Alison May has been the Vintage Housekeeper in residence at BrocanteHome.Net for the past eight years, regaling her audience with all the up's and downs of life, love and vintage housekeeping in a teeny tiny 150 year old Lancashire terraced cottage...
Her second book "Life, Love and Vintage Housekeeping" is now available...
Alison May is the writer behind Brocante Home. I'm really falling in love with the idea of making a home that makes your heart sing, a home that feels like a warm and safe hug. May's books are full of ideas and inspirations to do just that.
Possibly the idea here is to be exhausted by the scrubbing, not by reading the book, but I am early into considering these concepts so it is what it is. There are a great many helpful, inspiring, and encouraging lists and tips in this book. I learned loads, and may even resort to cleaning something! A joy, as ever.
Y'know those books which are just perfect to read with a big cuppa on a chilly day? Not too taxing on the brain, but gently feeding you knowledge? This is one of those books.
Personally, I didn't have some big eureka moment nor has the book made a strong lasting impression. The impression is has left, however, is of cosy and comfort. It's of little hints and tips it takes me a minute to remember where I read them (this book) or when (which time reading through it or dropping in and out) and in being an easy choice when I feel like reading but don't have a genre/author in mind.
I like how May breaks up the cleaning jobs and everything sounds doable. I'm going to start with the smaller jobs at the beginning and work through to the end of the book. I'm actually interested in doing this and many housekeeping books have not been able to do this for me.
I loved reading this book. It made me want to get up and bust out some housecleaning moves. I enjoyed Alison’s tone and like the idea of a loved home. She had a complete list of natural cleaner recipes too, although some ingredients left me puzzled and I assumed they were British ones.
It’s a nice book that makes you want to clean and gives you motivation and tools to do so. I frequently go back to it when I need a small pick me up or when I feel overwhelmed with my chores. It’s nice to read even or maybe especially when your house it spotless.
I loved this book on spring cleaning. I love all the tips and fun ways of going about cleaning. Alison talks to you like she is an old friend. I quite recommend it.
