Rate this book
She has typed a thousand confessions. Tonight, she hears her own.

Marian Cole makes her living turning other people's worst days into court records. For eleven years she has sat in Courtroom 3, taking down every word, every cough, every pause. She never adds a word. She never takes one away. She has built her entire life on that rule.

Then a padded envelope appears on her doormat, with her name on it and no return address. Inside are a digital recorder and a case number from twenty-one years ago.

On the tape, a nineteen-year-old girl calmly admits to drowning her best friend. The girl is Marian. She remembers none of it.

As she transcribes the recording, Marian notices what no one else six stretches of static, each one deliberately thick. Something has been buried beneath them, and someone has gone to great lengths to keep it there. Soon a stranger is following her home. Her flat is searched. A message arrives from a number she doesn't Stop listening to the gaps.

Her sister, her ex-husband, and her old therapist each tell her a different version of that night. All three are convincing. All three end with the same let it go.

But Marian has spent her career listening for what a witness is hiding. And the closer she gets to the truth, the clearer it becomes that she was never meant to find it. She was meant to be the one person who could never prove it.

THE LAST TRANSCRIPT is a taut, twisty psychological thriller about memory, loyalty, and the lies families tell to protect the people they love. Told in a cool, precise voice by a narrator who has never been allowed to trust her own mind, it builds to a finale that will make you want to read the first chapter again.

Not much original here. There was only one semi-surprising twist. Very short, novella or a long short-story. A quick read that I don't regret.
