’s Bound from a Goodreads contest presented an interesting read. Although there are some small editing issues, Bound has an interesting storyline that ends with a cliffhanger that makes the reader want to know what happens next.
