Free Love And Other Stories

Rate this book
A teenage girl finds unexpected sexual freedom on a trip to Amsterdam. A woman trapped at a dinner party comes up against an ugly obsession. The stories in Free Love are about desire, memory, sexual ambiguity and the imagination. In the harsh light of dislocation, the people in them still find connections, words blowing in the street, love in unexpected places. Ali Smith shows how things come together and how they break apart. She disconcerts and affirms with the lightest touch, to make us love and live differently.

Ali Smith is a writer, born in Inverness, Scotland, to working-class parents. She was raised in a council house in Inverness and now lives in Cambridge. In a 2004 interview with writing magazine Mslexia, she talked briefly about the difficulty of becoming ill with chronic fatigue syndrome for a year and how it forced her to give up her job as a lecturer at University of Strathclyde to focus on what she really wanted to do: writing. This 1995 collection was Ali Smith's first published work, and is a very accomplished work. Many of her stylistic trademarks are already present. The stories are playful, their protagonists often rebel against conformist expectations and the imagery is often startling.

I particularly enjoyed the third story "Text for the Day" in which a bibliophile woman deserts her flat, rereading books from her collection sent by a friend, and scattering their pages wherever she travels.

"Then she pushed the board right up and wrote in large letters, bangles jangling in the silence, the words Look Upon The World With Love. Then she sat down at the table."

Free Love is an early collection of Ali Smith's short stories. it was published in 1995 and contains the following:

Free love*
A story of folding and unfolding
Text for the day*
A quick one*
Jenny Robertson your friend is not coming
To the cinema
The touching of wood*
Cold iron
College
Scary
The unthinkable happens to people every day
The world with love*

I marked my personal favourites (*) but unlike other collections there weren't as many stories in this one that have stuck with me.
Even though Free Love is an early collection, there is visible brilliance in these stories. It is just that they are not moving with the same momentum or creating the same level of impact as some of the later stories. And yet, I cannot help but feel that some of the stories are more personal to the author than her later work.

I love Ali Smith's writing - she's the perfect combination of witty, conversational, and philosophical. But even though I liked all the stories in this collection, only a few are really memorable. One of those, "To the Cinema," is one of my favorite short stories ever (if you liked The Accidental, you'll LOVE this story). Basically, if you're a Smith fan, don't miss this one, and if you aren't, maybe try one of her later collections instead.

Slow, disjointed and not very enjoyable.
I'm afraid that this is the second book by Ali Smith I have attempted to read (and I only finished this one just before my patience gave out) and I won't be trying any more. I really don't like Smith's writing style - it comes across as scatty and all over the place, and makes me feel dizzy trying to keep up. Not a pleasurable experience.

OK, the Ali Smith marathon is over. Please mop up your drool, pull up your pants, and sod off home. It's been real. This book is her first story collection, a little more straightforwardly literary than her other works. Most of the stories here are excellent, others found me yawning and itchy. But I have been reading A LOT. And most of that has been Ali Smith. My bum (and head) hurts.

This will not be on the blog as I'm not too keen on reviewing short story collections.

Ali Smith's foray in the publishing world is pretty good. This collection has some fine moments, the cinema one being a big highlight. The rest though, range from solid to meh. Saying that one can see that the potential is there and her trademark quirkiness would be further developed from Ali Smith's second novel onwards.

At first it felt odd to read Ali Smith in a Virago edition.
The font is way smaller and it's funny how little details like that can change your perception of an author's work, when you've been used to it differently.
It wasn't only the font size that threw me off, though.
Free Love and Other Stories seemed way tamer and more conventional than most of the other Ali Smith I've read and I soon found out why - this was in fact her first book, if I'm not mistaken.
I loved seeing little Ali-glimmers along the way, foreshadowing all that I've come to love love love in her more recent books, all the word and language games, the stream of consciousness, the lyrical writing that makes you forget about the plot because you're so lost in the beauty of her writing.
(If you've read her and like her, you know what I'm talking about.)
Fun seeing themes she'd later develop more in certain books and stories.
Still great and I especially loved the last two short stories.

