The War for Aonir is a unique blend of dark, heroic fantasy.
The continent of Aonir is entrenched in a spiritual war.
When Brother Rook is condemned to death for a crime he did not commit, it seems like one more ordinary soul lost, in a long list of ordinary souls. But what awaits him is much grander. Soon he will embark on a journey that will have him remembered in every history book, and in the hearts and minds of the citizens of Aonir.
An evil force operates from the shadows, building power little by little over time. It seems all is lost, but an unlikely hero is found in the unlikeliest of places.
The War for Aonir is a dark, low fantasy epic - for fans of the classic fantasy tales that have the battle between good and evil at their heart.
Writing and reading has always been my passion from a young age. I tend to pick up books which interest me greatly, thus leading to many 5* reviews.
My favourite traditionally published authors are: J.R.R Tolkien, Le Guin, Lord Dunsany, Cormac McCarthy, David Foster Wallace, Charles Dickens, John Steinbeck, Mary Shelley and Louisa May Alcott.
I received an ARC for this book, and let me just say that I really enjoyed it. Some great world-building while keeping the pace of the plot smooth. I recommend it if you are looking for a new fantasy read.
The War for Aonir comes as the first full-sized debut novel from English author, Brent Matley. To get things started, I would like to point out the author was kind enough to send me an advanced reader copy for this novel.
Matley's latest effort starts off with a common fantasy trope (in the best way possible) of "why was I chosen?" However, Brent's cast of characters that wouldn't have become friends unless they knew war was coming differs from others from its genre. Matley takes the time to not only describe scenes in great detail, but makes sure readers really get an understanding for the characters through consistent dialogue. Despite not being from the scifi genre, the character interactions are much like a space opera- it's about how they interact and the lives they live.
The author truly put a lot of work into this one, so please consider my recommendation! Not only has Matley provided readers with hand-drawn maps, and even in-text lore to provide the reader with context... You just might have to stick around for that incredible ending. This was the 200th book I've read this year, and it's an honour to have this on my list.
10/10 recommend this brand new fantasy novel.