Perhaps a good place to start with her, in case you need a soft settling in.
(Otherwise go for The Accidental)

Re-reading in December 2025. Got crap news and picked this up again to soothe myself. I feel a lot of comfort knowing that I can always turn to Ali Smith whenever I need reminding of all the love and beauty in things and words and people.

Not sure what to think.

I loved the stories, so I enjoyed reading them.

I think what threw me off was the style of writing. At some points it was just very confusing and hard to follow.

I will remember this book mainly because it has given credence to an old wives' tale from my childhood, that my partner is convinced I made up (much like my dad telling me that a cousin twice removed meant a cousin twice in jail. I believed that one for YEARS!). As kids, after eating our boiled eggs with Marmite soldiers, we always used to smash out the bottom of the eggshell with a spoon, so the witches wouldn't use it as a boat to sail up and steal us away. Well, Ali Smith, thank you for putting an end to the ongoing debate of real/unreal. Here it is, in black and white from "Cold Iron": "Or a witch must have rowed out to sink him in an eggshell someone hadn't smashed through the bottom of with a teaspoon."

Witches and boiled eggs aside, this early collection of short stories from Ali Smith is a bit of a mixed bag. Her trademark poetic style and way of leaving things unsaid comes through in this, but some of the stories aren't as polished as later works, and a couple of them seem to miss the mark by a cat's whisker.

The five star stories make this well worth the price of admission, and they are clustered at the beginning and the end, with the middle filled with still-good-but-not-GREAT stories.

Favorites for me, the 5 star stories are:

"Free Love" - The first story, deservedly in the spot for the best story. A teenager on a trip to Amsterdam has her first sexual experience with a sex worker. It's a story of teenage friendships, and falling in and out of love, and is told in a lovely wistful way. Simply beautiful.

"A Story of Folding and Unfolding" - the second story, another story of love and loss. Another wistful melody of a tale:

"The electrician memorises the name above the bed of this locker. Later in the week he will ask her out and will find her as lovely as her underwear to him, and a little later still he will tell her about his mother dying, and sitting in the pub one night he'll show her his mother's wedding-ring in its wooden box with the velvet inside. She'll say, oh yes, it's a very pretty ring, and as she says it someone at the next table will see the scene, misread it and shout out, they're getting engaged! They're getting engaged! and all of the people round them in the small pub will smile and point and jog the shoulders and arms of the couple looking at each other in laughing alarm and embarrassment, and the people at the back will try to see what's going on, to catch a glimpse of the ring, the couple, anything of the moments and materials of which love gets made."

"Text for the Day" - the third story, and probably the most literary, a story of a girl reading and leaving the pages of books as she goes.

Then there's a group of 3 star stories, before the collection ramps up again to end with the wonderfully drawn "Scary", "The Unthinkable Happens to People Every Day" and "The World With Love".

Overall closer to 5 stars than 4.

MEINE MEINUNG

MEINE BEWERTUNG

Ich verleihe diesem Buch 2,5 von 5 Sternen.

This is my second Ali Smith book and it is clear that I'm falling deeply in love with her prose. The way she writes emotion is unparalleled, particularly in her descriptions of yearning and young love. It was affirming and beautiful.

With every short story collection, there were my personal favourites. Free Love, A Quick One, Jenny Robertson Your Friend is not Coming and The World With Love particularly stood out to me, although I would like to re-read Text for the Day as I feel I should have gotten more out of it. In fact, I can see myself coming back to this collection often, and going back through my favourite stories.

I think Ali Smith is well on her way to becoming a favourite of mine, and I cannot wait for Christmas to come where I hope to get more of her work.

Ali Smitas debijas darbs. Stāsti, kuros jaušams, ka rakstniecībā ienāks lieliska stāstniece. Jā, un man patīk, ja rakstniekam katrs teikums ir uzrakstīts tāpēc, ka tā tam ir jābūt, nevis izdevējs pieprasa x rakstzīmju apjomu.

With its subtle humour, enchanting details and witty reflections on film, literature, past relationships, journeys inwards and outwards, Ali Smith's prose is one of the most brilliant modern voice in our times. I liked some of the stories better, some a bit less, but all of them carried hope and light and poetry of everyday life, of different people, different backgrounds. An inspiring read.
